  Hi ya Peetie~
I hope you are having the most wonderful Easter ever! Things got busy around here so I have to keep it short today!
We are cooking a ham but we are not really going to have a sit down dinner since mom and Ian are working. Dad is in Montana somewhere! Everyone will eat when they can!

Mom finally got herself an MP3 player. Her's broke months ago and she just can't stand the "Leisure Suit Larry Lounge" music anymore! She found all the music files and started loading songs on the MP3 but when she looked, the songs were not there! It took my genius mom about half and hour to realize that Jennifer had her MP3 player plugged in also so mom put all that music on Jennifer's MP3 player! Boy is she going to be surprised!hahahahahahaha Mom is such a dork!!

Happy Easter!!

  Hi Peetie
Mom made our Easter bread yesterday, which is pretty much an all day affair. There are so many eggs in it, it takes forever to rise. She also did the hard custard, so it's in the fridge. She decided to do deviled eggs and dye the egg whites this year, so they are in the fridge as well. This way, people will eat them and she won't end up with a dozen hard boiled eggs. Last night she found a fish fry at a local church, so that's where she got dinner. It wasn't as good as the place she usually goes, though.
Today mom worked the Easter Egg Hunt at the museum. Guess where they put her? Yep, Bird Hall with a trainee. It was fun, the kids were so excited and the touchables were a hit, too. Everyone who stopped got a plastic egg with an owl shaped eraser inside.
Now mom is making the wedding soup for tomorrow. All in all it's going to be a good dinner, we think. We will get a sample of pasta and veggies, and maybe some salad out of it. I won't eat any, but the others will enjoy the treats. Hope you are having a good day, warm, sunny, and filled with love. Happy Easter! Hugs, Falco

Happy Easter to you too my friend and hope you and your family has a great one too!! Today was a very pretty day and mom had a few things she washed and hung them out and they dried so nice. The plumber came at 7:45 am and cleaned out the lines so that is why mom washed clothes too just to make sure that the water went down ok then which it did. The plumber was gone by 8:30 so didn’t take long and mom and dad are just glad its ok now. The clog was at the outside clean out pipe so dad didn’t take the red maple tree down and said he will leave it go awhile. “Dear Winter, I am breaking up with you.   Hi Sweetie Peetie
It's your princess Lola.
Sounds like your mom and Aunt Dede had fun. We have been experiencing Copious amounts of lockdown. It seams like mom and dad never stay home. Last week they were gone somewhere every day and dad was gone the entire weekend to a firearms training class. He said it was like boot camp all over again. Yesterday they went to see the movie "12 Years a Slave". Dad said it was one of the best movies he'd ever seen. The movie was very sad.
Today mom and dad work at the police dept. so we're locked down again. Hummmmph! I hope they stay home tomorrow.
We are still getting one or two small aftershocks a day. But we don't feel them.
Hope your day is good.
Love,

  Lifespan of a Diamond Dove
The lifespan of the diamond dove is different in captivity than if living in the wild.

In captivity, the diamond dove usually lives about 12-15 years. With proper care, they can even live into their 20's.

In the wild, however, diamond doves only live 3-5 years.

  Supplements
Your dove should be given a vitamin/mineral supplement to assure you are providing all the nutrients it needs, especially if it is a finicky eater.

Note: Although the directions may tell you to put the vitamins in water, this is not good to do. Vitamins can settle to the bottom or lose its potency. It is best to put the supplement on soft foods or moist fruits or vegetables.

In addition to a vitamin/mineral supplement, doves need a small amount of grit. Unlike most birds, doves swallow their seeds whole and grit helps to digest them.

There are two kinds of grit:

Indigestible grit, which is sand or bits of ground rock. However, if your bird overeats this, it can become sick.

Digestible grit such as oyster shell, ground cuttlebone, or crushed eggshells pass safely through their system and is also a good source of calcium.

  A Healthy Diet (Continued)
PROTEIN

In addition to fruits and vegetables, you need to include protein in your dove's diet.

Insects are a good source of protein, although they are not necessary for your dove. You can either give them live insects or dried ones.

Another good source of protein are chopped hard-boiled eggs. This is important for breeding doves that are raising chicks. Crushed egg shells mixed in with the egg will provide calcium with the protein. Note: Eggs must be cooked thoroughly. Your bird can become sick from partially or uncooked eggs.

