Hi! My name is Cleo

I am a Normal grey Cockatiel from Nelson, BC.

Not yet

5 years old   M

Normal grey Cockatiel

I love millet, spinach, mixed veggies and sugar snap peas! I also love the cooked whole grain mixes that mom makes for me!

I love to hang out on my cage and also the upper branches of the climbing tree. I love to fly up to the curtain rods and wait for mom to rescue me. As my wings are clipped it is quite an effort but I still can make it!

I don't like the fact that my wings are clipped but mom says that they will grow back in. I just can't wait to get my pilot's license back! I also don't like to be shooed off the high perches of the climbing tree by Joey. Something about him being the 'alpha male'?

She is patient and gentle with me. She also loves to spend time with me and talk to me and I just love all the attention! I love to sit on her hand and get head scratches...I knew those fingers would be good for something! She gives me neat toys to chew on and just recently a large brass bell! I just love bells!

Until I came to my forever home I had never seen a mirror before. The first time I looked into the one in my cage I hissed and backed away. I peeked again, hissed and backed away. The third time I looked I was so enamoured with how cute I am that I have become a mirror fan! I absolutely love them!.

Life is better with a mirror and a pet human to love you!.

  Hi Cleo
It was warmer here to day then yesterday but not as sunny though. Today was a very pretty day and mom had a few things she washed and hung them out and they dried so nice. The plumber came at 7:45 am and cleaned out the lines so that is why mom washed clothes too just to make sure that the water went down ok then which it did. The plumber was gone by 8:30 so didn’t take long and mom and dad are just glad its ok now. The clog was at the outside clean out pipe so dad didn’t take the red maple tree down and said he will leave it go awhile. “Dear Winter, I am breaking up with you. I think its time I start seeing other seasons. Summer is hotter then you”. Left you a vote~~ hugs, Gus. (RIP Chi chi)

  Hi, Cleo
Gulp! Mom took us to the vet yesterday for our well bird check. Got in the carrier as we thought a visit to gma or something, but no! No critters in the waiting area when we arrived but a roomful of furballs when we left. They were behaved though. We are the picture of health (as eggspected) and got trimmed claws and polished beaks. We get to keep our wings so long as furball is living here.

Glad that Chicklet is enjoying the new gym. We've never used mirrors much as we can look at each other and it's like looking in a mirror anyway. Chicklet World is a good name for the bathroom.

Continued 70s temps and sunny here. So long as we stay out of the 80s all is good, eggcept for the lack of rain that is.

Have a great day, wing hugs and a vote, Pearl and Silver.

  Hey Cleo
Mom slept in this morning and is staying home with me - we're making Easter Babka today ! (Lithuanian Easter Bread). Dad is going to the g'parronts to start prepping to paint the living room/dining room. He figures if he can get the furniture moved and the taping done today - tomorrow he'll do the walls and Monday the ceilings -

Yesterday there were yard workers across the street and boy did I let them know how I felt about it ! Mom keeps trying to explain that everything I see isn't mine, but I disagree ! ! So she finally closed the curtain by my window . . . harrruuummmmphhhhhhh

No I enjoy company and mom says I am very social ..what ever that means LOL. Boy was it cold outside here this morning! Mom said it got to 23 last night as our low and finally warmed up today. We even had sunny skies which was nice but still so cold and a bit windy as well. It may be a good while before its warm to sit outside in the sun again. At least I know it should happen some time soon and at least winter is (or should be) behind us now. “Dear Winter, I am breaking up with you. I think its time I start seeing other seasons. What a beautiful day we are having for our trip. Everybirdie is having such a good time. There is an activity planned for each night on the boat.

Last night, there was music and refreshments, just a time of fellowship for all of us to get to know one another better. Refreshments will be served all day today as well.

Tonight, we are going to see the movie Rio 2. There will be fresh popcorn and drinks for everybirdie.

  Hi, Cleo
Think mom'll be stopping at Sees on the way home from work today to get some chocolate Easter eggs. It'll be too busy later in the week.

Still no sign of more rain here, but didn't really eggspect any. Another nice spring day, temps in the low 70s, sunny and breezy yesterday.

