A woman, being a past acquaintance of the breeder I was working for, had called one day looking to see if the breeder knew of anyone who might be interested in adopting a special needs african grey baby. The breeder handed the phone to me, since she knew how much I love african greys (they are my favorite parrot). After listening to this woman describe the baby grey and the problems it seemed to have with its legs, I knew in my heart of hearts that I needed to adopt her. Arrangements for pickup were a bit difficult, as she was in Texas and I was in Georgia. However, another bird friend of mine was travelling with her husband to Texas on vacation at the same time!! It was so coincidental and everything lined up perfectly - I was to bird sit and care for her baby cockatiels while they travelled to Texas, and she and her husband would pick up the grey baby on their way back from Texas! I can never thank them enough for picking Tater up and bringing her home to us. Nor could I ever thank the wonderful woman enough, who gave us the opportunity to adopt such a beautiful friend and companion that we have with Tater.
She's adapted well to the specialness with her legs and gets around quite well. She's a total blabber-beak and I love hearing her mimic! She's gentle, loving and comical too. We love our little Texas tater-tot! :)

Oh, some want to know what's wrong with my legs - well, avian vets and a few breeders looked at my legs and think that my momma or daddy might have sat on me too hard when I was newly hatched in the nestbox, which from their weight of trying to protect me, both my legs were broken and the breeder didn't realize it right away 'cause I was so tiny so, they healed funny. My adoptive parents looked into getting surgery done on my legs to help fix them but, that can be too risky and I'm doing just fine with my legs right now - I get around pretty good! I kinda wobble around to where I need to go but, I can sorta climb too even though my toes barely grasp. I've adapted well to my specialness. :-)

Hi! My name is Tater

I am an African Grey from Franklin, GA.

Tay-tay, Tate-Tate, Tater-tot, Texas Tater, Texas Tater-tot

13 years old   F

African Grey

apples, grapes, nuts

Anywhere near my humans - usually, on a playgym or ontop of my cage - on the couch or in my humans arms, snuggled under her hands, under a blanket all nice and comfy-warm.

Not sure I have any pet peeves yet - if I think of any, I'll let you know. ;)

They spoil me rotten! They love me unconditionally- . I get new toys often, lots of attention, good food and many other fids for company too.

Because of my special legs, my first momma that raised me from a chick to 7 weeks of age, used to rub my feet and legs while I was laying on my back. So, with my forever mom, I still enjoy rolling over onto my back and having my feet and legs massaged, my head scritched too! But, sometimes, I don't know any better and just roll over wherever I may be at the time and almost fall off of where I am. Mom tells me I need to be more careful so that I won't fall and get hurt. I need to let her know before rolling over. ;).

Never feel that you can't - given time, many obstacles are overcome..

Hey Tater, On Eyed Jack here.
Sounds like we both got messed up by our parents, in the shell or fate. Any who, glad to hear another success story. There are so many good people in the world, and we were lucky enough to have ours come by at the right time. Kismet? Your pitures sure shows your personality. Is the gym homemade? Sure looks cool and stripable. Just be sure you don't weeble wooble off of it. Come visit me and my freinds if ya have the time. Jack.

Tweety needs your votes for her poem. Her foot had to be amputated Feb. 26th due to the main blood supply being cut in her leg. We had to separate her from her cage mate. I wanted to get her a big cage to move (fly around) in and after paying 258.00 for her leg to become amputated we could not afford to buy her the cage of her dreams. We notice that she flies a little to get around her cage and can defiantly use a bigger one. Thank you; please visit her web site at

Come visit me, Tweety, Frosty and Ringo.

  Hey tate- tate
I think you are wonderful one of a kind sweet biirdie! I gave you a vote, you go girl! haha. I once adopted a african grey from a lady who decided to travel the world and could not leave the bird alone. He was so fun hearing him make everyones voice. But my mother sold him to a breeder without telling me because he was to loud. I cried for 2 months because I missed him. I called the lady shortly after and in about a year I heard that he found a wife and they are a happy couple. It ended all well :) Your just a beautiful bird. Birdie kisses!!!

Come visit me, Pudgie & Treasure.

Here’s a vote for you and a birdie poem:

I love birds, I love them so,
Life without them I’ll never know.
Each day starts with a meeting,
Chirps and whistles it’s their own special greeting.
Fresh fruits and veggies to wash and chop,
Served with warm birdie bread to fill each crop.
Toys of wood, leather and bells,
Makes for fun with loud squawking yells.
Feathers and pellets all over my floor,
Does not deter me from loving them more.
As the sun fades we share kisses and scritches,
Then it’s off to each cage with sweet dream wishes.

If you enjoyed that, please stop by the Bird Contest section on this website and give us your vote in the poetry contest – we are on page 4! Mom would like to add another member to our flock and by winning a new cage, this would encourage Daddy to let her do so!

Come visit me, Riley, Tinkerbell, Tiki & Sayde Rose.
