Please bless all my birdy friends and especially to those who just came out of surgery and are recooperating. Please bless those young and old birdies who are ill or are not feeling well, as you are the great physician in the sky and can heal all.   Hi Pookie & Laka
Hello everybirdie, Zeena here to start this week with one of the worlds most well known Parrots. Today we stop to visit the Senegal Parrots and their mutations. I wish to thank you all for your greyt support and daily votes in my quest to earn the Title of Bird of the Month for August.
Over the last 30 years as many as 3 million wild Senegal parrots have been removed from the wild – 811,408 CITES Export permits have been issued since 1975. Unregulated trade in African parrots peaked in the 1980s and ’90s, and still exists today. This lucrative black market industry is fueled by profiteering middlemen who exploit wild bird populations. In 2005, the Senegal parrot was the most traded bird on the CITES Appendix II, with an average of over 45,000 individuals being removed from the wild each year. Today, African parrots remain among the most traded species on earth.
The Poicephalus parrots, including Senegals, Red-bellied and Myers etc are among the hardiest parrots on earth being able to survive in the harsh, African subtropics. All of their ranges are under serious pressure from the booming charcoal industry, out-of-control commercial logging , burning by local people for pastures and agriculture, as well as climate change. Deforestation rates on the continent are now twice that of the rest of the world. Africa has lost one half of its old-growth forests and forest restoration has become absolutely essential to save endemic forest bird species.
Long-lived forest specialists like Senegal parrots and rose-ringed parakeets are particularly sensitive to forest degradation. The added pressure of the wild-caught bird trade is often catastrophic, resulting in local extinctions in many Africa countries. Meyer’s parrots have all but disappeared from South Africa, African grey parrots are no longer seen in Kenya or Tanzania, Ruppell’s parrot and the brown-headed parrot have disappeared from much of their ranges in Namibia and Mozambique respectively, and the Cape parrot is only found in small forest refuges in the high mountains. Anyone who has traveled by road in Africa will tell you that every time you are in or near a forest you will start seeing parrots in cages or with their feet tied up on the roadside. Africa is exporting its parrots, its wildlife, its birdlife, its natural heritage,at alarming rates.
The Senegal Parrot is now extinct in many of it's ranges. The only way to stop this trade in wild-caught Parrots is to refuse to purchase birds that are not born in captivity.
Many devoted Senegal breeders have been working with a few unique mutations that have appeared in nestboxes starting in the early 1990's. These rare and beautiful mutations are still expensive and normally available only to other breeders, they include the yellow, pied, opaline, dilute and cinnamon. Regardless of color Senegal Parrots will remain one of the most common family pet birds kept the world over.

agrees with Pookie about the girls hearing about their quite amazing suspenseful day with fishkin!Even though they lost the big big fish, they sure had the time of their lives together, with all the eggcitement of trying not to drown and losing Pookie's new graphite fishkin pole! Both the big big fish and the new graphite fishkin pole are gone together some where in the ocean! Both Dixie and Pookie,so famished from all their adventures with the fishkin eggcitement can't stop eating, its like they have a bottomless pit of a stomach! OOOOHHHH!These sandwiches and the juice are just soooo goood!Dixie tells Pookie in between big beakfuls of sandwich,Mama Ruthie sure can make the best sandwiches ever and the tastiest too!Dixie closes his eyes and looking up at the sky and all the puffy white clouds so serene in the sky, points out to Pookie that he thought he saw both their fisters in a silhouette in a cloud formation! Not in any hurry to get back or to leave this peaceful spot, after eating and getting their tummies full, both boys lay completely back in the soft sand and under the warming sun they fall asleep......

a huge wave rolls up and getting larger and larger with each push from the ocean it heads directly to where Pookie is struggling in the water, trying hard to hang onto his fishkin pole and balance on the large fish that's dragging him ever so quickly across the top of the water leaving sprays spewing out on either side of him!Dixie watching the wave rolling closer and closer and getting larger and larger,Pookie trying to balance himself on the fish and trying hard not to fall off and go under, hurriedly casts out his pole for Pookie to catch hold of so he won't be carried to who knows where by that fish when suddenly and as fast as lightening the giant wave comes down on both of them, separating them in the water, both screaming and trying to hang onto their fishkin poles for dear life and yet stay afloat and not go under but the fish is still attached to Pookie and now Dixie who somehow got tangled when the wave hit!Trying to figure out how to get free of their wild ride,Pookie shouts out........

