i happened to go into a pet store and saw this beautiful severe macaw. it wouldn't have anything to do with me and when i went near her she tried to bite me. a few days later my hubby and i were eating at a restaurant near the pet store and i persuaded my hubby to go in and see this beautiful macaw. it was love at first sight between the two and my hubby bought her on the spot. the next day after bringing her home and getting her settled into our home, Cori decided i was her mate and no one else. she allows my hubby to hold her but it is me she wants 24/7.   Hi Cori
Mom used to belong to a Bird Club that had volunteers to join together to count all the backyard birds. It was quite interesting!
This morning was a bright sunny morning but very frigid and bitter cold. Our highs for the day were 23 the lows of 17 and its 23 right now. After Mom got dad off to work, she collected the rest of the trash and recyclables and loaded them in her car. Then she got us all up and cleaned all our cages, swept our room and gave us our bean mix.She was going to take Dixie with her but it was way too cold to take any of us out so he stayed home with the rest of us.When Mom got to Nana's she checked out her heat box and plugged it in the bird room for her,got all the trash in Nana's car and got Nana's trash out in the car along with ours, along with the recyclables and then Nana made them breakfast and tea then they went to the dump where Mom got rid of all the recyclables and the trash, from there they went to Falmouth to attend the Stations of the Cross, from there they went over the Bridge to Wareham so Mom could spend her $10.00 coupon she had for JC Penney. They both looked around and Mom couldn't find anything she had wanted or really needed, then she found some work out pants and tried them on but Mom didn't like the way they looked, didn't like the seams on the sides of the legs that kept twisting around, plus they were a little see thru on the butt area even though they were black Mom put them back. She finally found another pair that were what she really wanted and for a lot less too, they were on sale for $9.99 and Mom got two pairs for the price of one. Then from there they went to Dollar Tree so Nana could get what she needed and they didn't have what Nana wanted so they left to go back to Nana's as it was after 2:00pm and the sun was gone and it was getting colder. When they got back to Nana's Mom took everything out of the car,and Nana worked on making a salad while Mom made them some hot coffee,Nana made our cousins up their fruit bowl snack and Mom brought it in to them. They had lunch and then Mom checked the heat box in the Bird Room again and then Mom started Nana's new dishwasher, she has never run it since she got it and Mom loaded the lunch dishes and the birdie dishes in it along with the cups and silverware and started it up for Nana before she left to go home. When Mom got home Dad came out to help with the packages but Mom didn't have much at all.Mom got dinner started for dad and then checked in on us,Dad had given us our snacks and checked Dixie's Bird Warmer and Candida's thermal perch to make sure they were still running.Skin sis called Mom and she sounds so much better than she did last night when Mom talked to her.Its going to be even more frigid than it was today and they are warning everyone if they have to go outside to really layer everything and use scarves, hats and mittens.Mom is hoping to stay in all day tomorrow hopefully and we hope our dad will be able to spend the whole long weekend with us but we

My mom was thrilled that while she was sitting on the beach, a heron was standing very close to her.
We had a nice sunny day of 73. My parronts went to the beach for a while. Mom said the ocean was cold. Later, I went outside to listen to the birds and get some sun on my feathers. It felt good. Looks like we'll have the same for the weekend.

  Hi Cori,
Today I'm gonna talk about Valentines Day.

Valentines Day is a special day for love and friendship. It is celebrated on February 14th.

Many years ago people believed there lived a kind man named Saint Valentine. Valentine's Day is named after him. He was the patron of lovers and was friends with many children. Children would give him letters and flowers to show their love. Perhaps that's how the custom of giving valentine cards began. People also thought that on the same date birds chose their mates. Some young people wanted to choose their sweethearts by picking a name from a jar.

Today different kinds of valentine cards are given. There are sweet and loving valentines. . . . And silly ones too.

People have always believed that love comes from the heart. A sweetheart is also called a valentine too. Some admirers give their valentines flowers on Valentine's Day..... And others give boxes of candy in the shape of a heart. There are cakes and candies in the shape of a heart, too. Some even have printed messages on them.

