  Hello Miss Ronnie~
I hope you are having a great day! Absolutely nothing of interest going on in my world but I did want to come by and say hello!
We have been doing more spring cleaning this week and it's really not very exciting at all!! Mom scrubbed the sliding glass door and the screen! It's so bright and pretty and I have an excellent view of the flags out in front of the complex! It's always windy around here so they are always flapping! They have red tulips on the flags and I enjoy watching them wave in the wind!
I hope you are enjoying your day and that window cleaning is not the most exciting thing going on in your life! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

That is so funny about your mom saying she could make another bird with all the feathers! Mom says that when she brushes the dog! It's true too because that pile of fur is really huge!
It was a bit cooler this morning so mom decided chili would be good! Well, you know what goes with chili??
Corn bread!!!!! I just finished stuffing my beak and I know there is another slice put away just for me! Oh I do love that stuff!
Enjoy the day sweetie!!

  Hello Miss Ronnie~
I hope you are having a great day! It's very pretty here! A real spring day!
Mom was off last night and she'll be off again on Friday. She couldn't get two days off in a row this week because there is too much work. It's clearance week plus they added a special weekend ad. The store is having it's Fuschia event this weekend so there will be special sales to go along with it. It's an annual event and everyone looks forward to it. They have geranium and fuschia starts for sale and if you bring your own pot the garden staff will plant them for you. Hanging baskets are a big thing up here so by next week you will be seeing them everywhere.
I have spent the morning trying to keep Merlin away from mom! He had his outside on the balcony time and play with the ribbon time but he is trying to butt into my climb on mom time! I told him he needs to go grab a nap until I'm ready for my apple and then he can jump up on the computer desk again!
Enjoy the day and I do hope it's a spectacular day!

Boo Boo announces before Coris speech that they woke up to a dusting of snow this morning and then she wishes all the birds a lovely day.
Many of the birds inhabiting the south american rainforest depend on old growth forests for their winter stay before migrating north in the spring. the deforestation and destruction of the rain forests are wrecking havoc on migratory birds. while in the north migratory birds might live entirely on insects upon arrival of the old growth forests they will depend entirely on fruits to sustain them. logging for timber by cutting down old growth tress plus the fragmentation of the forests by the oil and gas companies by drilling and fracking are causing an alarming decrease in bird populations. this hasn't even covered the topic of all the toxic spills that have occurred polluting fresh drinking sources and polluting the air. I’m sorry to say the latest news from Galveston Texas is not good.
The slick caused by the recent toxic spill in the Gulf of Mexico is drifting toward Chester’s Island, a critical bird habitat in Matagorda Bay. The island hosts tens of thousands of breeding waterbirds each year. This crisis is far from over.
thats why i would like to talk today about trees and their importance.
THE VALUE AMOUNT OF A TREE IS $193,250. according to Professor T.M.Dass of the university of Calcutta. One tree living 50 years will generate $31,250 worth of oxygen, provide $62,000 worth of air pollution control, control soil erosion and increase soil fertility to the tune of $31,250 recycle $37,500 worth of water and provide a home for animals worth $31,250. this of course does not include the value of the fruits or beauty derived from trees.

  HI MISS RONNIE
Ravens have inspired a large body of folklore and legend which is not entirely negative. i would like to concentrate on the more positive tales . for a good laugh you can google the Raven saying Never More Never more WHACKA WHACKA WHACKA on u-tube.

the vikings worshipped and revered ravens and its image was carried on all their banners and shields. since ravens had the power of human speech they were thought to fly all over the world everyday returning at night to tell of what they had seen and heard. the irish phrase"ravens knowledge" applies to anyone who appears to see and know all. in europe the raven was considered a mystical and magical bird. Alexander the Great was said to have been guided across the desert by two ravens sent from heaven. in Briton legend maintains that England will not fall as long as Ravens remain in the tower of London.

the raven was connected with the creation of the world by american indians who made people out of a rock and a leaf. the raven showed the leaf to the people and said "see this leaf" you are to be like it. when the leaf falls from the branch and rots there is nothing left. thus the raven also brought death to the world. one indian tribe believed he raven was a mythical ancestor of their tribe and performed many wonderful deeds at the beginning of the world. one such deed was determining the particular task a bird should perform, where they should live and what their color should be. for instance the American Robin was was to give pleasure to man through its beauty. all birds were told to dress differently so they could recognize each other. the Blue-Jay was told to pie its hair high and tie it with a string. the magical Raven could transform itself into whatever shape it chose and remove its feathers like a coat. as a spirit of creation he had not beginning or no end.

