Hi! My name is INDIANA SAM ~ SPRING IS HERE!

I am a Senegal Parrot from Portage, IN.

Sam looks in his mirror and says, "HI PEETIE!"

Dusty's cage, Mommy's shoulder, the kitchen cabinet, the window sill, the condo in Florida, and only in private: my swing - a gift from Daddy!!! I guess he's not so bad!!

Pesky Daddy getting the stick to put me back in my cage. Well, how about Daddy in general - especially when he gets between me and my gal. I get huffy and puffy then!!!

When Mommy sings to me and lets me ride around on her shoulder. She lights up when she talks about me!!! She is fun and likes to play with me and cuddle on the couch at night before night-night time.

I love to sing songs to Mommy and sit in the kitchen cabinet next to the Elvis Cup. It is also fun to freak daddy out when he is trying to relax on the couch with sneak fly-by attacks. I like to tell daddy he is a "Good Boy" and to tell mommy, "I love you" when I am in trouble!!!.

"I'm a pistol, Grandma Stella said!" And, "What the World Needs Now is Love Sweet Love" ... that's my favorite song! I try to sing, "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" but mommy starts tearing up everytime I try to sing it. What's up with that?.

Boo Boo does the HAPPY HUMPDAY dance before Coris speech:
the Ruby-Throated Hummingbird is the only hummingbird that breeds in the northeastern united states. one early naturalist felt the birds rapidly beating wings sounded like a bumble bee and named it the Humbird. the Ruby-Throated migrates from South America to southern canada flying non-stop , 500 miles, across the Gulf of Mexico.in the western united states the Rufous Hummingbird ranges farther north than any other hummingbird going as far as southern Alaska. the Annas Hummingbird resides in California wandering sometimes into Arizona and along the Rockies north into Canada . a popular myth was that the Hummingbirds must be hitchhiking a ride on larger birds to be able to travel such long distances.

hummingbirds have almost the highest metabolism of any warm blooded mammal and feed almost continuously often becoming torpid at night to preserve their energy. the female laying on her eggs doesn't have the luxury of lowering her metabolism at night since she must keep her 2 eggs warm. the intricately woven nest made up of spider web silk seems to protect her and her eggs from the cold.
in one Mayan legend birds who asked a tribal wiseman how to build a sturdy nest were sent to the hummingbirds for instructions.

  HI INDIANA SAM
Boo Boo stands in front of the audience on this monday and gives a small introduction before Cori's campaign speech. since everybody is anxiously waiting for spring we thought we would end our campaign week talking about Hummingbirds, for when they return to the colder regions spring must be here even if it doesn't feel like it.

When the pilgrims stepped ashore in Massachusetts in 1620 the indian chiefs who greeted them wore strange, small glittering ornaments in their ears-they were stuffed hummingbirds. Cortez, the spanish conquistador was astonished when he met Montezuma in Mexico, to see that the Aztec emperor and nobles of the court were arrayed in long coats that shone brilliantly when the sun struck them. when such a cloak was presented to Cortez, he was amazed to find it made entirely of hundreds of hummingbird skins.

hummingbirds, the smallest of all birds(the Bee Hummingbird from Cuba is the size of a bumblebee) have almost been completely obliterated from the earth several times. somehow they managed to survive. in the 19th century it was fashionable to decorate ladies hats with them and millions were killed for it. in 1860 more than 500,000 hummingbird skins were auctioned in london. eventually laws were passed in the united states and london making it illegal to trade in hummingbird skins plus fashions changed so hummingbirds slowly made a recovery considering they only lay 2 small pearl sized eggs a year and are the prey of larger birds and squirrels. the destruction of their forests where they make their nests and pesticides are are now increasingly taking their toll on the tiny "jewels of the sky"

before Cori begins her speech Boo Boo dusts her off and then wishes all the birds a wonderful day.
found mostly in the old world, the Kingfisher is a bright jewel of a bird who skims over the water in a flash of blue and orange, dicing for small fish, crayfish, frogs and insects.its eyes have oval lenses enabling it to see well in the air as well as underwater. wearing the Kingfishers feathers was believed to heighten the wearers beauty.in britton it was believed the bird could glow in the dark. it was believed that the Kingfisher was originally a dull colored bird but Noah releases the Kingfisher from his arc in order to find land. after being confined for so long the bird flew up to the sky until it took on the blue color of the heavens. then it flew so close to the sun its breast was scorched so it was forced to dive into the water below . at this point it remembered it was suppose to find land and went in search of the ark but could no longer find it since Noah had long since landed on Mt Arafat. this is why the Kingfisher continues to this day flying along rivers calling out to Noah. it was also believed that upon death the birds did not decay so their bodies were placed among clothes to preserve them. whoever owned dead Kingfisher would be granted grace and loveliness by wearing its feathers. plucking feathers from a Kingfisher and throwing them in water, then retrieving only the feathers that floated and stroking a loved one with them was considered a powerful love talismans. dead Kingfishers hung up by their beaks with a thread foretold the direction the wind would blow by which direction their breast faced.
RENEGE AFFIRM, AND TURN THEIR HALEYCON BEAKS
WITH EVERY GALE AND VARY OF THEIR MASTERS…..shakespeare
it is amazing how birds are able to survive despite man! the amazon and green Kingfishers are found from Mexico to Argentina and are stable at about 500,000 in population.