Valentine's Day has been so commercialized to the point where everything you see in the store is full of heart candies to stuffed animals with hearts and messages and even balloons too.

A mere happy Valentine's Day would suffice for most people and birdie friends.

So with that in mind, an early Happy Valentine's Day to you all, my sweetheart friends! :)

I love you always and forever.

I thank you for all the votes and support for my BOTM campaign run.

Here's an early Valentine vote for you.

With love from Hawaii.

  Hi Cori
Mom had a really bad day yesterday. On the way home from her Dr appt, mom put the window down to pay the Turnpike toll & the window would not go back up. It was 20° and she almost froze driving home. She couldn't wait to get home & get warm. She no sooner walked in the door & the furnace quit working. Mom got out the electric heaters & put 2 of them by my house and kept me nice and toasty warm. The furnace didn't get fixed until this afternoon, but it's working fine now!

I hope your day was a good one!

  Hi Cori and Boo boo
After supper tonight mom got the dishes done and cleaned my condo and was in the middle of washing my bowls and getting clean water and food when there was no water. There was a water leak down the road and figured we would lose our water at any minute. There was a water break in the same spot last year so apparently they didn’t fix it good last year though. It was only out for about an hour and I still had my water bottle so had that water. Mom buys spring water for me so I never drink the city water any way. “My heart smiles just thinking of you.“ Leaving a vote for you my friend~~Gus (RIP Chi chi)

  Hi Cori
How do they know they aren't counting the same birds twice, or the same birds someone else counted? Mom only knows a handful of the local birds, so she wouldn't be much help.

Well, I didn't get my sunbath until Mom got home from the gym a little after noon, and it was hot enough Mom sat in the shade while I got partial sun/shade. All was well until the neighborhood gopher hunter tried to creep up on me from behind the big bush. Dad spotted her and busted her, so she ran out to the sidewalk but still sat there staring at me. So he urged her over to the yard next door where she sat in the bushes and stared. Mom had stopped reading her book to keep an eye on things, and pretty soon kitty came creeping back so Mom went over to shoo her away. The little hussy proceeds to rub up against my mom's legs and purred!! I was horrified at her presumptuousness, and then Mom actually bent over and petted her. She tried to shoo her away, but after I squawked at her she just laid down about 15 feet away from me. Mom decided that was a truce as long as she kept an eye on things. Then kitty turned her attention up the street the other way....along comes a couple on the other side of the street walking their BIG dog on a leash. Kitty took off, and doggy didn't even notice me. So I still got my sunbath, but it was a little more eggcitement than I prefer!

And then to add to the indignity, Mom took me to see Camille for a nail trim. I was pretty good and only bit the towel instead of Mom, and Camille did say I was handsome so I guess it could have worse.

No juicy trial, mom got off without having to go in to court. This is primarily a small claims court, most are settled outside of court.
Today is colder, but not too bitter. Mom said she shoveled a whole INCH of snow by late afternoon. There was no new snow this morning. We are beginning to think we may finally get SNOW at Easter.
Mom took my collar off when I asked her this morning, now I'm avoiding people cause I LIKE when it is off. Zippy is still quite hungry and upset when she does not have company. She especially wants skinbro to give her skritches.

Mom likes the balled up sock idea a lot, but she says if it actually hit me, I'd probably end up with a concussion or broken wing cuz I'm so small....maybe if she got some baby sox...In the mean time, she is using a long-handled net to chase me off Sherman and Peabody's cage. It's pretty effective and she doesn't have to get up from the computer most of the time.

The Old Guy is complaining a lot, which means he is back to normal! He is pretty old, tho, and his kidneys are not functioning too well, so the fact that he recovered this much is pretty good. Mom prefers when he is too sick to complain, tho!

It just took mom 45 minutes to do one note so you know how things are going around here!hahahahahahaha McKenzie is running around and I'm hollering to get out of the play cage! Afraid that is not going to happen as long as the dog is running around. Pretty soon Ian will puppy-sit and I can have playtime with mom!
Really rainy here today but not cold so I can not complain. There are going to be tons of places that are below zero today! Hope that Polar whatever goes away quickly! Spring is really, really close and I think we are all ready for it!

