found her in the yard with a broken leg and wing when she was a little baby and her leg never healed properly even though the vet did everything he could.. she can fly but almost never does. lately our bad male budgie Paddy Cake has been trying to make friends with her and had been chasing her all over the bedroom. although i am very leery of them being too close it has also made a big difference in Boo Boo. she is getting more exercise and seems to actually looking forward to Paddy Cake running after her. he is relentless but when he finally does stop Boo Boo will hop over and sit under his cage waiting for him to start chasing her again. Paddy Cake has now enticed his mate Piddy Girl to do the same thing. Piddy Girl has no interest in Boo Boo but just follows Paddy. Boo Boo, i think finally has her own flock now.

You know, other countries are so far more advanced than we are for some things like conservation and the ecology of this planet. That has to be the coolest thing I have read about the Norwegians and what they are doing for the bumblebee!

  Hello Bee Boo Boo~~
I hope you are having a wonderful day! Did you hear that the EPA is planning on banning pesticides in the fields where bees will be pollinating the crops? Finally someone is going to do something!! It's about time!! I sure hope it helps! They say that 99% of the bees are part of hives that bee keepers have!
Enjoy the day sweetie!

  Hi Booboo
The Norwegians have the right idea, hope it works for them.
Today was mom's last day at the museum for at least a week, she thinks. She's not on schedule for next week, but if her boss needs a fill in, she'll go to work. Next week will be the last really busy week for the year, then it should quiet down for summer camps and lazy summer days. She had 6th grade in animal adaptations today, and most of them paid attention.
I hope you are having a good day, getting lots of sunshine, cuddles, and scritches. Hugs, Willie

  Hi BooBoo
You have such interesting information about the bumble bees and bees!Mom has lots of flowers in her flower garden and our rhodies sure do attract bees also. And the hummer feeders not only attract the ants but the bees also so I think we are feeding them good here!
This morning is a grey dark dismal, dreary day here with the temperatures highs for the day being 70 the lows being 58,right now its 66 degrees and cold with the wind blowing hard again out there. We are supposed to get rain sometime today.Mom has the heat box on just to chase the chill out of the house.Mom got us all up,fed us our warm bean mix and cleaned our cages and room. Then she gathered all the trash downstairs to get ready to take to the dump tomorrow along with Nana's things and all the recyclables. She'll be vacuuming the house after she gets some of our blogs done and then figure out what she'll be doing for dinner tonight.Other than that its a quiet boring day here which we like as we get Mom home with us all day long.
Wishing you a greyt day and I'm sending you all my love along with warm birdie hugs and soft beakie kisses for sweet Little Blue Girl and Bee Girl!Loving you always and forever,Dixie

  Hi Boo Boo and Cori
Happy Thursday to all my friends. Sweetie here once more with our BOTM blog. I did miss yesterday as momma Deb was called upon at a moments notice to help out with a rather difficult birdie related situation. All went well, and it has a happy, satisfactory ending. Today we get all Momma's attention and she promises extra treats for everybirdie who was so well behaved yesterday when our friend King Mikey D's Momma helped get us ready for bed.
Our month is quickly coming to an end. We have shared some very timely and sensitive issues and discussion and I truly hope each of us has learned a little or a lot from one another's experiences. A life with a Companion Parrot is never dull, never ordinary and certainly never boring. No two species are alike, and among like species we each have our own extraordinary individuality and quirks. Some of us are as bold as a lion, others as shy as a mouse, yet we all possess the inherit ability to melt our Parront's heart, worm our way into their every thought and garner their love and respect. I wish that this description was universal, and it grieves my little Blue-Fronted Amazon heart that at this very moment, Parrots are suffering untold neglect, abuse or worse death at the hands of mankind. Never did my Momma Deb in her wildest thoughts think she would ever be writing as a Companion Parrot Advocate. That she would be one of the ones to stand up against our mistreatment and to put up the fight for our rights. Life has a way of changing suddenly, and if we allow it, it can transform a one time breeder into a Parrot Spokesperson.
I am only one Parrot, but I want to encourage each of you to take the challenge to become a Companion Parrot Ambassador. Never doubt your ability to bring about change. Whether you are a "get in your face" type, or a "quiet, shier one at a time" personality type we ALL can make a difference. Just imagine if every bird loving Parront spoke to just one person about life with a Parrot, about proper care, feeding or even shared what it is like to be owned by one of us, the impact would be fantastic. We could make change, stop improper selection of species for first time would be Parronts, change how one Parrot is treated, or how it is viewed within it's own family situation. We might open a cage door closed for years, allow a Parrot to begin to enjoy better food, have room to move in it's cage at last, find out how much fun a toy can be, or receive the Veterinarian care it needs and deserves. You would be shocked at how many do not know that their Parrot should be seen by a Veterinarian regularly. The number who feel a Parrot only needs peanuts and sunflower seeds. We need YOUR voice to make change happen.
NOW FOR TODAY"S QUESTION: It is not a question at all. Please continue to share YOUR special MOMENT(S) with your fids with us. They are interesting, educational and encouraging to read. Your experience might make a difference for someone else too.