today i would like to talk about the BIRD MAN OF ALCATRAZ. in 1963, Robert F Stroud, murderer of two men died after spending 54 years in solitary confinement. no man in the history of the world ever spent more time alone. were it not for his deep intelligence and love for birds, Stroud would have converted to a human vegetable, but instead became one of the worlds greatest bird pathologists. in an article in the respected Scientific American, the author states that Stroud learned more about bird diseases than any other amateur investigator. a book THE BIRDMAN OF ALCATREZ and a movie of the same name starring Burt Lncaster, made stroud's genius for curing sick birds world renowned. of course it did not gain freedom for Stroud. one of the men he killed happened to be a prison guard. Strouds book was first published in 1943 and the only major change in the treatment of birds since then has been the introduction of antibiotics such as Terramycin, aureomycin and others in the treatment of bird diseases. antibiotics require a doctors prescription and Strouds treatments do not as they are more of a homeopathic treatment but would require a compounding pharmacist to make them up since some of the ingredients might be hard to obtain today. treating a birds disease is in recognizing what the disease is and what caused it. there is still no other book in the world, in any language which can help laymen more in treating bird diseases than the book Strouds digest on the disease of birds.

Boo Boo wishes everybirdy a HAPPY TGIF DAY before Cori begins her speech.

The dove has always been a symbol of peace and love since earliest recorded times. the dove served as a symbol for aphridite as the symbol of love, being both affectionate (hence the term loveydovey) and sexually active. aphrodite was believed to have been hatched from a doves egg and brought ashore by fish. in syria the goddess astarte was saved from starvation in the desert by doves who fed her milk and cheese and turned her into a dove on her death. a dove was sent from the ark by Noah in christian religion to check on whether the flood waters were receding. when the dove returned with a sprig of olive branch in its beak Noah knew god had forgiven mankind. in christian religion the dove is the symbol of the holy ghost. in the middle east the dove is held as sacred when a ruler who was killed in battle hd 2 doves fly from his heart. it was also believed any bird of prey who killed a dove would drop dead. in japan doves were believed to be messengers of war rather than symbols of peace when he was saved from discovery while hiding in a tree by two doves that flew out and convinced the enemy the tree was hiding nope. in italy russia and germany it was considered sin to kill a dove. while in the channel islands it was considered unlucky to keep pet doves which would cause a difficult marriage

  HI INDIANA SAM
Named for the striking yellow tufts that grow above its eyes during breeding season, the tufted puffin is one of the most loved birds in North America. The tufted puffin’s striking breeding season coloration has earned it such names as “sea parrot” and “clown of the sea.” With its short wings that allow it to swim expertly underwater, the tufted puffin dives for prey along coasts of California, Oregon, and Washington where populations of this seabird, as well as in Japan, are in trouble, as lack of prey, climate change, fishing, oil spills, and other dangers take their toll. Tufted puffins are able to dive up to 60 meters to catch small fish like sardines, herring, and anchovy and may make as many as 360 dives per day when foraging to feed their chicks. Breeding populations of tufted puffins in California, Oregon, and Washington have declined by 85 to 90 percent in the last three decades, from more than 30,000 birds to no more than 4000 today. Most of these remaining puffins are in Washington. Oregon and California are each estimated to have breeding populations of less than 300 birds. The population in Japan is down to ten breeding pairs. Tufted puffins are still numerous in Alaska and British Columbia. But the more southern populations that are in steep decline encompass a significant portion of the species’ historic range and contain genetic diversity that is important to maintain if the species is to persist in the long-term, particularly with impacts from climate change escalating. humans are the cause of the tufted puffin’s plight. Climate change, driven by our burning of fossil fuels, is altering temperatures and circulation patterns of our oceans, disrupting the food web and making it harder for puffins to forage and to successfully reproduce. Puffins are also caught as bycatch in commercial fishing nets, drowning underwater when they cannot surface for air.
Diving for food and roosting on the surface of the water makes the tufted puffin highly vulnerable to impacts from oil spills. A single oil spill can wipe out entire breeding colonies. In fact, in 1991, the Tenyo Maru oil spill off the coast of Washington killed about 10 percent of the state’s population of tufted puffins. Similarly, the Exxon Valdez spill was responsible for the death of up to 13,000 Alaskan tufted puffins in 1989.
To compound the problem, tufted puffins generally return to the same colony each year and even if any birds were tempted to stray, breeding colonies in the contiguous United States are physically separated from other breeding colonies to the north. This has made recovery very difficult as population numbers dwindle. In recent years,

