Hello every birdie, it is SKY with this weeks SPOTLIGHT on CARING with my goofy, fun loving buddies Polly, and Zippy and their Momma Karen
SKY; When did you first become interested in birds? How did you become a bird owner?
Momma Karen; My grandmother had a pair of budgies that she allowed free in the house when I was young. They would go to her and 'talk' with her, imitate and call the outdoor birds. Grandma also fed the outdoor birds and would have jays and other birds sit on her as she offered them seeds. Seeing the different birds going to her is what started my interest.
Sky; Please tell us all, when did you first join Bird Channel? Polly; Momma joined B.C. in 2008.

SKY; How are you involved with birds in general? Momma Karen; I just talk about birds all the time in the various social settings I find myself in.
Sky; Momma Karen, could you tell us about the birds in your life, both past & present?
Momma Karen ;As a child I had a budgie that I had purchased from a dime store. Somehow it ended up with mites, I think. This was back in the 1960s, so there was no vet care and I was very ignorant. The poor thing died when I was on vacation with my family. He was well tended by the before mentioned grandmother. After my 5th human child, the family wanted a pet. Friends were breeding budgies at that time and gave us one for me taking care of the birds (and mice, and rabbits) while they were on vacation. I learned about the sensitivity of their breathing with this one. I moved our 'pet' back into the family space too soon after spraying for lice—we were having great difficulty getting rid of lice. About the time Orion died, Loki was hatched. The same friends let us have a 'replacement'. Still learning about avian vets, Loki lived for 8 years, but died because of a tumor. We had not found an avian vet.

Widget's toe
Widget has cut her toe somehow. We have some wooden perches that look like tree branches and I think she may have cut herself on one of the ends. I removed the dowel and put in a different kind of perch. I was prepared to put some cornstarch on the toe, but it was scabbed over so she is okay.

Breakfast cup
Widget jumped right into her breakfast cup this morning. As soon as she saw me putting it in there she let out a chirp and went right for it. I've never seen her do that before. Must be Spring!

I hope Mom & Dad enjoyed the flower show. This time of year it would be so nice to see all the blooms and smell the fresh flowers. It is sunny but cool today. We heard on the news it is to be milder this week coming so most of the snow will be gone. I can't wait. I am not a snow person any more.
We demand our snacks every day but Momma Deb has a hard time finding a bird sitter to watch us for a day. The last time we did have one the sitter did a very bad job and some of he baby birds in the nests died because she forgot to feed the parents. Momma Deb said she'll never go away again unless she can find someone dependable. I guess we are too much for most people.
Momma is down sizing but we still have about 200 birds here at present. Momma bred birds for 35+ years, mostly Budgies like you, lovebirds and Conures. She says at 50+ she is too old to keep on keepin' on so she is placing the breeders into pet homes. She is careful where they go so it is a slow process. Means more time for us bigger guys.
Well, I better get Momma going on my snacks. She's slow today.

Watering plants
Winston and Widget always seem to have a running commentary when I come to water plants in their room. Their chattering sounds like the running water. Heh.

getting there on the plants
The plants that went outdoors for the summer are coming back in bit by bit. Widget and Winston are very happy about having 'their' plants back in the room. Must make them feel like their 'down under' again!

Chattering up a storm

Noisy mornings
Widget has been acting up every morning. I wonder what it is. She sure is excited about something. Maybe its the crows outside. They've been pretty noisy too.

quiet morning
Over the week-end all the plants in Widget and Winston's room got moved outside as is the case every year. There are only a few staghorn ferns that stay in there and a few tillandsias. Not much. So it was very quiet this morning from the budgies. They must notice the difference. Don't worry, little ones, the plants will be back there at the end of the summer!

Chattering away
Yesterday it got up to 95 degrees here in the Northeast. Way too hot, way too early. It sure was humid in the budgie room with all the plants. Widget and Winston loved it though. They must have thought they were back in Australia! They were chattering away like crazy.

The whole flock has new pictures, me and Bella got the most new pictures though! hehe!

Some of you said you couldn't get to mommy's website. Just copy this, http://prettybirdpaintings.webs.com/ Maybe they just forgot to put .webs.com, and only put .com.:)

Oh, I almost forgot to everyone but mommy deleted the Pretty as a Parrot Art Studio page. She doesn't get orders from there any more and even if she did, she's doing to many paintings and wouldn't have time.

