How my tiel and I got together was just a miracle. I had lost my first tiel in 98 and was hoping one would drop on my doorstep and in 2002 we were supposed to babysit him for his previous mommy and she passed away and her friend asked if we would keep him for our own. I was so happy! cause I needed a tiel to fill the hole my first tiel left. Of course my peach fronted conure arrived the day after he died but it was only a tiel that could fill up that hole. I love my conure because she makes me laugh and keeps me happy. I was even happier when Peepers came to fill that void, the void needed by another tiel. I became the owner when my mom asked me if I wanted to keep him and I was like heck ya, I love this tiel so much! I heard his previous mommy wanted to make sure he was in a loving home before she died and he sure is!.

Hi! My name is Peepers

I am a Cinnamon Mutation Cockatiel from Marstons Mills, MA.

Peeps,Big Boy,

22 years old   M

Cinnamon Mutation Cockatiel

nutraberries,pa- sta,animal crackers,apple peels,

i like to hang out on the playpen with my 4 conure brothers/sister- s and my pesky lutino brother and on my mommys shoulder.

I dont like showers but mommy makes me go with her but hey at least im a clean boy!, when my brother Mario steals MY perch(Lutino Cockatiel),when i gotta be stuck in the cage when mommy goes to work cuz i like to hop onto the floor because she doesnt want me getting hurt,

I love my mommy cuz she takes real good care of me and gives me lots of loves, she says im a special boy cuz i eat with my foot like a parrot she takes me on car rides, walks on my neat neon yellow harness and leash which i hate but wearing that leash means going out so i gotta be a good boy for mommy and wear it,she likes to snuggle with me and i with her. for my birthday she makes me a special birdie cake topped with seeds cuz i only get pellets for my meals cuz she thinks pellets are alot more healthier for me than seeds and they taste good too! the fruity ones are my fave! im just soo happy she adopted me cuz im happy that i found her and made her soo happy again! me being left at her house was a miracle to her and to me too cuz i have 5 brothers/sister- s for company when mommy goes to work.

i like to eat with my foot like a parrot mommy thinks its soo COOL when i do that,I like to hold my foot up when i sing and she thinks thats soo CUTE!, mommy taught me to play dead, i just lay on my back in the palm of her hand real still she thinks thats soo Cute as well and hopping on the floor and going for a run catch me if u can cuz my little pink tiel legs can move!.

"where there is floor tiel will travel, watch your step cuz im goin for a run!".

  Hi, Peepers
We look forward to seeing the flower pics. Those cinnamon rolls and anise biscotti sound sooooo yummy. Mom's made both of those before but not lately. She made pumpkin bread and apple crisp yesterday for today, but both already have been sampled. Since mom has to work today it'll just be the family tonight anyway.

Hmmmm, guess after all this time you and Mario aren't gonna suddenly like each other. Good that you respect each other enough to share the birdhouse and don't end up in endless beak battles.

That wild turkey must've gotten separated from the flock. Hopefully it won't be dodging traffic again and all the wild turkeys are safe. Well, if Nana is by the woods it is no wonder see 'em occasionally.

Hopefully your temps will be warmish and no rain today.

Happy Easter to all. Wing hugs and a vote, Pearl and Silver.

  Hi Peepers
Mom made our Easter bread yesterday, which is pretty much an all day affair. There are so many eggs in it, it takes forever to rise. She also did the hard custard, so it's in the fridge. She decided to do deviled eggs and dye the egg whites this year, so they are in the fridge as well. This way, people will eat them and she won't end up with a dozen hard boiled eggs. Last night she found a fish fry at a local church, so that's where she got dinner. It wasn't as good as the place she usually goes, though.
Today mom worked the Easter Egg Hunt at the museum. Guess where they put her? Yep, Bird Hall with a trainee. It was fun, the kids were so excited and the touchables were a hit, too. Everyone who stopped got a plastic egg with an owl shaped eraser inside.
Now mom is making the wedding soup for tomorrow. All in all it's going to be a good dinner, we think. We will get a sample of pasta and veggies, and maybe some salad out of it. Falco won't eat any, but the rest of us will enjoy the treats. Hope you are having a good day, warm, sunny, and filled with love. Happy Easter! Hugs, Willie

  Hi, Peepers
Well, our mom didn't look to see where that Qtip was going, heehee. We're just glad it is all over for a year! For you and Mario to preen each other means you'd have to be next to each other and sounds like that doesn't happen. Good that you let your mom help groom the areas you can't reach.