Come visit me, SKY, Little Angel, jesse & SWEETIE, Let's talk Parrot for May's BOTM.

  Hi Boo Boo Bee
It's Alex.
Dad finally got the hose replaced on the sprinklers. Now, they all seem to be working fine. Dad also got two of the three pictures mounted in their frames. The third one held two pictures and dad worked on it for ever and got no where. He ended up taking the frame and photos Back to Aaron Brothers and they are doing it for him. Meanwhile, mom went to the police station to work for a while.
Today will be partly cloudy, with a high of 83 and a low of 58. Mom and dad may both work at the police dept. today.
Hope your day is fun.

  Hi, Boo Boo
Thanks for the info about the Norway bees and how they are trying to help save them. We always see a lot of bees in our lavender bushes. Not sure if honeybees or bumblebees but they are bees. Do all types of bees help with pollination or just the honey ones?

  Hi Boo Boo
I guess we wouldn't mind bumble bees if they minded their own business. I know mom has had some issues with what she calls Red-Winged wasps ... those little nasties will chase you for just being near them. Their sting is also really bad even for people that generally don't have an issue with wasps. Mom steers well away from stingy things! I do believe that daddy is more afraid of them than mom though .... mom just tells them to go away and daddy acts like a girl by running away lol. Isn't that weird ... especially when mom is allergic to them and dad isn't.

This may date us a bit but mom is reminded this morning of an old Johnny Cash song - Five Foot High And Rising ... thinking about the wall of water coming into the city real soon. This is a slow moving system and its going to cause more flooding ... sure wish mom could have stayed home from work ... then again we always wish that lol.

Have a great day. V4U. Hugs.

  Hi BooBoo Bee Girly,
Well at the time mom had her tooth extracted the bone was already exposed but that was not bothering her. Now since the hole where the tooth was the dentist said its a sliver of bone that was growing or something like that. That's what was bothering mom and what looked like a tiny maggot on top of the sliver of bone. :(. Gross!!

Mom looks at the sight every night after rinsing with salt and water and just noticed it growing around Saturday or Sunday. The dentist said this will happen again and should call him to do the sane thing.

Now mom is thinking that she should have maybe done a root canal thingy, eventhough it would have been more costly. In hindsight it might have been better and less headache for mom in the long run.

Hugs,

Laka

  Hi BooBoo,
Laka and Pookie tell BooBoo and Cori about moms jaw and that she had dental surgery today.

She left work and caught the bus home then drive to the other side if the island to see her dentist. She was complaining of a growth on the exposed bone where her bottom left molar tooth was. The dentist called it a sliver of bone that was giving her the pain so he had to numb her jaw and saw the sliver of bone off.

Mom is taking off work tomorrow because she is in so much pain, the poor thing says Laka. I've tried to cuddle with her and give her lots if kisses but that can only Ho so far she tells Cookie.

We're not sure what to do to help mom but she slept when she came home as she was very tired. Then Pookie says that Laka woke her up cause she couldn't see mom and was squawking loudly.

So tomorrow mom is gonna be sleeping a lot so we hafta be quiet says Pookie.

Love & hugs and a vote.

