At times fearless and at other moments shy, the African Poicephalus species make colorful and comical pets. As with most African birds, they’re – in general – much quieter than South American parrots, making strange beeps, whistles and occasional alarm call shrieks. Poicephalus parrots require a calm home environment and a gentle owner sensitive to their sometimes volatile moods.
You’ll encounter four to six species in the United States, but the Senegal is the most widely-recognized Poi.
“I have seen several clients who have taught their Poicephalus to do tricks, thus my judgment is that they are fast-learners and intelligent. They can also be total clowns when playing and interacting. Their size is a very attractive factor, as you get the characteristics of a large parrot, but all bundled up in a medium sized pet bird. I do not understand why they are not more common in the pet bird trade. No particular medical problems come to mind.” - Samuel Vaughn, DVM, dip. ABVP – avian practice