Name Songs~
Mommy said Weasley loved when she read Harry Potter to her, and every time she said Ron Weasley, Weasley would look right at her. So she started singing songs like, The B-I-B-L-E, or and Bingo was his name-o, but with our names! Birds love hearing their names.:)

Make Meal Time, Fun Time~
This will keep your bird entertained while they eat. Cut paper into long strips, and the cut the strips in half and put them on the of your birds food. Your bird will have fun digging through the paper!

I like this, but the keets don't.

Thanks for the update! We finally got on BC tonight!!! Mom and Bree (one of the rehabilitators) chased a wren around the avian nursery today! Mom was sure glad when they caught it! Spring is coming soon we think. Around here during Lent, it seems every church has a Friday fish fry. One of them has baked fish, too, so that's where mom likes to go. Hugs, Gizmo

Commentary on watering
Widget always has to have a running commentary on my watering techniques. The back room of the house is filled with all kinds of plants and every day, something needs to get watered back there. And Widget is quiet until I start watering and then its non-stop chatter until I'm done. Pretty funny. At least that back room is really humid and that helps Winston's feathers alot.

Thanks, and congratulations on Babette getting her title! That's impressive, a trophy for obedience. Mom says all of us are works in progress, but especially Daisy is! She is looking for a class where she can take both dogs at once so they learn leash manners together. Polly is excellent at walking on leash, but Daisy treats it as time to play and have her playmate really close by. Hugs, Giz

How did the competition go for the dogs? We're doing a quick c/p today if mom can keep her hands off the keyboard. The milonga was a blast last night, even though the auction lasted a long time. What a great view from the window. We watched a blue jay's nest from ours a few years ago.
Happy Valentine's Day! Hope you celebrate with someone special. We will all be together today, Mom, the dogs, and the 6 of us birds, so we'll have a wonderful day.
Daisy is still a work in progress, she's still working on Leave It, but usually when we're flapping in our cages or yelling real loud. Other than that, she is pretty good at ignoring us. Polly is getting used to having a little sister too.

It's scary to do dark toenails! Mom always has them done at the center where she volunteers, and the girls are always careful with Falco's dark nails. I bet finches have tiny nails, though, and that would be harder. Glad Zena's trim went well. Hugs, Willie

Wow, your dad wrote that article? It's really good! Mom grows some herbs indoors, but this is inspiring her to do more.
Would you believe it's close to 50 today? This is freakish for January! Mom is worried, because this was already a year without acorns in the fall, and if this weather keeps up, who knows what else will be affected? We sent mom and Polly off to see a dog this morning, but when she got to the shelter (where she was told to come!), the dog was at the vet's getting neutered, and they told her that he was dog aggressive. Mom mentioned Polly on the phone, and they told her to bring Polly to meet him! What a waste! Well, the dog hunt continues... Hugs, Gizmo

We didn't get online yesterday, except to vote for Roscoe, so we hope your Christmas was a wonderful one, and that you got everything you hoped for. We had fun giving out gifts, and seeing what Santa left in our stockings, too. I'll try to talk more later this week, but mom will be working at the museum and center all week long. That was a funny story, I hope Tessa liked her time out of the cage. Mom has given up on the great dog search until after the holidays, she'll try maybe next week to see if we can find one. Meanwhile, she's getting kind of used to having one dog. Baking is moving right along, we should be done soon. Mom is going out with her sister today to find a few choice food items for Christmas eve, which her sister hosts every year. We used to do it here, but her house is bigger, and she has a working fireplace. Hugs, Gizmo

That's a lot of seed!
Well, the baking is mostly done. Mom still has buckeyes to do, and chocolate chip and sugar cookies to bake, but the hard stuff is finished! We woke up to snow on the ground this morning! YUCK! Guess it was too much to hope that warmer weather would keep it away.

Thanks for the compliment. I try to be a good bird. I'm going to be quick today, I think mom is ready to grab Polly and head out to find a dog. There's an old gal on the Humane Society's website that she's interested in. She's 9, and a Lhasa Apso mix. Mom always thinks that the old ones are the ones nobody wants to adopt. Our budgies are kept in a separate cage, they can play around each other with supervision....but not gentle like budgies!

Thanks for flying by. That's interesting about your Mom's name matching ours. Pearl has a ring of white around the neck area, like a string of pearls so that's how his name came about. Silver was just named for his color and also to match the jewelry type name of Pearl. At the time Mom did not know that there were 'tiel mutations called Pearl and Silver. Think the pearl mutation is common, but hardly ever hear of people having a silver mutation 'tiel.

Wasn't sure which of your flock fly by, but your name's first in the list so here we are. It's nice to meet you. Is it cold there in CT? We are coolish today due to the wind, but it is sunny.