  Hi Cori
You told us everything about the backyard bird count except how to get involved! Thanks for the info.
I'm pretty protective of my heap today! I didn't even want mom to pick up what fell on the floor. When she got my bowls out, I tried to bite her, too.
Happy Birthday to Charles Darwin and Abraham Lincoln today!
It's cold out there, but it's going to get colder still by Sunday. We think mom is crazy for going out in this weather, but she says it's okay as long as she bundles up.
This morning at the center, mom had the mammal nursery to do. There are only adults in there right now, 2 possums, 2 gray squirrels, and the little flying squirrel. The work wasn't too hard, and she got the floor and counter top well cleaned too. She usually wipes them off, but today she did more deep cleaning. Then she cleaned the refrigerator and freezer in the treatment room. It needed a thorough scrubbing before the craziness of baby season.
After the center, mom went to the post office, then to the supermarket to pick up some fresh fruits and veggies for us. We were nearly out today. There were no sugar snap peas, so we're going to have to settle for frozen peas until they come back. It's okay, the boys and Maxine like them. I don't eat any peas, so it's fine with me! She also got some French endive for the others, we'll see how they like it.
It's fish fry Friday, so I think mom is going up to the church to get fish dinners for her and Jeff tonight. If it's too cold, though, she may just stay here.
I hope you are having a great day, getting lots of cuddles and scritches and staying warm (or cool if you're in CA). Hugs, Falco

I hope your dad gets well soon. Your mom needs some rest too!
It was a beautiful day of 76 and the pool was 78. Mom went shopping early and dad went golfing. Dad lost a golf ball to a gator, oh well! It landed right next to him and dad let him keep it ... hehehe. Then, I had a fun walk-about the house. Mom kept an eye on me ... why? After that, we went outside for some warm sun on the feathers, it felt good! We should be in the 70's starting Saturday, hope so.

  Hi Cori
This morning after Mom got dad off to work she did some quiet work before she got us all up and watered the poor plants that she had neglected in the last several days because of all the snow and storms. They are slowly reviving. She got an email from skin sis that she arrived at the hospital at 5:17 am this morning and her surgery was scheduled for 7:30am.By now she should be back in recovery and Mom is so praying that she is all right and things went well.Mom only wishes she could be there with her and that the hospital wasn't so far away from here, skin sis said that she will try to contact Mom when she wakes up from the surgery. Its an overcast cloudy day here and so cold, the highs for the day of 28 the lows of 12 and right now its 12.The sun looks like its trying to come out and we wish it would.Mom got us up and had a big mess to clean up after from Candida's chewed cardboard covering over her grate and some of her toys, and she found our fister Celine out of the cage and on top of it.They too made a mess with pellets all over the floor and some feathers.Mom got us all cleaned out and then gave each of us our warm bean mix.Mom is happy to be home and is quite tired and didn't feel like even getting up this morning. She's in slow motion getting her chores done and collecting the trash and recycles to go to the dump tomorrow. Then she will try and clean the oven and the bathrooms and get them clean. It will be a wonderful boring day for us with nothing of interest going on,but having Mom home is everything and we don't mind at all!Mom finally heard from skin sis around 6:30pm tonight and she was hard to understand as she was still on pain meds from the surgery and was having a hard time getting comfortable without being in more pain.
We are so praying that your sweet daddy will be feeling better soon and Mom so knows what that's like when she's trying to get something done and my dad does the same thing to her.Interrupts her while shes talking on the phone and then yelling for one reason or another. My Mom works multitasking and very often lately she too loses her train of thought and forgets what she was going to do next!Give Aunt Carol a warm hug from my Mom and lots of warm wing hugs from us,we so know what she's having to deal with!
Wishing you a greyt day and I'm sending you all my love along with warm birdie hugs and soft beakie kisses!Loving you always and forever, pretty Cori,Love Peepers

Hope Dad feels better soon. Moms are bad that way, neglecting us for Dads. Not fair!!

