Hello June! Welcome to Bird Channel and here is a big vote for you. My name is Rocket, and I am an african gray, too. Yes, you can eat the cockatiel seed, but seeds are actually not good for you. Us african grays should eat a pellet diet (recommended by my vet). I am not too fond of pellets, but Mom makes me eat them anyway. She buys me special african gray food at "Bird Paradise", which is a huge bird store located in Burlington, NJ. I see that you are also from NJ. You can actually order their eclectus/african gray blend of food on line. That food has the pellets and allot of other good things like fruits and vegetables in it. Mom also likes to give us "Golden Feast" brand foods. She especially likes the "Asian Medley" and "Caribbean Bounty" blends as there are absolutely no seeds in them at all!!! A diet with lots of seeds can cause "fatty liver disease" in parrots and that is not good for us...it shortens our lives dramatically!!!! Shelled peanuts are also not good for us, as the shells can contain the bacteria which causes the disease "aspergillosis". (Aspergillosis kills parrots or makes us very very sick). Peanuts were one of my favorites, but I don't get shelled peanuts any more because of this bad disease. Instead, Mom gives me a bit of peanut butter on whole wheat bread or toast, as a treat. This suits my peanut butter craving just fine! Be sure to check out the bird Paradise web page, they have lots of great bird stuff...it is like Walmart for bird lovers!!!!
