I was looking for a small to medium sized parrot for a while. I went to a local aviary and saw several nice birds but when I came across the sun conures I noticed this especially cute little bird who caught my attention as much as I caught his. He had colores like no other I had seen at the time (and he was a baby). He perched on my finger and looked at me with those beautiful and curious eyes. I knew then he was meant for me so I took him home and the rest is history :). Awards

Hi! My name is Kiwi

I am a Sun Conure from Chantilly, VA.

8 years old   M

Sun Conure

Popcorn and fruit loops.

One specific perch outide of my cage where I can watch almost everything that goes on in the household in a given day.

Stuffed toys. I will "attack" them unless they are placed in specific places in my cage.

I love to take showers with my mama on my shower perch; ride around on her shoulder, drink from her glass with her and give her kisses. I also enjoy the nice head and tummy massages I get from my mama.

I make a rhythmic beating sound on the top of my water bottle or cage bars. Its funny. My Mama doesn't understand why i do it but she is sure it means something..

Eat, play, sleep, chew on everything and look pretty..

Apollo (and Gandalf too!) just flying by to check in on you and Mozart. How is everything going? Gandalf is now saying " Apollo! No Apollo" however not sure where the 'no' came from. Mom never tells me no! :) I think he is just feeling naughty because mom has told him no before, so he is just changing things up to look like I am a naughty birdie!
Anyhow, just thinking of you. Hope all is well!

What do you think of all this snow Kiwi?
Hey there Kiwi,
Thanks for writing back.We are very SNOWED IN, as I know you are too! As you probably know, the flightsuit is a bird diaper, and thats why Mommy is trying so hard to get us to wear one. We like to be out of the cage alot, so that would really cut down on the poop messes Mom has to clean. Mommy is afraid she'll hurt us trying to get it on, and believe me, we ain't cooperatin! May have to ask Tammy (DJF)to help us learn, and practice.
How is Mozart? How old is he now? I'll bet he is lots of fun! Well, here's a vote for you Kiwi!

  Hi from Lexie the tiel!
Good Morning Kiwi!
we've been trying to find another bird owner close to where we live in Centreville, VA. Mommy is a new bird owner, and is trying to get us to wear one of those "flightsuits", (bird diaper) Have you ever worn one? Wish we could meet a local neighbor who is a bird owner, we think it would be helpful. In Centreville, it looks like there are only budgies. (Atleast who are on the bird channel!) We'd like to meet more of a "parrot" family. There aren't many around! Here's a vote for you,

  Hiya Kiwi!!
Apollo here! Thanks for stopping by!! So you have a new flock mate, huh? Not too keen on him/her just yet? Well, maybe thats because you are a only fid right now and you see your mama giving someone other than you attention. I completely understand that! After me came luca, Lyzo, Lola and Clyde and I still get a little jealous and become a monster from time to time. :) Don't bully the baby too much because eventually the little grey will no longer be a baby and will pack a mean bite with his powerful chompers! In time I think you will be ok. Your mama loves you and you don't need to be jealous. Soon you will see that and start to behave nicely. It's nice to have a flock mate to chat with and preen you when you have nasty little pin feathers. If you are nice to the baby now, he will always be your friend. I wish Gandalf liked me but I have Raven to preen me. At first he attacked me but now it's me who bullies him! :)
Good luck my friend, and tell your mom to get the new baby on BC so we can visit the new addition!
Vote for you!

We are glad to announce that Sunny is back to 100% again. She has also lost 3 grams of weight with another 8 grams to go. The vet said I should be able to lose all the weight in two weeks or less.

Freezing rain is horrible and we hope that you don't get any of that stuff! Our winter here has been very mild. We hope that keeps up!

We aren't crazy about pedicures either. Mom does it and we put up a good fight when she does! It's probably time for another one soon! Got to get that beak filed nice and sharp for when she does!

  Hello, Kiwi!!
I am doing just fine this morning. My human sister gave Comet and I half a Nuter Buter cookie. You know, those ones that are shaped like a peanut, well, I ate it and it didn't sit well with me. The vet did a gram stain on me and it came back totally negative so it was just the cookie that didn't agree with me. I am back to normal this morning and mom is letting out a sigh of relieve! The vet also told mom I still need to lose weight. There is a scale from 1 to 5, 2 and three being the best. Well, I am a 'good 4' and at my age of 12, I need to lose the weight or face fatty liver disease or a heart attack. He showed mom how to feel my breast and tell where I am on the weight scale. I need to lose 8 grams total and be maintained there. That means 1/4 t. seed and 1/4 t. pellets twice a day and nothing more for the rest of my life! That will also stop my breeding habits cold! Guess there won't be any raiding of Comet's dish anymore!!! V4U!