Was that a wild turkey running in the road? Our mom's never seen one in the wild. Imagine they are huge and hopefully got out of the way of all the cars.

Continued 70s and sunny here. Hopefully you'll get that warm up for Sun.

Have a great day, wing hugs and a vote, Pearl and Silver.

  Hi Peepers
They already started to replace the trees along one of the roads in the park. Mom drives that way to the museum. The new ones are pretty, and mom thinks they were bought with an eye towards their hardiness around gas fumes and other air pollutants, since they're on a road.
Well, it's Good Friday, so mom made the Easter bread dough this morning. She usually does it today because she doesn't have museum or wildlife center responsibilities.
Bree came yesterday and Falco gave her and mom a run for their money! She flew all over the place until Bree finally caught her in mom's lightweight jacket, because the towel wasn't big enough. She left all of us our wings, though, because Daisy still hasn't learned manners with us birds, and mom wants all of us to have an escape, just in case.
I was the drama king, as usual, crying before Bree even got near me with the clippers. Mom thinks I'm so funny! Peppino was okay, except he bit mom pretty hard because she let his head out of the towel. She'll learn in time. We all got Falco's favorite treat, movie popcorn nutriberries, when Bree was done. She always says Millie and Lily are the best behaved, and they never want a treat for it.
Today, as well as the Easter bread, mom will boil eggs for deviled eggs, and make the hard custard that the family calls Easter Cheese. Everyone looks forward to it each year. Hope you are enjoying some sunshine today. It's a bit overcast here, but pretty nice, and it's supposed to hit the 70s on Sunday! I'll believe that when I see it, though. Here's a big hug today for you! Hugs, Willie

  Hi, Peepers
Glad that your family was past the point of all the accidents with the wet roads and the flying ice. Even when one is driving slower and taking precautions never know about others speeding or as you say the uncontrolled nature of things like ice or splashed water making it hard to see.

Hopefully your temps will warm up before summer hits! We continue to be in the 70s here.

Think our dad rototilled the area the lawn was gonna go before he did the lawn. Still had to deal with roots but was a tad easier.

Yup, our mom'll make a couple of things for Sun dinner on Sat as she surely won't want to do much after she comes home from work.

We got our well bird check yesterday. After the poking and prodding our beaks were polished and claws trimmed. We weren't happy, but at least there was some millet in our birdhouse upon our return.

Have a great day, wing hugs and a vote, Pearl and Silver.

  Hi Peepers
Thanks for that recipe, now mom can't wait to try it.
The trees need to be taken away, they've lived their life spans and if they fall now, they could damage cars and people by falling into the street. The botany curator at the museum talked the parks people into leaving the healthier ones up for a few years more for a few reasons. It's nearly impossible to buy trees grown from seed any more. Most nurseries sell clones. This means they can get them out for sale in fewer years. Saplings must be cared for over a longer period before they can be sold. The bad news about that is with all clones, if something goes wrong with one, it will happen to all of them because there's no genetic diversity to fend off pests, fungi, or disease.
In trees grown from seeds, there is a natural genetic diversity, so they are not all susceptible to the same illnesses, etc. Anyway, Dr. Morton is collecting seeds from the healthier trees to add to the genetic diversity of the sycamore population and she is trying to talk the parks department into investing in saplings grown from seed rather than the cheaper cloned trees.
Sorry for boring you with all that, mom is off the soapbox now. We hope sis has a fruitful day at the surgeon, gets some good information and some dates so she knows when she can be feeling better. Hope also that you are having a good day and not freezing. Hugs, Willie

  Hi, Peepers
Our mom will be working on Sun, but that's her usual day anyway. Not sure what her meal plan will be but think she'll get some ham today and hide it for Sun! Think she'll have to make things on Sat as she won't want to do much when she comes home. Fresh baked bread and homemade cookies will be an awesome part of any meal.

