  Hi Hulk
Mom and I got out for the sunbath this morning at 9, but we were back inside by 9:45 because it was already getting too warm. High in the upper 90s today, and Mom has a pre-surgery appointment with her GI doc this afternoon at 5. Probably be about 90 still, and she is sure glad Gloria's a/c works well and cranks up fast.

Last night when Dad poked his head into my room to say hi, I was right at the door! He backed up and couldn't close the door without squishing me. So he walked down the hall and I waddled right behind him. He walked pretty slowly, so I did too and when he stopped I did too and gave him the old evil eye. Then Mom came out of my room and scooped me up. I am sure I had Dad terrified though...don't you think?

  Hi Hulk
hello everybirdie. Zeena here on my final day of July. Today I want to take the time to thank you all for all the wonderful comments, and helpful topic input. When any bird runs for BOTM, it is a family affair. No one can make it to the BC Castle with out the help and votes of their many friends. I have met many awesome birds this month, and have learned a great deal about the various species we visited.
With a flock legacy of BOTMs to follow after, it was a challenge to equal their efforts and enthusiasm. Sky, Little Angel (Adler) and my frother Casey set the measure by which I hoped to inform and share with you. I had the most wonderful month. Thank you one and all.
This being my final BOTM Post I decided to stop by and visit with a beautiful and unusual species that is a delight to watch.

The Black Palm Cockatoo is considered to be the most beautiful of the Cockatoos.

However, the Palm Cockatoo is endangered in the wild and is mostly kept for breeding purposes. While the Palm Cockatoo is known for being loving and affectionate, just like any Cockatoo, they are also very needy. If you own a Cockatoo, then you know why they are called the "love sponges" of the parrots. And you also know that they are the most needy of all the pet birds and often love their owners too much.

Cockatoos require a lot of time and attention--much more than any other pet bird. If you are able to spend at least two full hours a day with your bird (out of his cage), not leave the house for 6 or more hours everyday, cook for your bird and provide him with a variety of healthy foods, handle the loud screaming, afford the large cage and huge amount of toys, and deal with the adjustment stage that can include aggression, then rescuing a Cockatoo might be a great idea. Make sure you research as much as possible because you don't want to add to the already out-of-hand rescue problem.

Because so many Cockatoos are left to rescues, I highly encourage you to visit your local parrot rescue, see what I'm talking about, and consider rescuing one of these poor majestic creatures instead of buying one in a store. If you can handle all this, then this really might be the right bird for you.

But keep in mind that Black Palm Cockatoos in particular are very hard to find. They can cost upwards of $16,000 because of their rarity and endangered status. So, don't get your hopes up if you have your mind set on this species.

We are missing summer! It's another cool day here too, but it's supposed to hit 80, so we'll see what happens. There was a strange glow in the sky this morning, and mom actually put on sunglasses. She told us not to stare at it, in case it gets scared and goes away. Even if it's gorgeous today, it will not be a pool day for mom because of the appointment with the eye surgeon. We'll let you know what's going on tomorrow.
Meanwhile, I hope you have a good day today and get some sunshine and blue skies, along with all the cuddles you have come to expect. Hugs, Willie

I'm finding out what some of these strange thing are in my Cinn-A-Castle. Mom said they are toys for me to play with. I found out what the bell s for, and after a few minutes, it makes her tell me to stop. Some birds certainly get into a lot of antics during the Milongas. Never know what'll happen, but all in good fun. Always great food and music too.

Not sure eggactly why so many numbers to dial a call in CA but suspect that with our big population and so many cell phones, fax numbers, etc, etc they were running out of numbers. Several times added new area codes but finally just had to add the eggstra number to dial too.

We were not really any cooler yesterday but didn't seem too bad. Guess the family is (gasp!) getting used to it. Think having it cool off at night makes the difference.

Have a great day, wing hugs and a vote, Pearl and Silver.