  Hi again, Kiwi!
Well, Sunny's blight began after she had laid four eggs after laying another clutch of six about 3 weeks prior . Mom was sitting at the computer, which is in our room, and she noticed that Sunny was walking and acting funny. Then she started throwing up, and throwing up and throwing up! Then you could really tell she was in distress and something was terribly wrong. Of course, it was after 6 PM when all the vet offices close. She did call a local animal hospital but they didn't take birds but they told her about an emergency animal hospital about a half hour away that would see birds. Mom called them and then headed out. The doctor examined her and said she was egg bound and the egg was soft because she had depleted her body of calcium. The egg was too soft for Sunny to push it out. It is a very serious and life threatening. She needed to stay in the hospital. First they would try injections of calcium to see if the egg could become harder so Sunny could push it out or if that didn't work, surgery to break the egg an suck it out. They tried the calcium injections plus other meds to help stop the vomiting. Well, after three days, it worked! She was just hours away from surgery! She was then well enough to go home with six medicines, all given orally for ten days! That was a treat for mom and Sunny! She was then seen by her vet and he suggested Lupron shots to stop the egg laying. It works for a few months and it did the job beautifully. Everything was going along great and then Sunny got a very bad crop infection a few weeks later. It was back to the vet and more medicine for 10 days! This all happened in June and July. Sunny is doing great now but mom needs to get her weight back down. Hens need extra weight to sit on their clutch so they eat as much as possible and that's when the hormones kick in. Sunny needs to lose 10 grams. That means 1/2 teaspoon of seed and 1 teaspoon of pellets a day, nothing more. She should lose it in a week or two. Boy, Kiwi, you are lucky you are a male! That's Sunny's story and we hope you keep warm and safe and we will be back tomorrow with another vote and blog for you!

Birdie hugs & kisses,

Come visit me, Sunny & Comet, dearest Comet....

  Good morning, Kiwi!
Well, it's the day after the storm, or lack of one. We maybe got three inches when they were calling for 6-7 inches. We must admit it looks so pretty outside! Mom says it might look pretty but it is very cold outside and getting even colder this weekend with an cold front moving in! BBBBRRRR! We are very happy to be indoor birdies with heated perches! We truly have a charmed life! Mom has lots of things to do today and it looks like we will be in the cage most of the day. We did get our morning head scratches though and we loved every scratch! What is going on around your cage? Any gossip? Nothing here. The only thing is that Sunny is going back on her diet. She is up to 103 grams again and the vet would like to see her at or close to 88 grams. Sunny is a chronic egg layer. She was hospitalized last June because of it. Thankfully, she laid that pesky egg with the help of the emergency animal hospital. She was low on calcium and the egg was too soft and got stuck inside her. After giving her calcium, the egg hardened up and she was able to lay it. She then went to her vet and has given a series of three Lupron shots over six weeks. It's birth control for birds! The vet then said if mom keeps her weight low, it won't trigger the egg laying hormones. It worked! But Sunny is back to eating like crazy and mom needs to crack the whip again and get her weigh low again. Sunny wishes mom would get rid of the darn scale!!! Diets suck! Mom says there is snow to be shoveled so it's off the computer for us! have a great day around the cage, Kiwi!

Friends in feathers always,

  Gandalf here!!
Hi Kiwi!!
Yes, as Apollo said, I am a bit of a grump when it comes to other parrots. However I was like this before mom brought me home. I do like to hear all my flockmates and if ever they are not around so I can hear them, I panic! But playing with them? Nope. Mom thinks another grey for me may be the ticket, however a birdie physchologist said I may even get nasty with another of my own kind. Oh well, what can I say? For you and your new Baby grey coming, I agree with Apollo. Become friends when the grey as a baby! I'm sure the baby has a great disposition and will feel lonely without his clutch mates, so I am sure you and Baby Grey will do just fine!
Sorry I could not be more of a help, I am just grumpy! hee hee.
Take care!

  Hi Kiwi!!
Apollo here! Thanks for visiting me back! You are so sweet. :) So you are getting an African Grey as a flock mate? Well, let me share what I can with you. :) When I came to the flock, Raven (the Nanday) was the oldest followed by Gandalf the Grey. They were both already 2 years old. Gandalf was a little....territorial, defensive, and sort of mean with other birds. He never liked Raven and Raven never liked him after Gandalf tried to eat Ravens face off (no matter how hard mom tried when Gandalf was a baby, he just did not like other birds), so Raven became my BFF. Sometimes Gandalf would lunge off his cage to attack us (Raven proudly defended me and got between us.) Mom keeps us well away from each other in the Aviary. So, I would say we love to hear each other and need to be within sight of each other, but Gandalf never took to any of the conures in our flock. However, because your new grey will be a baby and sweet and impressionable, you may stand a better chance being buddies with him/her. Gandalf was the 'bully' of his clutch and even at the pet store did not like other birds (even his clutch mates!) or humans. Nobody wanted to buy him because he was very aggressive. He did, however, pick our mom and loves her very much. He is tender with her and is never aggressive with her. He also loves our Daddy too. So, to make this long story hopefully not any longer (hee hee), my suggestion is to introduce the two of you when the baby comes home and see how it goes. Maybe you two will be the best of friends! I hope so. I love Gandalf because he is my flock mate, but he would seriously hurt me if he could (the bully!). All parrots are different and interact with each other differently based on their personalities.
I pretty much only like Raven. Oh,I DO have a crush on Luca (our green cheek Princess) and I will always cuddle with her! But Shhhh...don't tell anyone!
Going back to Gandalf, I can tell you I have learned a whole new langauge from him! He is a talker so we all learn to say things and once he says it, all 6 of us conures repeat it too!
I hope this helps. I will let Gandalf give his version next. :) Sorry if this was so long!
Here's another vote for you!
