How Do Birds Survive Winter Storms?
It’s cold out.. where do birds go for protection during severe weather such as blizzards, hurricanes, and tornadoes?

Many birds have an amazing ability to find refuge from storms and use a variety of ways to cope, depending on the species and the bird’s natural habitat. Some find protection against the cold and storms by communal roosting, often in a bird house. This shares warmth, and keeps the birds out of the wind, rain and snow. cavity nesters, such as chickadees, titmice and woodpeckers, also seek out old nesting sites in dead trees or bird houses in which to roost or find protection during a storm. Nuthatches, which sometimes nest behind a loose piece of tree bark, may seek the same kind of shelter against the cold.Flocks of Rosy finches often roost in an outcropping of rock where they can get out of the cold wind.Bobwhite make a circle of the covey, huddled side-by-side, with head facing out. This allows them to share body heat, while being ready to escape in all directions, should they be attacked.Ruffed grouse take a different tactic. They dive into a snow bank, and may stay there for several days until the storm passes. The Ruffed grouse has the largest range of any grouse species in North America and winter hikers have been surprised by a startled grouse bursting from the snow at their feet. Many other birds retreat to dense, evergreen thickets where they are protected from the elements for the duration of the storm.

  HI PEPPER
HAPPY HUMDAY

The Smith’s Longspur May Be Nature’s Champion Lover
Are you the type that has an insatiable appetite for lusty affairs?
Do you seek the same qualities in a partner?
Then you’ll probably enjoy the story of the Smith’s Longspur. This bird’s 70’s swinging style is enough to make even Hugh Hefner blush.

Arctic Summers, Midwest Winters
Small like a sparrow, the Smith’s Longspur spends its summers in Alaska and Canada and its winters in the Midwest and the South, often congregating in open fields. In terms of range, then, it’s a lot like some other species. What sets the Smith’s Longspur apart is its astonishing libido.

An Insatiable Appetite For Love
At the peak of the spring mating season, the typical Smith’s Longspur copulates more than 350 times a week. The females solicit these encounters, and the males cooperate roughly half the time.Otherwise the creatures are resting and refueling—for their fall migration or just to maintain their busy love lives!

As hard as it may be to believe given the cold affecting much of the country, but spring is only 16 days away

Ice-covered by water - no way to get a foothold anywhere. HE IS BAD ON ICE

  Hi Pepper
today is World Wildlife Day—a day to celebrate the amazing variety of animals with which we share the planet and a special day to raise awareness of the plight of wildlife.

The United Nations has designated March 3 as World Wildlife Day, described by the UN as “an opportunity to celebrate the many beautiful and varied forms of wild fauna and flora and to raise awareness of the multitude of benefits that conservation provides to people. At the same time, the Day reminds us of the urgent need to step up the fight against wildlife crime, which has wide-ranging economic, environmental and social impacts and obstacles faced by those who wish to conserve populations of endangered species and their habitats all over the world.

Wildlife crime is a key issue when it comes to the conservation of increasingly dwindling environmental resources shared by humans, plants and animals. Without the help of citizens all over the globe, wildlife crime will remain a threat to our world and all who share it. Thousands of species are decreasing at alarming rates as ruthless profiteers prey on the most vulnerable populations around the world. The illegal wildlife trade is among the worst and most lucrative transnational crimes, after drugs, arms, and human trafficking. Global commercialization of wild animals and plants is a multi-billion dollar industry that results in extreme animal cruelty and severe population declines.

On World Wildlife Day, we ask that you reflect on how wildlife crime is endangering our planet, and what you can do to help.

Today, on World Wildlife Day, speak out loudly for wildlife—because they can't speak out for themselves!

  Hi Angel and Pepper
since we are still getting winter advisory warnings, more snow and temps still dropping down to the low 10s i thought i would talk about chickadees those cute little black and white balls of fluff we see flying around outside in this weather. Chickadees Are Cold Weather Machines

Though any bird that survives winter in the North amazes those of us that depend on furnaces and warm blankets, the black-capped chickadee may be the most incredible of all winter survivors. although none can compare to the emperor penguin thats for sure.