Well, it is even slightly warmer today than yesterday with a high of 86 here, so Mom decided I needed to get outside a little earlier for my sunbath. She and Dad double-teamed me again, and I was outside at 11, but it was already plenty warm. Dad brought me a little tater chip piece, and I enjoyed that. Then Mom gave me a nutriberry a little later. Not a bad sunbath over all.

Then Mom left to go get her arthritis massage, and Mattea used something new today: hot stones! Sounds painful, but they were not burning hot, and they were smooth. Mattea rubbed Mom's pain spots with them, and they just seemed to melt the tension. Pretty neat.

Then I got her and lunch when she got home. We shared one of those frozen lunches: chicken tamale and Spanish rice. I don't care about the tamale, but I do love that rice, especially the peas and corn in there. Yum!

My mommy truly believes that sick or injured daddy's can be a pain in the tail feathers!!!

When my daddy gets sick he messes up my mommy's game plan for the day.

One time when he was sick he wanted to install an intercom in the house. My mommy said the last thing she wanted to hear was my daddy's voice booming through the house!!!

Anytime he so much as hears her move around he calls her...

I wish I could distribute this heat to my BC family who are living in cold states and they can distribute their cold weather to us birds who are frying...

I thought crickets only come out during the summer.Guess what???
They are invading us!!!!

They seem to be as confused as we are with this hot weather...

As for sick and injured mommy's and daddy's we wish you wellness and a quick recovery.

Have an awesome day

  Hi Cori
That's a sad story. That's why the wildlife center exists, to take care of animals that should stay wild. As your mom learned, they never get tame, always want to do what they are naturally suited to do.
We had more nuisance snow overnight. It's just a little, but enough to make walking the dogs a bit slippery this morning. Mom got through it, though, and swept and salted walk and driveway again. It's supposed to get REALLY cold this weekend, but no more snow is predicted. We'll see how that goes, haha.
At the end of the summer, mom told all her pool buddies that she would organize a lunch sometime over the winter. Yesterday she finally did just that. She texted, called, and emailed everyone with the details, and they are all meeting at a local restaurant for lunch on Feb. 23. She even arranged a snow date: if it's miserable on the 23rd, they will meet the following week, same time, same place.
Mom is going out to dinner tonight with her sis and brother in law. She is going to take a quick peek at their lunch menu because this is the restaurant she has chosen for the get together.
That's all the news that's fit to print. I hope you are having a great day, getting lots of cuddles and scritches. Stay warm (or cool, if you're in CA). Hugs, Falco

At this time, he has not been in the hospital for 14 months. That's a record! I hope he will be better soon. And Mommy says to tell you that she knows about that "losing your train of thought", she calls it "losing her marbles"! LOL

It was 6 degrees here this morning. We finally got a little snow yesterday. Everything looks so pretty. Guess what? Mommy won the soup contest at Curves with her Broccoli Cheddar soup.   Hi Cori,
Here's part 1

The meaning of the name “Laka” is: “Gentle, Tame”.

Aolani Name meaning & Origin is: “Beautiful Heavenly Cloud”

Hawaiian Goddesses
by Serge Kahili King

The Hawaiian concept of gods and goddesses is very different from that of Western and Near Eastern traditions, from African and Australian traditions, and from North and South American traditions. Although still different, it bears a closer resemblance to the more eclectic traditions of India, China, and Japan than with any others.

The word for god or goddess in Hawaiian is akua, whose meaning is very indeterminate. It was applied to the spirit, i.e., the invisible motive or creative essence, of anything and everything. Therefore, the Creator, the wind, the first aspect of the full moon, a high-ranking chief, a slave, a ghost, and that which causes a motor to work might all be called akua in certain contexts. For the most part, though, the word was commonly applied to forces, persons, and things which had a lot of mana, i.e., power or influence. What this means is that, when we hear or read stories of an entity such as Pele, the volcano goddess, we can never be certain whether the story is about the spirit of a natural phenomenon, the human ancestor of a particular family line, or both, or neither.

