  October BOTM POST number nine
Hi everybirdie, Jesse here with today's BOTM Adventure POST. " SHHHHHH, we don't wanta wake up those crazy trees again."
"Turn three times and head to the East" Jenny-Lynn reads the sign, " what do you suppose this is all about Jesse?"
"HHHHMMM" Jesse rubs his chin, thinking deeply, as he looks around at the land before them, " not too sure but if the sign says head East we better do it." Jesse pulls his compose from his backpack and gets his bearings. " Ok, this way!"
"WAIT!" Chyna yells, "the signs says we have to turn three times first."
Jesse shrugs, shaking his head, "Girls" he thinks to himself. "East is East, but ok" he motions for everybirdie to stand still.
"The sign says we have to turn three times then head to the East" Jesse begins to turn in a 360 degree circle, " One, Two, Three" he stops and waits as the last of the group completes their third turn. "WOW, that makes me dizzy" Jesse giggles as he tries to get his balance.
"Alright, let's go this way. The road is narrow so be careful not to get too close to the trees and bushes as we get down this hill." Jesse strides off, happy to be moving as far away from the Enchanted Forest as he can get. The sun brilliantly shines down upon the birds as they enjoy the walk along the old dirt road heading towards the Castle in the East.
"Look, ahead" Rio says to Jesse, " what's that?" he points to a shiny area off to the side of the road about a quart mile away.
"Apache? Did you bring your binoculars?" Jesse asks
"Yes, of course, can't be a good scout without them" Apache pulls them over his head, and hands them to Jesse. " It's a lake. It must be the BC Lake" he hands the binoculars back to Apache. "we're nearly back tot he Castle" Jesse breathes a sigh of relief. Soon he could get the Macaw Guards and go back to find his two missing friends. His happy thoughts are shattered by a frantic cry.
" Cydney and Snowflake. They're gone" Raffi cries, as he rushes around, searching for them. " Where's Pepper? and Gus?" the others begin a frantic search for their friends. I saw Snowflake and Cydney, over there by that red rock. The boys spread out to search, but not a feather can be found from their missing friends. Tears fill their eyes as they return to the milling group, and tell them their friends have disappeared into thin air.
"We have to get out of here, and back to the Castle. Come on, let's hurry" Jesse leads out in a quick waddle as fast as his legs will carry him. The others scramble to keep up as they continue down the road drawing closer to the Lake. As the walk, the breeze begins to pick up, and clouds begin to blow blocking out the warm sun. Jesse feels a shiver of dread as he rushes towards the East..

  October BOTM POST number seven
Hello everybirdie. Jesse here with today's BOTM Adventure Post. I know right now, I sure wish I'd brought my cell phone with me.
Jesse and Jake head across the room, following the sound of the voice, with Kiddo and Sweetpepper joining them.
"Let's grab hold and pull." The birds grip the handle with all their strength, " One, TWO, THREE!" Jesse yells and they tug as hard as they can. They pull, and pull, with all their might. Suddenly, the handle gives, and a small door springs open in the wall. " We did it, we got it open" Picabo calls out happily, as sunlight beams in through the opening. "We're free"
Jesse smiles, happy to think that they would be out in the sunlight in a minute, and soon the Castle macaw Guards would be there to help find his friends Cori and Sugar."I bet their already outside ready to jump out and frighten us as we step into the sunlight." he thinks to himself as he starts to climb through the small door.
"Come on,it's beautiful outside. I'm glad to be free to that corn maze for good." Jesse calls over his shoulder as he steps into the open again. The trees look pretty with all their colorful leaves stirring in the gentle breeze.
Quickly the others rush out through the small door and shake their feathers to calm themselves, after being in the pitch dark, dusty room. They smile as the sunlight beams onto them, and the soft breeze stirs the leaves on the ground around their feet. They start off in the direction of the Castle, looking for help in locating their missing friends. They hadn't gone very far at all when suddenly a terrified scream rose from amongst them. Every head snaps round just in time to see Cookie disappearing into the leaves of a nearby tree. The birdies yell in fright, as the trees and bushes around them spring to life, branches and limbs reaching out to catch hold of them, as they dart and twist to get free. Screams shake the air as birdies are gripped by the leaves and twigs, pulled high up into the air.
"Jesse" Elvis yells, as he dashes to stay free of a vine, trying to wrap around his foot. " help, we gotta save the others"
Elvis, leaps just in time and the vine snakes back into the darkness below the tall Oak tree nearby.
Sky dodges a limb, grabbing BB by the waist and hurrying behind a large boulder away from the trees. " You stay here, I'm going to save our friend Cookie. Sky hops, and jumps vines and limbs that fly forwards to capture him, as he works towards the tree where Cookie is yelling for help. " I'm here buddy." Sky ducks as a branch reaches for his head. " That's it. Enough" he takes out his pocket knife and cuts the vine around his foot, and snips the end of the branch as it reaches forward once more.