Okay, so you and Sunny can't share your mom when it comes to scritches. We will sit next to each other, but mom does find it difficult to scritch both of us by alternating. Sounds like all of you must just wait your turn for those coveted head scritching.

Have a great day, wing hugs and a vote, Pearl and Silver.

  Hi Cleo !
We woke up this morning to a little less than an inch of (gulp) SNOW ! What's that about ? It's April 16th ! After it being near 70 for a week, now today is only in the 40's. Good thing mom didn't get any of her annuals yet - freeze warnings (right now it's 31) till 10:00 and again tonight !

Mom is counting the minutes till her upcoming long weekend - actually it's a little more than long - off tomorrow at noon till next Wednesday. Yesterday was one of THOSE days - the kids are so excited about vacation that it was like pulling a train with her teeth trying to get anything done !

Hope you have a great day :) Hugs from Cookie

Perhaps if you fly over to your mom again while she has Sunny with her he won't be startled and you can both get some scritches.

  Morning Cleo
We got up early to try to see the lunar eclipse but there are way too many clouds today -

Tuesday already - rain today and believe it or not, back into the 30's tonight :( Just when mom is getting ready for her mini-vacation - jeepers the awful winter lingers on shortening our vacations - 3 snow days have to be made up . . . there was supposed to be a whole week off -

Did you see the forsythia in front of my house ? It's all in bloom and looking so pretty - just in time for Easter ! Mom brought the camera out after dinner when she and dad went for a walk. One day when it's not cloudy she'll take pictures of where they walk - right along the river -

Have a terrific Tuesday ! love Cookie

  Hi Cleo
I usually yell when I see people cause I like being part of their clan and am very socialable too. Nope mom didnt buy anything at the yard sale but I was glad we went. Now we are in for winter again. Going to get sleet/rain tonight and cold again. The condo mom had for Chi chi was the size mom was going to get for me and then got me the next size bigger so it was huge for Chi chi and good for me also. Mom and dad went to see moms sister and her husband a little while today. Mom hasn’t seen her sister since last year when she left to spend the winter in Arizona so they were happy to see one another again. I took a little nap while they were gone so that worked out good for me too. “Dear Winter, I am breaking up with you. I think its time I start seeing other seasons. Summer is hotter then you”.   Lifespan of a Diamond Dove
The lifespan of the diamond dove is different in captivity than if living in the wild.

In captivity, the diamond dove usually lives about 12-15 years. With proper care, they can even live into their 20's.

In the wild, however, diamond doves only live 3-5 years.

Kinda thought the entire flock would help Sunny to celebrate his anniversary and also his uneggspected BOTD win. Think the rule is that whoever gets the most votes and is eligible. So many may have gotten more votes than Sunny did but had already been BOTD recently.

Did you get some scritches when you fly over to join Sunny on your mom's hand? Guess you didn't want to wait for her to come over to you, heehee.

Continues to be low 70s and pleasant here too. The fresh air was coming in thru open windows and the screen door.

A couple exciting days at your house huh ? Another Monday - where does the time go ? At least this is a short week - mom gets out at noon on Thursday and then is home till next Wed. I hope the weather stays just like it's been the last couple days :)

Yesterday while mom and dad went to visit the g'parronts, mom stopped at the chocolate store near their house. Since it's all homemade (and expensive) she only goes for Christmas and Easter. When she got home she had to find a good hiding place so that dad wouldn't eat it before Easter !

  Hi Cleo
yea some humans say I am spoiled but mom says I am just greatly loved LOL. Guess its one of the percs of being an only fid in the house maybe. Today there was a yard sale down the road so mom put me in the stroller and we went to see what they had. At first they thought I was a dog in my stroller but quickly saw I was a fid LOL. I only yelled loud once while we were there I was so excited. Then as we were leaving and going thru a neighbors yard I started to yell by by but of course they couldn’t hear me anyway. Then when we got home I got to sit outside in the sun while mom sat on the porch swing. Mom put Chi chi old cage together again and I use it on the porch for the summer now. Its a lot like mine but the next size smaller so I have lots of room in it. “Happiness is when we realize how blessed we are for what we have.” Leaving a vote for you my friend~ Gus. (RIP Chi chi)

Doves are relatively quiet birds. They make a variety of soft, low-pinched cooing sounds. Their cooing, however, may be persistent and repetitive. Many people find the cooing very pleasant.

