DETERMINING THE GENDER OF THE IMMATURE DOVE

If you decide to purchase a pair of young doves, you may want to buy a male and female.
The only way to determine the gender of the immature dove would be to submit a blood sample for DNA analysis or have your vet examine them endoscopically.

The DNA sexing is simple and noninvasive. It is performed from a drop of blood from a clipped toenail or emerging blood feather.

Some pet stores can have this done for you or your vet can perform the test. You may want to have this done if you are interested in breeding your doves in the future.

  Vote Chipper for BOTM,
For those of you who don't know me, my name is Chipper and I am a diamond dove. I will be running in April for the BOTM in May. Since we are not your typical parrot-type pet, I will be sharing with you each day, in a brief blog, some interesting facts on doves.

Your votes are appreciated. Thanking you in advance for your support and leaving a vote too!

  HI DORY
Boo Boo does the HAPPY HUMPDAY dance before Coris speech:
the Ruby-Throated Hummingbird is the only hummingbird that breeds in the northeastern united states. one early naturalist felt the birds rapidly beating wings sounded like a bumble bee and named it the Humbird. the Ruby-Throated migrates from South America to southern canada flying non-stop , 500 miles, across the Gulf of Mexico.in the western united states the Rufous Hummingbird ranges farther north than any other hummingbird going as far as southern Alaska. the Annas Hummingbird resides in California wandering sometimes into Arizona and along the Rockies north into Canada . a popular myth was that the Hummingbirds must be hitchhiking a ride on larger birds to be able to travel such long distances.

hummingbirds have almost the highest metabolism of any warm blooded mammal and feed almost continuously often becoming torpid at night to preserve their energy. the female laying on her eggs doesn't have the luxury of lowering her metabolism at night since she must keep her 2 eggs warm. the intricately woven nest made up of spider web silk seems to protect her and her eggs from the cold.
in one Mayan legend birds who asked a tribal wiseman how to build a sturdy nest were sent to the hummingbirds for instructions.

  HI DORY
Boo Boo stands in front of the audience on this monday and gives a small introduction before Cori's campaign speech. since everybody is anxiously waiting for spring we thought we would end our campaign week talking about Hummingbirds, for when they return to the colder regions spring must be here even if it doesn't feel like it.

When the pilgrims stepped ashore in Massachusetts in 1620 the indian chiefs who greeted them wore strange, small glittering ornaments in their ears-they were stuffed hummingbirds. Cortez, the spanish conquistador was astonished when he met Montezuma in Mexico, to see that the Aztec emperor and nobles of the court were arrayed in long coats that shone brilliantly when the sun struck them. when such a cloak was presented to Cortez, he was amazed to find it made entirely of hundreds of hummingbird skins.

hummingbirds, the smallest of all birds(the Bee Hummingbird from Cuba is the size of a bumblebee) have almost been completely obliterated from the earth several times. somehow they managed to survive. in the 19th century it was fashionable to decorate ladies hats with them and millions were killed for it. in 1860 more than 500,000 hummingbird skins were auctioned in london. eventually laws were passed in the united states and london making it illegal to trade in hummingbird skins plus fashions changed so hummingbirds slowly made a recovery considering they only lay 2 small pearl sized eggs a year and are the prey of larger birds and squirrels. the destruction of their forests where they make their nests and pesticides are are now increasingly taking their toll on the tiny "jewels of the sky"

  Hi Dory!
We won the posting contest! Mommy won a $500 gift card to My Safe Bird Store. She placed an order and got a bunch of toy parts, toys, and treats for all 4 of us. It should be here on Wednesday. I'm excited! This afternoon, mommy let me sit on Jester's playstand. She said I looked so tiny on it! I didn't like it though, I prefer to be on or right next to mommy. Hugs, Peatree

  HI DORY
before Cori begins her speech Boo Boo dusts her off and then wishes all the birds a wonderful day.
found mostly in the old world, the Kingfisher is a bright jewel of a bird who skims over the water in a flash of blue and orange, dicing for small fish, crayfish, frogs and insects.its eyes have oval lenses enabling it to see well in the air as well as underwater. wearing the Kingfishers feathers was believed to heighten the wearers beauty.in britton it was believed the bird could glow in the dark. it was believed that the Kingfisher was originally a dull colored bird but Noah releases the Kingfisher from his arc in order to find land. after being confined for so long the bird flew up to the sky until it took on the blue color of the heavens. then it flew so close to the sun its breast was scorched so it was forced to dive into the water below . at this point it remembered it was suppose to find land and went in search of the ark but could no longer find it since Noah had long since landed on Mt Arafat. this is why the Kingfisher continues to this day flying along rivers calling out to Noah. it was also believed that upon death the birds did not decay so their bodies were placed among clothes to preserve them. whoever owned dead Kingfisher would be granted grace and loveliness by wearing its feathers. plucking feathers from a Kingfisher and throwing them in water, then retrieving only the feathers that floated and stroking a loved one with them was considered a powerful love talismans. dead Kingfishers hung up by their beaks with a thread foretold the direction the wind would blow by which direction their breast faced.
RENEGE AFFIRM, AND TURN THEIR HALEYCON BEAKS
WITH EVERY GALE AND VARY OF THEIR MASTERS…..shakespeare
it is amazing how birds are able to survive despite man! the amazon and green Kingfishers are found from Mexico to Argentina and are stable at about 500,000 in population.