“Black-capped Chickadees have a wonderful assortment of adaptations for the winter. “Carefully hidden food items, dense winter coats, specially selected winter roost cavities, and perhaps most remarkable of all, the ability to go into nightly hypothermia, thus conserving large amounts of energy, greatly increases the chances of survival,” The ability to go into regulated hypothermia actually lowers the chickadee’s body temperature in a controlled manner, down to about 12 or 15 degrees (F.) below their normal daytime temperature of 108 degrees (F.). This remarkable adaptation allows the bird to conserve almost 25 percent of its hourly metabolic expenditure when the outside temperature is at freezing. The lower the outside temperature, the more energy conserved

“Chickadees are not the suburban wimps that some people think they are as every winter morning chickadees replace the fat they used overnight and struggle against starvation and stinging cold. even though they are tough survivors that live close to the edge of life i still find myself partial to Bue Jays as i spot their bright blue color against the white snow and hear them calling out to me every morning. at least i like to think they are calling out to me.

  HI PEPPER
March has come in like a lion in our neck of the woods and its snowing snowing, snowing. i would like to start out my campaign by talking about HUMAN POOP. More than 2.5 billion people in the developing world lack access to toilets, and a child dies every 15 seconds from diarrhea, usually the result of food or water becoming contaminated by human waste. Each year, 200 million tons of the world’s poop also goes completely untreated, ending up directly in lakes, rivers, and oceans.

in Kenya, , $324 million is lost every year due to sickness and missed work hours caused by poor sanitation. Nonprofits and businesses have experimented with what to do with human waste. Haiti is famous for distributing “composting toilets” that drastically lower the risk of contracting diseases. by collecting the poop from toilets, treating it, and selling it as fertilizer.

in Kenya Instead of composting the waste to grow food, it’s turning it into energy to cook it by distributing toilets to local families, emptying them each month, and turning the poop into briquettes. After the waste is collected from toilets around town, it’s put it in a solar concentrator that uses mirrors to heat the waste to temperatures that have been shown by the Centers for Disease Control to kill pathogens, making it safe for reuse.

Across Africa and around the world, hundreds of millions of people cook with wood and charcoal. Most charcoal comes from trees that are slowly cooked down in huge earthen ovens, removing the moisture without oxidizing the wood so that it becomes a more efficient source of heat per volume. But the process consumes a lot of trees—four tons of trees produce just one ton of charcoal, according to the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization—and with populations on the continent rising exponentially, deforestation is only increasting. Already, forest cover in Kenya has fallen to just 2 percent, and the price of charcoal is rising.

Moreover, smoke from burning charcoal indoors can be hazardous 6 percent of global diseases and 7 percent of disease-related deaths are caused by respiratory infections. poop briquettes contain one-third less charcoal than normal ones. For now the briquettes being given away for testing purposes.“When you look at the chemical composition of poop, it’s 90 percent organic matter and 40 percent carbon. So not only is there a high demand for fuel, but poop from a chemical composition standpoint already has a great composition to be turned into fuel,” he said.one major obstacle is the “ick” factor. reservations tend to disappear as soon as they try out the odorless briquettes for themselves. the proof is in the smell—or rather, lack thereof. They see it’s not smelling, it’s cooking good.”

  Hi Pepper
back in the fall mom found a small sparrow that had somehow gotten its leg tanged in a bird house filled with our doggies hair mom clips every spring for the birds making nests. there was another sparrow tangled in it also and mom thinks it was trying to help the other one that was dangling by its leg. mom had a heck of a time getting the sparrows leg out and felt the sparrow probably broke it by struggling so much. once she untangled the one sparrows leg the other sparrow became free also and they both quickly flew away before mom could check for any broken legs. today dad had the doggie outside to do her business and called for mom to come out because there was a little bird sitting on the driveway. somehow mom recognized this sparrow as the one dangling by its leg months ago from the bird house. it sat there for a few minutes and looked at mom and then it hobbled away and then flew to a nearby tree. mom knows its leg has never healed but at least it looked in good shape considering its bad leg.