  October BOTM POST number six
Happy Sunday to all my BC friends. I hope you all are having an enjoyable weekend. Thank you to each of my friends for their votes, messages and encouragement. I hope your ready for today's adventure in the Corn Maze.
"AUHHHHHH!" Sky coughs, as dusty air fills the room. "What is that awful smell? "
"I don't know buddy, but it wasn't me who did it." Jake laughs loudly, sneezing as the dust swirls and turns in clouds around them. How can that dust blow everywhere when we haven't moved?"
Looking from one to the other, their eyes big. One by one the group files into the stinky, dusty room and crowds together in the damp, blackness. "Everyone here?" Jesse asks
The room is alive with answers. " CORI? SUGAR?" No answer comes.
" Has anybird seen Cori or Sugar?" Jesse questions fearful of what might have become of them in the darkness
" After a moment of puzzled questions and answers, " NO, last time I saw Sugar or Cori was when we were by that hole in the wall, where the maggots where." Pookie and Laka reply. Laka's pretty face pales at the thought of what might have happened to her friends.
"I'll go back and look for them" Raffi says, Cinn-A-Bunn joining him, as they lave the room and feel their way back down the wall. Sky and Jesse rush to catch up, as the four boys search for their missing friends. In the gloomy room, the others stand restlessly waiting. Fearing what fate might have befallen their missing companions.
"We should have gotten to the hole by now. It wasn't this far Jesse" Cinny says
"Yeah, where did the hole go?" Raffi asks concern in his voice, it should have been back a ways in the other direction. " Let's go back, we must have missed it somehow." The four boys turn and retrace their steps. Arriving at the door frame once more they step inside. " DID they show back up?" Jesse asks hopefully. When he hears that negative responses he swallows the lump in his throat.
" I say we go onwards, get outside and go get the Castle Guards to help search. They likely found a way out and are waiting to scare us when we step out the door." BB says, looking at Sky her eyes filled with tears. " I know they're ok, you'll see" Sky pulls her close and hugs her tightly, " we'll find them sweetheart."
"Let's all check out this room carefully for the way out. Stay close so you can feel each others wings and us your feet and wings to feel for the door out of here." Jesse instructs the group. They make their way to the walls, and start to run their wing tips over the icy surface.
"I found something right here" Picabo says, touching a handle made of wood, attached to the wall in front of him. " It must be a trap door outside."

Day 29--Igonish Surfin' Lessons with Pookie
Good morning everybirdie, Angel Girl here from the warm, sunny Ingonish beach with today's BOTM blog. It is awesome tanning by the ocean, as the waves roll in softly. We have been having a blast swimming in the ocean, and getting ready for a few quick surfing lessons. I'm not so sure on the bird on a board thing, but it sounds like fun, and I know Little Angel, Dixie and Laka are really good at it. Pookie is gonna give us some tips and pointers on how to surf. Should be lots of fun, and he's a real pro.
" Angel Girl, come on, time to take surfin' lessons" Kaji and Lizzie call as they head to the other end of the beach, were a large number of birds are eagerly waiting for Pookie to instruct them on the hows and why's of safe surfin'. Pookie, climbs up on a piece of drift-wood and begins,
"Let's start with the obvious: Surfboards are made to float on the water. They have a natural center of gravity. If you were to lay any surfboard in a swimming pool, it would come to rest the same way every time. This is what we want to do when you lay on a surf board. That is to have the board remain in the same relation to the water as it was without your weight on it, just a bit lower in the water. A good tip is to find this balance point and lay on your board then make a mark right at your beak-tip. This is a spot best made with a bit of wax or a magic marker. It is a reference point that enables you to put your beak on the same spot every time so the board will react to your weight the same way every time."
Everybirdie lays their board flat on the sand, and Pookie and Sky help them make the mark with a red marker.
"Ok, now do not paddle with both wings simultaneously because this will cause the board to speed up and slow down in the water and you will not be able to maintain constant hull speed through the water. Always paddle with the same wing-stroke, one wing, then the other." The birdies head to the edge, place their boards on the water, climb on, and start to paddle. " Now sit up carefully on your board, try not to t..." Too late Hulk, Gus and BB tip their surf boards over.
"Now it's time to learn how to stand up. Lie on your chest, your head up, looking ahead. Put your wings on the board beside your shoulders tips down like you were going to do a push up. Push your upper body up while at the same time you sweep your feet under you, laying them on the stringer, the line down the middle of the board, so your weight is centered along the stringer" Everybirdie keeps trying until they all stand up nervously. "Ok, here comes a wave, let the wave pick up the board, keep your wings out to balance, and have fun" Pookie watches as the others wobble, some fallin' others keeping their balance, and a few cheat and fly off their boards into the air.
"WOW, this is greyt" LA yells to Dixie
"WEEEEE almost as good as in Hawaii" Dixie grins, keeping his board smoothly moving on the surface.
"AAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!" SPLASH" Sky wipes out into the water sputtering