Heard that the polar thingy is returning so a further delay of spring. At least you had a few days here and there of the sun and warmth. Saw that some areas are snowy or getting flooded so that's not good. It should be falling here instead where we need the water.

Think our dad put out seeds to do the lawn and it worked okay. Using sod works best and does take more work but looks great instantly! Many around here don't have lawns due to the droughts we've had. Ours is the drought resistant type and less area of lawn than we had in the past.

Usually when Cookie mentions NTT we do fly over and look but don't always blog. Mostly, we only know one or two and a few times were totally stumped then saw the answers and knew we should've known some!

Have a great day, wing hugs and a vote, Pearl and Silver.

Mom will look forward to that recipe, it sounds good. She bought a bunch of those really colorful mini peppers today, just because they are so pretty and sweet.
It sounds just awful to have that wood chipper going all day and the saws, too. Hope there is still some shade left when the guys are done. In Pittsburgh in one of our parks, there are trees planted along the streets which have basically lived out their lives. They are over 100 years old and will be replaced in the next few years by new trees. Mom will hate to see them go, though, they are beautiful sycamores. Hope you are having a good day today, it's snowing here! Hugs, Willie

  Hi, Peepers
Sounds like the wind was very strong if it whipped those area rugs all over the yard. At least they got the dust out and the wind dispersed it all. Think the plants will be happier waiting for a calmer day for pruning 'em. Good for the trees to be trimmed to help prevent power outages and with those strong winds for breaking any big branches that might do damage.

Our skinsis finds a lot of recipes online whether on a food network link or just other recipe places. Mom looks occasionally as well.

Hmmm, guess Kallie hasn't figured out if the beak is overgrown or otherwise not 'perfect' then makes it harder to eat and we assume he loves to eat.

That's good to get some assistance with all the leaves and such. Over the years the amount of dirt in our yard has been covered with and eggstended patio. The lawn is greatly reduced and only small areas available to garden. Less yard to deal with.

Mom's puter usually 'tells' her it'll update in 15 minutes and she can delay it, but sometimes she has the puter on while doing something else and comes back to it in a few minutes and then those updates take over.

Good that you and Mario can share without battling if you have enough perches and multiple food bowls.

Okay, we flew over to NTT and didn't know many, but guessed the theme.

Have a great day, wing hugs and a vote, Pearl and Silver.

  Lifespan of a Diamond Dove
The lifespan of the diamond dove is different in captivity than if living in the wild.

In captivity, the diamond dove usually lives about 12-15 years. With proper care, they can even live into their 20's.

In the wild, however, diamond doves only live 3-5 years.

  Hi Peepers
That stuffed garlic bread sounds heavenly! Mom is going to try it one day. What is essence, though? Can you get it at the supermarket? Is it under Emeril's name?
Mom had 2 trainees today, and it was an all bird day, so she was happy. She had them both get on the camo sheet and the ghillie suit and do the owlet with Martha. She couldn't go in there because there are only 2 suits, so she kind of watched through a corner of the curtain to see that they did right.
They went into the main aviary next, where there are a couple of blue jays, a cardinal and a starling. It's not too crowded in there yet, but they got to do the inside and the outside aviaries. Last but not least, they did the avian nursery. Again, no babies yet, but several cages to be cleaned anyway. Those birds included screech owls, pigeons, doves, a woodpecker, a jay, and a yellow bellied sapsucker. It was a good variety, so the trainees got to deal with a lot of birds. The dove escaped and mom showed them how to catch it calmly and replace it in the cage.
This afternoon we think Bree is coming to trim nails and maybe wings. Mom is still thinking about the wings part, because of Daisy dog. She wants us to be able to get away if necessary. Mom is about ready for a haircut, too, so maybe Lena will be coming over as well. It's not as pretty as it was over the weekend, but it's still pleasantly warm. Hope you are having a good day.   Hi, Peepers
Continues to be in the low 70s and sunny for us so very nice out, but need rain still. Your rose bushes can wait a lil while for pruning.