Mom left early this morning with skin sis to go to zumba class for 9:30am and they got stuck in more traffic, skin sis was stuck in it getting to Mom and they were late for class about fifteen minutes. Then right from zumba they picked up Nana and went to Trader Joe's to get all us fids some bean mix,and a few other things, then they went to the Mall for skin sis to get something with the coupon she had for Gap,but neither she nor Mom found anything they liked there, then they went to Ocean Lot where she got some wild bird seed and a birthday present for skin sis,The Dollar Tree, and Shaw's and both Mom and Nana picked up some groceries there.By the time Mom got home dad had already given us our snacks and Mom had to put the groceries away and get dad his dinner and us cleaned up and ready for bed.We never got outside as it was late after 6pm and getting cold,it was a nice warm sunny day here, the temperatures were 77.Mom is hoping to get her chores done early tomorrow so we can go outside and get another soaking shower and dry off in the sunshine! Its supposed to be a good day again tomorrow, the whole weekend will be rain,no laundry on the line for Mom then!

  Hi Hulkster
Hello to all my BC friends. Zeena here with today's BOTM Post. Today we will take a look at one of natures most beautiful birds, also my Momma Deb's" dream-bird", the Hyacinth Macaw.
The largest species of macaw, Hyacinth grows to be up to 40 inches (1 m) long. The Hyacinth Macaw survives today in three known distinct population in southern Brazil, eastern Bolivia and northeastern Paraguay. In 1990, the wild population was estimated to be 2,500 birds. The world’s captive population is probably much larger, numbering in the thousands. Today, the wild population is less then 600 individuals. They are critically endangered in their native habitat.
Of the 145 species of parrot in Central and South America, 45 are in danger of extinction. All 18 species of macaws are threatened. The primary causes are habitat loss and heavy exploitation for the pet trade. The Hyacinth Macaw is especially vulnerable to capture and habitat destruction because it is noisy, intrinsically fearless, predictable, and dependent on palm trees. Hyacinth Macaws do not breed every year even under the best circumstances, so the predation on chicks is particularly bad for the species’ survival. Since captured young survive so poorly (up to 99 percent die between capture and final sale), adults are sometimes trapped through liming of perches or use of baited clap-nets. Still, for every macaw that arrives safely abroad, it is likely that five died on the way.
The United States is the largest market for the exotic pet trade. In the last decade, 8.5 million birds, at least 85 percent of birds captured in the wild, were imported or smuggled into the United States. Even when the export of birds is controlled, the domestic bird trade often is not regulated. Another threat to the Hyacinth Macaw is the increased commercial sale of feather art by the Kayapo Indians of Gorotire in southern Brazil. The feathers from up to 10 Hyacinth Macaws are needed to make one headdress. In addition, ranchers kill Macaws because they believe that Hyacinths damage palm trees, which ranchers use for fenceposts, and scare cattle with their noisy behavior. In some places, local people still hunt Macaws for meat. Add to this clear-cutting of Rainforest and you can see the danger the Hyacinth population has to becoming extinct within the next decade.
Compound all the above and it is easy to calculate that their best chance of survival as a species is through captive breeding. Selling in Canada at upwards to $40,000US each these beauties of the Rainforest will remain one the worlds most desired Macaw species.
One more Question for Thought.
It is often people’s love of animals that causes them to desire exotic animal pets. What can be done to educate pet owners about the impacts of wild-caught birds and other animals?

