Higgins Premium Pet Foods is a family owned and operated company located in Miami, Florida. Higgins began formulating companion bird and small animal foods more than 35 years ago. Their state-of-the art, automated production mill was designed to insure unparalleled quality. All seeds are quadruple air-washed, which reduces particles that can cause respiratory problems. The end products are some of the cleanest blends on the market. Any perishable ingredients, i.e. human-grade fruits, nuts and vegetables are kept in cold storage to ensure freshness.  All foods and treats are free of artificial preservatives and colors. Another plus is that the bags are reseal able and made from recycled plastic.

I have been a fan of Higgins products for the past 20 years. All my birds, from the canaries to the African greys, have eaten one or another of the blends manufactured by Higgins. I find the products offered to be clean, fresh, easily accepted by most birds and contain a wide variety of ingredients in various blends. One of my favorite blends to offer over the years has been the Safflower Gold Large Parrot.

Ever since I opened my bird store, The Platinum Parrot, I have been educating clients in the regards to feeding peanuts. I do not like to feed them to my birds. I would rather others did not either. The Safflower Gold does contain peanuts so I would always dispose of them.  Needless to say I was thrilled when I met Dean, spokesperson for Higgins Premium Pet Foods, at a trade show and he told me of the new Vita Seed California Blend. The new blend has less corn, more fruits and no peanuts. When the opening of the bag, I knew it would be a welcomed addition to my own flocks’ diet.

The Vita Seed California Blend for Parrots is a safflower-based mix that also contains: wheat, buckwheat, whole oats, red milo, corn, yellow peas, carrot flakes, pea flakes, pumpkin seed, almonds in shell, papaya, pineapple, banana, raisins, red peppers and ground yellow corn, to name a few. For the complete list of ingredients, see below.

If you have used Higgins in the past, I suggest you try the new California Blend. If you liked it then, you are sure to love it now that it’s now offered with two times the fruit and natural yummy ingredients. If you haven’t tried it yet, what are you waiting for?

I have an African Grey and he will NOT eat anything, but Pretty Bird for African Grey's. We have tried many other brands of large parrot food and especially the one's that have the picture on the front and he dumps it out, he has gone as long as a week on food scraps alone, when he is out of his food. He eats raw fruit, but not the seed kind.