  HI INDIANA SAM
wednesday
Cori and Boo Boo both do a short HAPPY HUMPDAY dance before the presentation!

people have always been fascinated by the huge migrating flocks of Cranes. it was believed that Cranes carried small birds on their backs during their migratory travels over large bodies of water. it was believed the reason the Crances did this was that they enjoyed listening to the songs of the small birds.. this belief was held by the egyptians, the bedouins and the the Crow indians.the arawak indians pf venezuela believed tobacco was brought to them by a hummingbird who stole it from triniada and rode on the back of a crane to bring it to south america. it was believed that cranes swallowed stones to keep the wind from blowing them off course during their long migratory flights. upon arrival they would expel the stones. the stones were said to hold magical powers. if one held the stone they would find gold. also the stones were said to warn of impending danger.

The Whooping Crane is named for its call, which can be heard over great distances thanks to the bird’s extra-long trachea, which coils around its breastbone twice like a French horn. Like other cranes, the Whooper is noisy; the word “crane” comes from the Anglo-Saxon "cran," which means "to cry out."
The tallest flying bird in North America, Whooping Cranes measure up to five feet tall with a seven-to eight-foot wingspan. The species also has another distinction: It is the rarest crane in the world. Several decades ago, it almost disappeared forever due to habitat loss and hunting.
Still extremely rare, Whooping Cranes are on the WatchList and protected as an endangered species. Sadly, up to one-quarter of all Whoopers are shot and killed.
Whooping Cranes are one of our country’s most majestic birds—and also one of our most endangered. Though the species once ranged throughout the Great Plains and Gulf Coast regions, the Whooping Crane population was decimated by hunting and habitat loss, and only 16 birds remained in 1941.
Today, a major captive-breeding effort has helped the population rebound to nearly 600 individuals. But these birds are still under threat. A mated pair of Whooping Cranes was recently shot at a crawfish pond in Louisiana. Sadly, both have died from their injuries. Still worse, this is not unusual: Nearly one-quarter of all Whooping Crane deaths are caused by illegal shooting.
Whooping Cranes deserve the full protection of the law.

  Hi Indiana Sam
A FEW RANDOM BUT INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT BIRDS:
1)THE SEXIEST PARROTS HAVE FLOURESCENT FEATHERS. BOTH MALES AND FEMALES ARE ATTRACTED TO THOSE THAT HAVE THE BRIGHTLY COLORED PLUMAGE, WHICH GLOWS BY ABSORBING ULTRA VIOLET LIGHT. HUMANS CANT SEE IT BUT THE PARROTS SURE DO.
MALE BLUE-TITS THAT HAVE RANDOM YELLOW FEATHERS ON THEIR BREAST TEND TO BE BETTR PROVIDERS FOR THEIR CHICKS SO FEMALES CHOOSE THEM ABOVE OTHER MALES
SISKINS THAT HAVE A LARGER BLACK PATCH ON THEIR CHEST SIGNAL STATUS WITHIN THE COMMUNITY AND ALSO SHOW THEY ARE HUNGRIER THAN OTHER SISKINS SO MORE FOOD IS SHARED WITH THEM.
2)THE KEA A DISTANT RELATIVE OF THE PARROT HAS A RUBBER FETISH AND WILL EAT THE WINSHIELD WIPERS ON CARS AND HANG ONTO THE WIPERS EVEN IF THE CAR IS MOVING WHILE THEY CHOMP AWAY.
3)HUMMINGBIRDS CONSUME THEIR ENTIRE BODY WEIGHT A DAY TO PROVIDE FOR THEIR HIGH ENERGY LEVELS
4)THE HOATZIN, A VENEZUELAN BIRD, HAS A STOMACH SIMILIAR TO A COW. ITS FOOD FERMENTS INSIDE IT PRODUCING A AROMA MUCH LIKE COW DUNG. HENCE THE NICKNAME STINKBIRD.
5)PENGUINS ARE NATURES SUPER-POOPERS: CHINSTRAP AND ADELIE PENGUINS POINT THEIR REAR ENDS OUT OF THEIR NEST AND FIRE THEIR POO INTO THE AIR WITH SUCH FORCE IT LANDS 16 INCHES AWAY
6)VULTURES FEELING THREATENED WILL VOMIT VIOLENTLY IN THE DIRECTIONS OF THEIR ATTACKERS. THIS IS DONE OUT OF FEAR AND FOR SURVIVAL BECAUSE BY LOSING PART OF THEIR BODY WEIGHT THEY WILL BE ABLE TO TAKE TO THE AIR AND ESCAPE MUCH MORE QUICKLY. THE VOMIT ITSWLF IS SO FOUL WILL ALSO DISTRACT THE PREDATOR AND POSSIBLY KILL THEM
7)BIRDS CAN GET DRUNK
IN 2005 A LARGE FLOCK OF CEDAR WAXWINGS FLEW INTO THE GLASS WINDOWS OF A BUILDING. THE 100'S OF WAXWINGS WERE INTOXICATED ON HOLLY BERRIES. THE SEYCHELLES BLUE PIGEON FEEDS ON FERMENTED INDIAN ALMONDS AND BECOME SO INEBRIATED THEY CANT FLY FOR HOURS AFTERWARDS.