  Hi, Cleo
Thanks for liking our derby hat pic. That's the second attempt as the first came out blurry. Guess the pic of us was blurry. We entered the hat contest for the Milonga derby.

Oh, forgot that girl birds are called hens. We knew girls didn't sound quite right but we did mean hens.

Hope that tire can be repaired soon as would imagine if driving on it would cause the air to come out quicker? Not sure and also not sure how they find a lil leak that to repair it either. (Know how they do it with bicycle tires as seen our dad work on 'em.)

Another barely 70 day for us yesterday, so nice. The windows were open here too and sure nice air out the house days in a row.

When we saw that it was Sunny's hatchday/anniversary we didn't know it was your frother as Sunny is a very common bird name. Hope all of you got a bit of millet as we know you could see Sunny enjoying his, but as his special day should get it first.

Yes I am sure Joey and Chi chi are up there cloud hopping and having fun and watching over us too. After mom gets done with dinner dishes she cleans my condo and gives me all fresh foods and water and then mom sits on the one end of the couch and I sit on the back. Sometimes mom reads or will look at her email and I relax. Well tonight dad had the nerve to sit in moms seat on the couch just as she was finishing up in the kitchen. I flew over and beaked him and then I yelled at him too. I guess he understood cause by the time mom was ready to sits he left and went in his own chair.   Supplements
Your dove should be given a vitamin/mineral supplement to assure you are providing all the nutrients it needs, especially if it is a finicky eater.

Note: Although the directions may tell you to put the vitamins in water, this is not good to do. Vitamins can settle to the bottom or lose its potency. It is best to put the supplement on soft foods or moist fruits or vegetables.

In addition to a vitamin/mineral supplement, doves need a small amount of grit. Unlike most birds, doves swallow their seeds whole and grit helps to digest them.

There are two kinds of grit:

Indigestible grit, which is sand or bits of ground rock. However, if your bird overeats this, it can become sick.

Digestible grit such as oyster shell, ground cuttlebone, or crushed eggshells pass safely through their system and is also a good source of calcium.

  Hi, Cleo
Whenever we hear of girl fids having egg troubles our mom is glad we turned out to be boys. At the time of our adoption there was no preference and didn't think about the fact that unpaired females could and would lay. Hopefully Chicklet never has another egg problem and same goes for Poppy.

We cooled down to 70 yesterday, so much nicer spring temp than being close to 80.

How fun to see Chicklet make toothpicks of her toy. Really is no happier sight for parronts to see. We doubt it'll take her long to get used to the gym.

Too bad about the tire. Good thing it happened after all those long vet visit trips are over and hopefully will get repaired soon.

  Hi Cleo
I am finally able to get around a little better with my short nails and beak trim. I was so disgusted that I just sat on my sleep perch with my beak tucked into my wing back for a day. I was glad at least mom didn’t decide to get my wing feathers cut so I can still fly. When mom got home she looked at her slip and started thinking Cindy made a mistake since it wasn’t as much as usual. Then she remembered she always had me and Chi chi both get groomed and we all felt sad that Chi chi is no longer here with us. Glad we have such sweet memories of her and hope she is happy at the rainbow bridge.   A Healthy Diet (Continued)
PROTEIN

In addition to fruits and vegetables, you need to include protein in your dove's diet.

Insects are a good source of protein, although they are not necessary for your dove. You can either give them live insects or dried ones.

Another good source of protein are chopped hard-boiled eggs. This is important for breeding doves that are raising chicks. Crushed egg shells mixed in with the egg will provide calcium with the protein. Note: Eggs must be cooked thoroughly. Your bird can become sick from partially or uncooked eggs.

You can also give your dove tiny bits of thoroughly cooked meat or bits of cheese. However, this should be given only rarely and as a special treat.

  Hi, Cleo
We figured that it was easy enough to move the play gym out of the tub for your mom to use. That's good that Chicklet is getting used to it and playing and chewing up toys on it. Saw the great pics in her gallery.