Day 23--Whale watching and scuba diving Part 1
Hello, Angel Girl here in Pleasant Bay, Cape Breton. Rising early before sunrise we ate a little breakfast of pancakes, scrambled eggs and my favorite toast with Peanut Butter. As the sun began to smile over the water, we were already riding down the winding trail into Pleasant Bay where we are scheduled to join Captain Mark. The types of whales we will most likely see are Pilot, Finback, Minke and Humpback. Occasionally we also might see Atlantic White-Sided Dolphins, Basking Sharks and shy Harbor Porpoises. We'll even hear these magnificent creatures sing along with our hydrophone!
If we are fortunate we might also see Gray and harbor Seals lying out on secluded rocky outcrops. Other common residents of the rugged shore are: Bald Eagles, Black Guillemots, Northern Gannets, Double Crested Cormorants, Common Mergansers, Moose and Black Bears.
" Good mornin' mateys" Captain Mark calls as he sees us arriving at the docks. leaving our horses hitched in the shade along a rail installed just for that purpose, we hurry to join him on the deck of the Tourmaster. "Half the days gone" he looks at the sun barely peaking over the horizon.
"Sorry, it's quite a ride from the campsite." Angel Girl replies smiling sweetly
"Never be mindin', let's get ready to set sail" Captain Mark strolls off to the engine room, and reeves the motor while we get settled in for the trip.
"This is gonna be fun" Susan says, watching the Gulls flying over head,as we navigate out of the harbor at Pleasant Bay. " Look, a pair of Eagles fishing for breakfast" she points towards the rocky shore. One Eagle swoops down, touching the water, and rises with a large fish in his talons. They head for shore and a breakfast of fresh fish.
"That's so gross, eating rare fish" Little Angel makes a funny face and rolls her eyes
"Oh, watch" Cookie says indicating a place about 200 feet off the port side of the boat.
Everybirdie watches as a whole family of pilot whales surface as one, breath, and vanish in a splash of water. The whales resurface closer to the boat and call and sing for the eggcited birdies on board. Captain Mark turns on his microphone and records the whale songs, and plays them back to the them. The whales respond by singing, and talking to one another as they swim closer tot he boat.
"Look, a baby one' Dixie tells Little Angel
"I wanta pet one" Little Angel says leaning over the side of the boat.
"OH NO!!!!!" Dixie screams as he grabs LA by the sweater collar and pulls her back into the boat. " They'll eat you"
"No they won't." Little Angel stomps her foot, sticks out her tongue and sits down on a bench with a thump. " I just wanted to pet one"
Cameras clicked as the various whales show off. It was greyt to see, pilot whales, Minke and even a trio of Humpbacks. Along the shore the Grey and Harbor Seals bark loudly, jumping into the water to swim swiftly out to greet the boat........

Day 21--Cheticamp River Kayaking part 2
Hello Everybirdie, Angel Girl with today's BOTM post. What fun it is to kayak down the rapids, and paddle through the quiet calm between high mountain peaks towering above the river far beneath. As the remainder of our group finish their trip through the first rapids, we paddle along, on calm still waters. Along the shoreline we see a Moose grazing in the cool of the tall tree-lined river. A lone coyote dashes out of sight as we draw near to his hiding spot. The Canadian Geese honk their annoyance of our intrusion upon their domain. It isn't long before making a large curve in the River we enter our second, longer rapids.
"Hey, this is greyt. Like a long roller coaster" Peppino squeals delightfully as he, Rio and Tango paddle fast entering the swift current, bobbing like an apple in a barrel of water
"Snowy, paddle on the right" Finnegan calls out, paddling frantically as their kayak is pulled into the rapids
" okay everybird watch out for boulders, and fallen tree branches, be careful, see ya at the bottom" Angel shouts as her kayak rushes head-long into the fast moving waters ahead.
"Chyna, you need to lean to the lean back so we stay upright." Cori warns her.

"Spot, you look sea-sick" BonBon giggles making fun for her frother, " you ain't gonna puke are you?"
"BonBon, behave" Poppa Sky tells her as he and BB flash by, barely avoiding a giant red boulder poking out of the river.
Pearl and Silver let their kayak go and keep their paddles on the ready to push away from the rocks, they glide smoothly to the bottom of the rapids where they wait for the others. Sugar and Jenny0Lynn with Lalo and Sweetie in a tandem kayak begin to paddle to the further left edge before pointing into the rushing rapids. Their kayak bobs roughly, then smooths out sailing through the water swiftly. the girls watching intently for snags under the water, and pushing off from the great boulders that point their angry heads towards the sky. Hulk bravely paddles into the rapids, Snowy and Strawberry paddling on the right to keep them steady as the current under he surface draws them along to the bottom.
Chipper, Cheyenne, Cookie and TiPaul enter the rapids last, their kayak begins to wobble and then straightens out. They paddle madly as a black form seems to leap out of the water just ahead. The water is too strong and their kayak bumps the rock, causing it to spin in a circle. Facing backwards their kayak is out of control as they drop down the rapids too fast. Chipper yells as water washes over them. Cookie and Cheyenne, paddle in reverse, slowing their descent. Together they work to turn their kayak, as more rocks rush towards them. The others watch in shock as their friends dip out of sight under the water. Holding their breath they wait. "There they are!" everyone cheers."
Breathing hard the foursome stops in the midst of the others.