You can also give your dove tiny bits of thoroughly cooked meat or bits of cheese. However, this should be given only rarely and as a special treat.

  A Healthy Diet
FRUITS AND VEGETABLES

Although all common pet doves are in the seed-eaters group, there are additional foods that can be a part their diet.

Seed-eating doves cannot tolerate large amounts of high-water-content foods. However, a daily treat of fresh food is fine for most doves.

Fruits and vegetables are a good source of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. When choosing produce, (one's that are safe for birds) bright colors are the healthiest choice. Example: sweet potatoes are more nutritious than white potatoes, red peppers have more vitamins than green peppers, and red grapes are higher in antioxidants than green grapes. Dark leafy green vegetables are also nutritious.

Some of the most favorite foods of the dove include:
shredded greens, grated carrots, finely chopped broccoli florets, diced apple, berries, fresh corn and peas. Your dove may not like all these foods, but as you experiment with differents ones, you will find that they may be some of their favorites.

  Doves As Pets
SETTING UP YOUR DOVE'S CAGE

Doves, like other pet birds, need a variety of perches to keep their feet exercised and comfortable. However, they do spend much of their time on the bottom of the cage, as I had mentioned in yesterday's blog. You can remove the wire tray at the bottom of the cage so your dove can walk comfortably. Besides your dove walking on the bottom and pecking for food, they spend a lot of time sitting at the bottom as well.

Doves also enjoy sitting in a nest. You will need to purchase a canary nest or you can make one of your own.

You will not need to purchase anything for your dove to play with. Doves do not play with toys or on a playgym.

  Doves As Pets
PURCHASING A CAGE

When purchasing a cage for a single or pair of ringneck or diamond doves, the measurements of the cage should be at least 24 inches in length, 16 inches wide and 18-24 inches in height.

Unlike parrots, doves do not climb, so the length of the cage is more important than the height.

However, doves do need to room to flap their wings and fly. They also spend a lot of time walking around on the bottom of the cage, so the bigger the cage, the better.

  Doves As Pets
DETERMINING THE GENDER OF THE IMMATURE DOVE

If you decide to purchase a pair of young doves, you may want to buy a male and female.
The only way to determine the gender of the immature dove would be to submit a blood sample for DNA analysis or have your vet examine them endoscopically.

The DNA sexing is simple and noninvasive. It is performed from a drop of blood from a clipped toenail or emerging blood feather.

Some pet stores can have this done for you or your vet can perform the test. You may want to have this done if you are interested in breeding your doves in the future.

  Doves As Pets
INTRODUCTION

Doves are gentle birds that are hardy. They are quiet birds, have a peaceful nature, and don't require as much complicated care as other species of birds. This makes them a good pet for the beginner.
Diamond doves are even good pets for young children as long as an adult supervises the care.
Since doves are quiet birds, they are good to keep in apartments where you may not be able to keep a noisy parrot.

Doves can be kept as single pets or in pairs but they do better in pairs. If you keep a single dove be prepared to give it lots of attention and interaction.

  Introduction to Doves (Conclusion)
Doves are divided into two groups: seed-eaters and fruit-eaters. Fruit-eaters are difficult birds to maintain in captivity and are not suitable as pets. All common pet doves are in the seed-eating group. (However, doves need food, in addition to their seeds, that I will mention at a later time in a blog on diets.) The most common pet doves are the diamond dove and the ringneck dove.

This week I have introduced doves and gave you information, which included their family, their origin,
and even how diamond doves acquired their name. I hope you found this information interesting as well as educational.

Next week, I will provide information on the care of doves as pets.

  The Diamond Dove's Origin,
The diamond dove is native to Australia. They exist near water but where it is lightly or semi-dry, which is in Central, West, and Northern Australia. They are occasionally seen in Southern Australia in parks and gardens in the Centre(the sparsely inhabited central region of Australia) where it is very dry.

As part of my BOTM campaign, I will be taking a trip to my native country to see some of the tourist attractions. If any of my BC friends would like to join me for this adventure, please let me know in your blog.   Introduction to Doves
HOW THE DIAMOND DOVES ACQUIRED THEIR NAME

The diamond dove has approximately 17 color mutations.
Their normal coloration is brownish gray to gray with an abdomen that is a creamy white color.
Adults have coral-colored eye rings, an olive brown beak, and flesh colored feet and legs.
They have specks on their feathers that looks like they were sprinkled with diamond dust. This is how diamond doves got their name.