  Hi Indy Sam
How are u sweetie? Well, it looks like luck is on our side today! Our county was supposed to get 10 plus inches of snow from late Saturday night thru Monday 1pm, but it's been down graded to 3-6 inches...tho it's snowing pretty good right now! Luckily, it looks like the g-kids will have a 2 he delay instead of A cancellation...all snow days have been used & any more missed days must be made up at end of school year.
Today, we will finish the Parrot's Bill of Rights.

A PARROT'S BILL OF RIGHTS (Pt 2)
7. PLEASE DON'T PUNISH ME.
Just as I don't always understand ur peculiarities, u may not understand mine. I don't TRY to get in trouble - remember...a house is NOT the jungle. If I DO screw up, don't yell at me & NEVER hit me! I have very sensitive ears & I may never trust u again if u strike me. Hands are sometimes scary things to us. (Why in the world would u not be zygodactylous like us?) Even more importantly, we don't learn by punishment. We are gentle creatures who only strike back to protect ourselves; we learn through patience & love.
8. SPEAK MY "LANGUAGE".
I know u get upset with me when I knock over my water bowl, throw food, scream or pluck my feathers. I don't do these to annoy u - I am probably trying to tell u something (perhaps that I am hurting, lonely, or sad). Learn to speak MY (body) language. Remember that I, alone of all creatures on this planet, learn to speak yours!
9. SEE ME AS AN INDIVIDUAL.
I am a unique & feeling being. No two of us are alike. Please don't be disappointed in me if I don't talk like u wanted, or can't do the tricks that ur friend's parrot can do. But if u pay close attention to me (& I always empathize with u, whether u know it or not), I will show u a unique being who will give u so much more than talking & playing. Give me a chance to show u who I am; I think you'll find the effort worth it. And remember - I am NOT an ornament; I DO NOT enhance ANY living room decor. And I am NOT a status symbol - if u use me as such, I might nip at your turned-up nose!
10. SHARE YOUR LOVE WITH ME.
Above all, PLEASE remember that u are my Special Person. I put all my trust & faith in u. We parrots are used to being monogamous (no bar-hopping for us!) So please don't go away for long periods or give me away. That would be a sadness from which I may never recover.
If that seems to be asking a lot, remember - u could have learned about my needs BEFORE bringing me home. Even having a baby or taking a new job isn't a fair reason - you made a commitment to me FIRST! And if u think that u must leave me because u might die, provide for me forever after u leave. I may live to a ripe old age but I can't provide for myself. Remember I'm in a small cage amongst people who are NOT of my blood.
AWE SHUCKS! Blog too long & cut off! Will finish last part tomorrow & continue with first aid - poisoning & toxicity. See u tomorrow sweetie!

How are u sweetie? Congrats to my BBFF Snowflake for winning BOTM! She will be an amazing queen!