  Day 20- Cheticamp River Kayaking
Hello everybirdie, Angel Girl here with today's wet BOTM post. We finally arrived at the inland beginning of the Cheticamp River, where we found our Kayaks ready and waiting for our down river tour. The sun was just peaking over the mountains when we pushed off and began to slowly paddle out into the calm river. We had not gone very far when the current of the river began to move rapid and strong towards our first white-water adventure.
" Angel GIRL!!!" Raffikki called loudly, " you sure this is safe?"
"Well, I think so," she saw the look on several faces change, " YES, of course it is, just hang on tight to the sides of the kayak and paddle when you can. Watch for rocks, and paddle backwards to slow yourself down to navigate around them. SEE YOU ALL AT THE BOTTOM"
"WEEEEEE," Little Angel and Dixie's kayak begins it rapid ride down the rough, fast moving waters, spray flying up into their faces, " this is fun Dixie" Dixie wasn't so sure, but paddles and leaned slightly to go around the first rock in their pathway.
"Oh, my feathers!" Chyna complained as water soaked her from head to tail, " It's freezing cold too!"
"Paddle harder Cori" Boo Boo ordered as she navigated a turn in the river expertly
""BRRRRRR. It's icy. I'm soaked too" Falco called to Chyna as she and Willie splash around a huge boulder in the river.
"Havin' fun BB?" Sky asked laughing as water covered over their kayak, as they bobbed and spun down the decline" reaching quickly back to check on his pickles. " Ok, their safe!"
"YUCK!!!!!! " BonBon glares at Spot who grins back, " you did that on purpose." BonBon shakes her feathers dry of water and "OHHHHHHHHHH, algae" Spot giggles and splashes her again with the paddle. She sticks out her tongue. " where'd you learn that from"
"I'm tellin' Poppa Sky on you Spot" and Little Angel"
YEEHAWW" SamIAM yells as he and Miranda move swiftly through the choppy waters, mist and waves soaking them to the skin. " This is so much fun"
" Hold on tight" Jesse yells to Falco as they reach a very rough, rocky spot at the bottom of a short falls. Willie and Jesse paddle hard to keep up-right and finally they exit the white water into the calm river below. :Wasn't that greyt falco?" Jesse asks, but only gets a fluff of wet feathers in response. The boys laugh.
" Here we go Gus" Hulk says as they enter the rapids, water falling high around them
"Snowy, Strawberry are you two ok?" Angel calls back seeing them caught up on a small dead-fall( tree limb) in the water.
"Yep, we're free" the kayak moves off swiftly, into the deeper water.
Chipper, Cheyenne, Cookie and TiPaul ride the rushing current safely through the first turn, into the rough, drop over the falls, when suddenly their kayak turns sideways. They paddle hard trying to correct themselves, but it's too late, they tip to the left and then turn upside down. Just as swift they roll themselves upright to the applause of the others watching from below.

Day 19--Sights and Scenes to behold
"HELLOOOO!!!!!!!" Angel Girl yells, listening to her voice echo off the rock faces of the mountains. " This is so cool. We have so much to do in this one park, it's incredible."
"Oh look" Kaji points as he spies a large mother black bear with three tumbly teenage cubs following behind, wrestling and rolling in the long meadow grass.
There are many activities to do when visiting the Cape Breton Highlands National Park. Activities include camping, hiking, sightseeing, swimming, fishing, cycling, golfing, kayaking and surfing. There are endless swimming options available for all ages in the park. There are five main salt water ocean beaches in the park and two freshwater lakes. The ocean beaches include Ingonish Beach, North Bay Beach, Broad Cove Beach, Black Brook Beach and La Block Beach. The two freshwater beaches include Freshwater Lake and Warren Lake. Freshwater Lake and Ingonish Beach are both supervised with a lifeguard during the summer months. There are very strong currents at Black Brook and Ingonish Beach which must be considered when bringing small birdies to these two beaches.
"Hey let's go white water kayaking down the Cheticamp River." Pookie says eager for adventure. " Then we could try surfing off the beach."
"Sounds like fun." Angel Girl climbs up on a tree stump to be heard. " OK, who wants to try some kayaking in white waters?" she looks as every wing goes up. " cool bunch of adventures."
"They Park ranger says they have kayaks arrival at the top of the river. We can ride the horses there, or hike cross country." Jenny-Lynn tells the group.
"We better hike, leave the horses here until we return and head down tot he ocean later for some surfing. Pookie offered to help teach us a few basics." Willie adds, grabbing his backpack
. The sun shines like sparkles through the heavy pine forest canopy. As the group walk they reach the opening over looking the ocean and park below. Steep cliffs and deep river canyons carve into a forested plateau bordering the Atlantic Ocean.
"BB, this is so beautiful, I feel like we have escaped into the past. Look how alive it all looks here." Sky hugs BB close as they look out over the park.
"Dixie, look, deer" Little Angel watches as the group graze in the shadows of the mountain.
Rio and Cydney, stand in awe at the size of the ocean stretched before them. " It goes on forever"
Jesse, joins Falco as they take photos to member their trip to Cape Beeton. " Popeye, Cori, Boo Boo and Pearl stop to admire an Eagle soaring high in the sky above them.
"We better get going so we have time to kayak before the sun gets too high in the sky. It will be so much fun bumping and splashing down the river." Angel Girl talks to Lalo and Sugar as they begin to hike down the soft, leaf covered pathway.
Sky grins, patting his backpack. " some pickles just in case I get hungry."
Angel Girl giggles and shakes her head at her frother, " always hungry"