Still spring here, but temps went up a tad so was closer to 80, but didn't need the a/c. It cools off nicely in the evening so had the windows open much of the day.

Sounds like your flock is doing so awesome. After Chicklets health scare you deserve to just be happy fids with the chewing of toys and lots of treats and scritches.

  Hey Cleo
Yep, our moms sound like they like lots of the same things - we even do Valentine's Day here - and Halloween ! But my mom loves the fall the best too -

TGIF ! Of course mom won't be home right after school like she usually is on Fridays :( Out of nowhere, she got a new computer for her classroom yesterday - the tech wanted to hook it up then, but the kids were working and besides she had to run out for a flash drive to save all her files. The school has a public network which is fine for some of her files, but tests ? I don't think so ! Can't put those where anyone has access ! Anyway, she and dad went and picked one up (and burgers for dinner too !) so she's ready to hook up the new one -

A great weekend coming after some rain today - dad promised to move my cage over by the window this weekend ! ! ! Have a fun day :) love Cookie

  A Healthy Diet
FRUITS AND VEGETABLES

Although all common pet doves are in the seed-eaters group, there are additional foods that can be a part their diet.

Seed-eating doves cannot tolerate large amounts of high-water-content foods. However, a daily treat of fresh food is fine for most doves.

Fruits and vegetables are a good source of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. When choosing produce, (one's that are safe for birds) bright colors are the healthiest choice. Example: sweet potatoes are more nutritious than white potatoes, red peppers have more vitamins than green peppers, and red grapes are higher in antioxidants than green grapes. Dark leafy green vegetables are also nutritious.

Some of the most favorite foods of the dove include:
shredded greens, grated carrots, finely chopped broccoli florets, diced apple, berries, fresh corn and peas. Your dove may not like all these foods, but as you experiment with differents ones, you will find that they may be some of their favorites.

  Hi, Cleo
We need to fly over to Chicklet's and see the pics. Just love to see fids enjoying their toys and hope that Chicklet can figure out how to get that almond out of the toy.

Yeah, anything with millet in it think we'd get used to it. Think coconuts are very hard too so would last a long time.

After our two days of 80s temps yesterday we feel back to our 70s, ahhhhh, so much more like spring should be. Think those marigold seeds should grown if your weather is more springlike and sunny. They will be very pretty over Angel Joey's gravesite.

No rain in sight for us, but we're gonna be hoping for some though April is not typically a rainy month.

Hope your mom gets to use the shower occasionally if Chicklet allows it! (Unless, does Chicklet have a shower perch and joins in?)

Our mommies sound a lot alike ! They both love to decorate - some holidays more than others (Christmas first, then Easter) but there's something for each one !

Spring is surely here ! The breezes coming off the Hudson are still cool, but the sun is warm and the flower shop is about to open !

Mom is trying very hard to stay healthy ! Yesterday there were 5 students out with strep and 2 more went home during the day - she stayed yesterday and wiped down all the desks and shelves with disinfectant so the germs wouldn't get any further -

I was a real cranky quaker ! I even gave dad a good bite when he was too slow getting my dinner ! I never do that ! So I got tucked in early with hopes of a better today !

Have a good one :) love Cookie

Boy mom is on a roll with getting things done here the last few days. Yesterday she went for her blood work like she does every 3 months while she was out getting groceries and to the fruit stand. Then today she took me to get my nails and beak done which didn’t make me overjoyed but mom says now my nails don’t hurt her hands when she holds me. At least I still have all my feathers and can fly since mom wont get them cut again unless she really needs too. I pick my feathers more when they are cut but mom says that is an ekkie thing too. Don’t matter what it is just so I can still fly!! Sure wore me out and I have been resting since we got back home a lot.   Doves As Pets
SETTING UP YOUR DOVE'S CAGE

Doves, like other pet birds, need a variety of perches to keep their feet exercised and comfortable. However, they do spend much of their time on the bottom of the cage, as I had mentioned in yesterday's blog. You can remove the wire tray at the bottom of the cage so your dove can walk comfortably. Besides your dove walking on the bottom and pecking for food, they spend a lot of time sitting at the bottom as well.

Doves also enjoy sitting in a nest. You will need to purchase a canary nest or you can make one of your own.