  Hi Hulk
I know, summer goes by so fast! The guy collecting parking fees at the museum said to mom we are lucky this year. We are getting 2 Septembers! It's been another cool, cloudy day here. There were thunderstorms predicted, but so far we haven't seen any.
Mom's tour this morning was a group of day care kids ranging from about 7 to 12 years. They wanted animals, so mom started in Bird Hall, of course. She also did a ton of mammals on the second floor, both North American and African. Then she took the kids out on the balcony to see the giant pterosaur, Quetzlcoatlus, with its 40 foot wing span. There was a reason, though. When that guy stood on the ground he was as tall as a giraffe! They had just seen the giraffe, so mom wanted to show off the pterosaur. It was a good move, because the museum had moved the herps to that balcony! So while they were out there, mom did frogs, salamanders, and snakes, too.
We are hoping for better weather tomorrow, even though mom won't have a chance at going to the pool. Her eye surgeon's appointment is in the afternoon.
I hope you are seeing warm weather, sunshine, and lots of cuddles, just for you! Hugs, Willie

  Hi Hulk
Today is hot again, although maybe not as bad as Monday. They are calling for a high of low 90s. I got outside for my sunbath at 9:15 (yes, I was playing hard to get again), but it was OK. Mom had to sit in the shade, but then that is probably just as well. The sun is not nearly as good for humans as it is for us birdies. When we came in Mom took me into the kitchen for some blueberry pie. She likes the berries and I like the crust, so we share.

Being Wednesday, Mom will leave me for the gym from 4-6, but since she feels so guilty when she gets home I don't mind. I get her right up to bedtime at 8:30. Besides the zumba teacher on Wednesday is really energetic, plus she has no breaks between songs. Mom's trainer takes it easy on her on Wednesdays, but Mom still comes home whacked out. Luckily she is still strong enough to support me on her shoulder, but then I only weigh 70 gms.

It is hard to get caught up on the Milonga blogs if have to step away for a lil while. Still, fun to attend and join in even if blogging is sporadic. Great to see so many different birds fly in even if only briefly.

Think most business have to call out since the phones can call each other internally. The dialing with the area codes is fairly recent.

Yeah, over sharing, gloating and the like on FB just isn't worth it if it involves work related things.

Yeah, grapes are just lousy right now. Mom tried the other grocery store near us and they were no better there. Small and sour~! Ick!

Hey, is anybirdy else missing their avatar and the ones in their aviary? I got nothing! Very annoying!

Well! My mom made a deep dish blueberry pie this morning before she went to the gym. What's the problem, you ask? The morning is MY time! Yes, she did take me out for my sunbath before she made the pie, and yes she did sit in my room with me while it was baking. Just because it is too hot in the afternoons to turn on the oven, I had to give up at least 30 minutes of MY mommy time while she put that pie together. And I only like the crust. She could have just baked a crust for me in much less time than that!

At least after she got home from the gym (and showered), she spent the next hour with me. However I was still mad at her from this morning, so I just ignored her. She sat and read, and I played with my toys. To be honest I was glad she was in there, but I would never let her know. Even if she did fix one of my favorite toys and reattach the bell. I do love those bells.

  Hi Hulk
Hello to all my dear BC friends, Zeena here with today's BOTM POST. Today we will take a look in brief at a touchy subject that has people lined up on both sides of the debate. It involves the breeders verses conservationists. I am not sharing this to side with either group, but as a general interest topic. These are exerts from an interview with Tony Silva a world renowned expert on Aviculture.
Interviewer; In light of all the talk about breeders, verses the conservationist groups, how can we make our legislators, the animal rights radicals, and the conservation elitists, understand that what we as private aviculturists do, is valuable and should be encouraged, not strangled with laws and regulations which in the end, will result in extinction, not preservation, of exotic birds?

Tony Silva: "We need an active, strong avicultural industry. Breeders must be allowed to breed for the pet industry, unimpeded by regulations and laws that simply do not work for us or the birds. The birds we raise for the pet industry supports the work we do with endangered species. And we have to do this, because third world countries don't care about what happens to their birds, they simply don't care. We have to look at individual species like the Spix. If it weren't for private aviculture, there would be no Spix Macaws. And the Brazilian government recognizes this! They say, 'Look, we don't care if we ever reintroduce Spix Macaws. We're just happy that authorities say we'll still have the species around, even if it's not in the jungle. '
Interviewer; Has the establishment of the CITES treaty curbed the explotation of wild Parrots

Tony Silva: I never would have thought imports would stop, because to these countries, birds are a renewable resource. In Southern Argentina a number of years ago, they were packaging up Patagonian Conures in cans and selling them to the Japanese as delicacies because nobody wanted to buy them as pets or to breed.