  Hi Pookie
Hi everyone, Zeena, here with your Sunday BOTM POST. I want to take a moment to thank you all for all your support and votes during this month's BOTM campaign. Today, we will visit with some unique and usual Budgie mutations. Known by many names, Parakeet, Budgie, and officially Budgerigars. these fun-loving, friendly members of the avian family are loved the world over.

Feather Dusters
Feather Dusters are a rare mutation produced solely at random, mostly among English Budgies. These birds are huge compared to other budgies and have abnormally growing, very long feathers. As the name implies they do look rather like the feather dusters used for dusting furniture. They must eat constantly to try and supply their bodies with the nutrients they need because of the heavy demand put on them by the constant feather growth. They generally don't live more than a few months, cannot fly, and are usually blind. They are also thought to be deaf and may even be afflicted with what is known in humans as Down's Syndrome.

Half Siders

Half-Siders a randomly occurring rare mutation in which the bird is split right down the middle with each half representing a different color or variety. One side may be blue and one half green, one half normal and the other half pied, etc. When one of these is at a show, you can tell exactly where it is in the room because of all of the people standing in front of the cage doing double takes. As they say, you have to see it to believe it. Quarter-Siders, in which only one quarter of the body is affected, also occur.

CRESTED

In this variety, the feathers on top of the budgie's head point awry, forming a crest.
There are three types of crested budgies: full-circular crest, half-circular crest and the tufted crest.
Crested Budgies are both a random occurring mutation, and one for which breeders can breed to produce them. They are relatively rare and sell for upwards of $100US each and more depending on crest.
Helicopter Budgies

These unusual Budgies are bred to produce long, silkie feathers at the shoulder and upper wing margins. The more complete the covering the higher the quality and price. They are especially popular in Japan and Asia where pairs can sell for up to $55,000US

struggling to reel in his catch, tries turning the reel and it seems to be getting very hard to turn, twisting his body this way and that to accommodate for some leverage and digging his heels into the ground for a better grip, wraps his wings tighter around his pole!Pookie watching him from the sides of his eyes trying to manage his line, has just felt a pull on his line also and is busy trying to reel that one that he caught in!Bells on both poles are ringing and Pookie is starting to wonder just what it is that they both have on the ends of their lines! Both Pookie and Dixie are having the challenge of their lives just trying to hang onto their poles and not to be dragged into the water with the strong pull of what is caught on their lines!Pookie!Dixie yells, this thing whatever it is is going to be taking me into the water with it!Pookie his eyes big replies back to Dixie.......

  Hello Pookie~
I hope you had a wonderful day. It was a pretty nice one here. We had some computer problems but mom ran a scan and it all seems to be running okay now.
I spent the day supervising chores and playing with toys. Dad is home and he is a bit messy. There is of course tons of laundry stacked in the living room! Really kind of boring around here but that is just fine by me!
Mom did the market thing early today since dad had 2 doctor appointments. He has to squeeze them all in when he is home. I don't know when he is going to go back out on the road.
Enjoy the evening and I do hope it's perfect!
Love, hugs and a vote ~ Sugar

"Laka, what do you say we go to the movies fater we leave the Spa? I hear there's a real good love story playing right now."
Laka grins happily as she nods her agreement.
"Oh look" Little Angel points to a sign hung outside a store. The sign offers great deals on bathing suits.
"Come on, let's go see what they have." Little Angel pulls Laka behind her by the wing tip
"Woow, look at all those different colored suits. All sorts of designs too." Laka holds up a pretty light blue bikini.