A PARROT'S BILL OF RIGHTS. by Stewart A. Metz, M.D.
1. GET TO KNOW ABOUT PARROTS BEFORE U BRING ME HOME.
I am NOT a domesticated pet like a dog or cat. I still have the spirit of the jungle in me. I have special needs, which u may find it hard to fill. Please don't learn these too late for my well-being. And please don't acquire one of my cousins wild from the jungle...it will jeopardize his survival & well-being, & that won't be a party for u either!
2. GIVE ME THE LARGEST HOME POSSIBLE.
I am used to flying through rainforests or savannahs. I have given up this great gift for ur pleasure. At the very least, give me enough room to flap my wings & exercise. And o need toys for my amusement & wood to chew...otherwise, I might confuse ur home with the forest & its trees.
3. GIVE ME A NUTRITIOUS DIET.
I need a wide variety of fresh & nutritious foods, even if they take time to prepare. I cannot survive on seed alone. Take time to learn what mynneeds are.
4. LET ME HAVE A "SOCIAL LIFE".
I am a gregarious flock animal...but I am NOT one of u. I need lots of socialization to learn how to act with u, & with my siblings. I also need to have adequate quality time with u every day - no matter what it schedule or other needs are. I am a living, feeling creature. Above all, I need to be able to have complete trust in u, & count on ur predictability in looking after me - EVERY DAY.
5. LET ME BE CLEAN.
I may like to drop food or even throw it, but I need meticulous cleanliness to be healthy. My skin itches without frequent showers, the barbs of my feathers won't seal if they become oily & worst of all, I may become ill if my food & water is not always sanitary.
6. I NEED MY OWN DOCTOR.
U may not understand my physiology & therefore u may not recognize it early on when I get sick. And it may be too late when u do, because I hide my illnesses (remember what I said about my being an animal of the jungle, where there are lots of predictors). And I need an avian vet - a specialisy (no HMOs for me please). If u can't afford one, perhaps u shouldn't have taken me home.
I will send u the 2nd part tomorrow. Have a great day sweetie!

How are u sweetie? WOW, did this month fly by! I can't believe this is my last day as ur BOTM queen! But I'm very happy & excited for my dear friend Snowflake, who will be my successor! First thing tomorrow, I will hand over the castle keys, & take her by the wing & give her the grand tour of her new home for the month!
Tomorrow, I will send u the first part of A Parrot's Bill of Rights. It's like a parrot owners manual, short version, with a bit of comic relief added in! Today, I will finish A Parrot's Prayer. I have to warn u, the second part is as heartbreaking as the first, & will leave a lump in ur throat.

A PARROT'S PRAYER (cont.)
LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER...
For all the macaws, cockatoos, amazons & conures that are stripped of their vocal cords for screaming; their sensitive beaks cut back to prevent biting.
LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER...
For all birds that end up for sale in pet shops or breeders like used merchandise, unwanted & frightened in strange surroundings with nothing more than the familiar sight of bars on a cage.
LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER...
For all the neglected birds that are sick with infections from filthy conditions & malnourishment that may never recover & know what it is like to feel healthy & be playful.
LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER...
For all the misconceived parrots who were beaten, stabbed, blinded & burned for just being a parrot.
LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER...
For every african grey, cockatoo & macaw that punishes itself by maiming their bodies & plucking their feathers & for those who have lost all spirit of life & sway their head low from side to side slowly into insanity.
LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER...
We ask humbly of you dear Lord to look upon all of your magnificent feather creations, protect them from evil & harm caused by man & to bring forth an awakening in the human heart & make it a kinder, gentler world for all captive birds.
AMEN.

How are u sweetie! I meant to be back sooner, but since mom is feeling a lot better, she has been busy! Plus giving me attention is a full time job! It's been over a month & mom still isn't smoking! That's another reason mom hasn't been online much...it's an activity she associates with smoking & the only time she craves one, but it's starting to go away! There is still a lot of first aid info I would like to go over, but first, we would like to share a couple things that are in one of mom's books. Both are very thought provoking & also very true. I will start with A PARROT'S PRAYER, (which is incredibly sad & infuriating!, then A PARROT'S BILL OF RIGHTS. Each should take 2 days.

A PARROT'S PRAYER
LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER...
For all the wild caught parrots so savagely netted & swept away from their families while their babies, dumped into burlap sacks, cried out in terror.
LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER...
For all the exotic birds that witnessed the destruction of all the blessed trees & fled fires in fear from man's thirst to dominate, stripping the land of all its inhabitants, leaving nothing but bare ground behind.
LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER...
For all the parrots that struggled through the capture, but died merciless in transport from the stress of overcrowded, barbaric, confinements & inconceivable horror.
LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER...
For all the survivors that made it into captivity but exist in a nightmare of confinement unable to use their God given wings of flight as they once remembered.
LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER...
For all the baby birds bred in captivity whose crops burned or have died needlessly from harshness of human hands.
LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER...
For all captive birds that have been erased from their owner's consciousness & are abandoned to a lifeless existence with only a distant memory of what it was like to hear a gentle voice from someone that used to care.
LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER...
For all those helpless creatures who don't know what it's like to live life as a bird or even to feel the breeze or sunlight but are doomed to darkness in closets or garages, trapped inside covered cages or shackled.