Look at the Tucuman Amazon. It is so rare they are difficult to locate in their habitat or aviculture. Officials in their range gave permits to shoot them because they were raiding the cornfields . Then there's the Scarlet Macaw in Surinam. It is on CITES Appendix I, but it is perfectly legal to bag up to 3 a day. The natives use them for food. Trade in birds' countries of origin will go on because these people have to survive. There is such a lack of education -- and you're going to tell them not to shoot this or that bird, or to protect this tree! And people won't believe this unless they see it. It's like the Hyacinth Macaw study. The researchers have a few lunches with bird trappers and gives their opinions as first-hand knowledge. But it's not accurate. Without captive breeding many species of Parrots the world over will cease to be in the next ten years. We need breeders to guarantee there will be any Parrots left in the end.

We woke up to a beautiful day here, bright sunshine and the temperature was 77 degrees.Mom is waiting to finish her chores so she can take us all outside to get a soaking shower and to dry off in the sun,we may be able to join her for dinner too with dad today! It seemed we had the same weather, the sun came out here really nice late yesterday afternoon around 4:30pm and by the time mom got us all out on the deck it was gone and the wind started to kick up and it took me(I was on the deck table in my deck cage)for a walk across the deck,my dad had to hang on tight til the wind stopped and then he took the umbrella off!Mom is on the run again tomorrow and she's got to get wild bird seed they ate her out of house and home again,Dad filled the deck feeder with thistle seed but they're not to happy about that!
Wishing you a greyt day and I'm sending you all my love along with warm birdie hugs and soft beakie kisses,Loving you always and forever,Kallie

Come visit me, Gabbie, Kallie, Peepers & Dixie.

  Hi Hulk
Mom agrees! She says she always puts the food in for the skunks, then when they are busy eating, she can clean the rest of the cage. The good thing is that they're outside, so she can use the hose instead of the spray bottle to clean with.
It's cool here today, don't expect the temps to go much above 70. If that's the case, mom will probably scrub the porch railings, since she finally found the Simple Green she was looking for. It's a good cleaner for the outdoor stuff. Of course, if it gets warmer, that plan will die in favor of the pool. It's open for such a limited time, mom likes to take advantage of every day she can go. Labor day is coming too soon! Nothing much else going on; Mom has a tour coming up tomorrow at the museum, and Thursday is the big eye appointment. Gene will be going back to Germany on Saturday, so she'll probably go visit him on Friday. Other than that, the week is a slow one, but we're never bored, and neither is mom. Hope you are having a great day and getting lots of sunshine and scritches. Hugs, Willie

  Hi, Hulk
We are always sidetracked during Milongas. That's why we rarely 'talk' directly to anybirdie, but are there keeping up with the activities, mainly eating, heehee.

If we call our next door neighbor we have to dial the 1 and the area code and the number! Yikes! At work mom has to dial the 1, the number to call out, the area code and the number. Thought it was everywhere, but could be just CA doing that. It isn't charged as long distance within the same area code but still a pain if need to dial all the numbers.

Those who post all that private type info on FB must really need attention. Know our mom would never share such things. Have heard of more than one story where someone got into trouble at school or work for stuff they posted.

Any humidity we had was very lil. Yesterday was slightly cooler daytime and by evening was going down quickly. Hopefully means todays temps will be lower than 90.

Have a great day, wing hugs and a vote, Pearl and Silver.

Come visit me, Pearl & Silver.

