All That Sparkles

With its colorful pieces, glittery avian jewelry is what to wear for the bird owner.

By Connie Cho

Diamonds might be a girl’s best friend, but bird owners won’t wear it unless it proudly displays their love for their feathered companions. Avian-inspired jewelry often outshines ordinary pieces.

bird jewelry pinsEditor Melissa Kauffman gathered her beautiful brooch collection from various bird events throughout the years. A bird show is a great place to find ornate avian jewelry.

Jewelry Safety Tips

1. Real sterling silver and gold jewelry is not harmful to birds. Although it is nontoxic, do not allow your bird to play with jewelry, because it might ingest small pieces.

2. Avoid costume jewelry that often contains harmful toxins, such as lead.

3. Avoid injuries from pins and other sharp points or pieces that may break off.

Zarah Co. located in Topanga, California produces custom jewelry which contains high levels of lead in it's enamel. The company has been aware of this for a long time but fails to let it's customers know.