Thanks for telling us about the garlic bread. Anything that is carmelized is tasty. (Mom isn't fond of Emeril so would never have seen anything he made on his show.)

That's good to get the assistance of skinsis for the beak trim on your frothers. Not sure why Kallie would keep sticking out his tongue, oh, probably to get your mom to quit the trim, heehee.

We figured that your yard waste might turn into compost like we have here, but too bad you have to haul it there as transporting leaves and stuff is messy when they are damp.

Yeah, gotta be something that gets in Mario's way of moving his tail around. 'Tiel tails are long so not surprising that he bangs it on a perch or something.

We'll try to fly over the NTT later to see the lyrics. Mom is behind sending out blogs this morning and won't finish before leaving for work as the puter was doing updates.

  Hi Peepers
It's a c/p night again, sorry! Mom had a busy day yesterday, even though she wasted a couple of hours going to that event. There was a mix up and they weren't expecting her, so there was no table for her to set things up. They offered her a tray table, like you'd set a TV dinner or snack on, but she was worried about children knocking over the quails' cage, so she declined and drove back to the center.
It has been a gorgeous weekend, and some of our daffodils have finally bloomed! Today it hit over 80 degrees, YAY! Mom attended a parrot raising class this morning, then another meeting for a new group called BirdSafe Pittsburgh. They are recruiting volunteers to walk the city early in the morning during spring and fall migrations to pick up any injured migratory birds in the city and get them to the wildlife center for rehabilitation. Mom offered to transport birds a couple of days a week.
Once she got home and cleaned our cages, it was evening and she was tired, so she sat in front of the TV staring stupid all night! Anyway I hope you had a glorious day and got some sun and attention. Hugs, Willie

  Hi, Peepers
The condo skinbro showed your mom sounds wonderful. Being so close to the stores will save on gas if he does walk there unless stopping on his way home from work. How awesome to have a friend from elementary school to share a place with. The parronts still have a few friends from that age (besides each other) they keep in touch with.

Glad all of your grooming got done with the nice day despite all the lil mishaps. Silver always had broken tail feathers. Sometimes he wouldn't land correctly when flying and use the tail as a buffer to not crash land so hard and they would get bent.

Our dad's been weeding our yard and trimming a few bushes here and there. So easy to toss everything in the yard waste container for pick up with the trash and recycle. We imagine yours must be taken to the dump unless it is used for mulch?

Thanks for liking our derby pic. Mom made sure to start with a non blurry pic of us! We are all entered in the contest.

  Supplements
Your dove should be given a vitamin/mineral supplement to assure you are providing all the nutrients it needs, especially if it is a finicky eater.

Note: Although the directions may tell you to put the vitamins in water, this is not good to do. Vitamins can settle to the bottom or lose its potency. It is best to put the supplement on soft foods or moist fruits or vegetables.

In addition to a vitamin/mineral supplement, doves need a small amount of grit. Unlike most birds, doves swallow their seeds whole and grit helps to digest them.

There are two kinds of grit:

Indigestible grit, which is sand or bits of ground rock. However, if your bird overeats this, it can become sick.

Digestible grit such as oyster shell, ground cuttlebone, or crushed eggshells pass safely through their system and is also a good source of calcium.

  Hi Peepers
Mom loves when the daffodils come out, we just have a few in bloom right now, though.
Want to hear something strange? Mom has an event to attend today with one of the education animals. She kind of knows where the place is, north of here, off the turnpike on a major highway. She isn't sure which exit to take, so she checked MapQuest for directions. This is a rather large shopping center and very upscale, so you'd think it was easy, right? Wrong! MapQuest said they couldn't find it, and try to revise the search. Well, I think she'll end up taking the wrong exit, because last time she went there, that's what she did. It takes her to US19, but too far south. She can suck it up and drive on that road though.
This is an Easter Egg hunt in the shopping area, so she hopes she'll be taking a bird to the event, because they do lay eggs...can't imagine tying in the porcupine, skunk, or possum to the egg hunt!
It's supposed to reach 70 here today, we hope that's true. It is sunny right now, and since mom will be at an outdoor venue, we hope it stays that way. Hope you are having a good day and getting sunshine and scritches. Hugs, Willie

  Hi, Peepers
How awesome to have the spring temps arrive so no heavy coats needed. Spring here is usually cool mornings, warm days and then cool again at night.

