Neither rain, nor sleet, nor gloom of an impending ice storm could stay Mom and Dad from their determined goal to make it to the Greater Kansas City Caged Bird Show last March [2009]! Mind you, they had no intention of bringing home a birdie, but they were in dire need of a few items that a parront can’t find for their fids in any stores in the Kansas City area. They found everything they needed…ME ! ! !

Okay, Corkus Porkus…let’s give everybirdy the WHOLE story, shall we? Corky’s dad and mom had been talking about finding a pal for their 6 year old Green-Cheeked Conure, TidBit, for quite some time. His mom had even considered a beautiful little Green-Rumped Parakeet she met at the local pet store. But somehow, it just didn’t ‘feel’ like the right match, so she let that opportunity pass. While browsing at the bird show, she spied the most gorgeous little Turqouise Mutation Green-Cheek, that she just simply could not walk away from. Corky’s dad knows when his wife’s heart has just flown the coop, so all there was left to do was pick up supplies for the new baby too!

Hi! My name is © Corkus Turquoisius Maximus [aka Corky!]

I am a Green-Cheeked Conure from Warrensburg, MO.

My "formal" name is © Corkus Turquoisius Maximus. But I get called Corky, Corky Porky, Corkus Porkus, Corkimorkus (And any other “…orkus-Y” sounding variation Mom comes up with in the moment!)

5 years old   M

Green-Cheeked Conure

I’m not real adventurous about taking treats yet. But just the other night, Mom nearly passed out when I actually took a morsel of Pizza crust from her! Although, she suspects that the Stitch’s Spicy Popcorn she gives me while we watch Sunday Night Football is going somewhere OTHER THAN the bottom of my cage. (…I’ll never tell!)

You can pretty much find me either hangin’ out as close to the side of my cage next to TidBit’s cage as I can get. Or layin’ on my back on the floor of my cage playin’ with my toys. (That REALLY panics Mom ‘cause she can’t see me right away when she looks in my cage!) I’m just starting to feel comfortable outside of my cage anywhere but on Mom’s finger.

I’m a pretty easy goin’ Little Fid. About the only thing I don’t like is Mom gettin’ too MUSHY for too LONG! (Geeze, can’t she just give me ONE kiss and be DONE WITH IT?!)

When I wake up every morning…there’s Mom. When it’s time to go nite nite every evening…there’s Mom. Whenever I want attention…there- ’s Mom. Whenever I DON’T want attention…there- ’s Mom! (Oops…maybe that shoulda been up in “My pet peeves:”)

I’m not quirky…I’M CORKY!.

Like I just said…”I’m not quirky…I’M CORKY!”.

  Hi Corky
Since its going to be Thanksgiving in a few short weeks I think that we are all going to meet in the kitchen and start preparing some things for the Thanksgiving feast we will be having here at the Castle! We will go shopping for some of the supplies and then come back to the castle and cook and bake them up! The first thing on our list is some Apple Stuffing!
APPLE STUFFING

¾ cup of butter
¾ cup of milk
1/3 cup of chopped celery with leaves
1 cup of chopped onion salt to tast
1/2teaspoon of marjoram
½ teaspoon of ground cinnamon
¼ teaspoon of ground black pepper
8 cups of soft bread cubes
2 cups of washed, quartered, pared and diced apples

1. In a saucepan mix together the butter, milk, celery, onion, salt, marjoram, cinnamon and pepper; cook over low heat until the vegetables are tender.
2. Blend the bread cubes, and apples.
3. Lightly toss the seasoned, melted butter with the bread mixture.
4. Cool the stuffing completely.
5. Stuff the turkey just before roasting
6. Leftover stuffing can be baked in a covered baking dish in the oven with the turkey during the last half hour of roasting.

We'll all go shopping for all the ingredients and then we can come back and make up enough for everyone to share!
Wishing you a great day and I'm sending you all my love along with warm birdie hugs and soft beakie kisses! Love,King Dixie

  Hi Corky
Baked Pumpkin

Cut a 3-inch circle around the stem and remove. Then remove the seeds. (Use the seeds for pumpkin seed recipes.) Placing the pumpkin on a cookie sheet, bake for 1-1 ½ hours or until it is tender. Pierce with a fork to check if it is done.
You can also cut the pumpkin in quarters and place face down on a buttered cookie sheet. Cool. Use the leftover pumpkin in recipes or serve as is. You can freeze the leftovers.
This is an excellent food for weaning baby birds and for parent birds feeding babies. I have a friend who serves this on top of Zwieback teething cookies. She will sometimes soak the Zwieback and then add it into the mix.
For older birds who are hard to get interested in new foods, I have found that sprinkling millet or chopped nuts on top will encourage them to eat.

TIP: At Halloween, buy an extra pumpkin for your bird. While the kids are busy carving theirs, you can cook one for your bird. Save the seeds for an extra treat.

I want to thank you again for all the love and supporting votes you have been giving me each and everyday! I just couldn't have done it without you!
Wishing you a great day and I'm sending you all my love along with warm birdie hugs and soft beakie kisses! Love,Dixie

  Hi Corky
Millet Mac and Cheese

I was given a female cockatiel that never ate anything but millet before she came to live with me. She was especially stubborn when it came to trying new things. Using this recipe, I got her eating new foods in no time at all. This is a great one for getting small to medium-size birds to try new foods. For larger birds, try chopped sunflowers or pistachio nuts.

1 box any brand macaroni and cheese ¼ cup grated carrots
½ cup Kaytee pellets ¼ cup chopped broccoli
½ cup millet

Make the macaroni and cheese according to the instructions on the box. Add in the pellets and grated carrots. Sprinkle the millet on top, lightly pushing it into the macaroni with the back of a spoon. (My tiels loved the millet and started eating that, but because it was pushed into the macaroni and cheese, they ended up having to eat some of that as well. Now the same tiels will eat anything that I give them.) Putting millet in this dish will entice even the pickiest of birds. (You can also try mega millet for larger birds.)

HELPFUL HINT: If you don't have broccoli, you can add cauliflower or asparagus instead.

I can't thank you enough for all the love and supporting votes you have been sending me each and every day! I just couldn't have done it without you! I'm so sorry for the short visit but Mom has another one of those out everyday of the week things going on again. She was supposed to stay home with us yesterday but skin sis called and wanted her to spend the day with her and Nana,so she didn't get home til after 6:30 last night,Wednesday she has to take Nana for her errand runs,Thursday is skin bro's birthday and he wants to go to Longhorn which is over the Bourne Bridge so that's another full day and part of the evening gone,Friday Mom has to take Nana to the eye surgeon to see just why she's not seeing clearly as she should be and why she still has double vision! Mom is relying on my dad to help me out with my BOTM visits so I don't get far behind! I do hope he does a good job of it for me!
Wishing you a great day and I'm sending you all my love along with warm birdie hugs and soft beakie kisses! Love,Dixie