I, Boo Boo, the rare blue bali mynah will be running for BOTM starting tomorrow and would greatly appreciate your votes. i don't have anything planned but will try and entertain you with some interesting facts.

  Flitzer Final February Post
THE LOST ART OF THE INTERMISSION:
.
For many years, longer films were planned with Intermisisons. the story would take a dramatic pause, the music would swell, and the audience got to take a break to use the bathrooms, visit the Refreshment Stand etc.
--
I always loved the Intermission music. Often in the older theaters, curtains would dramatically close on the Intermission, and slowly open when Part 2 began.
--
Nowadays we're forced to sit for 2 1/2, 3 hrs or more without a break.
[The Lord of the Rings films are good examples - they are long, involved, and you're lost if you had to take a break away from the screen].

Even revivals of older films will skip right over the Intermission - forcing you to shift in your seat - and hold it in for another extended period of time - ~ugh~
--
Unfortunately, after paying the high ticket-prices we need to *er* …"step away" from the film for a few minutes, missing possibly something interesting.
--
Theater owners are always conscious of how many showings they can fit in per day, but I say BRING BACK THE INTERMISSION. People *will* spend more for refreshments, and not have to miss any of the movie.

Upcoming 'Bird-of-the-Month' Candidates:

Mom is cleaning today so I will just supervise and wait for the cooking to start and see what is on the menu for the day!
Dad was in California last night but we don't know where he was heading next. He's only been in the snow a few times and has been blessed to have most of his loads in the west. He doesn't like driving in snow at all!!

Dad's Special Movie Memory:
As kids we would get to a movie theater once in a while. Mostly for a Kids Matinee.
We almost never visited the Refreshment Stand. There was one special time which was an exception.
Dad was treated to a special movie with his Mom. They went without the rest of the family -and It was an evening showing, She even bought him popcorn. Can't recall if it was a Birthday or whatever - just that it was a special night.

The film was "MARY POPPINS", which, ever since has been a special movie for Dad.

We spoke earlier this month about how a few notes of music can make a movie-memory come sweeping back. Any music from ‘Mary Poppins’ makes Dad think of that special Movie Night with his Mom.

  Flitzer on Winners and Classics
Kiddo raised an interesting topic: Films that did Not win The Academy Award for 'Best Picture', but they are now classics, many times surpassing the Oscar-winning film.
--
in the Awards Game there has to be a winner, and losers. There will be endless discussion as to outcomes, but only time makes a film a true Classic.
A couple of examples:
--
The Year: 1941. The Oscar-Winning film, "How Green was My Valley" [a personal favorite and a wonderful film], but the nominee that did not get the award was "Citizen Kane" which many feel is one of the Greatest Films Ever Made.
--
The Year: 1952. The Oscar-Winning Film, "The GreatestShow on Earth"
...same year as "High noon" and "The Quiet Man"
--
The Year: 2005. The Oscar-Winning Film, "Crash"
...same year as "Brokeback Mountain", a film which many consider a Classic.
= = =
Will this year's winner, "Birdman", remain considered the Best of the year?
or will “American Sniper”, "Boyhood" or even "The Grand Budapest Hotel" be remembered...only time will tell.

Come visit me, King Flitzer hangin at the movies.

  Flitzer Wednesday Thoughts . . .
Still in "Recovery-Mode" from Hollywood's Big Night.