  Hi Pookie & Laka
Hi everyone, Happy TGIF. Today we will make a stop in India to visit a strange looking member of the avian world. The Wreathed Hornbill. These majestic birds are seen in Zoos and private collector's aviaries. The Wreathed Hornbill , also known as the Bar-pouched Wreathed Hornbill, is a species of Hornbill found in forests from far north-eastern India and Bhutan, east and south through mainland south-east Asia and the Greater Sundas, except Sulawesi. The Wreathed Hornbill is a large (4-8 pounds) black bird with a yellowish tail, red eyes, and a long, thick beak topped with a small 'wreathed' casque with up to 9 ridges. The male has a bright yellow inflatable throat pouch, while the female's is blue. It is suggested that the casque, which has a spongy hollow core, may serve as a resonating chamber for its harsh barking call, as a form of species recognition, and/or to convey health status. The first two cervical vertebrae are fused to help their neck support the extra weight of the large bill. Their 2nd and 3rd toes are partially fused to help them better grasp tree branches. Using droppings, mud, and fruit pulp, the female hornbill is renowned for walling itself into tree hollows for up to 41/2 months while nesting. The female leaves only a small slit through which its mate must pass all needed foodstuffs until their babies fledge.
The wreathed hornbill is an omnivorous feeder, eating mostly fruit. The male, however, will feed small animals such as bats, reptiles, frogs, crabs, and insects to the females and developing chicks. It can find food from the treetops to the forest floor as well as in water.
Captive breeding the Wreathed Hornbill is difficult but successful once specific requirements are provided. This species is intelligent and sensitive to change and it takse longer to form pairs; young males are vulnerable to bullying by older females; heated accommodation are absolutely necessary and a higher protein diet is needed for them to rear their chicks successfully. These and several other factors make them more difficult to maintain and breed compared to their African counterparts.
Chicks, when available sell to private breeders, and collectors for thousands of dollars each. This fact and their need for massive flights makes them unsuitable except for serious experienced collectors/breeders.
Tomorrow, we once more take a peak inside a nest box to discover what new is hatching inside.

  Hi Pookie & Laka
Hello everyone, Zeena here with a special tribute to my frother Lupe'. Lupe' left us recently after he sustained severe injuries to his feet by another bird. Rest in peace, "Momma's Special Boy! I love you forever!"
Today's special Parrot is the Tucaman Amazon. This post was very difficult for me to write.

The Tucumán Amazon (Amazona tucumana) is native to Northern Argentina where it is found in the provinces of Tucumán, Salta and Jujuy as well as Southeast Bolivia in provinces of Chuquisaca and Tarija. They prefer forested areas between 3,400 and 7,300 ft; but may migrate to lower altitudes in autumn and winter. They inhabit woodland areas . The main concentrations of this species in Bolivia occur in Montes Chapeados, Villa Serrano and Tariquía Flora and Fauna National Reserve, with 1,643 individuals recorded at various sites during a recent study) A dedicated national population census and monitoring initiative is required to provide an accurate estimate of the Bolivian population and to locate, measure and monitor local populations and post-breeding roosts.

The Tucumán Amazon is a mostly green, short tailed parrot 31 cm (12 in) long. The green feathers of the upper-body have black margins. There is red plumage on the forehead and fore-crown, and the red does not extend around the white eye-rings. It has red primary wing feathers and no red at the bend of the wing. It has orange thighs and red at the base of the green tail. They have a horn colored beak, orange-yellow irises, and pinkish-grey legs. The male and female are identical.

This species is classified as Vulnerable as it is experiencing a rapid population decline owing to habitat loss and capture for the cage bird trade. On the CITES APPENDIX 1 trade is now illegal, but in Country trade has not been enforced. These rather plain individuals were not of primary concern to breeders when imports were allowed owing to their low ability to learn human speech. Therefore there is a limited gene pool of breeding lines available worldwide.

Lupe'; bold, protective and gentle. An awesome and devoted pet. Limited in speech he made it up in love, entertaining antics and personality. If protective measures are not put into place in their wild habitat, these gems of the Amazon family will disappear.

Fly free little frother, we all miss you, but we will see you again!

  Hi Pookie & Laka
Hi everybirdie. Zeena here today with another very unique and endangered bird that is fighting for survival .The Nicobar Pigeon.
The Nicobar pigeon (Caloenas nicobarica) is a pigeon found on small islands and in coastal regions from the Nicobar Islands, east through the Malay Archipelago, to the Solomons and Palau. It is the only living member of the genus Caloenas. They drink water without having to raise their heads in the process; their chicks are helpless at birth but develop at an amazing pace . What is more, they forage for fruits of plants that have evolved with them the entire time. The Nicobar is planning and planting forests as they forge and eat.

It is a large pigeon, measuring 18-22 inches in length. The head is grey, like the upper neck plumage, which turns into green and copper hackles towards the breast. The breast is grey. The tail is very short and pure white. The rest of its plumage is metallic green. The cere of the dark bill forms a small blackish knob; the strong legs and feet are dull red. The iris is dark. Females are slightly smaller and less colorful.