Our mom and her sibs gave up on gift eggchange years ago and send out cards only. It is hard when some don't have steady employment to afford to buy things for others. Wow, your mom and Nana sure got a lot of errands done in the day. Ours likes to do hers all in one trip as if she returns home she doesn't wanna go out again.

Hopefully the condo skinbro wants to move too is a nice place. Still, it is good for him to get out on his own and sharing means less struggle with eggspenses as he's just starting out on a new job.

Haven't tried making the derby pic again yet. Was gonna do it last night, but the parronts were watching their beloved ice hockey team (SJ Sharks) thrash the Colorado team with a 5-1 score. Hopefully they play like that next week when the playoffs start.

Have a great day, wing hugs and a vote, Pearl and Silver.

  Hi Peepers
Thanks for the prayers, mom feels good to hear that so many people care enough to pray for her.
Mom talked to a friend at the museum yesterday who has the same thing in both eyes. She says the shots will stop the progress of the condition, even if they don't reverse it. Mom feels they caught it in time so it's not too bad. She felt relieved to talk to her colleague too.
Polly is doing super, yesterday she hid from mom when mom was ready to carry her down the steps. Mom called to her, then she went downstairs, and Polly came right down after her. She still can't go up, but that's a great step for her. Mom can tell when they walk that Polly is feeling much better, too, because she's walking normally again.
Mom had 7 year olds today at the museum for a dino tour, and they liked it. It is raining today, so the dogs probably won't get another walk. Mom will go to the fish fry tonight to get her and her neighbor fish dinners, though. I hope you are having a good day, getting some sun and warm weather, and seeing lots of flowers. Hugs, Willie

  A Healthy Diet (Continued)
PROTEIN

In addition to fruits and vegetables, you need to include protein in your dove's diet.

Insects are a good source of protein, although they are not necessary for your dove. You can either give them live insects or dried ones.

Another good source of protein are chopped hard-boiled eggs. This is important for breeding doves that are raising chicks. Crushed egg shells mixed in with the egg will provide calcium with the protein. Note: Eggs must be cooked thoroughly. Your bird can become sick from partially or uncooked eggs.

You can also give your dove tiny bits of thoroughly cooked meat or bits of cheese. However, this should be given only rarely and as a special treat.

  Hi, Peepers
It is a good work ethic to always be doing something or asking if there's something that needs to be done. Standing around and yapping with coworkers is frowned upon at mom's work unless both are on break and not within sight of shoppers. So sounds like skinbro's off to a great start.

That's great that Dixie is happy to have his share on the playgym. Don't need Candi being mean to him. Hopefully the parronts will get her table manners in line.

Temps went up a tad yesterday but it was still in the 70s (although close to 80) but no need of the a/c as it cooled nicely by late afternoon.

Mom's gonna work on our derby pic again tonight. Could be she chose a pic of ours that was a tad blurry and just got worse from there.

The scarf still needs about another foot to be long enough to finish.

Have a great day, wing hugs and a vote, Pearl and Silver.

AW PEEPERS, THAT WOULD BE GREAT IF YOUR MOM FINDS THE BAKED O'S AT YOUR PET STORE. OUR 2 PET STORES DON'T GET MUCH IN THE WAY OF BIRD FOOD. MOM WOULD BE VERY HAPPY TO GET SOME.

WE HAD 63 DEGREES HERE BUT WAS OVERCAST. IT TRIED TO RAIN BUT IT STAYED SOUTH OF US. TOMORROW WILL BE MID 60'S AND THEN POSSIBLY 70 ON SATURDAY. SUNDAY WILL BE RAIN ALL DAY LONG WITH TEMPS DROPPING THRU THE DAY. THEN ON MONDAY DOWN COMES SOME COLDER AIR FROM THE POLAR REGIONS. WINTER IS NOT LETTING GO YET.