Heartbreaking, isn't it? I will finish the Parrot's Prayer tomorrow. Have a great day sweetie!

I hope you are enjoying the day. Nothing much going on around here. I played with mom this morning and then growled when Merlin decided he wanted some play time too! Dad will be home this weekend but he's been gone 5 weeks so I don't think Merlin is going to forgive him anytime soon! You know how cats are! He figures that mom is the one around to play with him and feed him so he's become a Velcro kitty! At least he has gotten use to being fed with Mandy when mom gets up. The first few weeks he was waking mom up 2 hours early because he figured he needed to eat!
All the Easter stuff is up at mom's store and she enjoyed scanning it all. She said it cheered her up to see such pretty pastel colors and all the cute things they have for Easter. I think spring will be here before we know it!
Enjoy the day and I do hope it's just perfect!

  Hi Indy Sam
Mom is back on line after three days without a computer, or rather without a monitor. The old one died, so Dad drove her around shopping on Sunday. She checked three stores, then they went to the library to use their computers and see what was available on line (plus leave a quick blog on the Calendar Page). Amazon had the best deal and a two day delivery. So now Mom is typing away for me with a 27" monitor!! She is a bit intimidated by the size, but as Dad says....All the birdies are bigger!! Hope to catch up with everybirdy quickly.

  Hi Indy Sam
DAY 31
How are u sweetie? It's been a rough week here! Sissy had her biopsy on Wednesday. She's a little bit sore, but not too bad. The Dr said she would have sissy's results in a week. Mom has a horrible case of bronchitis & hasn't been out of bed since last Saturday, except for a Drs appt on Tuesday & chest x-ray on Thursday! Mom is going to have to make another appt. She's finished her antibiotic & is feeling worse instead of feeling better.

I want to thank each one of my dear friends for all ur support during my campaign, it has really meant a lot to me! I want to thank everybirdy that put my name & page # on their name tags...that really meant a lot to me! I would like to give sweet Momma Deb a special thanks for all the awesome campaign pics that she made for me! If it wasn't for Momma Deb, I wouldn't have had any pics!

Mom ALMOST forgot my Hatchday, good thing sissy remembered! I'm sure it's the fever & lack of sleep!

There is still lots & lots of first aid info that I want to share with u! I will continue doing blogs! It should take up all of Feb, maybe March too! Mom is going to get this blog out, then spoil me the rest of my Hatchday! She needs to start treating me like a queen!

  Hi Indy Sam
DAY 26 -- NO BLOG #25
How are u sweetie? I wonder if anybirdy else had trouble getting on BC yesterday? I kept getting kicked off every time I tried to leave a blog, so I'll do yesterday's blog today.
Today, we will discuss:
DANGEROUS FOODS
In general, foods which are safe & healthy for parrots to eat. However, there are exceptions. These are a few examples of foods to avoid:
ALCOHOL -- Avoid completely; consumption can lead to brain damage & death.
APPLE SEEDS -- Contain cyanide. (All pits & seeds from fruits are best avoided.)
AVOCADO -- (Including guacamole.)vPit contains cyanide, which can leech from pit into the avocado flesh. Avoid completely; consumption is known to have caused death within hours.
CHOCOLATE -- Avoid completely; consumption of even small quantities can cause rapid onset of hyperactivity, vomiting, diarrhea, heartbeat irregularities, seizures, & death. If u suspect ur bird has ingested chocolate, administer 1 cc of Pepto-Bismol & rush ur bird to an avian vet.
CAFFEINE -- Includes caffeinated beverages, coffee grounds, & tea bags or ice tea crystals. See symptoms & treatment listed under chocolate.
FAT -- AVOID feeding high fat foods; excess fat over time can cause fatty liver disease, obesity, diarrhea & oily feather texture. Excess fat in the diet can also interfere with the absorption of other nutrients, such as calcium.
ONIONS: -- Excessive amounts of cooked or raw onions can be toxic to ur bird. Too many onions in the diet can destroy red blood cells & cause anemia, jaundice, & bloody urine.
RHUBARB LEAVES -- Avoid completely; consumption can cause death.
SALT -- Consumption can cause excessive drinking & urinating, depression, neurologic hyperactivity, tremors & death. When necropsied, birds having consumed excessive amounts of salt show a great deal of fluid buildup in the brain & hemorrhaging. Mushrooms, garlic, Mistletoe, tobacco, batteries, some coins, mirror backing, foil, are some other examples or bird poisons. We will cover toxic plants & heavy metal next. Here's hoping BC is back to normal. I suspected that there was a problem, coz at 6pm yesterday, I hadn't received any blogs. When I got on BC this morning, there was blogs there from yesterday...strange! This is the first time I didn't have a bog that I can't blame mom! I hope u had a good day & I'll see u tomorrow!