Day 18--Cape Breton Highlands National Park
Hello everybirdie, Angel Girl here with today's BOTM post. It was so eggciting to see the whales so up close and personal. The majestic giants were happy to show-off their talents, leaping, and blowing for us as we paddled among them heading for our new campsite at Cape Breton National Park. I wish to take a moment to thank everyone for their their daily votes and support in my quest for the throne. Sharing this adventure with all my friends is making it a special memory for me.
After paddling along the coast we finally arrived at Cheticamp, on the edge of Park. Here we were reunited with our horses, and were able to pick up a few needed supplies that my frothers Jesse and Amanda, being boys, forgot to include in our packs. The park is located in the northern end of the island and covers one-third of the Cabot Trail. It passes through the park featuring spectacular ocean and mountain views. The park is well known for its "steep cliffs and deep river canyons that carve into a forested plateau bordering the Atlantic Ocean" The park was the first National Park in the Atlantic provinces of Canada and covers an area of 948 km². It is one of 42 in Canada's system of national parks. It is known worldwide as the place where singer Taylor Mitchell died after being fatally attacked by coyotes, the only adult human fatality from coyotes in history.
At the western entrance of the park is the Acadian village of Chéticamp on the Gulf of Saint Lawrence . On the eastern side of the park are the beaches at Ingonish on the Atlantic Ocean. In between are mountains, valleys, forests, waterfalls, rocky coastlines and a tundra-like plateau known as the Cape Breton Highlands. Park wildlife includes moose, black bears, coyotes, and Bald Eagles. The park provides habitat for the uncommon Bicknell's Thrush and Gaspe' Shrew. The first nest records of Boreal Owls for Nova Scotia were found in the south west corner of this park.
" Lalo, come on, you have enough souvenirs" Jenny-Lynn says, wings on her hips as she keeps an eye on her fister in the gift shop in Cheticamp.
"What's this Acadian thing?" Gus asks Hulk, "reading a sign mounted in town square
"Acadians are of mixed decent, French and other races. They came here from Louisiana"

Day 17--A Whale of a Good Time
Good morning everyone, Happy Humpday. Today we will finish our trip along the coast. Arrangements were made for our horses and supplies to be delivered to our newest camp site in the Cape Breton Highlands National Park. It's sure been an awesome sight to see all the wild seabirds including Arctic Puffins and several Gull and Tern species. The Grey Seals were a playful surprise, however as many of us know their plight is sad as animal rights groups world-wide fight to ban the annual seal hunt. We had just set off when we were joined by a pod of playful, entertaining whales.
Spot lands eggspertly in his kayak, and waves at a whale! BonBon and Snowflake shriek and laugh as one of the whales 'blows' right next to them and they get showered!"Oh, no, we're covered in whale snot!" yells BonBon! Spot and the band of bros. laugh at them as they try to wipe off the stuff!
"That'll teach you to get too close to the whales! " says Spot.
Just then a whale comes up under Spot's kayak and dumps them into the water! The mama Whale says," it's not nice to laugh at the pretty girl birds! "
"Yes ma'am, we're sorry!" says Spot and the boys reply! He whispers to Panther," we better get out of here!"
"What an adventure! "says Panther." We could have been eaten by whales!"
Angel Girl laughs and says, "silly boys, whales don't eat birds!"
"Today we visit Cheticamp, Cape Breton, a famous Nova Scotia destination, known for it's whale sightings. The most frequent sightings are big Fin whales, dolphins, Minke whales, Humpback whales and Pilot whales. Seals and Puffins are observed on nearly every tour.
"hey look, spotted whales?" Puffin calls out, " look at the white spots"
"They are actually North Atlantic right whales which come here rarely with their calves for the summer from Florida and Georgia waters. Those white patches seen on the right whale's head are raised tissue that is actually dark in color called callosities. Whale lice or cyamids covering the callosities are what makes them appear white. " Sky explains
Little Peep and Rio stand tall to get abetter glimpse of the rare whales. Kiddo and Sweetpepper take photos of the whales as they surface close by. Pilot whales splash happily at the kayaking birdies, as they call in whale-enise to one another. " They're so cute" Kacey adds as she sketches a whale jumping out of the water on her art pad.
" These are so gentle yet so large" Mr Finnegan comments to Susan as they sit watching from their kayak.
" Until recently Whales were feared as being dangerous and aggressive, yet look, how gently they swim and play close to us." BB states as she snuggles with Sky to watch they giants of the ocean.
"Willie, did you get a good shot of that baby and her Momma?" Falco asks from across the group of kayaks bobbing softly in the calm waters.
"YEP! Mom's gonna love these pictures."
Reluctantly the group begins to paddle towards their next stop-over! Spot waves good-bye!