Cori decides to do something a little different today and tells Boo Boo to take a seat with the rest of the bird audience because today she is talking about Blue Jays. Boo Boo clapped her wings with glee upon hearing this and listens intently to Cori.

noisy and fearless and found throughout the eastern united states and canada but also extending westward and sometimes spotted in western states. there are a few legends that blue jays have acquired over the years. southerners say Blue Jays were yoked to a plow by a sparrow and the mark left by the ole can still be seen on the blue jays breast.
the Cherokee indianas suggest that if find a blue jay feather, soak it in water and then gently brush a childs eye with it, the child will become an wary riser. this will not work if the feather is taken from the bird, it must be found on the ground.
indians from the hudson bay area believe the Canadian jay crowed out a warning whenever the tried to sneak up on a Eskimo camp and for this reason the indians often killed the Canada Jay
because Blue Jays do not always retrieve all of the acorns and other seeds they bury in the fall, they are friends to the forest by "planting" new seeds.
around the time automobiles became common, a Jaywalker meant a rustic bumpkin who didn't look where he was going and a "Jay" often referred to a silly person perhaps because they were considered vain about their gaudy plumage.

the 300 species of Hummingbirds feed mainly on red tubular flowers with a long beak with an even longer tongue that laps up the nectar. they also eat small insects that live near the flowers like spiders ,beetles, ants aphids and gnats. these small flying gems are anything but cowardly, unafraid of humans and battle furiously among themselves defending their territory.observing this, aztec warriors believed they would be reincarnated as hummingbirds upon death in battle. they also believed the hummingbird was one of the original creators of the universe.
in one mayan legend the great god was busy making different kinds of birds for the world. when he was finished he found a tiny pile of scraps left over and not wanting to waste anything decided to make the tiniest bird of all. after making a pair of hummingbirds he called all the birds together to celebrate. many birds brought gifts. the house finch gave red feathers for the male to make a scarf, which the male then gave 1 or 2 of these feathers to the female. the sun gave a present also and shone down on the couple making their feathers gleam and sparkle like gold and jewels. since that time hummingbirds feathers glow with an iridescence in the sun.
indians of the american south west considered hummingbirds to be bringers of rain. it was felt the little hummer had a direct connection to the god of rain and would bring much needed water to this region. water jars were decorated with paintings of hummers. Hopi and Zuni tribes include the hummingbird in their ceremonial rain dances

Boo Boo does the HAPPY HUMPDAY dance before Coris speech:
the Ruby-Throated Hummingbird is the only hummingbird that breeds in the northeastern united states. one early naturalist felt the birds rapidly beating wings sounded like a bumble bee and named it the Humbird. the Ruby-Throated migrates from South America to southern canada flying non-stop , 500 miles, across the Gulf of Mexico.in the western united states the Rufous Hummingbird ranges farther north than any other hummingbird going as far as southern Alaska. the Annas Hummingbird resides in California wandering sometimes into Arizona and along the Rockies north into Canada . a popular myth was that the Hummingbirds must be hitchhiking a ride on larger birds to be able to travel such long distances.

hummingbirds have almost the highest metabolism of any warm blooded mammal and feed almost continuously often becoming torpid at night to preserve their energy. the female laying on her eggs doesn't have the luxury of lowering her metabolism at night since she must keep her 2 eggs warm. the intricately woven nest made up of spider web silk seems to protect her and her eggs from the cold.
in one Mayan legend birds who asked a tribal wiseman how to build a sturdy nest were sent to the hummingbirds for instructions.

Boo Boo makes Cori gargle with cepacol before her speech today and then makes her spit it out into a little brass spittoon.

A Hummingbird rarely makes any sound other than the faint :hum of its beating wings and will make a high pitched chirping sound when angry. the reason a legend says is greed. the Hummingbirds extensible tongue allows it to reach deep into a flower to obtain nectar. according to legend the Hummingbird swallowed too much nectar at one time and lost its voice in the flower. that is why the Hummingbird dashes from bloom to bloom so swiftly- it is searching for its lost voice. another legend states that the Hummingbird hibernates instead of migrating. written in a old book of folklore "Hummingbirds live by the dew and juice of flowers. they die or sleep every year in the month of october, sitting upon a a little bough, in a warm and close place. the wake in the middle of april, after the flowers be sprung and therefore call themselves the revived birds.

perhaps one day the Hummingbird will find its lots voice in a flower and the sound will be lovely to hear.

  HI MISS RONNIE
Boo Boo stands in front of the audience on this monday and gives a small introduction before Cori's campaign speech. since everybody is anxiously waiting for spring we thought we would end our campaign week talking about Hummingbirds, for when they return to the colder regions spring must be here even if it doesn't feel like it.

When the pilgrims stepped ashore in Massachusetts in 1620 the indian chiefs who greeted them wore strange, small glittering ornaments in their ears-they were stuffed hummingbirds. Cortez, the spanish conquistador was astonished when he met Montezuma in Mexico, to see that the Aztec emperor and nobles of the court were arrayed in long coats that shone brilliantly when the sun struck them. when such a cloak was presented to Cortez, he was amazed to find it made entirely of hundreds of hummingbird skins.

