Red-Bellied Macaw Species Profile
Traits:  Red-bellied macaws are are shy, but are good mimics with a voice described as childlike. They are not commonly thought of as a companion bird, but fans of red-bellied macaws find them to be great pet birds. Sometimes described as a homely, ugly bird, those who favor this bird find their appearance pleasing and see their blue-colored feather as adding charm to their look.

Behavior/Health Concerns:  Red-bellied macaws have a propensity toward obesity and a limited diet. In the wild this bird primarily eats Beruti palm tree fruit. Red-bellied macaw may bond closely to an individual, so socialize them well in order to keep your pet bird friendly around a variety of people. They are prolific chewers and are susceptible to overgrown beaks, so provide plenty of hard toys for them to chew on. They are also susceptible to papillomas, proventricular dilatation disease (PDD), polyomavirus, psittacosis and vitamin-A sensitivity.