  Day 16--Kayaking Adventures
Good morning everyone, Angel Girl here with today's post. The afternoon turned out perfect for kayaking along the coast line. We stop for lunch in a sheltered cove, where within minutes we are able to visit a nationally known Seabird nesting site. Here Terns, Gulls and other species nest noisily in the rocky cliffs and along the shoreline. As we enjoyed our lunch the sounds from the nesting birds was difficult to hear over.
"WOW, I can't believe how loud they are" Popeye yells to Chyna only inches away. The two girls laugh as neither can hear one another.
"Look" Cydney says pointing to a family of whales surfacing not far off shore. She snaps several pictures before joining Willie, Kaji, Lizzie and Cookie as they hike to the nesting grounds with the others. " Yuck!" she looks down, and sees she'd stepped in Sea Gull poop, " OH no, my new shoes!" she looks sadly at the mess. The others giggle
"Snowy!" Sky calls, come here buddy wanta show you something " a lobster" they look at the large clawed creature staring angrily back from a shallow pool of water among rocks. Let's help him back into the ocean." Sky says trying to pick the snapping Lobster." Snowy grabs a stick and lifts him up as he clamps down. " not such a nice fella are ya?" he laughs as Sky and him gently lower him into the surf.
"AHHHHHH, babies" Little Angel tells Dixie, " aren't they cute." they watch the fledglings trying to rise into the sky as clouds of white take off from the shore. " doesn't it make you just wanta have a baby to love too?" LA gets all dreamy eyed. "Maybe we can adopt a baby bird?" she smiles sweetly watching the youngsters.
Boo Boo and Cori take photos of the birds in flight, as Chipper and BonBon draw pictures in their sketchbooks. Spot and a few of the boys take off into the sky flying with the Seabirds, screaming happily with them.
"Ok, sorry everybirdie but we must move on. We have lots more to see" Angel Girl calls loudly, trying to be hear over the roar of bird voices. Reluctantly everyone says farewell to their new friends, as they head to the shore and get their kayak ready to move on. The whales continue to swim close to the shore as the group paddles off. Angel Girl shares a little history of Cape Breton as they quietly paddle along.

In 1784, Britain split the colony of Nova Scotia into three separate colonies: New Brunswick, Cape Breton Island, and present-day peninsular Nova Scotia, in addition to the adjacent colonies of St. John's Island (renamed Prince Edward Island in 1798) and Newfoundland. The colony of Cape Breton Island had its capital at Sydney on its namesake harbor fronting on Spanish Bay and the Cabot Strait. Its first Lieutenant-Governor was Joseph Frederick Wallet DesBarres (1784–1787) and his successor was William Macarmick (1787).

Large-scale shipbuilding began in the 1790s. Shipbuilding peaked in the 1850s, marked in 1851 by the full rigged ship Lord Clarendon, the largest ever built in Cape Breton.

  Day 14--Inverness-Eagle Eye Kayak tour-part 1
Good morning everybirdie, Angel Girl with today's first Inverness adventure. As the red sun rises over the ocean we finish our hearty breakfast of toast, scrambled eggs, bacon and fruit served up by some of our handsome boy-birds. By the time the sun is above the waters edge we are riding off to begin today's fun tour. Our destination is Eagle Eye Kayak tours. We will kayak from Inverness Harbour along the warm calm waters of the Northumberland Strait. See the rugged cliffs, waterfalls and rocky coastlines. Watch the many Bald Eagles that frequent the area. Take a break for a snack on a secluded beach and look for beach glass or fossils. We will learn to and experience the peacefulness of paddling the spectacular coast and enjoying the natural beauty of the coastline.
"Everybirdie ready?" Angel Girls calls as we turn our horses out into the paddock, with plenty of hay and water. " we are off for a five hour adventure. Make sure to bring your cameras, water bottles and let's have some serious fun" Angel Girl waves her wing and leads off towards the shoreline where the instructors are waiting.
After an in-depth discussion on paddling, safety and making certain our life-jackets are on correctly, we are assigned a Kayak, and push out to sea. "Hey that sounds so cool. Out to sea!" Angel Girl giggles happily as she tries to balance in the kayak.
"Wee, this is fun" Rio yells to Kaji and Lizzie in the Kayak. " wow, don't move too much!" he tells Miranda in another Kayak.
"Look!" Jenny-Lynn points to a distant dark shape, " a whale" she shows Lalo and Sweetie, who stares in awe as the giant mammal surfaces int he far distance.
"Eagles!" Finnegan says, watching the majestic form above, " he's beautiful"
" Tango and Susan look down into the dark water seeing small schools of fish swimming by their Kayak"
"Oh Dixie, this is soooo much fun" Little Angel smiles eggcitedly, " I love kayaking" she paddles like a pro. Sky gives her a frown, as he and BB gain their sea-legs and stop their Kayak tipping side to side.
"Touchy things aren't they" Pearl cries as Silver and Peppino try to steady their wobbling kayak.
Finally we are all ready, and begin to dip our paddles into the calm ocean water. The kayaks move silently, some steadier then others as first-time paddlers learn how to do it. Before all have mastered paddling and off we head along the coast-line.
"A moose" Pookie calls out. A huge bull raises his head from drinking, and watches the birds paddle past. Ducks and Canada Geese flock along the waters edge, swimming along beside us as we go. " WOW, Swans." a group of thirty or more white Swans honk their annoyance of our intrusion. Polly and Falco snap pictures with their cameras.
" Everybirdie" Angel Girl yells out, " Seals" the coastline area is grey with seals. Their calls filling the air loudly. Many hurriedly dive into the water, coming closes for us to take pictures. " this is amazing!" Angel Girl takes lots of photos

