I hope you are having a great day!! Still rainy and windy up here but the wind is not as bad today! Good thing cause lots of people lost power. There are tons of trees up here and a lot of them came down. Branches too. Mom's store was the only one with power so there were lots of people shopping there yesterday. They told mom that the line for the gas station was out on the street! They were the only ones in the whole town who had working gas pumps!
I'm busy munching on an apple while mom gets my notes done. Mom doesn't have to take anyone anywhere today so we spent the morning playing!
I hope your day is just perfect! Leaving a vote and a hug!

  Hi Pepper
HAPPY TGIF DAY
vulture populations are plummeting in Africa
Africa's eight vulture species have declined in number by an average of 62 percent during the last 30 years. vultures are one of nature's most important scavengers—a flock can strip a carcass in a matter of minutes.these natural recyclers, which breed slowly and need years to mature, could be extinct in Africa in the next 50 to 100 years.

poisoning from eating pesticide-laced carcasses caused as many as 60 percent of the vulture deaths recorded since the 1970s.When a large predator such as a lion kills livestock, a farmer will sometimes sprinkle poison on the carcass to kill the predator in retaliation, Vultures usually get to the corpse first. They die after eating the pesticide-laced carcasses intended for lions and other predators. Pesticides are poorly regulated in Africa, and sold as "lion killer" . many farmers don't know what the chemicals are really used for.vultures have largely disappeared from commercial farming areas where pesticide are used

Vultures often collide with the wind turbines and are crushed or are electrocuted by power lines

Vultures are also also targets for poachers, who sell their parts to people who use witchcraft. The birds are known for their tremendous eyesight, and many believe their body parts can be used to see into the future.Their brains are ground to snuff by witch doctors who believe the substance has magical powers.

The scavengers also die after feeding on carcasses left behind by poachers. Illegal hunters poison the corpses to throw off law enforcement, which use circling vultures as a beacon for illegal activity.500 dead vultures were found surrounding a pesticide-laden elephant carcass poachers had poisoned leaving the bodies to rot. terrorists groups are profiting the most from poaching affording them lucrative profits to buy guns and bombs

I hope you are having a wonderful day! It's still very pretty here and only in the 80's. Rain is suppose to come back for the weekend and we sure could use it! We are not use to being so dry for so long. Everything is yellow and I want it to be green again!
We are getting laundry done today. Mom has to work tonight but she'll have Friday night off. She is going to the library later to get me more story books and she will see what movies they have in. Friday movie night is my favorite! Even if the movie isn't good I'll still have popcorn!
Enjoy the day and I hope you get to do lots of fun things!

  Hi Pepper
the bad budgies still come over to play with me but not as much.Piddy was sick for about 3 months and lost all the feathers on her head and became scissor beaked but mom took care of her and she is fine now and grew her feathers back.

sorry its taken us so long to get back to you. it was very nice seeing you at the milonga. the milonga was very fun. we also really appreciate all the hard work that went into making all the pictures. mom can spend hours just making one let alone that many. towards the end of the milonga we got thrown off the page. every time we refreshed the page it went clear back to the beginning of the milonga. when we tried to blog our friends we kept getting pages from a week ago so mom gave up. last night mom had a headache that was killing her. when she went on bird channel the pages wouldn't load so she had to force quit about 3 times so we could even vote 4 Cidney

The bee-harming pesticides we've been fighting for years are worse than we imagined. Research suggests that neonicotinoids aren't just decimating bee colonies -- they're hurting birds too. Researchers found that in areas with high concentrations of neonicotinoids, bird populations declined every year. This means our worst fears are coming true -- neonicotinoids may be moving up the food chain and killing our birds and our bees.
For the sake of the birds, the bees, and the whole food chain, we are challenging one of the biggest neonicotinoids producers of them all: Bayer. It's not just the bees anymore. Neonicotinoids are killing our birds too. It's time to get Bayer to stop producing these chemicals. We already knew that bees, insects, and small creatures that consume neonics are facing a decline in population. Bayer's neonicotinoids are even more harmful: Birds that eat food that consumed neonics are dying too. researchers searched extensively for any other outside cause that could account for the declines: urbanization, other environmental factors, land use changes. They couldn't find one. The only plausible explanation? Bee-harming neonicotinoids. Bayer is trying to write off this scientific study. Because for companies like Bayer, profits trump saving our food chain. By speaking up, we're changing the equation for these companies and making sure they protect the bees. Here's the scary part about all this: until more research is done, there's no way to tell how far up the food chain neonics can reach.major American retailers Home Depot and Lowe's have stop selling neonics. Bayer's lawsuit against the EU for banning this chemical is being challanged-- over a million of us have spoken out against the lawsuit. We've made a lot of progress together, but we're far from done.

