I'd like to thank all the Green-Cheeked Conures here on the Bird Channel who have charmed my mom with their darling photos and stories about life; you are the ones who have convinced my mom that the McFlock was incomplete without the charm and cuteness of a little green guy like me.
When I suddenly found myself in the care of the Quad City Parrot Club rescue, I had no idea my mom was already looking for me. She wrote the coordinator and asked if I could be brought to the next parrot club meeting so that she and I might meet. When she arrived, I was already working the crowd, looking for the one with the softest heart. There were lots of them but when it was my mom's hand I jumped on, I knew right then I'd found the hand I longed to hold for the rest of my life. What a 'softie' she is too...

Hi! My name is KIRBY McFlockster

I am a Green-Cheeked Conure from M., IL.

Kirbster or K-Miester

7 years old   F

Green-Cheeked Conure

Most nuts and dried pineapple. At least that's my favorites right now.

I'm happy anywhere that my flockmates Zoren the Nanday and Jensen the Jenday are hanging out. At night I sleep behind the felt fringe that lines the top of my bird room. Of course my most favoritist spot is on mom's shoulder or better yet, the top of her head.

What's with the computer keyboard being off limits? Mom gets to touch it! Why can't I?

Mom saw the empty space on her shoulders as potentially wasted space since the larger birds in my flock don't normally sit there much. She saw just how well I'D fit there and fill the void. What's not to love about somebody that loves YOU.

When offered a morsel of food I first have to lean way back then knock the finger holding the food before actually taking the food. When over excited about the treat I sometimes pinch the hand that's feeding me. I've no idea where THAT comes from..

Love is great when you find someone to give it to..

  Hi Kirby!
I'm glad you liked your flowers and the bunny vase! I told the ladies at the flower shop to do something in pink with a bunny! hehehe!
I love that you live in a conure party! It must be fun to have so many conures around. I miss Scion a lot. And now I'm stuck with all these lovebirds flying around in the evenings for a few hours! I do complain to mom about them landing on my cage.

Our day started out with no electric! They were replacing and adding transformers around the corner from us. My parronts went to see the Insurgent movie and left us home! It was okay but mom liked the first movie better. She read all three books and she didn't like the second one much so maybe she didn't have high hopes for the second movie either. She still prefers Hunger Games.
It was very hot today. By the time my parronts got home, the electric was back on but it was 101F at our house! And you know we don't have a/c in our house. Fortunately, concrete houses remain quite cool inside on hot days so it wasn't too bad. Mom kept us indoors though since it was cooler than out on the porch. And she went swimming! It is cooling down tonite though and maybe it won't be so hot tomorrow! We do expect over 100k tourists to descend upon the coast starting tomorrow so things will be hopping around here. The blinking traffic light was put up today (the only one around here for miles). They put it up for holidays periods and summer. It is sort of the official sign that the spring break or summer break have begun! hehehe!
Have a nice evening! And I hope for no more eggs! It is shock enough to find out that you're a girl!
Love, Squeaks

  OMG, Miss Kirby!
Wow! That is really a huge surprise that you're a she instead of a he! Impressive! How are you feeling now? I feel so bad for you going through such a horrible time with the soft shell egg! I know your mom is taking the very best care of you! You are in good hands and chin cave!
Before i came to my forever home, i had fertilized eggs and raised babies with my fister. Mom was told my fister and i actually went through three male conures!!? I didn't lay any eggs with this family until mom thought i would like a happy hut about three years ago. Well, it made me too happy and i laid unfertilized eggs. Then she took the hut away and put an end to those thoughts. Everytime she gives me a hut, i aly eggs so no more huts. This year, she gave me Scions' corner porch, thinking in my older years (i will be 20 this year) i would enjoy a porch. Well, she put a piece of fleece on there with the idea to make it soft for me to sit on and it sure enough got me in the mood and i laid four eggs! I had one for a week or two that i took good care of and protected- it was on the bottom of my cage so i had to sit down there with the egg on the fleece. Then i laid a second egg. After a week with two eggs, i ignored them, dad removed them and that was that! The next day, a third popped out so it was propably in process when i gave up. Then for some reason, a few days after that, a fourth arrived! I totally had nothing to do with numbers 3 or 4 and they were promptly removed.
Probably the important thing about having eggs is to figure out what is stimulating you to have them, like for me it was the happy hut or even a piece of fleece. It may be the presence of a male GCC. Then you need to avoid the stimulus! I would think the eggstra calcium would help too even though you might think you are getting enough. And back rubs apparently are a huge stimulus.
I am really glad everything turned out ok for you. I know that must have been a terribly scary and ouchy experience, one to be avoided again. You are lucky to have your mom and she is lucky to have you! And congrats on being a girl! Big hugs and lots of love! And don't scare your mom or me anymore!
Love you to pieces! Squeaky