I DO HOPE YOU HAVE A WONDERFUL FRIDAY.

  A Healthy Diet
FRUITS AND VEGETABLES

Although all common pet doves are in the seed-eaters group, there are additional foods that can be a part their diet.

Seed-eating doves cannot tolerate large amounts of high-water-content foods. However, a daily treat of fresh food is fine for most doves.

Fruits and vegetables are a good source of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. When choosing produce, (one's that are safe for birds) bright colors are the healthiest choice. Example: sweet potatoes are more nutritious than white potatoes, red peppers have more vitamins than green peppers, and red grapes are higher in antioxidants than green grapes. Dark leafy green vegetables are also nutritious.

Some of the most favorite foods of the dove include:
shredded greens, grated carrots, finely chopped broccoli florets, diced apple, berries, fresh corn and peas. Your dove may not like all these foods, but as you experiment with differents ones, you will find that they may be some of their favorites.

  Hi Peepers
I did enter the contest too. There are a lot of us guys in hats this year, it's gonna be a tough one!
Our willow has catkins on it, the forsythia looks kind of yellow, although it's only buds, and there are buds on the azalea and lilac. The peonies are starting to come up as well, we can see little red spears near the ground. Spring must be here!!!
After many phone calls and deliberation yesterday, mom has decided to go ahead with the April 24th surgery for her right eye, so she'll have at least one with clear vision. Lens crafters say they can replace the right lens in her present glasses so that's why she made the choice.
Today mom has 2 tours at the museum, then we get her for the rest of the day, YAY! She was going to go shopping with a friend, but decided we're more important. Kind of makes us feel good, you know? HOpe you are having a beautiful sunny day like we are. Even if it doesn't get warm yet, the sun gives us hope! Hugs, Willie

  Hi, Peepers
Well, skinbro can learn to drive the stick if necessary and imagine having the previous forklift eggsperience would help make it easier for him to get a license for that if need be.

Sounds like Candi needs more training to learn to share with Dixie and to be better with your mom. However, probably easier for Dixie to munch on his food on the playgym.

Temps here dropped to the 70s so no need for the a/c and had the windows open for the cool air in the evening. Hopefully you'll get the warmup soon to go outside.

We made a derby pic but it came out kinda blurry. Mom's gonna try it again today if she has time. We know the voting won't start for another week or so.

Have a great day, wing hugs and a vote, Pearl and Silver.

  Hi Peepers
Don't you look dapper for the derby? That's a great look for you, hope you win the guy's contest.
Mom went to the retinal specialist yesterday, so we didn't get to blog. Thanks for sending prayers and good thoughts her way. Her eyes were dilated nearly until after 7 last night. They took lots of photos and told mom she has wet macular degeneration in her left eye and dry macular degeneration in the right. She already knew about the dry, because she's had it in both eyes for some years now, but the left one turning wet is a new development, and possibly a harmful one. That kind leads to blindness, so she's hoping they caught it early enough to stop the progress and she can still end life with vision in both her eyes. Right now, though, it seems she has to make a choice: get the right cataract removed and wait a few months to get the left eye done, or get them both done (and not see clearly) in 3 or 4 months. The dilemma is that she will still need glasses, and it's tough to pay for one pair, much less 2 pairs in a 3 or 4 month time period. Still, she'd love to see better. Mom is a voracious reader, 2 or 3 books a week, and she's been reading the same book for a week and a half now. She also does needle crafts, crochets, and sews, so this is particularly frustrating, not having the vision to do any of it. Anyway, that's how things stand right now. Her second treatment is May 12, followed by one in June, then a final evaluation to see if it did any good.
Meanwhile, Polly got her stitches out yesterday and her doc said she's doing well for being only a week out of surgery. Mom cleaned the main aviary, the RVS room, and the outdoor groundhog pen today, so her work load at the center was partly animals, and the rest of her time was spent doing dishes and laundry.
I hope you will all forgive the c/p today, it's too much info to keep typing over and over. I hope also that you are having a good day, sunny like it is here! Hugs, Willie