Kaji's mom did the pic.
I'm not looking at the food because I see MORE FOOD coming, hehehe.
I was unable to attend the milonga--mom was gone from before 7 am to after 5:30 pm, and had too many things to do to get on line even IF dad would've let her. Sunday he did NOT allow any on line time, eggcept when she was busy in the kitchen.
Mom is getting to take care of a pair of kitties at her friend's home this week. that takes a bit of time too.

I hope your day is going great! No more red around the sun today. The wind is blowing in from the coast and it cleared the air out! Wish they could figure out a way to help the people on the East side of the state! If they get wind to clear out the air, it's going to fan the fires and make it worse. They are talking about just letting the fires burn out and that could take a few months! They lost 2 fruit processing plants over there and are trying to figure out how to get the apples to market. I suppose it means my apples will cost more but there is no way around that. Maybe they can find some plants in Idaho since it's not very far away from there. Guess all the people at the plants in Eastern Washington won't have jobs now. It's going to take a very long time to rebuild them. This whole situation is just so sad and losing 3 firefighters makes even sadder.
I took 2 showers yesterday and am very fluffy today! Mom is praying the moulting is done! She is starting to get nervous that I will turn into a naked bird!hahahahahaha I don't have a bare spot on me but mom has to worry anyway. She just a mom and that's what they do!!
Enjoy the day and I hope it's just perfect!

I hope you guys are enjoying the day! We had a red ring around the sun this morning. Everyone was talking about it and trying to figure out what caused it when mom reminded them that there are huge fires over the mountain. It was pretty but it is so sad to think about what those people are going through!
Lots of Christmas lights and outdoor Christmas decor showed up last night! Yep! We are all ready for Christmas, right? I am thinking of making my own holiday to celebrate Parrots! I haven't figured out all the details yet but I know I'm going to have lots of food involved with it! I think the parronts should give the parrots presents too!! I'll work it all out!!
Enjoy the day!!

I hope you are having a perfect kind of day! I just finished some apple, cinnamon, pecan oatmeal! I must say I think this is my favorite so far! I like all the oatmeal that mom makes but the pecans were a surprise!
The rain storm we had yesterday did not help with the fire on the other side of the mountain. I guess it made it worse since it caused more wind. I feel so bad for all those people.
Mom went back to work last night and of course there was tons of work waiting for her. There is a back up person but she is in the garden and they don't want her to do anything but the garden. Kind of makes it useless to have a back up if they are not going to be able to do the work! Mom will catch up eventually.
Believe it or not, they already have the Christmas jammies out for the little ones. Mom says the baby that can wear it has not even been born yet! Talk about planning ahead! The Halloween ones are out too and all the Autumn decor. That stuff is nice to look at but I don't think anyone is ready to think about Christmas yet.
Enjoy the day!! Leaving a vote and a big hug!

  Hi Pepper
my last little tidbit from the 1500's
England is old and small and the local folks started running out of places to bury people, so they would dig up coffins and would take the bones to a bone-house and reuse the grave. When reopening these coffins, 1 out of 25 coffins were found to have scratch marks on the inside and they realised they had been burying people alive. So they would tie a string on the wrist of the corpse, thread it through the coffin and up through the ground and tie it to a bell. Someone would have to sit out in the graveyard all night (the graveyard shift) to listen for the bell; thus someone could be, ''Saved by the Bell ''or was considered a ''Dead Ringer'' And that's the truth. Whoever said history was boring ! ! !

moms kind of exhausted dealing with the cat problem especially after going through so much with our doggie and dad isn't making it easy for mom to deal with them. the vet siad it might take up to 5 weeks for the prozac to work. not sure at this point which cat or if both of them are peeing everywhere. still waiting for the test results for the female mom spent the day with a ultra violet light she bought on amazon finding all the pee spots and cleaning them. at ;east she got us outside today for a little while as she read the paper on the porch. the little rain we had cleared out the high humidity and it turned sunny with a nice breeze so it turned into a pretty day

