 I am Buddy's 3rd owner. Buddy came into the veterinary office where my daughter works. He was a trained bird in an amusement park. He had started having feather plucking issues and the "pirate" he worked with had no room in his act for a plucking bird. After buying the bird and a vet exam, we also found a tumor around his uropygial gland and vent. I suppose this was another reason the guy didn't want the bird as well. He charged us $1,000.00 for Buddy and promptly left town after he received the money. We haven't heard from him since. Yes....I had been "had"...but I am ever so grateful that I have Buddy in my life. With all his problems, he is my sunshine!. |

we always remember! Falco and the boys.
Thanks for coming back! We've already seen some of the outdoor raptor mews, with Martha and Fluffy in them. These are outdoor enclosures attached to the building with access to the indoors in very cold weather. The raptors can come inside when we are not busy, during the winter. Sop, continuing along the mews, we come to the gang, Sid, Vince, and Tony, the 3 turkey vultures who live with us. I don't know if I mentioned this before, but if the animals have names, they are permanent residents. We never name the rehab animals, as we don't want people to think they can interact with them. Anyway, Sid and Vince have been at the center since at least 2002. They were there when mom began volunteering that year. Tony is a newer addition to the group, and we're actually looking to place him as an education animal with another rehabilitation center. Turkey vultures are very social animals, love each other's company, so all 3 of the guys are housed together. All 3 have wing injuries that never healed properly. The Aviary donated Vince, Sid was brought to us by the PA Game Commission, as was Tony. Just some general info about turkey vultures: they are the only birds in the state with a sense of smell. Even black vultures follow the TVs around to find food. They cool off in the summer by pooping down their legs (I know, sounds yucky to me too!), and their first line of defense is projectile vomiting. Considering what they eat, it's not very pleasant. Their heads are bald to prevent infections from the food they eat. They get 2 mews to call their own, because both of the outdoor mews open into their indoor cage. We do house other raptors in one of them, if we run out of space in the summer, though. Here's a vote and hug for today!