hummingbirds, the smallest of all birds(the Bee Hummingbird from Cuba is the size of a bumblebee) have almost been completely obliterated from the earth several times. somehow they managed to survive. in the 19th century it was fashionable to decorate ladies hats with them and millions were killed for it. in 1860 more than 500,000 hummingbird skins were auctioned in london. eventually laws were passed in the united states and london making it illegal to trade in hummingbird skins plus fashions changed so hummingbirds slowly made a recovery considering they only lay 2 small pearl sized eggs a year and are the prey of larger birds and squirrels. the destruction of their forests where they make their nests and pesticides are are now increasingly taking their toll on the tiny "jewels of the sky"

found mostly in the old world, the Kingfisher is a bright jewel of a bird who skims over the water in a flash of blue and orange, dicing for small fish, crayfish, frogs and insects.its eyes have oval lenses enabling it to see well in the air as well as underwater. wearing the Kingfishers feathers was believed to heighten the wearers beauty.in britton it was believed the bird could glow in the dark. it was believed that the Kingfisher was originally a dull colored bird but Noah releases the Kingfisher from his arc in order to find land. after being confined for so long the bird flew up to the sky until it took on the blue color of the heavens. then it flew so close to the sun its breast was scorched so it was forced to dive into the water below . at this point it remembered it was suppose to find land and went in search of the ark but could no longer find it since Noah had long since landed on Mt Arafat. this is why the Kingfisher continues to this day flying along rivers calling out to Noah. it was also believed that upon death the birds did not decay so their bodies were placed among clothes to preserve them. whoever owned dead Kingfisher would be granted grace and loveliness by wearing its feathers. plucking feathers from a Kingfisher and throwing them in water, then retrieving only the feathers that floated and stroking a loved one with them was considered a powerful love talismans. dead Kingfishers hung up by their beaks with a thread foretold the direction the wind would blow by which direction their breast faced.

today i would like to talk about the BIRD MAN OF ALCATRAZ. in 1963, Robert F Stroud, murderer of two men died after spending 54 years in solitary confinement. no man in the history of the world ever spent more time alone. were it not for his deep intelligence and love for birds, Stroud would have converted to a human vegetable, but instead became one of the worlds greatest bird pathologists. in an article in the respected Scientific American, the author states that Stroud learned more about bird diseases than any other amateur investigator. a book THE BIRDMAN OF ALCATREZ and a movie of the same name starring Burt Lncaster, made stroud's genius for curing sick birds world renowned. of course it did not gain freedom for Stroud. one of the men he killed happened to be a prison guard. Strouds book was first published in 1943 and the only major change in the treatment of birds since then has been the introduction of antibiotics such as Terramycin, aureomycin and others in the treatment of bird diseases. antibiotics require a doctors prescription and Strouds treatments do not as they are more of a homeopathic treatment but would require a compounding pharmacist to make them up since some of the ingredients might be hard to obtain today. treating a birds disease is in recognizing what the disease is and what caused it. there is still no other book in the world, in any language which can help laymen more in treating bird diseases than the book Strouds digest on the disease of birds.

The dove has always been a symbol of peace and love since earliest recorded times. the dove served as a symbol for aphridite as the symbol of love, being both affectionate (hence the term loveydovey) and sexually active. aphrodite was believed to have been hatched from a doves egg and brought ashore by fish. in syria the goddess astarte was saved from starvation in the desert by doves who fed her milk and cheese and turned her into a dove on her death. a dove was sent from the ark by Noah in christian religion to check on whether the flood waters were receding. when the dove returned with a sprig of olive branch in its beak Noah knew god had forgiven mankind. in christian religion the dove is the symbol of the holy ghost. in the middle east the dove is held as sacred when a ruler who was killed in battle hd 2 doves fly from his heart. it was also believed any bird of prey who killed a dove would drop dead. in japan doves were believed to be messengers of war rather than symbols of peace when he was saved from discovery while hiding in a tree by two doves that flew out and convinced the enemy the tree was hiding nope. in italy russia and germany it was considered sin to kill a dove. while in the channel islands it was considered unlucky to keep pet doves which would cause a difficult marriage

Named for the striking yellow tufts that grow above its eyes during breeding season, the tufted puffin is one of the most loved birds in North America. The tufted puffin’s striking breeding season coloration has earned it such names as “sea parrot” and “clown of the sea.” With its short wings that allow it to swim expertly underwater, the tufted puffin dives for prey along coasts of California, Oregon, and Washington where populations of this seabird, as well as in Japan, are in trouble, as lack of prey, climate change, fishing, oil spills, and other dangers take their toll. Tufted puffins are able to dive up to 60 meters to catch small fish like sardines, herring, and anchovy and may make as many as 360 dives per day when foraging to feed their chicks. Breeding populations of tufted puffins in California, Oregon, and Washington have declined by 85 to 90 percent in the last three decades, from more than 30,000 birds to no more than 4000 today. Most of these remaining puffins are in Washington. Oregon and California are each estimated to have breeding populations of less than 300 birds. The population in Japan is down to ten breeding pairs. Tufted puffins are still numerous in Alaska and British Columbia. But the more southern populations that are in steep decline encompass a significant portion of the species’ historic range and contain genetic diversity that is important to maintain if the species is to persist in the long-term, particularly with impacts from climate change escalating. humans are the cause of the tufted puffin’s plight. Climate change, driven by our burning of fossil fuels, is altering temperatures and circulation patterns of our oceans, disrupting the food web and making it harder for puffins to forage and to successfully reproduce. Puffins are also caught as bycatch in commercial fishing nets, drowning underwater when they cannot surface for air.
Diving for food and roosting on the surface of the water makes the tufted puffin highly vulnerable to impacts from oil spills. A single oil spill can wipe out entire breeding colonies. In fact, in 1991, the Tenyo Maru oil spill off the coast of Washington killed about 10 percent of the state’s population of tufted puffins. Similarly, the Exxon Valdez spill was responsible for the death of up to 13,000 Alaskan tufted puffins in 1989.
To compound the problem, tufted puffins generally return to the same colony each year and even if any birds were tempted to stray, breeding colonies in the contiguous United States are physically separated from other breeding colonies to the north. This has made recovery very difficult as population numbers dwindle. In recent years,