The Nicobar pigeon roams in flocks from island to island, sleeping on offshore islets where no predators occur and spends the day in areas with better food availability,. Its food consists of seeds, fruit and buds, and it is attracted to areas where grain is available. A gizzard stone helps to grind up hard food items. Its flight is quick. Unlike other pigeons groups fly in columns or single file, not in a loose flock. The white tail is prominent in flight when seen from behind . The young birds' lack of a white tail is a signal of their immaturity clearly visible to an adult Nicobar pigeon, it is obvious at a glance which flockmembers are neither potential mates, nor potential competitors for mates.

This species nests in dense forest on offshore islets, often in large colonies. It builds a loose stick nest in a tree. It lays one elliptical faintly blue-tinged white egg.

Nicobar pigeons are hunted in considerable numbers for food, and also for their gizzard stone which is used in jewelry. The species is also trapped for the local pet market, but as it is on CITES Appendix I, such trade is generally illegal. Internationally, captive breeding is able to supply the birds demanded by zoos, where this attractive and unusual bird is often seen. Direct exploitation of the species, including the illegal trade, might be sustainable on its own; however, its available nesting habitat is decreasing. The offshore islets which it requires are often logged for plantations, destroyed by construction ,or polluted by nearby industry. Also, increased travel introduced predators to the breeding sites, and colonies of the Nicobar pigeon may be driven to desert such locations or be destroyed outright. There is an estimated 1,000 adult birds remaining, its long-term future is increasingly being jeopardized.

  Hi Pookie & Laka
July 15th BOTM POST
Hello everyone, Zeena here with today's topic. The African Grey Mutations. Please note that all mutations occur spontaneously. A hybrid is made by combining two species from the same family group. Mutations do occur in the wild, but often fail to survive due tot heir coloration making them easy prey.
Several mutations occur naturally in the wild, like the F2 Pied Mutation, which results in a broad red band across the abdomen. 1998 saw the first created Grey mutation when South African bird breeder Von van Antwerpen and New Zealand partner Jaco Bosman selected F2 Pieds and created the first red African Grey. These early red pigmented Greys sold for more then $250,000 US each. Since the early 1990s red-factored Greys were being caught in the wild and sold to breeders who in turn attempted to propagate the coloration. This first red baby saw the beginning of a number of spontaneous mutations occurring all around the world.
Today there are a large number of beautiful, rare mutations available to breeders and collectors. Each mutation possesses the same personality traits, intelligence and healthy composure as their normal Grey relatives. Although some argue that mutation breeding weakens the lines, to date this has not proven to be true, since these mutations occur from F1-2 generation parents, and often from visually normal grey parents who carry the mutation coloring.
Today we will stop and take a look at several of the more common, and some fairly new and uncommon mutations available. Each has it's merits, and following. It takes many years and generations to stabilize a new mutation to breed true-to-type. Dedicated breeders work hard to breed the strongest, healthiest birds from the chosen mutations. The road to success it wroth with pit-falls and disappointments, but the desire to perpetuate their selected mutations makes it a labor of love to continue onwards.
Most of the mutations shown today in the gallery are unavailable to the public. Those that are sell from $5000 to over $150,000US each. I hope you enjoy seeing these beautiful birds, some for the very first time.