We are celebrating the 50th Anniversary of "THE SOUND OF MUSIC". Dad saw it when he was very little with his Dad, Sister and Friends.
Later, in the 70s he saw it again in the theater on a gigantic screen.

Although the film is still fun on the television, there is nothing like the majesty of the mountains and the music of the movie when seen BIG.

  Flitzer Final February Post
THE LOST ART OF THE INTERMISSION:
.
For many years, longer films were planned with Intermisisons. the story would take a dramatic pause, the music would swell, and the audience got to take a break to use the bathrooms, visit the Refreshment Stand etc.
--
I always loved the Intermission music. Often in the older theaters, curtains would dramatically close on the Intermission, and slowly open when Part 2 began.
--
Nowadays we're forced to sit for 2 1/2, 3 hrs or more without a break.
[The Lord of the Rings films are good examples - they are long, involved, and you're lost if you had to take a break away from the screen].

Even revivals of older films will skip right over the Intermission - forcing you to shift in your seat - and hold it in for another extended period of time - ~ugh~
--
Unfortunately, after paying the high ticket-prices we need to *er* …"step away" from the film for a few minutes, missing possibly something interesting.
--
Theater owners are always conscious of how many showings they can fit in per day, but I say BRING BACK THE INTERMISSION. People *will* spend more for refreshments, and not have to miss any of the movie.
--
Upcoming 'Bird-of-the-Month' Candidates:
.
[I’m awaiting confirmation on this information]

APR FOR MAY - MIKEY D - 247164

Dad's Special Movie Memory:
As kids we would get to a movie theater once in a while. Mostly for a Kids Matinee.
We almost never visited the Refreshment Stand. There was one special time which was an exception.
Dad was treated to a special movie with his Mom. They went without the rest of the family -and It was an evening showing, She even bought him popcorn. Can't recall if it was a Birthday or whatever - just that it was a special night.

The film was "MARY POPPINS", which, ever since has been a special movie for Dad.

We spoke earlier this month about how a few notes of music can make a movie-memory come sweeping back. Any music from ‘Mary Poppins’ makes Dad think of that special Movie Night with his Mom.

  Flitzer on Winners and Classics
Kiddo raised an interesting topic: Films that did Not win The Academy Award for 'Best Picture', but they are now classics, many times surpassing the Oscar-winning film.
--
in the Awards Game there has to be a winner, and losers. There will be endless discussion as to outcomes, but only time makes a film a true Classic.
A couple of examples:
--
The Year: 1941. The Oscar-Winning film, "How Green was My Valley" [a personal favorite and a wonderful film], but the nominee that did not get the award was "Citizen Kane" which many feel is one of the Greatest Films Ever Made.
--
The Year: 1952. The Oscar-Winning Film, "The GreatestShow on Earth"
...same year as "High noon" and "The Quiet Man"
--
The Year: 2005. The Oscar-Winning Film, "Crash"
...same year as "Brokeback Mountain", a film which many consider a Classic.
= = =
Will this year's winner, "Birdman", remain considered the Best of the year?
or will “American Sniper”, "Boyhood" or even "The Grand Budapest Hotel" be remembered...only time will tell.

  Flitzer Wednesday Thoughts . . .
Still in "Recovery-Mode" from Hollywood's Big Night.

--
Some of you BirdChannel friends have expressed that they don't watch The Oscars.
Dad doesn't really like the Hollywood Glamor-thing and some of the industry politics,
but we do love movies.
--
Often we are disappointed with what films and actors win the awards. That is all a part of the game. We often look back on past years with a knowing smirk, realizing that the movies we liked best that year are the ones that are still being watched and appreciated.
--
All that being said, we do like tuning in that one night a year, when Hollywood goes all-out and celebrates the talent, work and yes, the tackiness of The Hollywood Movie Machine.