Cori and Boo Boo both do a short HAPPY HUMPDAY dance before the presentation!

people have always been fascinated by the huge migrating flocks of Cranes. it was believed that Cranes carried small birds on their backs during their migratory travels over large bodies of water. it was believed the reason the Crances did this was that they enjoyed listening to the songs of the small birds.. this belief was held by the egyptians, the bedouins and the the Crow indians.the arawak indians pf venezuela believed tobacco was brought to them by a hummingbird who stole it from triniada and rode on the back of a crane to bring it to south america. it was believed that cranes swallowed stones to keep the wind from blowing them off course during their long migratory flights. upon arrival they would expel the stones. the stones were said to hold magical powers. if one held the stone they would find gold. also the stones were said to warn of impending danger.

The Whooping Crane is named for its call, which can be heard over great distances thanks to the bird’s extra-long trachea, which coils around its breastbone twice like a French horn. Like other cranes, the Whooper is noisy; the word “crane” comes from the Anglo-Saxon "cran," which means "to cry out."
The tallest flying bird in North America, Whooping Cranes measure up to five feet tall with a seven-to eight-foot wingspan. The species also has another distinction: It is the rarest crane in the world. Several decades ago, it almost disappeared forever due to habitat loss and hunting.
Still extremely rare, Whooping Cranes are on the WatchList and protected as an endangered species. Sadly, up to one-quarter of all Whoopers are shot and killed.
Whooping Cranes are one of our country’s most majestic birds—and also one of our most endangered. Though the species once ranged throughout the Great Plains and Gulf Coast regions, the Whooping Crane population was decimated by hunting and habitat loss, and only 16 birds remained in 1941.
Today, a major captive-breeding effort has helped the population rebound to nearly 600 individuals. But these birds are still under threat. A mated pair of Whooping Cranes was recently shot at a crawfish pond in Louisiana. Sadly, both have died from their injuries. Still worse, this is not unusual: Nearly one-quarter of all Whooping Crane deaths are caused by illegal shooting.
Whooping Cranes deserve the full protection of the law.

Boo Boo places an ice bag on Coris head before todays speech. they both had a little too much st paddys day celebrating yesterday.

a very common superstition was that storks deliver newborn babies. this superstition was found amend europeans and even the sioux indians. the great flocks of storks flying north from africa at the beginning os spring created an association in peoples minds with fertility. also the considerable size of the stork could easily carry a newborn human. it was also believed that the storks caring nature extended to its own parents as well and in ancient rome there was a law requiring citizens to care for their elders known as lex ciconia, or stork law. it was believed that storks lived to a ripe old age and in china, storks were believed to carry the human soul, particularly those of brave soldiers up to heaven. in greece if a woman befriended a stork it would one day return and lay a jewel at her feet in token of affection. storks were thought to be very strict with their own babies and would often peck them until they bled but then could miraculously heal them instantly with a lick of their tongue. this is why the reddish pink marks found on newborns eyelids is often referred to as stork bites. farmers in europe felt storks brought good luck and would place platforms on their roofs for storks to nest. if the storks left the farmers roof it was considered bad luck. the stork represent duty and gratitude.

Cori starts playing an irish tune on her fiddle as Boo Boo , wearing heavy boots, does some Irish step dancing before Cori begins her speech for today:

An irish saint, similar to /saint francis of assisi called /st Kevin(498-618) was said to prefer the company of animals over humans and was said to have a mystical command over them. once when he was praying during lent, a blackbird landed on his outstretched hand and laid an egg there. St Kevin then remained perfectly still until the egg had hatched- an illustration of the saints virtuous patience and gentleness.
there is a saying from the county meath in ireland "when the blackbird sings before christmas, she will cry before Candlemas" This meant if the blackbird started signing before its usual time of early to mid february a cold spell will occur before february 2, when the rite of candlemas is observed. in germany it was thought a blackbird kept caged in a house offered protection against lightning.

  HI MISS RONNIE
thankyou for helping me win the honor of BOTD!

Boo Boo tosses 4 leaf clovers out to the bird e club audience before Cori begins her speech.

What is “The Ideas of March?” The Romans called March 15th “The Ides of March.” Originally, the “ideas” referred to the full moon.Ides were days of settling debts

What does “Beware the Ides of March” mean? It means, be aware of impending danger.