You will not need to purchase anything for your dove to play with. Doves do not play with toys or on a playgym.

PURCHASING A CAGE

When purchasing a cage for a single or pair of ringneck or diamond doves, the measurements of the cage should be at least 24 inches in length, 16 inches wide and 18-24 inches in height.

Unlike parrots, doves do not climb, so the length of the cage is more important than the height.

However, doves do need to room to flap their wings and fly. They also spend a lot of time walking around on the bottom of the cage, so the bigger the cage, the better.

  Hi, Cleo
Awwwww, we love your bunny ears pic!

We assume Jazz chases you and Sunny away as you are the competition for Poppy. He may just wear her down heehee. How fun to have the chewing competitions since you always enjoyed those with Angel Joey.

That's great that Chicklet is still working on the pink toy. We haven't tried a coconut type toy before but have heard of other fids liking 'em. You mean Chicklet hadn't already taken over the bathroom? LOL!

Sounds like you are having spring there. It's been in the low 80s here the last couple of days. Too warm for spring we say. Forecast to cool back to the 70s. We need more rain though we did get a lil bit last week.

We didn't have any trouble getting on BC, but several other birds reported issues of one sort or another. Oh, sometimes we get the white page and have refresh but he puter puts the blame on our browser for that.

Have a great day, wing hugs and a vote, Pearl and Silver.

Come visit me, Pearl & Silver.

  Awwww . . . Cleo
You look so ready for Easter ! Does your mom decorate the whole house for it too ? We have bunny soap dispensers in the bathroom and kitchen - then there's the dish towels and pot holder - and bunnies and chicks all over ! ! !

Seems like lots of friends have been running into the dastardly squawk-a-tiels ! We've had a couple of problems getting to the log-in page (page not available), but not a single squawk ! Good thing too - mom gets frustrated enough with the Windows 8 on this silly machine !

Coming home from school last night mom noticed there are buds on the forsythia ! ! And the garden shop down the street got in another truckload ! ! Looks like he'll be ready to open this weekend :) Can't wait ! The owner has an m2 who likes to come to work and help in the summer time - mom will go sometimes just to visit with the handsome guy (the fid !) -

Don't forget to try your wing at the MOUNTAIN of songs over at Name that Tune on page 231616 ! ! !

love Cookie

  Doves As Pets
INTRODUCTION

Doves are gentle birds that are hardy. They are quiet birds, have a peaceful nature, and don't require as much complicated care as other species of birds. This makes them a good pet for the beginner.
Diamond doves are even good pets for young children as long as an adult supervises the care.
Since doves are quiet birds, they are good to keep in apartments where you may not be able to keep a noisy parrot.

Doves can be kept as single pets or in pairs but they do better in pairs. If you keep a single dove be prepared to give it lots of attention and interaction.

  Introduction to Doves (Conclusion)
Doves are divided into two groups: seed-eaters and fruit-eaters. Fruit-eaters are difficult birds to maintain in captivity and are not suitable as pets. All common pet doves are in the seed-eating group. (However, doves need food, in addition to their seeds, that I will mention at a later time in a blog on diets.) The most common pet doves are the diamond dove and the ringneck dove.

This week I have introduced doves and gave you information, which included their family, their origin,
and even how diamond doves acquired their name. I hope you found this information interesting as well as educational.

Next week, I will provide information on the care of doves as pets.

HAVE A GOOD WEEKEND! THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT AND VOTES TO HELP ME BECOME YOUR NEXT BOTM. LEAVING A VOTE FOR YOU!!

  The Diamond Dove's Origin,
The diamond dove is native to Australia. They exist near water but where it is lightly or semi-dry, which is in Central, West, and Northern Australia. They are occasionally seen in Southern Australia in parks and gardens in the Centre(the sparsely inhabited central region of Australia) where it is very dry.

As part of my BOTM campaign, I will be taking a trip to my native country to see some of the tourist attractions. If any of my BC friends would like to join me for this adventure, please let me know in your blog. This will take place toward the end of the month after I have finished giving you my information on doves.

HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND! THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR SUPPORT AND VOTES TO HELP ME BECOME YOUR NEXT BOTM.
