Going away to college was a wonderful experience, but living in a dorm room meant excluding birds from my life! I had kept budgies since I was 11, and being separated from feathered companions for four years seemed to spark an even greater need for them! During most of my free time my senior year, I absorbed as much information on parrots as I possibly could (sometimes favoring these books over my textbooks - oops!). After some deliberation, my parents agreed to pay for half of the cost of a new parrot as a graduation gift!

Through all my research, I decided a poicephalus parrot would be perfect for me; small, relatively quiet, etc. - great for someone aiming for apartment life in the near future. After some hunting for local breeders, I found one breeding senegals and red-bellies only a few miles from my alma mater! The red-belly pair were new to this breeder, and they had just laid their first clutch there. For whatever reason, perhaps not yet being comfortable in their new home, only one of the three chicks that hatched survived long enough to be taken for hand feeding. I drove to the breeder's house to visit the little chick every other week (scroll down below the blog to see some baby pictures!) until it was weaned and ready to take home.

I like to think that the one tiny chick survived for me - it was destiny! The little guy came home with me and fit right in with my family and I. His name is Oliver, and he has grown to be a healthy, affectionate, and very silly member of my "flock"! I couldn't imagine life without him!

Hi! My name is Oliver

I am a Red-Bellied Parrot from Attleboro, MA.

Oliie, Goober, Bubba.

8 years old   M

Red-Bellied Parrot

Red grapes are always treated with careful dissection, so as not to waste a bit! Corn on the cob is also a favorite. Given more sparingly, nuts and millet are savored too!

Anywhere my favorite people are! I love my playstand in the TV room. I'll roughhouse with my toys while my people watch a movie. I also love my mobile basket - an unfinished wicker basket lined with newspaper on the bottom, and a favorite toy hanging from the handle. This is my safety spot during adventures around the house!

When my favorite person leaves the room, the sound of the kitchen faucet running, the shower, strangers attempting to be friends too quickly.

I love her because she keeps my home clean, keeps me fed and watered, plays with me everyday, and does her best to help everyone understand how to get along with me!

I love to play hanging upside-down! Though no matter my person's gentle coaxing, I refuse to enjoy lying on my back (as many poicephalus tend to like). I also have a special ritual when eating my pellets: I pick a pellet out of the dish, bring it over to my water bottle, use the pellet to push in the metal ball, get the pellet just damp enough, carry it to a certain perch, eat it; and repeat..

"Whaddya mean, 'Whaddya mean?'?".