It's your Princess Lola.
Yes we are all ok. A little, no, a lot shaken, but ok. Things are improving. Yesterday aftershocks only totaled seven and only three of them were over night. Mom and dad didn't feel any of the ones over night.
We had more rain overnight, too. It totaled 0.18 inches.
Yesterday, mom and dad went to the movies and saw The Monuments Men. It was a great movie. And last night was dad's monthly police meeting. The department bought pizza for all the patrol volunteers and they talked about emergency procedures for the volunteers. Today mom will work at the police station and dad will, well I really don't know what dad will do.
Hope your day is good.

  What Are Doves?
Doves are small pigeons, although there are differences between them. Pigeons are larger and stockier whereas doves are smaller and sleeker. However, there are exceptions to this rule.
Both doves and pigeons are muscular with short necks and heads on stout bodies. Their long wings are powered by flight muscles, which can make up to approximately 40% of their body weight.
The diamond dove, which only grows about 6 to 8 inches and weighs approximately an ounce, is the smallest dove.

  We are ok.
Last night we experienced a magnitude 5.1 earthquake centered about two miles from our house. An hours before the quake we had a 3.6 foreshock. Nobody is hurt. Just a lot of broken stuff; coffee cups, glasses and a few nic-nacs. All the birds are a little shaken up, as are my wife and me. There were aftershocks all night long so nobody got much sleep. Today we well be cleaning up the mess.
Take care.

  HI PEETIE
Cori decides to do something a little different today and tells Boo Boo to take a seat with the rest of the bird audience because today she is talking about Blue Jays. Boo Boo clapped her wings with glee upon hearing this and listens intently to Cori.

noisy and fearless and found throughout the eastern united states and canada but also extending westward and sometimes spotted in western states. there are a few legends that blue jays have acquired over the years. southerners say Blue Jays were yoked to a plow by a sparrow and the mark left by the ole can still be seen on the blue jays breast.
the Cherokee indianas suggest that if find a blue jay feather, soak it in water and then gently brush a childs eye with it, the child will become an wary riser. this will not work if the feather is taken from the bird, it must be found on the ground.
indians from the hudson bay area believe the Canadian jay crowed out a warning whenever the tried to sneak up on a Eskimo camp and for this reason the indians often killed the Canada Jay
because Blue Jays do not always retrieve all of the acorns and other seeds they bury in the fall, they are friends to the forest by "planting" new seeds.
around the time automobiles became common, a Jaywalker meant a rustic bumpkin who didn't look where he was going and a "Jay" often referred to a silly person perhaps because they were considered vain about their gaudy plumage.

HAPPY TGIF DAY

  Hi Peetie
Looking good there my Hatchday/BOTD friend. Glad you had a wonderful two days.
We woke up to more snow this morning. We have now beaten the record and have 184 inches of snow this season. Dad shoveled snow from the family room windows yesterday, it‘s back!. See the pic on my page.
I think that spring might be here tonight because it’s 33 and raining! I hope it melts some of the 3 to 4 feet of snow! We haven’t been that warm during the day! Ahhhh, spring!
Hugs

  Hi Peetie
We miss Chi chi very much also. Moms DIL likes to make all natural soaps and cleaning products. She gave mom a recipe so mom made it today. Its called 4 thieves cleaner. Here is the recipe if you want to make it too. 4 sprigs of fresh rosemary, 2 lemons with the skin peeled off, handful of whole cloves, 4 sticks of cinnamon, enough water to cover and boil with lid on. Leave sit 15 minutes then strain saving the liquid in another pan and also saving the rosemary mix. Do this 3 times. At the end throw the rosemary mix away and just keep the liquid . To use the liquid as a cleaner use 1 cup of mixture, 1 cup of water, ¼ cup of vinegar in a spray bottle. If you want to use it for wood use 1 cup of warm water, 2 T mixture, 1 t dawn dish soap and 1T olive oil in a spray bottle. Hope you like it and at least its safe for us fids too. “ Friendship is not something you learn in school. But if you haven’t learned the meaning of friendship, you really haven’t learned anything.” V4U Your BFF, Gus. (RIP Chi chi)
