Grass Parakeet: Bird Term of the Day

Expand your parrot vocabulary with the Bird Word of the Day.

A grass parakeet is a small Australian parrot with a long tail
Rosy Bourke's parakeets are considered "grass parakeets."

Grass parakeets: (noun) Australian parrots with long tails, plus small and slender bodies. Many have grass-green colored backs that blend into the grass, as they are ground feeders in the wild. They are affectionately called "grass 'keets," though in Australia, they are more commonly referred by their genus name: Neophema. Most grass parakeets are in the genus Neophema, and include the: blue wing, elegant, rock, orange belly, turquoise, and scarlet chest. Also included is the Bourke's parakeet (Neopsephotus bourkii); sometimes parakeets from the genus Psephotus and Platycercus are considered grass parakeets.