  Hi Pookie & Laka
July 14th BOTM POST
Hello everybirdie, Zeena here to start of this week with a visit to one of the planet's wonders in the avian field. It was a special request from our dear friend Mr. Kiddo. We need to be very quiet as we visit these unique and highly endangered gems of the bird world. I wish to thank everyone for their votes and input.
The kakapo (Maori: kakapo, night parrot), also called owl parrot, is a species of large, flightless, nocturnal, ground-dwelling parrot of the super-family Strigopoidea found only in New Zealand. It has finely blotched yellow-green plumage, a distinct facial disc of sensory, vibrissa-like feathers, a large grey beak, short legs, large feet, and wings and a tail of relatively short length. A combination of traits make it unique among its kind; it is the world's only flightless parrot, the heaviest parrot, nocturnal, herbivorous, visibly sexually dimorphic in body size, has a low basal metabolic rate, no male parental care, and is the only parrot to have a polygynous breeding system. It is also possibly one of the world's longest-living birds. Its anatomy typifies the tendency of a bird's evolution on oceanic islands, with few predators and abundant food: a generally robust physique, quick movement efficiency at the expense of flight abilities & reduced wing muscles, . Like many other New Zealand bird species, the kakapo was historically important to the Maori, the indigenous people of New Zealand. It was hunted and used for both for its meat as a food source and for its feathers . It was also kept as a pet.
The Kakapo lays one to three eggs in a ground concave usually only raising one or two chicks per breeding season. The species is in a critically endangered position due to poaching, habitat distraction and the introduction of predators such as feral cats. Man's infringement on their breeding territory is causing a drastic and rapid decrease in numbers with only 6 chicks in 2012 surviving to maturity. A key part of the Recovery Plan is the supplementary feeding of females. The kakapo breeds only once every two to five years, when the Dacrydium cupressinum (rimu), produces protein-rich fruit and seeds. Observations of the relationship between intermittent breeding and the plant's mast year help biologists choose which suitable supplementary foods to increase kakapo breeding frequency. In 1989, six preferred foods (apples, sweet potatoes, almonds, Brazil nuts, sunflower seeds and walnuts) were supplied to 12 feeding stations. Males and females ate the supplied foods, and females nested on Little Barrier Island in the summers of 1989–91 for the first time since 1982, although nesting success was low. In March 2014, with the kakapo population having increased to 126, it sits on the verge of extinction. As man's awareness of their plight becomes known it is hoped that Conservation efforts will see a greater success in breeding these wonders of the Parrot World.

  Hi Pookie
Hello to all my BC friends, Zeena here with today's BOTM POST/ Today we stop for a visit in New Zealand's lush forests to meet the endangered, but beautiful New Zealand Pigeon. Thank you to all who shared their feelings regarding the cross species Galah Too and Cockatiel. The hatching of this specimen may answers years of debt over the relationship between Cockatoos and Cockatiel.

The New Zealand pigeon, arboreal fruit-pigeon found in forests from Northland to Stewart Island/Rakiura, ranging in habitats from coastal to mountainous .[6 The general morphology is that of a typical pigeon, in that it has a relatively small head, a straight soft-based bill and loosely attached feathers. It also displays typical pigeon behaviour, which includes drinking by suction, a wing-threat display, hitting with the wing when threatened, a diving display flight, a 'bowing' display, ritualized preening and 'billing' during courtship. New Zealand pigeons build flimsy, shallow, twiggy nests and feed crop milk to hatchlings.

The mainland New Zealand pigeon grows to some 51 centimetres (20 in) in length and 650 grams (23 oz) in weight, compared to 55 centimetres (22 in) and 800 grams (28 oz) for the Chatham Island variant.[8] The head, throat and wings are generally a shiny green-purple colour, but with a bronze tinge to the feathers. The breast is typically white and the bill red with an orange tip. The feet and eyes are red. Juveniles have a similar coloration but are generally paler with dull colours for the beak, eyes and feet and a shorter tail.

The New Zealand Pigeon breeds in spring and fall, dependent on the availability of fruit, especially figs. They eat both the fruit and leaves as well as flowers from several species of trees, and plants.New Zealand pigeons nest in trees, laying a single egg, in a flimsy nest constructed of a few twigs thrown together. The egg is incubated for 28–29 days and the young bird takes another 30–45 days to fledge. In seasons of plentiful fruit the pigeons can successfully nest up to four times.

The Department of Conservation is involved in educating the public about the plight of the New Zealand pigeon and encouraging local initiatives to save it. In Northland, the Department has been working with local iwi in an attempt to curb illegal poaching by educating young Maori about the disastrous effect this activity is having on the birds' survival rate. On the Chatham Islands, landowners have helped protect the habitat by creating reserves and fencing remnant bush to keep out stock. Numbers have recovered from a low of about 40 birds in the 1980s to around 250 in 2005.

July 12th BOTM POST
Hi everybirdie Zeena here with an interesting article we encountered while studying on the various Cockatoo species. Real or Hoax? We look for your thoughts on this. I know Spot Le' Blaze-atiel will be happy, it gives hope to him with his fiancee Miss Puffin.
HYBRID parrots are nothing new, with various matings occurring over the years, some deliberate, some accidental.

But the latest hybrid that I’ve come across is really incredible, with the environment and the circumstances under which it was bred truly amazing.
Nikki, who lives in New South Wales, has bred a galah-cockatiel cross, which as far as I can ascertain is a world first. She had a 12-year-old male galah in an aviary with five female cockatiels and six male cockatiels. Three pairs of cockatiels were breeding happily and Nikki got the shock of her life when she walked past the cage one day and saw a decidedly different-looking bird sitting on a perch.
“It was a young bird and obviously a cross between the galah and a light yellow coloured six-year-old cockatiel, with the parent birds definitely bonded and together all the time,” she said.

