Hi Rocky and flock Jan. 9th Spotlight on Caring Part 1 Sky here , welcoming you to this weeks SPOTLIGHT on CARING featuring BC's KIDDO and his Mom Pam SKY: When did you first become interested in birds? PAM: After Kiddo came into my life. Before that I really didn't understand how anyone could call a bird a pet! I thought they just sat in cages doing nothing all day. I didn't have a clue. When we adopted Kiddo I soon discovered how wrong I was. He was supposed to be my husband's bird, but I was so fascinated by him I spent every evening after work getting him to accept me. It took a couple of weeks, but by the time he would step up for me we were bonded and I was enamored with my new friend. SKY: When did you join BC? KIDDO: I joined BC on 11/15/2006. I believe I am one of the oldest still active members. My mom saw the site in Bird Talk (still miss that magazine!), and she signed us right up. I wasn't sure what do at first, like all newbies, but I soon started making friends. The real turning point in my getting involved was when I met SweetPepper, who is now my beloved wifebird. SKY How did the BOTM - Bird of the Month -begin? KIDDO: BOTM began before I joined, and it is totally the creation of the BC web site. It was originally a totally blind competition and nobirdy seemed to really set out to win. When SweetPepper and I were planning our wedding, it occurred to me that there would be a lot of visitors (and votes) on her page responding to our wedding invitations, since that is where the wedding was held. I began including a request to be sure to vote so that she could be BOTM for the wedding, and it worked. So, then I asked that everybirdy vote for me as I shared our honeymoon to Australia and New Zealand in pictures and blogs so we could finish our honeymoon in the castle. That also worked. That was when I came up with the idea of creating a BOTM Calendar Page, and so it began. SKY: What was the BOTW? Are they or were they connected? PAM: Before there was BOTD, we used to have BOTW (week), but when BC added BOTD to make BC the same as the other animal channels, they discontinued BOTW. So if you see that badge on a birdie's page, you know they have been around a long time. Sky: Thank you Kiddo and Mom Pam for sharing with us how you became involved with the BOTM campaign. Hi Rocky You are pretty! I like your picture. I like to go outside too but I don't get to do that until it is warm. I like to sit in the tree in the backyard and make lots of noise and chew on the branches. Do you talk a lot. I sure do. Especially when my mom and dad first come home from work and are trying to talk to each other. That is just plain rude of them. I haven't seen them ALL DAY and so I join in. I make sure I am talking louder than they are so they have to listen to me. They say I am like a little kid that way - hee hee! Big wing hugs right back at ya! Hi Rocky! BBFF! Mom and I were just thinking about you so I asked her if I could fly by for a visit! Wow, I really had to help mom did through Honey Bun's blogs to find you!!!! Have you met my new sister, and the baby of the flock? Her name is Dew Drop. She has a page here, too! Boy, did I have alot to eat on Thanksgiving. I got to spend most of the day with my mom while she cooked. First off I helped my other mom make a special birdie bread for all the birds in the house with lots of fruit in it as well as fresh apple and cranberries. I had to check out the turkey while she was stuffing it. There were all sorts of goodies I just HAD to taste either while mom was cooking them or later during dinner. I had to taste EVERYTHING (turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes, jellied cranberry sauce, pasta, and even the homemade giblet gravy). Mom was shocked when I liked everything and kept going back for me. She even took a pics of me sampling her dinner! Well, I gotta fly. Here's a vote for you! Hope you can fly by real soon for a visit! Hi there! So glad to meet another Rocky. As you already know, my bestest BC birdie buddy is Rocky the cockatoo. And yes, the bird is out of the bag. Hard to keep a secret on the BC, but it's really nice of him and his mom to find me so many new friends! I will definately visit your brother Buddy. All quakers are welcome here! HI ROCKY I went to Sprouts house on saturday and I had a great time! They were all alittle afraid of me because I'm sooo much bigger then them but his mommy spoiled me! I loved that part! My mom said that I behaved like a perfect gentlemen and I can go back to Sprouts house anytime! So I have one favor to ask you, I would like to campaign for Sprout and try to get him BOTW because none of his fids have ever been BOTW and I had such a good time at his house. But theres one thing, please don't mention anything to him! I want this to be a total surprise! OK? Just stop by and talk to him and don't mention BOTW or anything. Thanks alot!! Hey Hey! How’s it going? I have some exciting news! My bird Francis is wild. Well, was wild! Yesterday I was cleaning his cage and he got out! I thought OH NO I’ll never catch him! When he landed, I put my finger out and he hopped right on it! I couldn’t believe it! So right now he is sitting happily on one of my horse figures (there’s a picture on his page) bighting the horses ear! He loves flying around in my room. Hello Rocky! Welcome to BC, here is a vote for you. We have a "Rocket Birdie"...a.k.a."Rocky" in our flock, too. However, Rocket is an african Grey. "Pedro" is our yellow naped amazon; and she thinks that you are adorable. Love your picture. I hope that your wings are clipped well. My Mom has a friend who almost lost a yellow naped amazon with clipped wings, when a gust of wind blew and the bird got frightened. He flew high up into a tree. Yellow Naped Amazons are very strong fliers. Mom's friend climbed up the tree after him, and the parrot was not happy about being caught. By the time Mom's friend got down the tree he had several cuts on his hand from the bird biting him! However, at least he got the bird back! You also have to be careful about where you walk or perch outside. (Native/outdoor birds can carry diseases). If you sit or walk where a sick bird was (or pooped), you could catch the disease that that bird was carrying. (Better safe then sorry). If you get a chance, fly on in for a visit.