  HI DORY
Boo Boo wishes everybirdy a HAPPY TGIF DAY before Cori begins her speech.

The dove has always been a symbol of peace and love since earliest recorded times. the dove served as a symbol for aphridite as the symbol of love, being both affectionate (hence the term loveydovey) and sexually active. aphrodite was believed to have been hatched from a doves egg and brought ashore by fish. in syria the goddess astarte was saved from starvation in the desert by doves who fed her milk and cheese and turned her into a dove on her death. a dove was sent from the ark by Noah in christian religion to check on whether the flood waters were receding. when the dove returned with a sprig of olive branch in its beak Noah knew god had forgiven mankind. in christian religion the dove is the symbol of the holy ghost. in the middle east the dove is held as sacred when a ruler who was killed in battle hd 2 doves fly from his heart. it was also believed any bird of prey who killed a dove would drop dead. in japan doves were believed to be messengers of war rather than symbols of peace when he was saved from discovery while hiding in a tree by two doves that flew out and convinced the enemy the tree was hiding nope. in italy russia and germany it was considered sin to kill a dove. while in the channel islands it was considered unlucky to keep pet doves which would cause a difficult marriage
TIME DOTH WORK WHAT NO MAN KNOWETH
TIME DOTH US THE SUBJECT PROVE
WITH TIME STILL AFFECTION GROWETH
TO THE FAITHFUL TURTLE DOVE -chaucer with the belief that doves are eternally faithful to their mates

  Hi Dory
We are so sorry it has been a month since our last blogging but the parront has been busy working 5am to 1:30pm for the last 8 weeks. She needs to save some money and also to pay home and car insurance. The A/C broke and she does not know yet how much will be the cost to repair it. The weather is getting hot here already. She also needs a new car, so many expenses.

On Monday 24February she got her first injection on the lower back, there was no much improvement after it, last Monday she got 2 more injections on her lower back, so far her lower back is not bothering her. On Monday 31 she will have another injection on the cervical area.

Also the computer is getting slow, and she does not understand windows 8 yet so she could start using her new laptop.

This is our current situation. Since she is very busy we don't know yet when we will be able to blog again.

This is all for know

See you soon

Haha, Falco does that sometimes, too. I usually play with my toys on top of my cage when I'm out and about. This morning Peppino flew out of his food door. Mom was really glad that Daisy was outside at the time! He is a good flyer, but doesn't land so well. Hope you are having a good day. Hugs, Willie

Kind, talented Aunt Mary did my Easter picture for me and guess that is a chick for me LOL. I have my Suzi though and dont need another chick. I cant hide under the papers cause the grate is in the way but mom thinks I would try if I could. Happy Spring and sure hope it sprung up around your house today for you. It was around 40 here today and cloudy but after this past winter that is warm weather and we are happy to have it. We did have some snow flurries here this morning and sprinkles/snow off and on through the day. We keep wondering if warm weather will ever come back again! Mom has a bad back so she has been sitting on the heating pad tonight. She says this last birthday sure did her in but hoping now she will be on the mends as soon as the back problems quit. ”When we honestly ask ourselves which person in our lives means the most to us, we often find that it is those who instead of giving advise, solution or cures, have chosen rather to share our pain and touch our wounds with a warm and tender hand. “ V4U Your BFF, Gus.   HI DORY
Named for the striking yellow tufts that grow above its eyes during breeding season, the tufted puffin is one of the most loved birds in North America. The tufted puffin’s striking breeding season coloration has earned it such names as “sea parrot” and “clown of the sea.” With its short wings that allow it to swim expertly underwater, the tufted puffin dives for prey along coasts of California, Oregon, and Washington where populations of this seabird, as well as in Japan, are in trouble, as lack of prey, climate change, fishing, oil spills, and other dangers take their toll. Tufted puffins are able to dive up to 60 meters to catch small fish like sardines, herring, and anchovy and may make as many as 360 dives per day when foraging to feed their chicks. Breeding populations of tufted puffins in California, Oregon, and Washington have declined by 85 to 90 percent in the last three decades, from more than 30,000 birds to no more than 4000 today. Most of these remaining puffins are in Washington. Oregon and California are each estimated to have breeding populations of less than 300 birds. The population in Japan is down to ten breeding pairs. Tufted puffins are still numerous in Alaska and British Columbia. But the more southern populations that are in steep decline encompass a significant portion of the species’ historic range and contain genetic diversity that is important to maintain if the species is to persist in the long-term, particularly with impacts from climate change escalating. humans are the cause of the tufted puffin’s plight. Climate change, driven by our burning of fossil fuels, is altering temperatures and circulation patterns of our oceans, disrupting the food web and making it harder for puffins to forage and to successfully reproduce. Puffins are also caught as bycatch in commercial fishing nets, drowning underwater when they cannot surface for air.
Diving for food and roosting on the surface of the water makes the tufted puffin highly vulnerable to impacts from oil spills. A single oil spill can wipe out entire breeding colonies. In fact, in 1991, the Tenyo Maru oil spill off the coast of Washington killed about 10 percent of the state’s population of tufted puffins. Similarly, the Exxon Valdez spill was responsible for the death of up to 13,000 Alaskan tufted puffins in 1989.
To compound the problem, tufted puffins generally return to the same colony each year and even if any birds were tempted to stray, breeding colonies in the contiguous United States are physically separated from other breeding colonies to the north. This has made recovery very difficult as population numbers dwindle. In recent years,
