  Hi, Hulk
Great to see you at the Milonga. Congrats on your award. Such fun we had.

Uh, oh, bit your mom? Yikes! Guess it'll be less holding you or less out time until you calm down. We imagine a bite from your beak would hurt a lot. One of us drew blood once but it was totally mom's fault. Our dad can't stand when we are overly squawky. In those instances we are put into another room and the door shut. It's fine since we have each other.

Have a great day, wing hugs and a vote, Pearl and Silver.

  Hi Hulk
Yep, fish fries are great! My train is pretty much toast, I've been going nonstop at it for a few days now.
Today mom got some bad news. Quincy and Danny, the bob white quail who lived at the center, got put down yesterday. It's a shame, but both boys were close to 9 years old! In the wild, they live for a year or 2, and in captivity they can survive to 5, so we were lucky to have the boys for nearly 9 years. Mom cried, of course, but she realized a few months ago that their time was short.
In other news, mom attended a mammal handling class today, and at the end, they said to take mammals off site the volunteer first had to go with staff a time or 2. Mom asked if that was necessary for her, since she's been doing that for 13 years! They told her no, they would grandfather her in, haha.
Then she worked at the museum for the Preservation Fair today. She worked at a table that showed the effects of things like water, abrasion, light, and even using the wrong kind of pen could damage artifacts, prints, photos, etc. Did you know that Sharpies are not permanent, and can cause damage to your CDs? Mom found that out today. She writes on all the CDs she burns, and uses a sharpie. Guess that stops today.
I hope you are having a great evening. We'll talk more tomorrow. Hugs to you, Willie

Come visit me, Gizmo, I miss you, sweet boy, Willie, Peppino, Divo & Falco.

  Heya, Hulk!
Gotta say that the fouls called on the Badgers were so bogus--one of them, the other team grabbed and shoved one of our players. It was pathetic, cuz the other team got the free throw. Go figure. But they won, and it was soooo sweet!

Make sure your Mom takes care on the way to work tomorrow. They say we are gonna get sleet and snow and rain and freezing rain--but you get it before we do. Sheesh! So tired of winter!!

We won 3rd Place for the Couples picture tonite at the milonga! We didn't stay too long, I think we left just as you arrived! Our internet is very slow and it is taking forever to load the pages. Picabo got 3rd place too for the Hats. Raffi got Best Overall! All the pics were so good, it was hard.
How is your weekend going? We hear it is cold up there. After being 101F here on Thursday, a cold front came in yesterday afternoon and we're in the 70s today and very windy again. Mom did take us outside for a couple of hours late in the afternoon but mostly we stayed inside and watched tv with dad all day.
I am dreaming of us at the milonga, dancing the nite away and drinking green beer!
Lots of love, Squeaky

  Hi Hulk
Yes, that's what I'm wearing tonight!
It was so sad to see the last egg start to hatch and not make it. The mom eagle was so sad. She kept staring at it an then wouldn't leave the nest for hours. She even tried to sit on it to keep it warm. Both eagles are perching near the nest tree.
We are out of the teens and back to sun with high 20's today. More snow coming on Sunday.
My parronts are cleaning the basement, why they do these un-fun things I just don't know?
I'm busy getting ready to party at the Milonga tonight ... see you there or blog you on Sunday.

  Hi Hulk
This morning was another dark, dreary, dismal pouring rainy day here and then by late morning it all turned to snow, with big heavy flakes coming down, our highs for the day will be 34 and our lows will be 28. Its 34 right now with those big flakes of snow still coming down. Its not sticking to much just the lawns and not the deck or the walkway or the street which is good.Mom was busy today cleaning our cages and room, then she vacuumed the whole downstairs of the house and kept trying to get Dixie to eat.Ever since Mario flew to Rainbow Bridge he stopped eating.Mom has the day off today so she will be spending more time with us between playing catch up with the house chores. Its going to be an uneventful day here and that's just what we need right now,for Mom to stay home with us and not have to leave. We haven't had one of these days in quite some time now!
Your poor sweet Mom not feeling good still, please give her a warm hug from my Mom to help make her feel better and we all give her warm wing hugs too, those sore throats are just awful and it makes eating so uncomfortable. And having a headache and stiff neck is really adding to the pain of it all too,we are praying that she will start to feel better soon.Oh how could you bite her so hard like that?I sure do hope you said you were sorry! She has enough to deal with and now a big booboo on her hand from you which must be really sore if it bled like that! But I can understand where those hormones are coming from and I sure wish that winter will hurry up and be over with!
Wishing you a greyt day and I'm sending you all my love along with warm birdie hugs and soft beakie kisses!Loving you always and forever, sweet buddy,Love Kallie

