In 2004 I was told I had cancer. I was very depressed about my condition and uncertain as to what the future held for me. I had already had one operation and was schedualed for another to remove the cancer. They were hoping to get it all in the second operation.
I have alwasy wanted to own an Congo African Grey and with the way things were looking I figured now was the time to get one and I could spend what time I had left with it, making my final times happy.
I live in a small town and finding any type of parrot is not easy. One day my husband brought home a flyer from a large pet store chain and they were having a sale on parrots. Wouldnt you know it, one of them was a Congo African Grey, who was 5 months old and had been hand raised. At the time he was living in the pet store waiting for someone to love him.
Though the pet store was more than four hours away, I called them and inquired about Vegas. They told me yes he was still available. I figured this was my last chance to own one so I bought him and his huge cage sight unseen. I made arrangements with the owner of the store to meet her half way to pick up Vegas and his cage. I drove the two hours, on a very cold, windy January night, arriving just before the pet store closed. I asked the woman about Vegas and she took me to their baby parrot room and there he was! I fell in love! I called his name and he responded by chirping at me. I went over and picked him up out of his cage and he immediatley snuggled up to me. I think he realized that I was not feeling well both physically and mentally.
We packed his cage in the car, then packed Vegas in his travelling cage and set off for home.
During the months of my illness Vegas was a huge help to me. When I felt down or was hurting all I had to do was go pick him up and he would snuggle with me, making chirping and cooing noises. I swear he knew I was sick. After holding and petting him I always felt better.
I am happy to say that my cancer is in remission and I believe that Vegas has played a very large part in my recovery. If he hadnt been there for me, I am not sure things would have turned out the way they did.
Thanks Vegas, for always being there when I need you. You are the shining star in my life and I love you for who you are and for what you have done for me. I can never thank you enough. I love you with all my heart.

Hi! My name is Vegas

I am a Congo African Grey from Cottam, Ontario, Canada, MI.

Sometimes I call him Honey, but usually we use his name.

12 years old   M

Congo African Grey

I just LOVE grapes. Two other treats I like are pasta and pizza.

I like to sit on the door of my cage or look out the octagon shaped window behind my cage and check out the birds that fly around.

Anything new freaks him out. He is not a fan of other people and can get very territorial. I wish he was friendlier but he is a one person bird.

Im Vegas and I'm a Congo African Grey.
What I love about my mom is how much she loves me and the things she does for me.
My mom tells me every day how much she loves me and I love hearing her talk to me.
My mom takes really good care of me. She feeds me tons of great, healthy food and sometimes some treats.
I love when mom scratches my head and tells me just how much I mean to her. I am one lucky bird to have a mom like her. I luv ya mom!!

I dont know why he does this but he will not use his cage to go to the bathroom. He waits till he is let out to go..

Give love freely, laugh loudly, live like today is your last day..

  Hi Vegas
I as so glad your mom is doing better. My mom is an almost 17yr. serviver of cancer but it was touch and go for awhile. She says bird are a comfort and a joy to have around. Before we inside birds came into her life she would feed the wild one. She still does and tell us to be kind to them because they have feeling to just like us. Our mom says to tell your mom she will pray for you and hope that you stay feeling good.well must go bye. Oh forgot to vote for you so here it is.

Come visit me, Rosey & Smokey.

  Hi Vegas.....From Sterling
Our stories sound similar in some ways.
Sterling is potty trained and he waits to go outside his house too!
It was an unusual wish I had but as I read your story I see that it was similar to mine. With a cancer diagnosis there comes a time when you ask yourself.....what would complete me? I have no children but I have always wanted an African Grey. Non bird people think this is the strangest thing.
Another quirky tidbit is that Sterling is a lefty!

Come visit me, Sterling Gray.

  Hi Vega and Mom
Wow, first you are a survivor for sure and your "Vegas" sure had something to do with it. I beleive that. And they do feel our pain. Animals are also known to know that we are sick when we do not know ourselves. So happy to hear you are doing well , he needs you. I would feel the same. So happy you have him. Do not worry about the "only a person bird" , my amazon is the same way.

By the way I know the cold up there. I lived IN N.B. and Montreal,QC. Canada years ago. And I have a sister in Kingston Ontario. And parents still in New Brunswick brrbrr too cold for me. So hello there. :)

Diane, New Smyrna Beach,, FL.