Another important feature of Hawaiian gods and goddesses is that they are often completely unrelated. To people familiar with the Greek Olympians as a family opposing the Titans as a family, or the Norse Aesir against the Vanir, relations between Hawaiian gods and goddesses seem incomprehensible. As Martha Beckwith says in Hawaiian Mythology, "It seems to me therefore probable that different immigrant families brought with them the gods and ritual familiar to them." Unlike the Hindu system, which at least tries to form the gods and goddesses of many different peoples, times, and places into an integrated whole, the Hawaiians seldom bothered to do so, allowing vastly different traditions to exist side by side in happy chaos. And in the few instances where some integration was attempted, it was always very limited in scope.

  Part 2
Part 2
One more feature to be mentioned about Hawaiian gods and goddesses is that the more power they were assumed to have, the more different forms they were thought to take at will. The most powerful could take forms that were either human, animal, vegetable, mineral, or other. The god Kamapua'a, for example, could turn into a human, a pig, a fish, a type of grass, or even the rain. In Hawaiian these forms are called kino lau (many bodies).

In this article we are putting our focus on Hawaiian goddesses, and since there are so many of them, we will only look at seven of the most important ones. Even then, only a small amount of information will be given for each one. In addition to information available from various written sources, such as Beckwith's Hawaiian Mythology, I will add information given me by members of the Kahili family who taught me their traditions pe At various times, then, I have taught about the goddesses in different ways, and that has led to some confusion on the part of students. So, for healing purposes only at a beginner level for understanding and using the concept of Hawaiian goddesses, here is the Ola 'Ana Papakahi o Na Akua Wahine Hawai'i, "The First Level Organization of Hawaiian Goddesses" in order of attributions and associations of name, principle, color, element, and primary function.

Hina: 'Ike, White, Water, Awareness (Knowledge)

Haumea: Kala, Red, Stone, Freedom (Release)

Pele: Makia, Orange, Fire, Focus (Energy)

Hi'iaka: Manawa, Yellow, Wind, Presence (Purpose)

Laka: Aloha, Green, Plants, Love (Compassion)

Kapo: Mana, Blue, Animals, Power (Ability)

Uli: Pono, Purple, People, Success (Effectiveness)

That’s all for today folks, sorry I couldn’t find a spooky story to tell you, but I’m still looking.

Thank you for all the love and support for my birdie of the month campaign.

Happy Po ‘akolu (Happy Wednesday). Humpty humpty humpty away until Friday comes.

Here’s a vote for you, sending you all warm wing hugs and beaky kisses.

Love from Hawaii,

  Hi Cori
Poor Liv, she still has pink eye & she also has a stomach virus! It hasn't been a good week for her! Mom hasn't been on BC the past 2 days because we were taking care of Livi and she spent the night last night. I love the grandkiddos sooooo much, but they don't like me chasing them around, but they do like giving me kisses!

We are in for some really cold weather. Between now and Sunday the high temps will be in the teens and low 20's and the low temps will be in the single digits! On Saturday the temp will be around 11°/-2° and very windy & with the wind chill it could feel like -20°! That's way too cold!

I hope your day was a good one!
Love & a vote

  Hi Cori--
A pair of canaries sounds long as Dad is willing to clean the cage!!

Sorry I and my fiblings have been so long absent from the BC...The Old Guy spent a week in the hospital, and then Mom had to deal with Auntie and Hubby in Law visiting for more than a week...She is just now beginning to get her act didn't help that Rosie just about got her toe chewed off by the lovebirds (again)...and that she is busily trying to chew the keys off the computer while Mom types. Rosie is just back from the vet now, and the vet said she is going to lose a toe, but they are not going to cut it off unless there are complications.

The rest of the flock is fine....Sherman and Peabody are pretty much encased in vinyl right now since Rosie won't stay away from them. The finches are pretty much ok except that Phoenix is developing a crossed bill...we kinda think that is from an injury he had before he was rescued, but it's looking like he may be the next one to visit the vet....good thing the Moms found a good one. Anyway, as long as Phoenix keeps eating, things are good, but ....

Please excuse the cut and paste....Mom will be back as soon as she can....and Rosie has a stint in the Kissing Booth coming up, so that should help!