The saying, “Beware the Ides of March” came from William Shakespeare’s play, Julius Caesar. In the play, a soothsayer says “Beware the Ideas of March” to Julius Caesar to warn him that this was to be his assassination day.

Julius Caesar was assassinated on March 15, 44BC by Roman Senators who were concerned that he had too much power. Rome was a Republic and these Roman Senators did not want anyone to disrupt what they had built. However, after Julius Caesar’s assassination, Rome was saddened by his death. The senators were banished and the republic was never restored to its previous glory.

“Beware the Ides of March” is now a proverb, superstition and a phrase that warns of impending danger and unfortunate events.

A proverb is a saying that contains advice or accepted truth. They are passed down through generations. Common proverbs are; “Look before you leap,” “don’t count your chickens before they hatch” and “don’t put all your eggs in one basket.”

A superstition is a belief that a particular thing, event or circumstance holds some kind of significance that something going to happen (bad or good) even though it’s not based on knowledge or reason. This belief can be based on fear, ignorance, trust in magic, coincidence, or a prior experience with a similar situation. Some common superstitions are; breaking a mirror can cause bad luck, finding a 4-leaf clover can bring good luck, stepping on a crack in the sidewalk can “break your mother’s back” or cause bad luck, the number 13 can bring you bad luck, and finding a string on your person means your going to get a letter.

  Hello Miss Ronnie~
I hope you are having a great day! Spring has sprung up here. We have had a bit of rain but the temps have been near 60 and the cotton wood trees are bright pink and the frogs are delivering me joyous noise every single night! Now normally I don't really like hearing those hundreds of frogs but since they are announcing spring, I will put up with them!
Mom went out to the market for a while and she is going to hit the library soon. New books for Sugar! YAY!!! We will get some dinner done and then I hope we can have more popcorn and watch another movie.
You enjoy your evening! I hope it's just perfect!

BooBoo does a short irish jig before Coris speech.
the irish peasants attached great importance to the first verse of St John gospel and maintain that when a cock crows in the morning he is repeating verse 1-14 and if we understood the language of animals and birds we would often hear them quoting the same verses.

a flight of rooks over an army foretells defeat, if over a house or people when driving or walking , death ail follow.

if a hen crows on the roost it is a sure sign that fairies have struck it and its head must be cut off and flung on the ground or one of the family will die before the year is out.

never disturb swallows where ever they may build and neither remove or destroy their nests for they are wise birds and will mark your conduct either with punishment or favor.

if you hear a cuckoo on the right you will have luck all the year after.

it is very lucky for a hen and her chickens to stray into your house

if anyone in the house is sick and a cock crows with his head to the fire recovery is expected. if he crows with his head to the door then death be certain.

in whatever quarter you are looking when you first hear the cockoo in the season, you will be traveling in that direction before the year is over.

if a cock comes to the threshold and crows you may expect visitors

the cuttings of your hair must never be thrown where birds can find them or they will use your head to build nests and you will have headaches all the year after.

BEWARE OF SPEAKING ILL OF FAIRIES ON FRIDAY OR THEY WILL WORK EVIL ON YOU IF OFFENDED.

HAPPY TGIF DAY

MORE IRISH FOLKLORE:
there is no irish name for the Magpie. it is generally called Francagh, a Frenchman, though no one really knows why. many odd tales are told of this bird, rising from its quaint ways of its cunning and habits of petty larceny. it is not considered evil, though to meet one alone in the morning when going on a journey is considered a evil omen, but to meet more than one magpie beacons good fortune according to this old rhyme:
ONE FOR SORROW
TWO FOR MIRTH
THREE FOR MARRIAGE
FOUR FOR BIRTH
FIVE FOR HEAVEN
SIX FOR HELL
SEVEN's THE DEVILS his own self
EIGHT FOR A WISH
NINE FOR A KISS
TEN FOR A SURPRISE you should be careful not to miss
ELEVEN FOR HEALTH
TWELVE FOR WEALTH
THIRTEEN BEWARE its the devil himself
another similar poem is:
ONE FOR SORROW
TWO FOR JOY
THREE FOR A GIRL
FOUR FOR A BOY
FIVE FOR SILVER
SIX FOR GOLD
SEVEN FOR A SECRET NEVER TO BE TOLD
seeing three Magpies on the left hand, when on a journey is unlucky, but two on the right hand is a good omen
in scotland it was believed that the bird held a drop of the devil under its tongue

A SINGLE MAGPIE IN SPRING FOUL WEATHER WILL BRING from the birds habit of feeding together only in fine weather.
if you see a solitary Magpie you can ward off bad luck by spitting over your shoulder three times doffing your hat and saying GOOD MORNING MR MAGPIE, HOW ARE YOU THIS FINE DAY or GOOD DAY, HOW IS YOUR WIFE? in hopes the Magpies mate is hiding nearby to turn your sorrow into joy.