--
Some of you BirdChannel friends have expressed that they don't watch The Oscars.
Dad doesn't really like the Hollywood Glamor-thing and some of the industry politics,
but we do love movies.
--
Often we are disappointed with what films and actors win the awards. That is all a part of the game. We often look back on past years with a knowing smirk, realizing that the movies we liked best that year are the ones that are still being watched and appreciated.
--
All that being said, we do like tuning in that one night a year, when Hollywood goes all-out and celebrates the talent, work and yes, the tackiness of The Hollywood Movie Machine.

Paddy Cake is the bad budgie. Piddy follows him but doesn't go near any of us and perches in a safe place to watch all the action. every time after Paddy does his dive bombing he flys to Piddy and kisses her.

dad took the doggie to the vet today to check the progress of her healing. while at the vets office the pad on the bottom of doggies toe fell off. there is a big hole there now. all the tissue inside the hole is very healthy and should regrow and fill the hole up. the vet said there was still a little necrotic tissue on the sides which will also fall off but for dad not to worry

the visiting nurse is coming tomorrow so mom was doing some cleaning today. don't forget mom was laid up with a bad back for about 4 weeks so there wasnt much cleaning done in that time period. moms back is about 90 percent better but if she overdoes it or moves in the wrong way it hurts.

we are only allowing the nurse in the dining room which is part of the kitchen and living room but she must sit at the dining room table right next to Cori who will entertain her with how loud how she can yell. hopeful she won't stay long.

  Flitzer Parties with the Stars
Inside Oscar’s Glamorous After-Parties

The night doesn’t end when the final Oscar is handed out. In fact, the party is just getting started as stars and execs exit the Dolby Theater, heading to a flurry of post-awards celebrations, including the Governors Ball, the Vanity Fair Party, Elton John’s AIDS Foundation party and more.

--
The Governors Ball
By the time celebs arrived at the Governors Ball, they were ravenous. As usual, the event was catered by Wolfgang Puck -- a fact he made sure everyone was aware of.
Before the Oscars began, he walked the entire red carpet in his chef's whites with a tray displaying some of the treats partygoers would be offered at the after-party. Among them: caviar-topped baked potatoes, chicken pot pie and mac and cheese with aged cheddar. There was also a dessert bar, though most guests skipped the cookies and cupcakes in favor of Puck's trademark mini gold-covered chocolate Oscars. The candy men were kept just feet from a station where winners headed with their real gold statues and queued up to wait for engraving.

Elton John Oscars Party
The Elton John AIDS Foundation hosted its 2015 Academy Awards viewing party in West Hollywood on Sunday. The annual event, now in its 23rd year, serves as a star-studded fundraiser for the organization, which John founded in 1992 to support HIV/AIDS care, prevention, and awareness.

John and his husband David Furnish serve as co-hosts. Gordon Ramsay is once again providing a five-course gourmet dinner, and there will be a special musical performance. John, who joined Instagram in December to document his wedding to Furnish, is now using his account to share intimate pictures from the exclusive celebration. Before the Oscars ceremony began, the music legend revealed $4.85 million had already been raised, and later shared an adorable picture of his sons watching “Uncle Neil” Patrick Harris host the show.

Miley Cyrus, Heidi Klum, Nina Dobrev, the Osbournes, Aaron Paul, Alec Baldwin, Rob Lowe are among the celebrities in attendance. Plenty more are expected to join the festivities once the Academy Awards show ends.

Flitzer ready to co-Host The Oscars
Oscar Sunday
= = = = = = = = = = = =
Singing: "It’s a wonderful night for Oscar…Oscar, Oscar!" --Billy Crystal
= = = = = = = = = = = =

Billy Crystal is my favorite Oscar Host. He has hosted NINE Times between 1990 and 2012.
As far as I'm concerned he could keep on hosting.
--
The origin of the name Oscar is disputed. One biography of Bette Davis claims that she named the Oscar after her first husband, band leader Harmon Oscar Nelson; Walt Disney is also quoted as thanking the Academy for his Oscar as early as 1932.
Another claimed origin is that the Academy's Executive Secretary, Margaret Herrick, first saw the award in 1931 and made reference to the statuette's reminding her of her "Uncle Oscar" (a nickname for her cousin Oscar Pierce). Columnist Sidney Skolsky was present during Herrick's naming and seized the name in his byline, "Employees have affectionately dubbed their famous statuette 'Oscar'". The trophy was officially dubbed the "Oscar" in 1939 by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

I am ready for a great night. We have snacks, a coffee cake, champagne and Dad'll be picking up "subs" [Submarine Sandwiches]. Just a small party.