  Hi Hulk
The squawk-a-tiel just ate my blog to you :(
I got an email from Squeaks tonight. They still can't get anything on the net except for emails. Too many people there using it (thru August) for their vacation.
But, I know she would love to see you by her pool wearing your speedo.
You were lucky that you didn't get the nasty nasty LOUD t-storms with lightning and tornado watches. It was scary for hours!!!!!
Today was a bad asthma day for mom. I took real good care of her. Outside it was dark and cold (60's) ... it looked like November! This is wrong ... summer is suppose to be warm and sunny. Where is my summer?
Hugs
Chyna

YEP ... another winter like the last one with an early fall ...oh goodie :(

Come visit me, Chyna & Bailey ♥ RIP.

  Hi Hulk
we don't know what we will do about Boo Boos nest. its a coconut shell that dad wired into a tiny easter basket. then mom fills the nest with alfalfa. the handle of the basket attaches to the top of the cage and Boo Boo swings in her basket when she jumps in it. she always sits in her basket every morning and makes baby sounds for dad who then gives her some canned dog food rolled up into a meatball. since she doesn't have the nest now she didn't make the baby sounds. she only makes them for dad. the bottom of her cage is lined with thick foam so she doesn't \hurt herself when she jumps down. every toy in her cage is a worry because of her bad leg and foot. she can't control it very much and it gets caught on things.

my leg still hurts but at least i am using it.

i think i must have slept through the months of July and August because with this cool weather it sure feels and looks like fall.today continued with rain and wind with a high of 62 and tonight its 51 brrrrr.

love Boo Boo

  Heya, Hulk!
What is this I hear? A winter like the last one? Say it is not so! That was just the most awful one ever.

Mom's meeting at the other campus went well. She got up really early--and then she expected me to be up, too. HA! I was happily sleeping when she uncovered me. Did I give her a dirty look too! I gave her a little grief when she came to take me over to the playgym. Of course, I was sweet after that. But hey, that was super early this morning! Was glad when she got home, and I could velcro myself to her.

Chilly day here, but sunny. Mom says it is good sleeping weather. And I know I will be ready for it whenever she is!

Kaji

  Hi Hulk
Hi everybirdie, Zeena here with Monday's BOTM POST. Today we visit a beautiful song bird making a new comeback in homes around the globe. The Pekin Rokin, a song bird of extraordinary talent. I wish to thank all my many friends for their votes and stopping to leave comments on my page. I read them all.
The Red-billed Leiothrix or PEKIN ROBIN (Leiothrix lutea) is usually found in India, Bhutan, Nepal, Burma and parts of Tibet. This species is a bird of the hill forests, found in every type of jungle though it prefers pine forests with bushes. It has also been found at elevations ranging from near sea level to about 7,500 feet.

The species was introduced to the Hawaiian Islands in 1918 and spread to all the forested islands except Lanai. Its population on Oahu crashed in the 1960s and it disappeared from Kauai, but is now common and increasing on Oahu The leiothrix was released in Western Australia but it failed to become established. This species was also introduced in Great Britain but permanent establishment was unsuccessful. It was introduced to France, where it is now established in several areas.
Adults have bright red bills and a dull yellow ring around their eyes. Their backs are dull olive green, and they have a bright yellow-orange throat with a yellow chin; females are somewhat duller than males, and juveniles have black bills. It has also been introduced in various parts of the world, with small populations of escapees having existed in Japan since the 1980s. It has become a common cagebird and amongst aviculturists it goes by various names: Pekin Robin, Pekin Nightingale, Japanese Nightingale, and Japanese (Hill) Robin, the last two being misnomers as it is not native to Japan.
Pekin Robins don't fly frequently, except in open habitats. This bird is very active and an excellent singer but very secretive and difficult to see. It makes a wonderful addition to a mixed aviary with good cover provided. Housing one pair per flight.
The standard fare for Pekin Robins in captivity comprises a mix of dried insect food, fresh fruits and mealworms. they especially like fruitflies and live crickets especially in the breeding season.
Pekin Robins are difficult to find for sale but well worth the expenditure and effort to find them.
with love and scritches Zeena 255116