Hugs and Kisses to all,

  Helloooo Cori!
... and Boo Boo too of course. Thanks so much for flyin' by with hatchday wishes for me t'day. You two are just the sweetest. You bet I'm havin' a ball celebratin' being 20 years old and havin' a day that's all about ME ME ME. (Ain't those our favorites!) I'm lookin' forward to the cake. There better be cake.

Everything good with you these days? Are ya stayin' thawed out and out from under all the snow? Has it been a wicked winter or a mild one like it's been here? Oh, there've been cold days (and some of those without electricity) but for the most part it's been boring and dull. I think the sun went to Florida for the winter. It sure hasn't been around at my place much this season.

Take care and thanks again for the visit!

  Hi cori, 19,739
Almost to 20K. Way to go.

Off to a crispy 49 degrees. Heck of a way to start the day, but it will warm up by late this afternoon. I'm staring to pick up words from Jetta, and learning to say his favorite word, "NO". That's a good start. R T

  Hi Cori
Thank you for signing up. The drawing will be on March 1st ... good luck.
We have a high surf advisory for the next few days. Hmmm, I'm thinking of getting my surf board out but I need a new birdy wetsuit. Maybe I'll sit this one out.
At least we will be back to 72 on Saturday. We are all looking forward to that!

Come visit me, Derby Farms, Chyna & Bailey ♥ RIP.

  Hi Cori,
Well this morning was cold by my standards and in the high 50's to 60's and mom had all the windows closed. Gee, I think Mother Nature has run a muck or something!

Here is our Hawaiian lesson for today, I will look for a spooky story tomorrow.

Today is Tuesday the ninth of February.

The sea = Kai (ky) the ocean Makai (ma-kai)

  Hello Cori~
I hope you are having a wonderful day. We are finishing up laundry and getting mom ready to go back to work tonight.
McKenzie is feeling happy today. I can tell because she keeps getting into trouble!hehehehehehe
Mom went to Costco yesterday. The problem with that is trying to find places to put the stuff. We have a case of applesauce sitting on the computer desk and cereal on the breakfast bar. The paper towels are on the dryer and there is a case of Starbucks White Chocolate Frap on the file cabinet. Those are for Jennifer. The freezer and pantry are full also. I know it sounds like a lot but mom only goes there every 2 or 3 months. Depends on how long that case of toilet paper lasts! There is a really big bag of broccoli in the fridge. Mom just won't give up! She knows I'm not going to eat it but since she is going to make me some chop I have a feeling she will sneak it in there. I'll just eat around it!hahahahaha
It's almost like Spring here today! I fell so bad for all those out east who are having to put up with snow. Wish you could all be here with me!
Enjoy the day! Leaving a vote and a big ole hug too!
Love you ~ Sugar ♥

  Hi Cori,

How are you, Girlfriend? It's Oz. Yes, we're also getting snow from last night but really not much so far but it's suppose to continue into tomorrow bringing most through the night. Mom can take the snow because she has an SUV but NOT the ice! Hopefully, it won't be tomorrow as she's watching Hope. Mom did our cages today and vacuumed the Living & Dining Rooms and Steps. She's still hurting but she said she's not ready to lay down & die, yet LOL! Now what a thing to say, Mother! Aunt Shirl made a Perdue Oven Stuffer & stuffed it with home made Stuffing (she always has extra in a pan). What a yummy dinner! I'm the only one who eats people food! I will eat my veggies but not fruits! Okay, take care and have a great day. Hope your Mom & all the Critters in your home are well. Here's a vote for you, Cutie. Bye for now.

Love & Winghugs,
Oz (Your Pink Friend)
P.S. Yes, Mom took Marcus to the Vets. She had him X-Rayed, he had blood work, fecal test (they can do that now without a sample) and he must have loved that one & a shot for sickness. When everything came out normal, they gave him his yearly shots & one for rabies and he doesn't go outside! So $425.00 later and NO the Jewelry is NOT in his stomach!! But hopefully he's good til next year. Now Koda (Aunt Shirl's Seal Point) has to go next. Mom will be taking him because Aunt Shirl hates to and my Mom doesn't mind at all!