I hope your day is going great! I've been out sitting with mom all morning and I'm having a wonderful time. I chewed on her shoelace, preened a bit. Chewed on her jeans, preened a bit. I am in a chewing, preening kind of mood today! This molt I am going through is horrendous! Mom is wondering how wild Amazons fly when they lose 4 tail feathers while molting! I can't fly so how should I know??
My play cage was all nice and clean when I came out this morning. Mom said there were so many fuzzy feathers everywhere that it took forever! When she finally finished up the cage, Merlin went over and threw up right in front of it! Hairballs!! Guess he didn't want to feel left out with all the cleaning going on!
There was suppose to be no rain this week but mom went to the car wash so of course it rained this morning! I just hope it continues on over the mountains and rains over there. There are so many fires there and they could really use some rain!
I hope you have a very fun day! Leaving a vote and a big hug!

We read that we are suppose to have 3 big snow storms between December and February this winter. It was in the Farmer's almanac. They were pretty right on with the summer prediction so we tend to believe them. Not looking forward to that. At least when you know ahead of time you can prepare.

  Hi Pepper
both out cats are suffering from kidney failure due to old age. the older 16 year old male is now on prozac to stop the peeing

In the 1500's, they cooked in the kitchen with a big kettle that always hung over the fire. Every day they lit the fire and added things to the pot. They ate mostly vegetables and did not get much meat. They would eat the stew for dinner, leaving leftovers in the pot to get cold overnight, then start over the next day. Sometimes stew had food in it that had been there for quite a while. Hence the rhyme: ''Peas porridge hot, peas porridge cold, peas porridge in the pot, nine days old''. Sometimes they could obtain pork, which made them feel quite special. When visitors came over they would hang up their bacon, to show off. It was a sign of wealth that a man could, "Bring home the bacon." They would cut off a little to share with guests and would all sit around talking and ''chew the fat''.Those with money had plates made of pewter. Food with high acid content caused some of the lead to leach onto the food, causing lead poisoning and death. This happened most often with tomatoes, so for the next 400 years or so, tomatoes were considered
poisonous.Bread was divided according to status. Workers got the burnt bottom of the loaf, the family got the middle, and guests got the top, or ''The Upper Crust''.
Lead cups were used to drink ale or whisky. The combination would sometimes knock the imbibers out for a couple of days. Someone walking along the road would take them for dead and prepare them for burial. They were laid out on the kitchen table for a couple of days and the family would gather around and eat and drink and wait and see if they would wake up. Hence the custom of ''Holding a Wake''.

We spent the day cleaning. It took forever to clean the mini blinds but at least that does not have to be done too many times a year! We washed the drapes and cleaned the fireplace too. The living room looks good now and tomorrow we will pick another room to do.

I hope you all enjoyed your Sunday. It was quiet around here. Mom had some stuff to get done and I just hung out and played for a while. Then I wanted to sit with mom so we did that for a few hours. It was fun!
We are having a short vacation for the next 4 days so I suppose I will be doing lots of supervising. Dad will be home tomorrow. He has to deliver in Seattle and then take a 34 hour break. There are very strict rules about how many hours he can drive and how much of a break he has to take. There is a computer in the truck that tells him exactly how many hours he has left to drive in a day! The truck will actually shut off if he goes over! Such amazing technology!!!
Have a great night!

Ever wondered what it'd be like to see out of the eyes of a spider, lizard or honeybee? Now you can -- at least where palette is concerned -- because University of Exeter scientists have developed free software that will let you look at things the way other animals do. You can choose from a drop-down menu to process photos in a way that converts them to another species' color scheme.

Humans and old-world primates see three primary colors, while other mammals are only sensitive to two. Birds, reptiles, amphibians and many insects, though, are sensitive to four or more primary colors as well as the ultraviolet range -- invisible to people without full-spectrum cameras.

Researchers have been using the new tool to study color changes in crabs, how camouflage protects birds from predators, and the way female faces change throughout the ovulation cycle.

last night mom went out to the patio to pick up her gardening gloves she had left out there. she heard a owl calling and it was close by to she decided to check the birdbath to make sure water was in it it incase the owl wanted to drink or bathe. it was pitch black so she couldn't see anything as she lugged the garden hose over to the birdbath. suddenly the owl let out a very close call. mom figures it must have been about 2 feet from her and was perching in the hemlock right by the bird bath. mom cleaned out the birdbath and filled it up with water and didn't hear the owl agin. tonight we finally got about 100th of an inch of rain which is better than nothing.