  Hi Miss Ronnie
an astonishing large and varied belief of folklore has grown up around birds on one hand man feels a strong connection to birds because they build nests in his garden or on the eaves of his home. on the other hand their freedom of flight to parts unknown has always fascinated man. migration was not fully understood before the 18th century.odd tales arose from these migrations which i have previously mentioned a few of. since St Paddys day is around the corner we thought for the next few days we would talk about irish folklore involving birds.
the Cuckoo was thought to turn into a Hawk before departing for its winter destinations. it is very unlucky to kill a Cockoo or break its eggs because a Cuckoo brings with it fine weather. the first time you hear a Cuckoo look down at your feet. if a hair is laying there you will live to comb your grey locks at an old age. a poem also accompanies the Cuckoo:
if a cuckoo sits on a bare throne
you may del your cow and buy corn
but if she sits on a green bough you may sell your corn and buy a cow.

it is most unlucky to kill a Robin Redbreast. the Robin is Gods own bird, sacred and holy and held in the highest esteem. it is believed the Robin plucked out a thorn piercing Christs brow on the cross and in so doing his breast was covered and dyed red in his blood.the Robin has since remained a sacred and blessed sign to preserve it from harm and make it beloved of all men.

  Hi Miss Ronnie
You think your morning commute’s a beast? Try traversing the continent twice a year ... under your own steam.

Billions of birds do just that, migrating between warm winter climes and breeding grounds, often in the far North. And thanks to a growing human footprint, migratory birds face unprecedented threats with every journey.

At least 40 percent of all bird species are migratory. In North America more than 300 bird species migrate. Here are just a few amazing facts about the planet's migratory marvels:

High flyers — Bar-headed geese routinely traverse the Indian Himalayas, reaching altitudes of nearly 30,000 feet.
Far flyers — Arctic Terns are the globetrotting champs. Their annual round-trip transit amounts to nearly 50,000 miles per year.
Fast flyers — Great Snipes routinely maintain speeds of 60 mph or more on their 4200-mile migrations. And that’s without tailwinds.
Tireless flyers — the Bar-tailed Godwit exhibits world spanning feats of non-stop flight, able to cover 7,000 miles across the central Pacific without food or rest.
Fat flyers — feats of migration take a lot of calories, and birds often gorge themselves in preparation for the journey. Blackpoll Warblers, for instance, nearly double their body weight before embarking on their nonstop 2300-mile trip.
Navigating a Gauntlet of Death

Migrating birds face a host of natural dangers. Many die along the way. And ever-greater numbers are succumbing to unnatural dangers as well — habitat loss, tall buildings, pollution and climate change. For instance, in this country alone, window strikes are estimated to kill upwards of a billion birds every year.

“Earth provides enough to satisfy every man's needs, but not every man's greed.”

  HI MISS RONNIE
A FEW RANDOM BUT INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT BIRDS:
1)THE SEXIEST PARROTS HAVE FLOURESCENT FEATHERS. BOTH MALES AND FEMALES ARE ATTRACTED TO THOSE THAT HAVE THE BRIGHTLY COLORED PLUMAGE, WHICH GLOWS BY ABSORBING ULTRA VIOLET LIGHT. HUMANS CANT SEE IT BUT THE PARROTS SURE DO.
MALE BLUE-TITS THAT HAVE RANDOM YELLOW FEATHERS ON THEIR BREAST TEND TO BE BETTR PROVIDERS FOR THEIR CHICKS SO FEMALES CHOOSE THEM ABOVE OTHER MALES
SISKINS THAT HAVE A LARGER BLACK PATCH ON THEIR CHEST SIGNAL STATUS WITHIN THE COMMUNITY AND ALSO SHOW THEY ARE HUNGRIER THAN OTHER SISKINS SO MORE FOOD IS SHARED WITH THEM.
2)THE KEA A DISTANT RELATIVE OF THE PARROT HAS A RUBBER FETISH AND WILL EAT THE WINSHIELD WIPERS ON CARS AND HANG ONTO THE WIPERS EVEN IF THE CAR IS MOVING WHILE THEY CHOMP AWAY.
3)HUMMINGBIRDS CONSUME THEIR ENTIRE BODY WEIGHT A DAY TO PROVIDE FOR THEIR HIGH ENERGY LEVELS
4)THE HOATZIN, A VENEZUELAN BIRD, HAS A STOMACH SIMILIAR TO A COW. ITS FOOD FERMENTS INSIDE IT PRODUCING A AROMA MUCH LIKE COW DUNG. HENCE THE NICKNAME STINKBIRD.
5)PENGUINS ARE NATURES SUPER-POOPERS: CHINSTRAP AND ADELIE PENGUINS POINT THEIR REAR ENDS OUT OF THEIR NEST AND FIRE THEIR POO INTO THE AIR WITH SUCH FORCE IT LANDS 16 INCHES AWAY
6)VULTURES FEELING THREATENED WILL VOMIT VIOLENTLY IN THE DIRECTIONS OF THEIR ATTACKERS. THIS IS DONE OUT OF FEAR AND FOR SURVIVAL BECAUSE BY LOSING PART OF THEIR BODY WEIGHT THEY WILL BE ABLE TO TAKE TO THE AIR AND ESCAPE MUCH MORE QUICKLY. THE VOMIT ITSWLF IS SO FOUL WILL ALSO DISTRACT THE PREDATOR AND POSSIBLY KILL THEM
7)BIRDS CAN GET DRUNK
IN 2005 A LARGE FLOCK OF CEDAR WAXWINGS FLEW INTO THE GLASS WINDOWS OF A BUILDING. THE 100'S OF WAXWINGS WERE INTOXICATED ON HOLLY BERRIES. THE SEYCHELLES BLUE PIGEON FEEDS ON FERMENTED INDIAN ALMONDS AND BECOME SO INEBRIATED THEY CANT FLY FOR HOURS AFTERWARDS.