Have a great night, everyone. ~Wings Up~

  Hi Pepper
took her to another vet for a second opinion and that vet said the sores on doggies foot from the wrapped splint is not a bacterial infection but a fungus infection. dad is now putting a anti fungal/bacterial cream on it to heal it. dad went down to the drugstore and talked to the pharmacist who said the vet had the doggie on the wrong ointment which is probably what caused the fungal infection. since the doggie is wearing her cone she can't lick the medicine so she should be ok. hopefully the cats won't get any medicine on their little paws.

not sure why the new health insurance wants to come to the house but they said this is their new policy. it sounds like they want to check the house out and make sure the parents can care for themselves and eat nutritional meals. it seems like they think the parents might be idiots.

i have decided that i like the bad budgie bothering me. when mom doesn't bring them up for playtime with Cori and me i sit on my cat stool and pout. when the bad budgie flys over to me and runs after me i get all excited. so far all we have done is chest bump. when the bad budgie goes back to his cage i hop over and sit under it waiting for him to come out.

HAPPY TGIF DAY

  Hello Pepper, Hello Angel~
I hope you are having a wonderful day! I finally have some time to get a note out! Dad has been home for a few days and is now getting ready to head out again. He was suppose to go tomorrow but there might be snow in the mountains tomorrow so he is getting a head start to avoid the snow!
Just the usual stuff going on around here. Lots of cleaning up and boring stuff like that. I have kept myself busy with toys and snacks and lots of play time with mom.
I hope your night is just perfect! Leaving a vote and a big hug! Hope you are staying warm! Spring is only 27 days away!
Love you ~ Sugar ♥

  Hi Pepper
i think doggie is more accepting of what she is going through than dad is. she still won't use her healed leg and dad took her cone off of her head so ll she wants to do is lick and so dad keeps yelling at her to not lick and mom said just put the cone on her. she doesn't mind it. true the doggie doesn't mind the cone but dad sure does.

we just started a new health insurance plan and now some nurse wants to come to the house to inspect the parents and the parents don't want her to come but are afraid if they say no the health insurance will give them problems. how the nurse will inspect dad is beyond me since dad will not put down the doggie and Cori will not stop screaming and mom will have to hide me in the bedroom and then probably the cats will come out and make hairballs.

A Sneak Peek Inside the Glamorous Oscars Governors Ball

Party Party Party

When all 1,500 guests make their way into the 2015 Oscars Governors Ball — the Academy Awards’ annual after-party — they’ll be entering an old-school Hollywood speakeasy.

The room will be adorned in plush velvets and tapestries, and will feature hundreds of black-and-white photographs from the Academy’s collections.

“The colors are very rich jewel tones – burgundies, purples, deep greens and golds,” says celebrity florist Mark Held. “We’re trying to create a different look for each table. Some tables have vintage-looking lamps, some tables are tone-on-tone purple, and for some tables, we’ve created man-made flowers out of succulents. It’s very eclectic.”
--
Aside from the stunning décor, Hollywood’s A-listers will have plenty to munch on, as chef Wolfgang Puck has created 32(!) unique dishes to serve over the course of the meal.
--
“When we do a menu for 1,500 people, we have to have enough dishes so that there’s something for everybody,” explains Puck. “Some people are vegan and vegetarian, some people don’t eat fish or don’t eat meat. Because of that, we made 32 different dishes, from a little parsnip chip with eggplant puree, which are a little Middle Eastern, to lobster rolls with bacon, which is traditional American.”
--
Other dishes include baked potatoes topped with caviar, black truffle chicken pot pies, Wagyu shortrib with squash puree, chilled sweet pea soup, and Puck’s signature Oscar-shaped smoked salmon matzo. (350 lbs. of smoked salmon will be served in total!)
--
Of course, no party is complete without some festive drinks. Piper-Heidsieck will be serving up 1,500 bottles of champagne — including about 750 of their exclusive Rare bottles — while Sterling Vineyards will be providing 2,400 bottles of wine.