Day 10--The Greyt Race to the Finishline
Wow, what a spectacular fireworks display last evening over the ocean. After a day of dancing, playing instruments and dining on fine Scottish cuisine, a relaxing rest on the beach, as the skies filled with color was the perfect ending.
Today is the Triathlon. We're up bright and early to warm up for the Greyt Race. We'll splash in the ocean, ride our horse over rough terrain and finally fly or waddle to the finish. This evening we will continue down the Celtic Trail to Inverness, where we will spend two days exploring the area, and taking part in a wonderful, SURPRISE WEDDING. YES, a wedding. My frother MR Casey Thrift will wed his darling Tiamaria in an ocean-view outdoor ceremony, followed by a reception in the Parish courtyard of St John's Church. Everybirdie is invited to join them on this special occasion as they exchange their vows of love in true Scottish style. The ceremony will take place at 7PM EST on my page # 224627
The ocean is calm, and blue as we ride off to the starting line of today's cross country Triathlon. Pearl, and Silver have been practicing since sign up earlier in the week and are the two to watch for. Snowy, Cydney, Strawberry and TiPaul are strong splashers for the first leg of the three event competition. Sky and BB, Kiddo, Cori and Pepper have been working on their horse-birdship skills and we expect some awesome results from them. In the final leg Susan, Sweetpepper, Dixie, Little Angel, aka lightening-streak, and Raffi are rearing to show their stuff.
The whistle goes to signal the start. All the birdies are lined up as the starting pistol sounds. As a flock they run to the waters edge, wings out, water splashing far and high, they show their best efforts. Pearl dives beak first into the water, sending ripples in all directions, Casey puts his toes in and backs out, " Too cold for me" "Come' on sweetie" Tiamaria calls, splashing intot he surf fearlessly. Thoroughly soaked they wade towards the waiting horses hitched on shore. Casey is still not wet, and Tiamaria is splashing him as fast as her wings will beat.
TiPaul bolts off the ground onto Lightning as is riding towards the rocky hills at the end of the beach with Sky in hot pursuit. BB waves as she charges her horse past the group, up the hill, and starts along the Celtic trail. Sugar and Thorin are closing in fast, as Chyna and Dyna-Dancer take second position. Here comes Boo Boo on Starfire, she's pushin' into third position. Sky takes the lead and arrives at the third event start.
Sky never looks back, but is off at a fast waddle, Sugar jumps clear of Thorin and is on the run, quickly catchin' up to Sky Boy. BB stops to catch her breath as she dismounts and begins the last leg. Spot, coming to a screeching stop, jumps right over Hulk is has gotten off to a quick start. Here comes Miss Chipper, she flies over the runners heads to take second position as they begin their climb up the hillside....

  Day 9--Music to my ears??
Hello everybirdie, Angel Girl here with today's BOTM post. I's been a wonderful, albeit loud day here in Port Hood as some of our talented friends have given their all to learning to play the bagpipes. Miss Lizzie certainly is the best, but my own frother Mr. Sky is mighty good too. No wonder he's such a wind-bag"
"Hey, now SKY was that nice?" Angel Girl glares at him, scowling after her frother swatted her on the shoulder.
"I am not a "wind-bag" now am I sweetheart?" Sky asks BB, who is grinning widely, trying to look innocent as possible.
"Ah, come on Sky, I was only teasing you." Angel Girl says masking her delight in getting one on her frother at long last.
"Listen to this" Polly says taking a deep breath and blowing through the mouth part of the blow pipe as hard as possible. " eeeeeeettttteeeeeekkkkkkwhyatie"
"Hey that's really cool Polly" Silver says holding his wings over his ear holes
"My turn" Spot says taking a b ig breath and puffing out his checks like a hamster. " wwwwykrjfjsdbs" Spot frowns at his bagpipe, then laughs, ready to try again.
"Ok, Sky your turn" Kiddo says, " AAAAAMMMMAAZZZZIIIIIINNGG GGGRRRACCCEEEE"
"Hey, that's greyt Sky" Angel Girl says in a whisper to Kacey and Mikey, told ya he was a wind bag." Sky shoots her a hotty look and rolls his eyes at his fister.
"ME, ME, Me!" Little Angel yells, as she gets ready to play. She takes a deep breath, then suddenly she swallowed the air in her mouth. " BURPPPPPP!" she giggles as the sound escapes her beak, " now I'm ready." she tries once more. Music comes softly out of the bagpipe, and rises in volumne. Finishing LA grins happily as she kisses Dixie next to her.
Gus picks up his blow pipe, takes a breath and begins to play "Danny Boy" like a pro. Everybirdie stops tolisten as he continues to play. Kaji joins him, followed by Miss Lizzie. They play the song perfectly. Every birdie claps as it comes to a close.
"You guys are awesome" Angel Girl says, " You should go on the road"
Willie, Hulk, Jenny-lynn and Peppino pick up their drum sticks and begin to hit their snare drums, marching back and forth like true Scotsmen.
After a day filled with music and dancing everybirdie is happy to head down to the beach for the Fireworks over the ocean. Tomorrow the triathlon takes places."Has anybirdie seen Tiamaria and Casey? They disappeared towards the Chapel this morning?" Finnegan asks