  Hi Hulk
Birds That Play
All birds engage in playful behaviors, and more intelligent bird species need greater amounts of the mental stimulation that comes from play as they develop. Bird species that can seem especially playful include…Jays, crows, rooks, ravens, magpies and other corvids,Parrots, parakeets, macaws and Keas,Tits, chickadees, nuthatches and small finches,Gulls, terns and related species.
Many social and adaptable birds also play, as do young birds of nearly all species as they socialize with their siblings in the nest. The extent of play and how much play each bird species carries into maturity varies, and different birds engage in different types of play to help them develop a range of skills.
Types of Bird Play
There are many different behaviors birds engage in that could appear to be play. The most common playful actions include…
Manipulation: Using the bill or talons to drop, toss, bend, tear, rip or otherwise manipulate objects, even objects without any food value.
Investigation: Seeking out unique objects or trying a wide range of different foods, continually noting new objects and poking or prodding them.
Chasing: Following one another in short or acrobatic flights, or chasing other objects such as insects or fluttering leaves.
Taunting: Teasing or deliberately harassing one another or other creatures, such as teasing a domestic cat or instigating fights.
Balancing: Swinging, swaying or dangling on wires or weak branches, possibly releasing and reattempting different acrobatic actions.
Curiosity: Responding to pishing or other unique noises, such as being attracted by ringtones, mechanical noises or music.
Mimicry: Imitating an adult's behavior, including physical actions such as foraging or preening as well as songs and sounds.
Not all playful birds will engage in the same behaviors, but they often try different actions and activities as they are learning new skills and refining their abilities. Play may be only between birds of the same species, while some types of play, particularly chasing or taunting, may be between birds of different species.

Oh, yes, if something is within beak range then not our fault if we decide to sample it. Think parronts just don't realize how far we can stretch or how quick we can chomp. Same goes for leaving a book nearby.

Our temps cooled a tad. Being in the lower 70s is so much nicer than those mid 80s. Supposed to hover 70s-80s for awhile but certainly hope we stay in the 70s range.

I'm guessing they only have 1 ballroom ? I don't want to get lost.

I guess Spot knew the Ballroom page number, that's good. :)

Since he said it starts at 4 pm EST I'll try to set up early so that if some birdies can only come in the morning it will be okay. I'll be there with my flock to welcome them. :)

Thanks, I really like my bunny. I got her last Easter.
Everyone seems to have a cold or sinus problem. I blame it on the nasty weather.
I'm not biting but dropping tons of feathers.
Today I went for a ride in the car with mom. I saw some sun and asked if we were going to Florida? She said no but we should be. Dad was using some smelly ant stuff in the basement so, we had to be gone most of the day.
Very sad news today for the Pitts-Hays Eagle parronts. The remaining egg cracked open but was not viable. Mom eagle is so sad and staying with the lost baby. I hope to see them again next year.

  Heya, Hulk!
Yeah, Mom has a lot to think about. Mom says that her boss told her that she is going to talk to the Big Boss about projects in other areas, as they don't want to lose her from the company. Mom also got submitted to a financial company but she has no hopes of that one--she worked in insurance pretty much her whole life, or as a nurse. So she understands health insurance and health stuff best. And then there is the tempting retirement part. So she will see what happens. She should have money coming in to the end of April or early May. She will figure it out by then!

We are winter here again. UGH. Snow in some places last night. YUCK. Not sure what the weekend will bring. Wish it would be spring!!