  Hi Pepper
HAPPY HUMPDAY

mom heard an owl hooting tonight and it wasn't a screech owl so we are assuming the strange crie were coming from the baby owls.

today the doggie got her splint off. the vet said her bone is completely healed in her leg. when she came home she was limping like crazy and after looking at her foot it was all bloody so bcd to the vet she went. the vet said because the splint held her toes so close together they are almost like bed sores on her and of course she just wants to lick them so the vet put a cone on her head. the poor doggie. she doesn't seem to mind the cone and hopefully the pain from the sores on her foot will heal quickly

  Flitzer Wednesday Squawks
'BEST DIRECTOR'
The Director of a film helms the project - it is his vision which ends up on the screen -the scope, the mood, the pacing. He normally chooses the actors and crew that can best fulfill the work he/she envisions. Although a collaborative effort, the Director makes the big decisions and it responsible for the final product.

--
Due to strange rules of The Academy, there are 8 'Best Picture' nominees this year, yet only 5 Directors can be nominated for recognition.

In my eyes, Director RICHARD LINKLATER has been the most creative, experimental, thoughtful and accomplished director of the bunch. Although 'Boyhood' may not be his best film, I am rooting for him to win 'Best Director' this year.

  Hi Pepper
mom read this fascinating article about human DNA showing that homo sapien mated with non human animals which they considered this separate group that are not monkeys but look like cavemen and their are 4 distinct groups. now mom wants to have her DNA tested to see if she has that animal DNA.

it warmed up today to 22 and actually felt comfortable compared to the - temps we have been getting. haven't heard the animal crying today but saw a big fluffy brown bird flying around and think it might have been an owl baby crying. they make the strangest sounds.

Time for Flitzer’s Favorite Film: “The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill” (2003, Dir: Judy Irving)
This film focuses on the flock of cherry-headed conures (and a lonely blue-headed one named Connor) who flock around the Telegraph Hill region of the city and their closest human companion, Mark Bittner.

I love everything about this film. The story, the photography. The beautiful parrots.
Love to watch this movie and Squawk along, adding my voice to the proceedings.

vote4u. mom heard a animal crying outside so she has been trudging up and down the icy roads hunting for it. she hasnt heard anything since, saw no footprints in the snow and the roads are so bad nobody is out driving. hope whatever she heard found a safe place. no road crews are clearing of the roads so there is no traffic and its so quiet outside. the snow is sparkling like diamonds

Favorite Film Scores:
..................................
I love "Movie Music".
.
Music is so important in setting the mood of the film. It heightens the tension, the suspense, the romance....
Often we don't even notice the music as it is such an intricate part of the fabric of the film.

Sometimes it takes seeing a movie a few times to appreciate the score.

The greatest film composers know how to play on our emotions while we do not even realize it.
It only takes a few notes of the score to have movie memories come flooding back. We recognize the music for the shark in "Jaws" instantly, and can picture Scarlett O'Hara with just a couple notes of 'Tara's Theme'.

My Top Favorite Musical Scores for Movies:
1. "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir - Bernard Herrmann
2. "Dead Ringers" - Howard Shore
4. "Ben-Hur" - Miklós Rózsa
4. "Out of Africa" - John Barry
5. "Cinema Paradiso" - Ennio Morricone
6 "All About My Mother" - Alberto Iglesias
7. "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly" - Ennio Morricone