“The young bird is around 25 per cent larger than a cockatiel, with a galah’s body shape that’s grey all over.

“He has an orange galah-style crest, dusty orange chest, deep orange cheek patches, with wings more like a cockatiel in colour but the shape of a galah’s wings.” Joseph Forshaw, the world renowned parrot expert and author of the classic Australian Parrots book, said he had never heard of a galah crossing with a cockatiel anywhere in the world.

“I have never heard of a cockatiel crossing with anything, although I have heard of people trying to cross them with other parrots,” Mr Forshaw said.

He said "recent DNA tests had indicated that cockatiels are related to Australia’s black cockatoos. I guess the fact that the cockatiel has bred with a member of the cockatoo family proves conclusively that it is a part of that family,”

Avian vet Tim Oldfield was skeptical when told of the mutation, but changed his tune when shown the photo. “I have to admit it looks exactly like a cockatiel galah cross, quite amazing,” he said.

The woman who bred the bird took it inside to hand-feed it, intending to make it a pet.

“He’s very quiet and friendly and I’ve been offered $15,000 for him, but people have told me he’s worth a lot more because he’s the only one in the world,” she said. “Three of the logs were used by the cockatiels and the other box was used by the parents of the hybrid baby,” she said."The logs are impossible for a Galah to fit inside easily. There is no other explanation to his appearance in the aviary.

If this indeed is a true cross, it answers many questions of the relationship of our Cockatoo species to the Cockatiels. Whether the baby is fertile and able to reproduce was not indicated. article from 2006.

  Hi Pookie & Laka
Hello again, it is Zeena with today's BOTM post. Today we head into Bolivia to take a look at the last remaining wild Red-Fronted Macaws. This is a special request from my good friend, the very handsome Mr. Cappy. ( Don't tell him I said that or I won't hear the end of it. LOL). Cappy's beautiful fister Dory is a Red-Fronted Macaw so this will be of interest to her especially.

Red Fronted macaws, Ara rubrogenys, are the smallest of the large macaws. Fairly rare and therefore not well-known, Red Fronted macaws are olive green with bright red on their foreheads, ear coverts, shoulders and socks. Their under-wings are flames of red, orange and yellow. They have teal colored feathers in their wings and tails. One thing to note is that Red Fronted Macaws have a bare patch of skin around the eye but lack the bare cheek patch of the large macaws. Red Fronts are generally around 24 inches in length and weigh between 450 and 550 grams. Their wingspans are generally 32 to 34 inches. Red Fronted macaws are considered to be one of the large macaws. They have a body the size of a medium to large Amazon parrot with a longer pointed tail. Considered by many to be the ideal size of macaw, they are fun loving and make wonderful pets. Red Fronted macaws can become excellent talkers and are quite the comedians. They are not dominant birds.
They are extremely affectionate, intelligent, playful, gentle spirits fids with graceful, moderately sized bodies.
Within their natural range, their numbers have been decimated by and there are now less then 1000 wild individuals, some have counted only 150 total. They are being pushed to extinction by;
.loss of habitat due to conversion of their habitat to agriculture and because of intense grazing;
. harvesting of the nut and fruit trees that provide an important food source.

ingestion of pesticides applied to crops; or deliberately baited food set out for them.
illegal trapping for the pet market.

However, they have been doing quite well in captivity and are reproducing successfully. Even though one can't consider them "common" - domestic-bred birds can usually be found.

Range and habitat

The Red-fronted Macaw is native to a small mountainous area of south-central Bolivia situated about 200 km west of Santa Cruz, in the department of the same name, where the climate is medium altitude semi-desert. The natural vegetation consists mostly of cactus (large and small) and thorny trees and scrub. The climate is semi arid with cold nights and hot days. Rain comes in infrequent heavy storms. It is unusual in that it is the only macaw to inhabit such a climatic zone. Most macaws nest in holes in large trees, however here there are no very large trees in its range so it nests in vertical fissures in cliff faces.