BOTH CORI AND BOO BOO THANK ALL THE BIRDS FOR THEIR CONTINUED SUPPORT FOR CORIS BOTM CAMPAIGN.
BIRDS WILL BAND TOGETHER TO SING TRIUMPHANT SONGS WHEN THEY HAVE WON A TERRITORIAL BATTLE. THE BOUBOU WILL WILL PERFORM DISTINCTIVE DUETS TO SIGNAL THEIR VICTORIES.. THIS ALERTS OTHER BOUBOUS THAT THE COAST IS NOW CLEAR AND ALSO WARNS OFF OTHER POTENTIAL INVADERS.
SCIENTISTS HAVE FOUND THAT BIRDS WITH A LARGE .SONG REPERTOIRE ALSO HAVE LARGER SPLEENS, WHICH IN TURN IS LINKED TO THE QUALITY OF THE BIRDS IMMUNE SYSTEM. FEMALE BIRDS LIKE THE GREAT REED WARBLER MATING WITH THE MALES WITH THE BIGGEST SONG BOOK HAVE OFF SPRING THAT TEND TO SURVIVE LONGER
MALE CANARAIES CAN DRIVE FEMALES WILD WITH THEIR SPECTACULAR RAPID FIRE TRILLING VIBRATING NOTES 16 TIMES PER SECOND. FEMALES HEARING THIS IMMEDIATELY ADOPT THE POSTURE THAT SIGNALS THEY ARE READY FOR SEX.
THE MALE WOODPECKER DOESNT SING WELL SO INSTEAD HE USES HIS HEAD DRUMMING ON ANY SURFACE THAT RESONATES AND WILL ATTRACT MATES.
THE BLUEJAY IMMIATES THE RED TAILED HAWK PERFECTLY TO WARN OTHERS ITS AROUND
THE BURROWING OWL MAKES THE EXACT SOUND OF A RATTLESNAKE TO WARN PREDATORS AWAY FROM ITS UNDERGROUND BURROW.
THE MALE RUFFED GROUSE MOUNTS A FALLEN LOG OR LARGE ROCK AND BEATS HIS WINGS AGAINST THE AIR CREATING A DRUMMING SOUND TO ATTRACT MATES.

  Hello Miss Ronnie~
I hope you are having a wonderful day. I'm getting some computer time this morning! It's been way to busy around here lately and I just don't like it!
Yesterday we took a break in the morning and watched Catching Fire. I really like it! Lots of action and you know I love action movies!
Today we are getting a bit of cooking done and getting mom ready to start her work week. She is going in an hour early tonight since I have been told we are losing an hour tonight! I really don't see any reason that the time has to change! It seems to be working just fine the way it is!
Mom went to Petco to get my Higgins Sunburst and they are out of it again! They say the warehouse is out of it so there is nothing they can do. She got me some Higgins Safflower Gold and it sort of looks and smells the same to me. There are no sunflower seeds in it but that is okay with me! It's only part of what I eat everyday so as long as she keeps a big supply of apples I will be a happy zon!
Spring is inching ever closer and that is making the frog outside my window go crazy! It started with just a few of them but last night it sounded like there were about a thousand of them out there! As long as they are here to announce spring I suppose I can put up with them!
I do hope you enjoy your day! Leaving a vote and a big hug as I waddle off!

  HI MISS RONNIE
Cori has just had her bath and had her beak buffed by Boo Boo. Boo Boo feels one must always look their best when speaking to the public. Cori clears her throat and continues her speech about bird songs.
male birds sing in the morning to appear more macho and by delivering a lusty dawn chorus he sends out the message he is full of energy and raring to go. blackbirds and song thrushes can do this more than 1-1/2 hours before chaffinches and blue tits. scientists have discovered that the bigger the birds eyes the sooner in the morning it strikes up its song. their singing not only determines their territory but attracts mates and also predators like owls. with their hearing out of action while they warble they must be able to rely on heir eyes to see attacks coming. those birds with smaller eyes need extra sunlight to be sure of their safety. birds pass on songs from generation to generation. fathers pass on their repertoire of chirps and tweets to their sons and mothers give theirs to their daughters. female songbirds learn their songs at a much faster rate than the males do (who didn't know that one). a female cardinal learned her selection of music in one third the time it took her male sibling to learn the exact songs. females are attracted to the male with the largest and loudest songs so those males really have to work it.male birds that imitate other songbirds songs like the mockingbirds, the mynah and the australian
lyrebird are very attractive to the female because they feel if the male knows so much about the other birds songs it must also know where they keep their food
supplies..
tomorrow we will continue along this same vein of thought