  Hi Indy Sam
DAY 24
How are u sweetie? Today, we will continue with POISONS -- HOME TREATMENT. First, I would like thank everybirdy for their prayers & kind words of encouragement. It really means a lot to us! I would also like to give a great big thank you to sweet Momma Deb for yet another fantastic campaign pic! I would not have had any campaign pics if it wasn't for Momma Deb, THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH!!!
POISONING -- HOME TREATMENT
First, try to determine what may have poisoned ur pet. Birds can be poisoned by inhaling fumes, by ingesting a poisonous plant or chemical, or by coming in contact with a poison on their skin.
WHAT YOU CAN DO AT HOME:
IF BY ACIDS, ALKALIS, OR PETROLEUM PRODUCTS: make the bird swallow mulk, mixed with Pepto-Bismol, egg white, or olive oil. DO NOT induce vomiting!!
IF BY OTHER: Induce vomiting. Use mustard & water solution put at back of the throat.
IF KNOWN: Call poison control center. (If burned, SEE BURNS, blog #18).
VETERINARY TREATMENT
Stabilizing the bird is most important, especially if she is in shock (blog #11), convulsing (blog #22), or having breathing problems (blog #17). A complete physical & general supportive care will be administered. If ingested, medication can be given to reduce the absorption of the poison into the bloodstream.
PREVENTION
You can help prevent poisoning in ur bird by following these steps:
*Make sure food & water is always fresh.
*Wash all fruits & vegetables before serving them to ur bird.
*Keep potentially poisonous household products out of ur bird's reach.
*Do not let ur bird fly free in the kitchen or bathroom.
*Do not use products with strong fumes, such as cleaning products, around ur bird.
*Do not use fungicides, herbicides, insecticides or rodenticides around ur bird without consulting ur avian vet.
*Do not let ur bird near ur houseplants.
*Do not leave cigarettes or other tobacco products where ur bird can reach them. Ideally,do not smoke around ur bird, either.
*Do not use nonstick cookware because overheated nonstick items can emit potentially fatal fumes for ur bird.
*Immediately consult ur avian vet. If u suspect any potential poisoning problems in ur pet.
Tomorrow, we will cover DANGEROUS FOODS & POISONOUS PLANTS. Sweet dreams sweetie, see u tomorrow!

  Hi Indy Sam
DAY 23
Hi everyone, I'm Sandy, TiaMaria's mom. Before I start today's blog, I would like to ask my dear BC friends to pray for my oldest daughter, Amanda. She is 31 & is the mom of my 3 grandkids. She went to the Dr on Tuesday because she was getting concerned about having swollen lymph nodes. The Dr was concerned & ordered a CT scan, which she had done yesterday morning. The results were given to the Drs office & they called my daughter & told her she needs to have a biopsy done. The Drs office scheduled her appt with the surgeon before they even called my daughter, she has an appt to see a surgeon tomorrow, coz they want the biopsy done ASAP. Dr told her they want the biopsy done to rule out lymphoma. We are all nervous wrecks over this. I appreciate any?all prayers for her. Thank you.
Today, we will start discussing POISONING & TOXICITY.
POISONING
Some poisons can kill a bird quickly. Others can cause clinical signs ranging from a mild digestive tract upset to a violent illness. If ur bird is poisoned & u are unable to reach ur avian vet, u should call an animal poison control center. I have the phone #s for two:
(1). ASPCA ANIMAL POISON CONTROL CENTER -- 1-888-ANI-HELP or, 1-888-426-4435 ($60.00 per case). The $60.00 consultation fee may be charged to ur credit card.

(2). NATIONAL ANIMAL POISON CONTROL CENTER (NAPCC). The NAPCC is located at the University of Illinois. Phones are answered 24 hours a day, & each call is handled by a vet who is specially trained in animal poisoning. There is a $65.00 charge per case, but it could mean the difference between life & death for ur bird. The NAPCC's numbers are: 1-800-548-2423 (billed as a flat rate of $65.00) or 900-680-0000 (billed on a per-minute basis.
SIGNS -- A poisoned bird may suddenly regurgitate, develop diarrhea, bloody droppings, redness or burns around her mouth, go into convulsions, become paralyzed, go into shock or any number or other abnormalities. Tomorrow, we will continue with POISONING, starting with HOME TREATMENT. Hope u had a good day, see u tomorrow!