  Hi Boo Boo and Cori
Happy Tuesday everybirdie, Sweetie here with your BOTM blog for the day. I so enjoy the blogs, I read them each and sometimes twice in case I missed anything. Such great information is available right here among our BC friends. It's been a rather eventual few days. Momma Deb was called on to take in an older Cockatoo, but through many conversations was able to keep him safely in his own home. This poor M-Too was severely plucked and sported a rather nasty hole ( self-inflicted) on his neck. His past owners moved suddenly and gave up him, and an Amazon to a fellow local rescue who deals with small species only. Hola, as he is named was fostered into a home of experienced Companion Parrot owners with no Too experience. After Momma told them about the need for blood work to test for diseases, need to have the wound treated by the Vet and to discover, if possible the reason he is plucking, Hola is now at an Avian Vet under-going treatment.
We, BC Companion Parrot Ambassadors have so much we can share, so much to give to the Avian World. So many of you have done so much to help others learn about life shared with a feathered Fid. Everytime you suggest a good food to someone eying various foods for their Parrot at home you are making a World of difference both to their Bird and also to those whom speak with. It does matter. A few shared words of wisdom can save an innocent Parrot years of neglect, or re-homing. It is better to dissuade someone getting a bird, then remaining silent. From experience I see it often here, in my forever home. People visit, and OH I LOVE THAT ONE! I always wanted one of those? What is it? Can IT talk!? Oh they certainly are told the facts no holds barred. We are loud, messy beyond words, destructive sometimes, expensive, eat only the best out-of-season fruits and can be down right nasty when upset, hormonal or angry. People leave with a new understanding of life with a Parrot. It is not all that TV version of the Macaw on the shoulder talking in cognitive sentences, or a small, flitting bird singing happily in its barred prison.
Mom says she is going to keep close tabs on Hola, so he doesn't fall through the cracks, and disappear forever. She has arranged with the very BEST Cockatoo Sanctuary she knows of in Canada to take him there to live forever. There he will be safe, cared for and loved dearly by the owner, and volunteers.
I want to encourage everyone to get involved in some small way. Some of you have done quite a lot to education people about Companion Parrots. Not everyone has that ability, but we can all offer to be an advisory, to offer help to owners through animal shelters, or a Vet office. You might be surprised how willing they are for someone to refer people to with bird problems.
PLEASE keep sharing your stories they are fabulous.

Come visit me, SKY, Little Angel, jesse & SWEETIE, Let's talk Parrot for May's BOTM.

  Hi BooBoo
How awful and inconsiderate of that neighbor to come out with his jackhammer and then to burn and put fumes in the air like that so it infringed on your time outside!I can't believe they allow burning there still, our burning season ended by May 1st.We have a Baltimore Oriole coming here and Mom still hasn't had the time to put up the hummer feeders or the Oriole feeder yet, hopefully she'll get to them tomorrow,it was so funny to see the oriole in the birdbath here. How awesome to have the hummers coming to your feeders there and it was good you at least got two showers in before the neighbor forced you all inside.
This morning was a bright but cool sunny morning with the highs of 72 lows of 60 right now its cloudy dark and 70 cold degrees.Mom got us all up this morning after she got dad off to work and cleaned our cages and fed us and swept our room and then proceeded to get all the laundry washed and on the line. Then she made a ricotta cheesecake and a crustless pumpkin pie.Dad came home around 1:30pm and he got the grill out and all set up for our BBQ and while he did that Mom went and got the hamburgers and the hot dogs and rolls and condiments on the tray.Dad brought two deck chairs down to the lawn and while we stayed on the deck they ate on the lawn by the grill, the day kept getting colder and colder and the sun never came back out!Mom,dad and all of us had a nice relaxing time enjoying the BBQ until a big hawk came circling low in the sky over us!Mom looked up along with dad and couldn't believe the wingspan on that thing nearly 5 feet wide!Mom jumped up and ran to the deck and hauled both our cages inside the door.I can't tell if the hawk smelled the burgers and hotdogs or US!Mom wasn't taking any chances on that though. Then after Mom and dad were done eating,Mom took everything inside and cleaned up and then she and dad went out back to get the laundry in.There was so much of it and dad helped Mom get them off the lines for her and then as Mom folded the laundry,he took all his stuff upstairs and put it away. Now Mom is deciding whether to close all the windows or just leave some open for a while longer. The sun was nice while it was out but it never lasted long!
Wishing you a greyt Memorial day and I'm sending you all my love along with warm birdie hugs and soft beakie kisses sweet Blue Girl!Loving you always and forever,Dixie

  HELLO FROM FINNEGAN
Hi BooBoo,
Don't faint! Yes, it's really me in the feathers. Well, here I am apologizing for being absent again, but Momma says that that’s probably the way it will go all summer and into the fall. Skin brother stayed for a weeklong visit. Yipee! I just love that guy! Momma says she does, too. It’s always so fun to have him around. He makes me laugh! We're expecting quite a bit of company this summer from all the skin sisters, brother and grandkids.

We had our bird club meeting last Sunday. Momma always has to spend Sat. cooking for it ‘cause it’s a yummy potluck. Last Monday Momma took our Goffin’s, Dolly for her visit with Dr. O. in Toledo. That takes up most of a day since it’s an hour and a half drive each way. Dr. O. seems to think that Dolly is improving on her regime of meds. She has ABV and has seizures, but they are improving, and she isn’t having very many anymore.
The weather is getting really nice here and we can be out on our porch everyday now. And guess what? We have baby swans after all! The parents came out on the lake yesterday with their four little cygnets! They are so cute…little tiny gray fluff balls! Just thought you’d like to know. Hope you're having a lovely Memorial Day. Remember our fallen heroes!
Love and Hugs from Finnegan

P.S. Is everybirdie having the same problems we have been having for about a month now? Whenever we click on the votey button, everything below the main pic disappears! This is very frustrating, making it extremely difficult to navigate the pages!