  Hiya Hulk!
Oh your poor Mom...That has happened to my Mom once, but it wasn't a crane, it was a Moose! Talk about heart palpitations! This was when Mom was visiting a friend in VT...she left early in the morning, and they warned her about moose before she left...sure enough, she went up a hill, around a bend, and there it was....good thing the brakes worked well!

More recently Mom got hit by a baby deer. She wasn't even moving...the cars in front of her had slowed down, and she stopped when she noticed a Doe and 2 fauns on the other side of the road. Well, one of the fauns was so spooked that he ran right into her car! Left some dents, too. He must not have been too hurt, tho, cuz he ran off as fast as he could. Momma and sister deer just stood there watching him, like "Where you goin' now, you fool!"

Today was cage cleaning, so we got out earlier than usual...just as well, it's been a dreary sort of day here. Do you believe they're still forecasting snow for here? Nothing substantial, we hope, but they've been wrong before. Let's hope they err on the too cold side!! Mom needs to start some seeds out in the sunroom soon!

Hugs to you and the flock....

Hey Buddy, the train is cool! I've chomped the wheels off the engine so it can't go anywhere, and I'm chomping all the square blocks one by one. They make the coolest toothpicks! Give it a try, I bet you'll like it once you start.
The spinosaurus pics are on Falco's page, finally.
It was snowing when mom left the center today! Where is spring??? She had the bunny room, but there was only one bunny in there, so it was quick. She also cleaned the main aviary and the rolling aviary with the doves in. There were 5 doves and 13 pigeons today! She got the areas cleaned, got all the birds and the bunny fed, then went in the kitchen and did dishes for about 45 minutes, until her hands got too cold and she had to take a break. The gas guys are still up there digging, so maybe some time soon there will be gas again. The dryer turned out to be gas, so the interns are taking laundry to the shelter or to a local laundromat to clean. It's pretty much a full carload when they go, too.
Tonight is the last night of the fish fry at a local church where mom goes every Friday in Lent for dinner for her and Jeff, our neighbor. Mom told him to savor it tonight, as it will be a year before he tastes anything this good again.
I hope you are having a good day, getting spring like weather, and of course, enjoying cuddles and scritches. Hugs, Willie

  Hi Hulk
Birds do a lot of activities that may seem smart, but how much of their behavior is instinct instead of intelligence? Ornithologists are continually studying birds and learning new information about their brains, how they think and why they behave why they do.

Deciding just how smart birds are depends on how intelligence is defined. Birds exhibit a wide range of intelligent behaviors, including good memories, extensive communication, planning for the future and remembering the past. Some birds can solve problems, and others have been observed playing – both activities that indicate more than just basic instinct. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines intelligence as:The ability to learn or understand or to deal with new or trying situations or the ability to apply knowledge to manipulate one's environment.
Do birds do this? Scientific studies indicate that yes, birds do learn, and every backyard birder knows birds are capable of adapting to new environments and conditions. Quantitative measurement of bird intelligence is difficult because birds cannot take intelligence tests or attend classes to be measured with their peers. Observations and studies of birds are revealing that birds may be far more intelligent than initially believed.
Bird Brain Structure
Brain size and structure is not an automatic gauge of intelligence, but it can be a clue. Birds may be small, but they have a proportionally large brain compared to their overall body and head sizes – in fact, bird's brains are similarly proportioned to primates. Studies of birds' brain anatomy also suggests that while the structure is different than that of mammals' brains, birds may have a higher degree of connectivity between the sections of their brains, which could indicate more intelligence and faster reasoning than previously believed.
Evidence of Bird Intelligence
The best indication of how smart birds are is direct observations of birds acting intelligently. While some observations have been made under scientifically controlled circumstances and through laboratory experiments, other observations have come from casual birders who notice their favorite birds behaving in peculiar ways, ways that seem planned and premeditated.

  Hi, Hulk
We do tend to want to look under things. The couch, the armoire, table, but don't think we ever chomped on any wood when down there. The wood we chewed on was sitting on our birdhouse and it was pushed too close to the armoire and we helped ourselves to redecorating the door, the top part, heehee.

Our weather is opposite yours. It was mid 80s yesterday and just too warm for spring. However, we won't complain since Southern CA suffered thru being in the 90s.