  Hi Indy Sam
DAY 22
How are u sweetie? BRRRR! It's a cold day today! At 10am, it's still 3 degrees BELOW ZERO! Supposed to have a high of 5 degrees! My blog yesterday was too long & got cut off. I will first finish up: HEATSTROKE
PREVENTION
You can reduce ur bird's chances of suffering heatstroke by keeping her out of direct sun, providing her with ample supplies of clean, fresh water & not keeping her in a car on a hot day. Interior temps in a car can rise quickly during hot weather, which can cause serious problems for all pets.
For about the next week, starting tomorrow, we will be discussing POISONING & TOXICITY. Today, we will cover CONVULSIONS, as this is a symptom of poisoning.
CONVULSIONS (SEIZURES)
A convulsion, which is a series of violent & involuntary muscle contractions, indicates that there is a very serious underlying medical problem. Convulsions are not a diagnosis, rather they are the result of any number of problems that include head trauma, infection, lead poisoning, some nutritional deficiencies, low blood sugar, low blood calcium, heatstroke, neurological disease & epilepsy (brain malfunction causing recurring seizures.
SIGNS --In the minutes before a convulsion a bird may appear apprehensive & restless. A convulsion may only affect a single wing or leg or could involve the entire body or affected limb. The bird may also lose her balance & fall to the floor or even lose consciousness. Convulsions usually last only a few seconds, but can last a minute or two. The time interval between them can vary. They may occur a few minutes apart, or they may occur days or even months apart. There is no effective home treatment for convulsions. The underlying cause must be determined & treated to prevent further episodes. Remove objects from bird's cage, such as toys & perches, to protect her from further injury. This. Is an emergency & ur avian vet will want to examine ur bird immediately. Medication is available to control convulsions. However, to actually prevent them from occurring, the underlying cause should be determined.
See u tomorrow sweetie, pleasant dreams!

  Hi Indy Sam
DAY 21----No BLOG #20
How are u sweetie? Today, we will cover FROSTBITE & HEATSTROKE.
FROSTBITE (HYPOthermia)
Frostbite is an emergency because, in a moderate case, the bird's toes could be lost; or, in a severe case, the bird could die.
SIGNS -- The frostbitten area will be very painful, cold & hard to the touch. After several days the affected area may become very hard, dry & dark black in color.
HOME TREATMENT -- place the bird in a warm environment (85° to 90°F.). U can use a heat lamp or a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel. Take extreme care not to burn the bird. Warm up the damaged tissue very gradually in a warm circulating water bath. Food & water should be easily accessible to bird. Monitor the air temp to avoid overheating. Determine the cause of the chilling. Watch for signs of shock (blog #11). If it is due to environmental conditions such as power outage or drafts, fix the problem or locate the bird. Ur avian vet will want to examine ur bird.
VETERINARY TREATMENT -- Ur avian vet will warm the bird gradually by placing her in an incubator & administering intravenous (IV) fluids. Ur avian vet will want to examine the bird.
PREVENTION -- Keep birds indoors during extremely cold weather. Most pet birds can tolerate outdoor temps that dip down to 30°F. Cold temps combined with dampness &/or wind will create an ideal environment for frostbite to develop. Birds housed outdoors in cold weather should not be kept on metal perches.
HEATSTROKE (HYPERthermia)
Overheated birds can go into shock quickly.
Heatstroke most commonly occurs if:
*The bird is kept in a cage in direct sunlight where there is no shade or shelter from the sun.
*A bird is in a vehicle with the windows closed or with inadequate ventilation.
*Too much supplemental heat, in the form of a heat lamp or heating pad, is supplied.
*The bird is wrapped in a towel (a common method of restraint) for an excessive length of time.
SIGNS -- An environment that is very warm & a bird that is panting, holding her wings down & away from her body. The bird will also be extremely weak & could go into shock or a coma. Overheating tends to occur more commonly in birds that are overweight, so keep ur bird at its ideal weight. Heatstrokevi?+
HOME TREATMENT -- First, remove the bird from her hot environment & place her in a cool area. Start to reduce her body temp by placing her in an air-conditioned room, in front of a fan, or spraying her with cool water from a misting bottle. Make sure the feathers are wet to the skin. Offer the bird cool water to drink if she is able, or begin to give her a few drops of cool water by mouth. Contact ur avian vet's office for further instructions.
VETERINARY TREATMENT -- In addition to general supportive care, the patient will be placed in a cool, well-oxygenated & moist environment. Dehydration can be treated by administering fluids. The bird should be closely monitored for at least 24 hours.
PREVENTION -- You can reduce ur bird's chances of