  HI MISS RONNIE
before Coris speech today Boo Boo trills some musical notes for every birdie. Cori then begins:

scientists thinks birds use the same combination of notes, rhythms and pitch as we do.
when researchers slowed down recordings of birdsong from two different species of wren they were surprised to discover they were singing classical music. a white breasted wood wren produced the familiar da da da daaaaah Beethovens Fifth Syrmphony, while a canyon wren sang a trilling cascade that almost exactly echoed the opening of Chopins Revolutionary E'tude. whether or not the composers drew inspiration from the birds song is unclear, but Mozart was at least willing to give credit to his pet starling for inspiring him. when the bird sang his new Piano Concerto in G Major back to him, with the sharps changed to flats,Mozart admitted it was an improvement and incorporated the starlings changes.
Birds produce many sounds made by orchestral musical instruments. the Australian Diamond Firetail Finch sounds like a oboe. the White-bellied green Imperial Pigeon or Strawberry Finch could easily be mistaken for a flute. the Potoo sings like a bassoon. the Western Crowned Pigeon from New Guinea woos its mates with notes that could be produced by a tuba. the Nightingale may have mother natures best musical ear. it can repeat complicated pieces of music containing 60 different "phrases" its singing abilities are exceptional with a repertoire including 900 different types of melody.
tomorrow i will talk more about birds and their singing.

I hope you are having a great day. It's cloudy up here and the rain will start soon but that is the way it is suppose to be this time of the year. We did have 2 really nice days so I can't complain about a little liquid sunshine!

I think spring it pretty close now because the pigeons outside have moved from the front to the eaves over our balcony. They do that in the spring. Mom will be cleaning poop off the balcony now but she would never complain. It's nice to hear them cooing out there and mom says they live here too! Some of the neighbors complained last year and they did the power washing up on their balconies to chase them away. I think that is why they came over here because we don't say a word about them being there! Mom is use to cleaning up poop!

We are doing some cooking today and then mom will get her stuff ready for her workweek to start tonight. I really think weekends are just too short.

Enjoy your day and I do hope it's a great one! Leaving a vote and a big hug!

They are in for a huge surprise when they get here and it's raining for 3 weeks straight!

Mom found a really cool screensaver of an amazon! The background is green and there is a really handsome amazon peaking at me from the right bottom corner! I have named him Wilbur and he is my computer buddy! She had to go get a new screensaver after she reloaded the programs!
The computer is working well and mom found a virus program, downloaded it and is running it every day! I just hope this never happens again!! It sure did take mom a long time to figure it all out but hey! She did it! I must say that I'm impressed!

  Hello Ms Veronica
Today I am featuring Tweety.

Him and his friends built an awesome sports complex at the kissing booth. There was a basket ball court, football field,
baseball field, game room, Olympic sized swimming pool, tennis court, boxing gym, etc.

We played lots of game and had serious competitions,
(The boys against the girls). We played lots of board games also. We also had a cross-country skiing contest.

We had lots of yummy health food. We ate lots of apple chips and nuts for snacks. The fresh fruit drinks were the best.

At night would play games in the game room and watch cartoon on the big screen TV. One night the boys were playing at the dart board and Tweety walked in front of it, the dart went through his tail feathers and pinned him to wall next to the dart board. Hee hee!!!
No harm done...

The funniest time is when Ms. Chirps coached the girls football team. She cut the strings off the boys football pants and tied their shoe strings together so the girls could win and we did !!! Heehee...
Tweety says his favorite thing that we did was play basketball and the boys beat the girls...And hanging out with his BC friends...
Fun, love and memories at the kissing booth...

Thank you for your votes. Much love to you all.

I hope you are having a nice day. My rain stopped and there is sunshine outside my window!!! A bit of a surprise but it is a welcomed one.
I know spring can't be too far off! It's not because of my sunshine, it's because there are Cadbury chocolate eggs on all the check stands at the store mom works at!hahahahahahahaha Yep! Only 2 short months until Easter so spring had got to be close! Right??
We spent yesterday cleaning off the balcony because the building is going to be pressure washed. They do it every year and it is a pain but at least it stays nice and clean out there. They said it had to be done by 8am and since mom doesn't get home from work until 8am we did it yesterday! So far no one has showed up and it might be tomorrow before anyone does but at least we are ready.
It's very noisy when they do it so mom puts the radio on to cover up the noise. I like listening to the radio anyway and it helps a little. I will have to do some squawking anyway because I am the BIRD! Mandy doesn't hear well anymore so I don't know if she will notice or not. If she does, she will try to get to the nearest exit and get out of here!hahahahaha Merlin, being a cat, will just roll over and go back to sleep!
Do you know about the website that Scion and Squeaky's mom is trying to get built? There is a note about it on the calendar page. It would be nice to have our very own page and if enough people sign up the cost would be really, really small. If we can get advertising the cost would be nothing!
