Red Lory Species Profile
Traits:  The red lory makes a beautiful, wonderful pet, but it also needs to be the center of attention. They can develop affection toward more than one person, but red lories often pick a favorite flock member. They can come with an attitude and favor a household in which they are the only bird around.

Behavior/Health Concerns:  Red lories are susceptible to hemochromatosis (iron storage disease) and visceral gout. They also can have screaming and biting tendencies. Red lories are less aggressive than other lories, but be cautious when introducing a new bird because some red lories can become jealous. Red lories can be fearless - attacking dogs, cats and the vacuum cleaner. Red lories needs a low-protein and low-iron diet that consists largely of fruit and nectar. These birds generally do not eat seed. Lory breeder Margrethe Warden does not recommend a pelleted diet rather a diet of fresh fruits, vegetable and sprouts. Lories have a nearly liquid stool that makes constant cleaning a must.

Expert Advice

“They make good pets. They are good talkers, very playful, hyper and can hit those high pitch notes that make you cringe. They get loud when they’re excited.”

Margrethe Warden, an American Lory Society director and bird breeder