  Hi Hulk,
Thanks for offering to help with the Celebration if Angel Mario's life.

I'm waiting to get some information from King Flitzer like which Ballroom and the page number.

But I'm afraid it might have to be next week Sunday as there's not enough time this week to spread the word and set up the decorations and stuff. Well need more time, plus the Milonga is Saturday so a lot of the birdies might be hung over or too tired.

I think it would be best next Sunday that would give us more time to prepare.

What do you think?

Let me know as I'm still waiting to hear from King Flitzer too.

I thank you in advance for helping and participating with the preparations for Angel Mario's Celebration of Life party.

Mom got the three of us all fed and cleaned, swept our room and then she got my dad some breakfast and then after a few more quick pick ups around the house my dad took her to Nana's where she met skin bro and Mom helped Nana get her shoes and socks on,and skin bro got her down the two steps out into the garage and into the car.Mom folded up the walker and skin bro put it in his trunk and they went to the surgeons office. When they got there all the employees were outside and the fire alarm was going off, then the fire engines came and they went into the building so Mom,Nana and skin bro waited out in the parking lot for awhile,Nana was supposed to be there at 12:45pm but by the time the fire engines left it was after one.Skin bro drove up to the front of the building and he helped get Nana out of the car and Mom got her walker and they went into the building while skin bro parked the car. They had to wait another 20 minutes or more until someone came back into the office and then the receptionist gave Mom five pages of info that needed to be filled out,she helped Nana fill them out and then she had to go down and get another x-ray taken then after that she got seen by the surgeon.Nana is healing nicely and she has another appointment to see him on May 6th for a 6 week check up.Then from there they went to DQ which finally opened up in Falmouth and they all had a Blizzard, skin bro had a grasshopper mousse, both Mom and Nana had one with all fruit in it.Nana was hankering for some Honey Dew donuts and skin bro drove to Cotuit to the shop there and they made some Barvarian cream donuts up fresh for Mom as those were Nana's favorite so they got a dozen donuts there while Nana waited in the car, then they went to Stop&Shop to get some bananas and salad mix.It was pouring rain hard while they were out and Mom was so cold from getting wet in the rain. They went back to Nana's and skin bro got Nana safely back into the house and Mom made coffee for everyone and they had a donut and coffee, shortly after that skin bro took Mom home as it was well after 5:30pm and Mom still had to go home and make dinner for my dad. When Mom got home everyone fairly much ate but Dixie didn't touch any of his food at all,he didn't even eat the animal cracker that dad gave us all for a snack.Mom tried everything to get him to eat and he refused.Nana told Mom to take Dixie with her tomorrow when she comes there to help with the trash,Dixie always eats there and he may be missing his time with Nana and the car ride.
Please give your sweet Momma Sandy a big warm hug from my Mom to help her feel better, and we all hope that on her day off tomorrow she spends lots of time snuggling with you and taking it easy, having a cold is no fun at all and my Mom sure can understand how tired she must feel and that's even worse.Oh if only you knew just what you all mean to us there! We love you

Come visit me, Gabbie, Kallie, Peepers & Dixie.

  Hi Hulk!
Our day started out with no electric! They were replacing and adding transformers around the corner from us. My parronts went to see the Insurgent movie and left us home! It was okay but mom liked the first movie better. She read all three books and she didn't like the second one much so maybe she didn't have high hopes for the second movie either. She still prefers Hunger Games.
It was very hot today. By the time my parronts got home, the electric was back on but it was 101F at our house! And you know we don't have a/c in our house. Fortunately, concrete houses remain quite cool inside on hot days so it wasn't too bad. Mom kept us indoors though since it was cooler than out on the porch. And she went swimming!
The census guy came yesterday and asked my parronts all sorts of questions. One of the questions was how many lights are here at our house. Mom knew the answer to that - 103! Well, the guy's eyes almost popped out of his head. Most of the locals have only 1-2 lights in their houses. And he asked if it was okay to put down 99 becos the form only had space for double digits, not triple! It was fun and he got to practice his English which was pretty good.
Well, our internet was off most of the day but now it is going pretty fast. I hope it holds up during all this tourist business. We went to vote for the milonga pics tonite and after we voted, we realized we had missed the deadline so guess they won't be counted! I wonder if we'll win for couple? We are a greyt looking couple! hehehe! That is nice your mom is home tomorrow. I hope she isn't getting sick. It will be nice for you to hang out with her all day though. Fun! My mom is home all day tomorrow too so I'm happy too!
Sweet dreams! Love, Squeaks

  Heya, Hulk!
Well, we are back to winter here. Tonight it is supposed to get down to 19 degrees. Can you believe that?

