Hi! My name is Ollie

I am a Jardine's Parrot from Newark, DE.

6 years old   M

Jardine's Parrot

I like nuts and dried fruit.

I like to jump on my swing and play on my boing.

There's no door in the corner of my cage so I can't get out there.

He lets me chew on his wrist watch.

I get excited and fall off my boing. I'm just a baby and I'm still learning to grip..

  Hi Ollie, Connie, and Sammy!
Thanks for stopping by Tulia's page! :) So I've started researching parrot rescue and adoption in hopes of giving an unwanted parrot a second chance in a very loving home. Do you had any thoughts on what types of parrots would get along well with a Poicephalus? How do all of your birds get along? Tulia is an only bird right now, so I want to make sure I choose a bird that will get along well with her. I've been reading a lot about the process but would love to hear first-hand how different species of parrots interact and how you've successfully added an additional bird/birds to the flock. Let me know if you ever get a chance, or just swing by and say hi sometime again :)

Come visit me, Tulia.

  Perches for Jardines
I think the key is to have a variety of perches with different perch diameter so that the bird's feet don't get tired. Ollie has a variety of different diameters in his cage and he doesn't seem to favor one over another. I like the perches made from natural branches, they usually have offshoots of different thickness and the bird can chew on them if he wants to.

Come visit me, Connie, Ollie, Sammy & Scooter.

Thank you so much for your help. Our mom actually got that book and just finished reading it. You are a right, a wealth of information. She is now trying to talk to individual bird owners to get a feel for some people's individual input / experiences. Unfortunately there are none to visit near us at the moment but have spoken to a few stores and breeders and there should be more in the late spring and summer. So we will check out as many as we can to learn about their personalities :)

Could we ask you one last question? We know variety is important, but can you give us an approximate perch diameter or range of appropriate perch diameters? We would really appreciate it!

Thanks again!! You've been a great help!

  Jardine Parrots
I reccomend you read Guide to The Senegal Parrot and It's Family by Mattie Sue Athan and Dianalee Deter; it's an excellent source of information on the Poicephalus family of Parrots--not only on Senegals. Ollie is a lesser Jardine and we've been dealing with him since he was a month old chick. The book says that Jardines are actaully much less susceptible to phobias than other members of the poicephalus group. Ollie is an adventurous little bird; always wanting to explore everything. He doesn't seem to be afraid of anything and is now 5 months old. He's a bundle of kenetic energy and loves to be picked up and played with; he's not a cuddly bird by any strecth of the imagination, but from what I've read that will probably change when he's over a year old. The Jardine song is very melodic and not as loud as our little green cheeked conure. His calls sound like pleasant whistling, "Wee, wee!" He likes to go for rides in the car when we've taken him places, and he doesn't mind being picked up by friends of ours that have visited the house.

I'm sure that everyone has an opinion, but our experience has bore out what the authors of the afforementioned book have said about the species. Some people say that Jardines are nippy, we've found him to be less so than our little contrary conure. He obeys the "step up" command without hesitation no matter what he's into. The advantages, we feel, of having a male over a female is that males are more prone to learn to talk and that you don't have to deal with egg binding issues that some female birds have problems with. We had a female cockatiel and as she became older her eggs became softer and more difficult for her to lay inspite of giving her mineral and oster shell supplements. Ollie hasn't spoken yet, but it often sounds like he is trying to form words, especially in the morning.

My advice to you is to spend some time with prospective Jardines if possible and learn their personality traits. Every bird is different. Ollies brother, who we also considered buying perfers the company of women to men apparently and he became standoffish towards the end of his weaning process. I think, upon exploring it further, that you'll find that the Jardine has fewer issues than the Myers, Senegal, or brown heads and is a good size and have stimulating personalities.

Come visit me, Connie, Ollie, Sammy & Scooter.

  Hi again Ollie!
Thanks so much. We are so excited. You're a Lesser... is that right? Mom really wants a Jardine's but has heard that they don't always ship well because they are prone to trauma / phobias. I was wondering if you did ship and had any issues with this, or have read or heard about this. Is there any reason you chose male over female? Also, could you tell us about what kind of diet you're on? And finally, last question, we promise: just how big are you? Mom is trying to get the shopping done beforehand but can't figure out the right perch sizes and things like that. She keeps reading lots of conflicting info.

Sorry for all the questions, we are just trying to learn all we can!! Mom says tons of thanks in advance!

Come visit me, Larrot, Charles Kingsley Wentworth & Theodore.

Hi Ollie,
Here is a vote for you, and I thought you might want to learn a little about this wonderful website you have signed up for.
BC is a social club for birds. Don't let anybirdy tell you it is an information site for your parronts; it just isn't true. It is for and all about making friends with all the other birds here. We have virtual parties that are a blast, and I know you would love attending one. The next one that is currently scheduled is the monthly milonga party (name borrowed from Argentinian Tango clubs). You can find the details on the Milonga 2010 page #165848. To navigate to a page by number you simply go up to the URL bar at the top of the page and change the number at the end of the string to 165848 and hit enter. It will take you to the page you want. (Your own personal number is the one currently showing.)
Another fun thing about the BC is voting for your favorite birds. There are awards for BOTW (Bird of the Week) and BOTM (Bird of the Month), and there is always some birdy campaigning for your vote. You can see who is running by going to the BOTW schedule on Rocky's page #16847. Currently cute little Fwanky #129662 is running for BOTW. The BOTM candidate can be learned by going to the BOTM Calendar page #144395 (maintained by moi!!), and the wonderful bird who is running for BOTM right now is my dear friend Floop, a very handsome macaw. He sure would like to meet you and would certainly appreciate your vote. You can vote once each day, and every vote counts toward that bird winning an award.
I truly hope you enjoy your time on BC. Come by to visit me. I sure would like to get to know you better.