  Hi Pepper
HAPPY TGIF DAY
n the dog days of summer, birds seem to disappear—the dawn chorus wanes and an odd silence takes hold . The birds are still there, they’re just keeping a low profile, because they’re replacing their feathers.

After breeding, the molting season kicks in. Molt is the systematic replacement of feathers. Birds have to molt in order to survive, because feathers wear out from physical abrasion and bleaching from the sun. Once a year birds grow an entirely new set of feathers through a complete molt. As birds grow new flight feathers, they are particularly vulnerable. During wing molt, several of their feathers will be less than full length, producing gaps in their wings, so they are not as maneuverable or powerful in flight. To minimize attracting the attention of predators, many birds tend to vocalize infrequently and hide in vegetation. Birds in heavy molt tend to be scruffy overall

eastern songbirds begin replacing their flight and body feathers shortly after their young fledge. They tend to undergo this complete molt on or near their breeding grounds, migrating south after they have a new set of feathers.
western songbirds begin their migration south a bit before molting. Western summers can be extremely dry and desolate so western songbirds begging their migration south before molting. so many species go to the Mexican Monsoon region to molt where monsoon rains brings an abundance of insects on which to feed. After molting, they continue farther south to their wintering grounds. For ravens, a molt can take up to six months. For smaller birds, closer to two. But they can still fly. waterbirds like ducks and loons molt all of their flight feathers at once. As a result, they’re earthbound and vulnerable to predators for a month or more — until their full suite of feathers has been completely restored. Brightly colored male ducks grow a special set of camouflaged feathers, called eclipse plumage which are mostly brown, like they’re all females.until wing feathers have regrown and they are able to fly again.

I really didn't like him moving the cage with me in it. He even used the evil vacuum when he was done sweeping. I am not very happy with dad right now!
Our dryer is squeaking so they are going to come over and take a look at it later. Mom knows what it is already since she opened it up to look. She watched a youtube video! It's a plastic thing that covers the drum. It's a very old dryer so we are hoping to get a new one. At least it still works!
I hope you have a wonderful day and get to do lots of fun things!
Leaving a vote and a big hug!

  Hi Pepper
HAPPY HUMPDAY

An adult songbird flies in toward its nest, carrying a beakful of fresh insects for its chicks. A moment later, out pops the adult carrying a tiny white pouch in its bill Still on the wing, it drops the object into the vegetation below.

That outgoing payload was a fecal sac, a remarkable adaptation found in nesting songbirds. Nestlings, often within seconds of begin fed by the adult, excrete waste in tidy little sacs with a gelatinous outer coating. The dutiful parent bird now switches tasks, from meal delivery to waste management. By dropping the sac a safe distance from the nest, the birds tidy the nest while discarding clues a predator might use to detect vulnerable nestlings.Baby birds can't wear diapers but they do put their poop in a strong "bag" so the parents can carry it away. This bag is made of thick, strong mucus that a parent can pick up in its sharp beak and carry without puncturing.. Fecal sacs are just like disposable diapers for birds!
Within seconds of feeding, baby birds back up and poop. This ensures that whichever parent brought the food will still be there to carry away the fecal sac.

The fecal sac. For anyone who has ever changed a diaper, it’s a simple solution we can only marvel at.

by the time the baby is old enough to leave the nest it stops producing fecal sacs. this might also be a sign to the parents when it is time to force the babies out of the nest.

  Hello Pepper, Hello Angel~
I hope you are having a great day! It's been nice around here. Mom went off for a while to the market. She got me some lovely papaya, mango and almonds! I had the papaya right away! I do love papaya!
Dad is home and has been watching a movie this afternoon so I don't know if I will get to watch a movie later or not. It's okay since he's not around much and I can be nice and let him have the TV for a while. I'll still have my story later!
I hope you have a wonderful evening! Leaving a vote and a big hug!

  Hi Pepper
there is a asian virus that is killing the oak trees. so far it hasn't affected any of our oaks. most of the trees in our yard are oaks and they are very big and old. the neighbor said his tree had it but from looking at the tree laying on the ground it looked pretty healthy to us. sometimes the squirrels like to pull the tips off of the oak trees and can make quite a mess in your yard but its no big deal to pick it up. we are guessing that is why the neighbor cut down his big old oak.