Come visit me, Finnegan - Thanks for your votes!, Daisy - R.I.P. - BOTW 9/17-9/23/07 & Miss Lucy Blue - Thank you for my hatchday wishes!.

  Hi Boo Boo and Cori
Hello everybirdie, Sweetie here on this damp, dull Monday herein Napanee, Ontariot. With less then a week left in this month, I wanted to take a brief look at a few of the blogs you left on my page to share with everyone. I have enjoyed reading all of your comments, and encourage everybirdie to share in the discussion. I was reading this morning and came across Miss Chyna's blog. It brought back many memories to me about my beginnings here in the Sky Flock. Chyna was very blessed indeed that her Momma and Daddy found her when they did. Dirty, hungry and sick she was being sold to whoever had the money to take her away. What a shame some people look at us and only see a value sign written in dollars. My story as you all know was different, but in a sense was also based on money.
Sometimes birds arrive into home with hidden illnesses, but there are a lot that were sold or given away because they were sick and their former owners did not or could not afford the money to have them treated by a Veterinarian. I am asking to see how many of you were outwardly ill when re-homed? How many were being housed in sub-standard, dirty conditions? How many of you were without food, or being given poor, low quality or incorrect foods?
My Momma Deb feels there should be standards set for those who retail Companion Parrots whether a private owner or as a business (Pet Stores, Breeders etc). In general the animal welfare laws of our countries are behind the times, lack sufficient depth to make necessary changes, and fall short in the juridical system. Laws set to protect us many times lead to fines, or a probational period of "owning or possessing an animal." Many of you may recall the tragic murder of Ozzie an CAG in Alberta Canada. Stolen from her front porch and brutally abused her murderers, three teens got away with a crime that united the Parrot World to fight for stiffer sentences, and more explicit laws to be written to protect ALL animals.
Many have shared this month that they have seen sick Companion Parrots sold in Pet Stores. Often when this fact is brought to staffs attention, they shrug it off and do nothing. Few chain stores will spend the money to take an ill bird to a Veterinarian for treatment. After all it effects their profit margin. Many times when an ill bird is pointed out it is removed from the display cage to die alone in the back of the store. Some stores even have made it their "policy" that sick animals, birds included be "humanely" killed by placing it into a box in their freezer. That is not humane, freezing to death, alone in the dark. Some stores have admitted that they are told by "head-office" that this is how they are to treat sick animals in the store.
Bird Channel members are a small group, but we have a voice to cry out for changes. We are not a commodity. We are loving, feeling, sensitive Creatures that deserve respect, care and to be loved for who we are!

Come visit me, SKY, Little Angel, jesse & SWEETIE, Let's talk Parrot for May's BOTM.

  Hi Booboo
Maybe you'll get out today for a little while, it's another beautiful day.
Today we are remembering those who gave their lives for our country. Mom's parents both served, and mom's brother just brought out a newspaper article from WWII honoring her dad and 3 of his brothers who were all serving. the article mentioned the silver star her dad earned, too.
Folks at the center were busy this weekend. They got the shade cloth over a new enclosure where they will keep more hutches for RVS species like ground hogs and skunks, and built 2 new aviaries to share the same space. The good news is that there's only one groundhog out there right now. She also did outdoor raccoon areas today. After a sweaty morning at the outdoor cages, she put up possum food, did dishes and a little filing before coming home to change for the pool.
The afternoon was glorious, lots of folks at the pool, lots of sunshine as well. Now mom is home where she will water plants if it doesn't rain, take care of us, and make a little dinner. Tomorrow morning mom has an eye appointment, so we will try to get online, but if her eyes are dilated or scratchy, maybe not until late in the day.
I hope you are having a great day and getting lots of sunshine, cuddles, and scritches. Hugs, Willie

Come visit me, Gizmo, I miss you, sweet boy, Willie, Peppino, Divo & Falco.

  Hi Boo Boo!
I'm happy to hear that you had some time outside. I hope that your neighbor finished up their project soon, so that things quiet down. Pedro was outside yesterday with mom and he was wearing his harness. Susan will also wear a harness. I don't like them, so when I go tout, I have to go outside in a travel cage. Have a good week.
