Umbrella Cockatoo Species Profile
Traits:  One of the most popular species of cockatoo, the umbrella cockatoo is a sweet, cuddly companion, but without proper training can become demanding and prone to problem behavior. To keep these pet birds happy, they need at least one hour of playtime a day and exercise time with their owner along with several more hours of supervised out of the cage time. Known to be tamer, more readily available and similar in personality, the umbrella cockatoo is often chosen by owners instead of the Moluccan cockatoo.

Behavior/Health Concerns:  Umbrella Cockatoos can be extremely aggressive while breeding. Without enough mental and physical stimulation, they can resort destructive behaviors such as feather picking. They are susceptible to psittacine beak and feather disease (PBFD), fatty liver disease, obesity and bumblefoot. Umbrella cockatoos can become territorial once they have matured, and they are often destructive chewers. While these pet birds need attention and time with humans, they must also learn how to be independent and not become accustomed to an excessive amount of human attention. Umbrella cockatoos are known as dusty birds, which is a concern for those with allergies.