Mom found out this morning that her contract will end as of April 10th. So she will either look for a new job, or she will look into early retirement. Now you know what I want? Her to retire, of course. So sorry for the short c/p note, but Mom had to update her resume and send it to the company she works for tonight.

Happy Thursday!
Your buddy,
Kaji

Come visit me, Kaji ~ Vote Boo Boo #162724 for BOTM in April!.

  Hey Hulk!
I need your help buddy. I've asked King Flitzer if we could use the Castle grounds to hold a Celebration of Life in Little Mario Adlers name.

He says okay so I will need some help with the decorating.

Can you and your flock give us a wing?

I'm gonna be asking more friends for help in making this a nice memorial for Mario Adler, Dixie's lil frother.

Pookie bows and says the Castle Ballroom it is!

Can you help spread the word for us?

Mom only has her phone thingy and its a little slow at times.

I'd really appreciate all the help we can get.

Mario was a sweet sweet little guy and he will be sorely missed, especially by me and my flock.

I'll gather some friends and well decorate the ballroom.

Thank you so much again for all your help and for letting us use the Castle Ballroom.

We just hafta spread the word so that no one gets left out.

Sending big birdie hugs and a vote.

We want to hold it this coming Sunday.

Love,

Pookie, Laka Aolani and Angel Sallykins

Come visit me, Angel Sallykins, Pookie strutin' new Camo duds & Laka.

  Hi Hulk
Bald Eagles are nesting on all three of Pittsburgh's major rivers! Who knew the day would never come when Pittsburghers would be cheering for the Eagles…Bald Eagles, that is!

It has probably been more than 250 years since Bald Eagles last nested along Pittsburgh’s three rivers. In the 18th century, suitable nesting habitat in the form of mature tall trees was stripped from the hillsides flanking the rivers to meet the lumber and fuel demands of a rapidly growing human population in the area; second, industrialization beginning in the 19th century led to extensive unregulated pollution of the rivers, which decimated fish populations that eagles feed on; third, beginning in the mid-20th century eagles (and many other birds) showed signs of succumbing to the unintended side effects of widespread use of the pesticide DDT (developed for use in World War II) which eventually caused chronic nesting failure for the species. As recently as the mid-1980s, there were just a few remaining nesting Bald Eagles pairs anywhere in Pennsylvania, all of these in the northwest corner of the state.
One nest, located on the Monongahela River in the community of Hays is the most famous because a web camas been set up to view the nest. millions of people are viewing the nesting activity. Last year this pair successfully raised three eagle babies. this year they only layed 2 eggs. one of the eggs had a crack in it and the mom tried to keep it together but when the dad eagle came to sit on the egg he saw the crack and threw the egg out of the nest. during a recent snowstorm the mom eagle was totally covered in snow while incubating the single egg
The Bald Eagle, has made a tremendous comeback throughout its range in the lower 48 states. Its recovery is due to enforcement of federal laws protecting it from persecution, the banning of DDT, which bio-accumulated in eagles and other piscivorous (fish-eating) birds, eventually causing complete reproductive failure through the thinning of their egg shells to the point that eggs simply broke when parent birds tried to incubate them; passage in the same year of the federal Clean Water Act, and, direct recovery measures taken by our Game Commission, which brought nestling Bald Eagles from healthy populations to hacking sitese when the state’s breeding population was down to just a few nesting pairs. Similar efforts by game agencies in surrounding states also have contributed to the rapid increase in the number of nesting Bald Eagles in Pennsylvania. By 2000, there were about 50 known nesting pairs of eagles in the state; as of 2012, more than 200 nesting locations are known for Bald Eagle in Pennsylvania, including nests in almost every county!