  Hello Pepper, Hello Angel~
I hope you are having a great day! I certainly didn't get many blogs done this weekend at all! It was all mom's fault. She was tired and every time she sat down to type for me she would start to fall asleep! I didn't want any bird to get some weird looking blog because she was too tired to type! She can't spell well on a good day so you can imagine what it would be like if she was sleepy!
Only one more night and then we have our weekend! Can't wait! Dad should be home tomorrow sometime. He said he did his laundry out on the road so he wouldn't have to spend his days off washing clothes! I am betting he will still have a load or two with the bedding and other stuff from the truck.
It has really cooled off here and I am one happy bird!! I am still molting a bit and mom is wondering if the heat makes it worse. She tried to find out but couldn't find a good answer. I'm still taking showers and keeping myself comfortable! I think it's nearly done now! I won't have to worry about it for a while!
When mom went on break this morning a 6am she saw a hawk circling the wetlands behind the store. There were a group of crows out there trying to get the hawk to leave! Mom was amazed that he didn't attack one of them because he certainly was a lot bigger! I guess crows know no fear!hahahahahaha
They finally gave up and left and the hawk kept circling!
I hope your day is just fabulous! I am looking forward to football season! We never really watch the games because it makes mom nervous!hahahahaha Dad is not a football fan! Leaving a vote and a big hug for you both!

  Hi Pepper
We often call the solstice "Midsummer," but it's actually only the beginning. August 1st is Midsummer. the birds have stopped singing. No longer are we awakened at 4AM by the dawn chorus.

Many birds – wrens, robins, and others – may raise more than one brood in a breeding season. Depending on what part of the country you call home, your local birds may still be feeding fledglings, or those young ones might be completely independent by now. This is the time of year when a lot of birds begin to look shabby. Crows are missing feathers, and male Mallards look almost like females. [Listen to Male Mallards Disappear] Northern Cardinals and Blue Jays can be positively bald! It's their annual molt. Or one of two or more for some birds. American Goldfinches lose their bright summer colors in order to blend in with their dull winter surroundings. They'll molt again in the spring to show off those bright yellow feathers.

Some birds even lose the ability to sing after the breeding season is over. The part of the brain used for singing shrinks to lighten the bird's body mass. During the non-breeding seasons of fall and winter, most birds don’t need to sing to establish a breeding territory and attract a mate. Their lighter body mass makes them more agile and thus more likely to evade a predator during their winter foraging.

  Hi Pepper
HAPPY TGIF DAY

mom decided to take a break for a little bit and go to the nearby county pool. it was a beautiful day and not too hot but nice and sunny. when she got there they closed the pool because a doody was spotted floating in it. last week when mom decided to go to the pool just as she got there they closed it because they found someone floating in the water. mom doesn't know what happened because there was nothing in the news about it and nothing on the internet. there sure were a lot of police and ambulances called so maybe the revived the person.

  Hello Pepper, Hello Angel~
I hope you are having a wonderful day! It's going to be a billion degrees here again!hahahahahaha One month of summer to go and hopefully my rain will come back!
Russell Wilson is going to be a Seahawk until 2019!!! I guess he knew how much this 12th bird wanted him to stay! He is going to get a gazillion dollars! Well close to that I think! Now we have to worry about whether or not they have the money to keep the other players! I'm sure they make a whole bunch of money on merchandise so I think they can afford it! The players jersey's are 100$ each and this state is filled with people wearing them!
Training camp opens today and Taima is there! I can't wait to see the pictures! I follow him on Facebook and love to see all his pictures. Wish I had a wing span like that!!!
Have a great day! Leaving a vote and a big hug!

  Hello Pepper, Hello Angel~
I hope you are having a wonderful day!! I think it's hot just about everywhere now. I think we are going to break the record for the most days over 90 today. I guess they have been keeping the record for about 120 years.
Seahawks training camp starts tomorrow and Taima the hawk is coming over for a meet and greet! Wish we could get up there to see him but mom has to work the whole weekend. Everyone is very excited for football to start again. It seems rather dull around here without it!
We are finishing up laundry and getting things ready for mom to go back to work tonight. It's not much fun but I do have some new toys to keep me occupied!
Did you guys have fun with the grandson over there? Does he like to visit with you? The niece Maddie comes over sometimes and she reads books to me! She'll be 3 in a week and she is just about the only little human I like! Most of them move too quickly and make me nervous!
I hope your day is just fabulous!! Stay cool and enjoy it!
Love, hugs and a vote ~ Sugar ♥
