Twenty-Eight Parakeet Species Profile
Traits:  The twenty-eight parakeet can be an active pet bird and make a good outdoor species within the Barnardius group of parakeets because of its thick, gray down under feathers. Because of their ability to thrive in a variety of climates, these pet parakeets enjoy bathing in the rain and snow. While the twenty-eight parakeet gets along well with neighbor birds, it is recommended pairs of Barnardius birds not be housed next to pairs of the same species.

Behavior/Health Concerns:  Vegetables tend to be a favorite for the twenty-eight parakeet. To keep these pet birds healthy and satisfied, a hearty diet of pellets, fresh vegetables, fruits, rice and occasional treats is recommended. While the twenty-eight parakeet likes to interact with its owner, these pet birds do not prefer being handled often. Twenty-eight parakeets need plenty of cage room to spread their wings. The males are green on the abdomen and under coverts with dark green across the throat and breast. The head, nape and upper cheeks are a dull black on the male. They have a red frontal band on their face above the upper beak. Females and juveniles are duller than the males with a more brownish color where the male is dull black. The females are either lacking the red band or it is a paler color.

Expert Advice

“A true twenty-eight is very hard to find. Most have been interbred with the Port Lincolns. A true twenty-eight has red on its brow and no yellow at all on its chest. They are larger than the Port Lincoln as well. They need the space to fly. Try to keep the birds pure if possible; mature males have no white strip under the wing, also the males are brighter across the brow.”