Immediate action is required to stop the Red-Fronted Macaws falling to the same fate as the Spix Macaws

July 11th BOTM POST
Hello to all my BC friends. Zeena here today to take a peek into some nestboxes around the world, and take a look at some of the amazing Amazon mutations being bred today. Please note that most are not currently available to the public. Some of these awesome finds are selling for as much as 125,000US each to breeders.
One day these new color mutations will be found in pet homes as newer mutations occur. Their unique beauty and charm is well worth the look. I hope you will enjoy them as much as I have. There are several renowned pioneers in color mutation breeding working in the USA in conjunction with international breeders.r Howard Voren is one such dedicated breeder. He has specialized in mutation breeding in several species with great success. All pictures show "pure" mutations, they are not hybrids. Hybrids are a breeding of two diverse species to produce specimens with characteristics of both species.
To breed mutations which occur spontaneously, breeders work with like marked birds or carriers which genetically have the potential to reproduce the desired new mutation. With continuing breeding the new mutation becomes stabilized, and will improve in size, pigmentation and over-all characteristics. Mutation breeding does not weaken the natural health of the species as they are produced from "normal coloured" birds. Many mutations are sex-linked which will only produce specimens of one sex or the other or must have one parent that is the desired mutation to reproduce mutation offspring. Mutation breeding is a challenging and rewarding field of aviculture built on patience and hard work.
I wish to thank everyone for their daily votes and blogs. I read each one and have learned a lot from your input.
I have added the mutation name to each picture for easier identification.

The Ara Project Part # 3

Happy Humpday everybirdie. Zeena here with the conclusion of the Ara Project series. I hope you have enjoyed visiting with these highly endangered Macaws, and learning about what is being done to help save the species in the wild. I wish to thank each one of my friends for your continuing votes and words of encouragement. I love receiving input from my friends, and learning more.

The Scarlet Macaw (Ara macao) is found in lowland rainforest and savanna, in Mexico remote portions of humid forest, on the Pacific slope in Honduras, in Costa Rica deciduous and humid forest, Colombia in lowland rainforest and gallery forest and Venezuela in rainforest and savanna. Although the Scarlet Macaw is listed by IUCN as least concern there is evidence of a population decline in the wild. It is listed by CITES as Appendix I. The declines in this species' population are due to habitat loss and fragmentation (expected to lose 20-35% of habitat within its range over 40 years (Soares-Filho et al. 2006, Bird et al. 2011)), the wild bird trade and hunting for feathers and food. Current population estimates are 20,000 – 50,000; total Central American population no more than 4000. Many outside conditions could suddenly drop numbers to the point where they will be unable to rebuild populations.
Reasons for decline in population;

Exploitation for the former wild bird pet trade
Habitat loss and fragmentation due to logging and agriculture
Illegal trapping for in-country trade, food and feathers
Shooting for the sport of it
Ecology

The Scarlet Macaw is found in lowland rainforest and savanna, in Mexico remote portions of humid forest, on the Pacific slope in Honduras, in Costa Rica deciduous and humid forest, Colombia in lowland rainforest and gallery forest and Venezuela in rainforest and savanna. Birds are encountered in pairs, parties of 3-4 or flocks up to 30 individuals as they forage on fruits, fruits and nuts of various palms, and seeds, flowers and nectar.

Tomorrow we are going to stop and take a peek into a few nestboxes to discover what eggciting chicks are inside. Bring your cameras for these awesome new arrivals in aviculture.

Oh yeah, Mom totally understands how it is to go into work and have knots in her stomach! Only Mom's former supervisor was nice to Mom, all the time marking down what she thought Mom did wrong. Never shared it with Mom, either. So it is awful to deal with, for sure.

Mom says that the dragon lady goes to the bathroom like everyone else, so if your Mom can picture her naked on the toilet...it might help dealing with her. Only don't laugh if she thinks of it when around the DL. Mom says that there is something wrong with people who treat others badly, and maybe your Mom could think of how sad it is that the woman has to be like that to feel important, it might help. She obviously has some issues and takes pleasure in making others uncomfortable. Don't let her win...she is not worth your Mom's feeling bad.

  Hi Pookie
Hello Everybird, Zeena here with the continuing article on the Ara Project. Today we will look at the Great Green Macaw ( Military or Buffon's). We will look at their distribution and what has pushed them to the point of extinction.

