Dove: Bird Term of the Day

Definitions of words used by pet bird enthusiasts with the pet bird slant.

pet dove ringneck
The ring-necked dove is quite common not only in the wild but as a popular pet dove.

Dove: (noun) Doves are small, compact birds with short legs and necks of the taxonomic family Columbidae and the order Columbiformes. These pretty, peaceful, defenseless birds can be found in the wild all over the world, plus certain pet dove species make great pet birds. Doves are also a symbol of peace. Although doves can fly, they spend a lot of time foraging on the ground. The most common pet doves are the diamond dove and the ring-necked dove. Active from sun up to sun down, pet doves are similar to pet parrots – pet doves are vocal (cooing sounds), they need housing, food and water, attention and companionship.

Pet doves can be affectionate or distant depending on the amount of time you spend with them. Although pet doves don’t play with toys, they may use bird swings, dangling bird noise toys, such as bells, and bird mirrors. Doves and pigeons are part of the same family and order, although pigeons are typically larger. Doves are around 8 inches in length, more or less depending upon the species.
