Calico Macaw Species Profile
Traits:  The calico macaw is a hybrid cross between a green-winged macaw and a military macaw. The calico macaw is a first-generation hybrid macaw; its parents are two species of naturally occurring macaws. Most often the father is a green-winged macaw, which, results in a large bird, with the head and beak shape more typical of the green-winged macaw. These macaws have a green back with a bronze cast similar to the military macaw, and a deep red chest and belly. With the intelligence and temperament of it parents, the calico macaw is most often very trainable, learns to talk and do tricks, and has is good natured.

Calico macaws are strikingly colorful, beautiful birds. Their parentage — the green-winged macaw known for its beauty and good personality, and the military macaw, a favorite because of its good temperament, trainability and intelligence--makes the calico macaw a popular hybrid macaw. Although they can bond closely with one person, when properly socialized with a variety of people, they do well in households with multiple family members. They learn quickly and enjoy plenty of activity and involvement in the household.

Behavior/Health Concerns:  Like all macaws, whether naturally occurring species or hybrids, the calico macaw needs a consistent, constructive interaction. Because they are very large, they need a big cage with plenty of toys, as well as out-of-cage time to exercise and interact with the family. Like other macaws, this hybrid can have the personality traits of a toddler, including temper tantrums, so patient, consistent behavior training is important.