Once prevalent throughout the entire Caribbean, Great Green Macaw (Ara ambiguus) populations have declined alarmingly in recent years due to poaching and deforestation, in particular the cutting of Mountain Almond trees. BirdLife International states" that over the past 50 years global populations have been reduced by half." A census conducted in the Cordillera de Chongon Colonche and Esmeraldas Province in Ecuador in 2010 found only 8 birds, with the current population in all of Ecuador suspected to be 30-40 birds (E. Horstman in litt. 2012). Recent conservation efforts in Costa Rica have stabilized numbers with less than 300 birds and an estimated 25-35 breeding pairs remaining (PsittaScene Aug. 2011). There are less then 1000 individuals in South American.
Factors contributing to decline in numbers;

Unsustainable exploitation, poaching for the wild bird trade
Subspecies guayaquilensis reportedly shot as a crop-pest
Conversion of forest to oil-palm and banana plantations, causing the loss of the large Mountain Almond
Increased impact of logging, agriculture, illegal coca plantations, gold mining and hunting
Illegal trapping for in-country trade, food and feathers

Ecology

This macaw prefers lowland humid forest and also strongly deciduous forest; in Costa Rica lowland primary forest. It is found at altitudes to 600m (1968 ft) in Costa Rica and1000m (3280 ft) in Panama. Less gregarious than other large macaws, it is found in pairs and groups of 3-4 birds, foraging on fruits and flowers.

Tomorrow we will take a closer look at the plight of the Scarlet Macaws, and what we can do to help save the remaining populations.

  Hi Pookie & Laka
We have finally arrived at Monday once more. It's hard to realize one week is already gone on my BOTM campaign. Today we will take a short stop-over in Costa Rica to visit some good friends of mine and see what they have been busily working on. Being a Macaw this is one subject that is near and dear to my heart. The Ara Project. The Ara Project is a Costa Rican non-profit organization that’s breeds, for the sole purpose of release into the wild, endangered Scarlet & Great Green Macaws. With only 2000 Scarlet Macaws left in Costa Rica and only around 2500 Great Green Macaws ( also known as Buffon's or Military) left in the world the Ara Project is proving "breeding for release" to be a valuable tool to prevent further declines in the numbers or even extinction of these magnificent birds. They work in conjunction with MINAET (Costa Rican Ministry of Environment, Energy & Telecommunications).
The Great Green or Military(Buffon's) Macaw is endangered, and has been one of the key elements in the proposal for the formation of a new National Park in Costa Rica, Maquenque National Park. Already significant parts of the bird's existing habitat is covered by Nature reserves and other conservation projects. Project Ara is working hand in hand with locals to reestablish a strong breeding pool of wild Macaws with the end result to stop and reverse it's rapid decline.

The Ara Project incorporates breeding techniques and aviary management in order to carry out controlled release programs in conjunction with Costa Rican wildlife laws imposed by MINAET. The Ara Project has released a total of 80 Scarlet Macaws on its release sites. The Ara Project aimed to started their Great Green Macaw reintroduction program in 2011. This will be Costa Rica's and the world's first official reintroduction of the species. To date having released a number of both species
In the 80's retired American couple Margot and Richard Frisius started a licensed zoological park to take care of parrots confiscated by the government or disowned by private owners. In 1992 they officially started a breeding program to participate in macaw conservation, resulting in the establishment of the non-profit organization formerly known as "Amigos de las Aves" (Friends of the Birds). Over the years they created what has become the biggest collection of Great Green Macaws in captivity and, upon acquiring a breeding stock of sufficient genetic diversity, a successful Scarlet Macaw reintroduction program.

  Hi Pookie
That's eggactly how I feel when my Mom takes my sleepy hut out and washes it and I don't see it all day either!I have no where to go when I want to take a nap!I'm so glad that the sunshine is warm enough to dry the laundry fast these days!OOOOHHHHH!NOOOO!! No one touches our sleepy huts eggcept our Mom's and even then that's not good!I do hope your daddy knows not to get near your sleepy hut again!I think you told him off right, you don't mess with his tools so why should he mess around with your sleepy hut!Now why would our Mom's want to wash our sleepy huts anyway? We didn't go out and bring mud or sand inside them so why did they need to be washed anyway?
Ohh!Does Kallie love his new summer sleepy hut!Mom is still trying to get a picture of it to show you and your sweet Mama Ruthie but he shoots outta the sleepy hut and nearly bit a piece off the camera lens the other day!Jeez! Its not like she was trying to get in there with him!
Loving you always and forever and sending you all my love along with warm GCC hugs and soft GCC kisses to my favorite Pookster! Love always,Dixie