  Hi Chirpy sweetie
I want to thank everybirdy for their prayers! Mila's family is truly grateful! We all know the power of prayer is a powerful thing...but we are all in shock over little Mila's progress. She had brain surgery 7:30am on Friday. When the surgeons went in, they discovered that some of what was tumor, was actually scar tissue from her surgery lastyyear, & sort of made a pocket that the larger tumor was sitting in. They were able to ENTIRELY remove BOTH tumors! On Saturday, she was moved to a regular room & they had her up walking! On Sunday, less than 48hrs upon completion of her surgery, MILA WAS SENT HOME...TRULY A MIRACLE!!!
Mila's family would still appreciate ur prayers. Since this cancer came back so quickly & aggressively, doctors are going to treat it very aggressively with chemo & radiation. Mila is doing wonderfullly! She has to take it easy, but she's up & playing with all of her princess toys! She'll walk up to u, give u a hug & tell u that she has a boo-boo & that herhhead hurts. It's truly amazing & miraculous! All things are possible with God!
Love from

  Day 8--Chestico Festival dance lessons
Hello everybirdie; What a greyt time we had on the beach. The bikini competition was amazing, and we only had to pull three of the boys off the stage. LOL! It was so much fun getting a chance to see all the latest European styles and designs. Between the warm surf and the savory foods it has been an eggciting visit in Port Hood. Today we get our chance to watch, and try our talented talons in some Celtic dancing, and maybe even put our beaks to the bagpipes and play some Gaelic tunes. The Interpretative Celtic Music Center is open to visitors, who can try not only the bagpipes, but also their wings at being a drummer as well.
"Hey L'il Angel, what are you dressed like that for?" Angel Girl asks her fister, eying up Little Angel's new Celtic tartan kilt.
"I'm going to take Highland dancin' lessons today" L'il Angel says putting her tam on her head and looking at herself in her mirror.
"Dixie? Are you ready sweetheart?" L'il Angel yells into the tent door.
Slowly Dixie exits the tent, his face blushed red. He looks around quickly making sure the coast is clear. HE is wearing a kilt too, complete with a sash over hi shoulders. " We're taking Scottish dance lessons" It was then that Dixie saw that many of the other birds were sporting kilts in various Tartans ( Clan colors).
"See, we all are had the same idea" Sky says walking past in his kilt (Feileadh-beag - pr: feela beg). Sky stands tall, and smiles. "It's birdly. It's not a dress Dixie!"
"Hi SamIAm, you off to the bagpipe lessons?" Kaji asks, reining in his horse, " That's were Lizzie Pookie and I are riding too. Com' on with us"
The birds mount up and head off to the Music center and the MacInnis Sportsplex. There is Celtic music, dancing demonstrations and more Scottish foods to try today. Tomorrow is the Triathlon. Many famous fiddle-players, Celtic musicians from as far away as Scotland, British Columbia, Canada and the USA have arrived for the days concerts, lessons and fun.
At the Celtic Music Center, Snowflake, Little Angel, Cookie and Cydney stand as the instructor Patricia Chafe shows them the first dance steps. 'Ok, one, two, three..." Little Angel takes the first two steps then suddenly making a quick turn on one foot, she trips sending Cydney falling into Snowflake. The three girls giggle as they lay on the floor in a jumbled heap at Cookie's feet. "Ok, let's try this again. Maybe you should stand over here, Little Angel" Pat says, walking her to the other side of the line. The three girls do the steps again, perfectly. Then the others join them, as the fiddles play a quick tune. The laughing birdies have lots of fun, learning to dance. After a few lessons, they sit down to watch some experienced dancers for a while. " We did greyt" Dixie says happily as he hugs LA close.
"Ok Sky and BB. You're turn" Sky leads BB in a graceful Highland Waltz. Everybirdie applauds their performance. "WE practiced!" BB says

  Day 7--Port Hood beach fun
Hello, and good morning to all our BC friends. I must first make a quick apology for missing two days of blogs. In my gallery I will be posting photos of the "tree" that has been to topic of our absence recently. Now, with it cut down, removed and cleaned up things are getting back on track. I want to thank everyone for their votes and support in my absence.
"Oh look" Angel Girl points to the beach spread out for miles along the blue ocean edge. Kicking Celtic Lass gently in the ribs to urge her into a trot she rides towards the shade of a row of Maples edging the beach. As far as the eye can see there are sand sculptured bikini clad forms, and beautiful birds dressed in imported swimwear.
" SKY? What are you looking at so attentively ?" BB asked already knowing her Sky with his black-out sunglasses was taking in the food booths. "See, if it were any other bird he'd be watching the girl-birds playing beach volleyball. LOL!" BB tells Lalo and Jinny riding beside them. Sweetie giggles at her frother.
"I'm taking a swim with Firestorm" Cinn-A-Bunn yells galloping towards the surf, Boo Boo, Polly, Zippy and Rio race after him.
" We're off to check out the, AHHHHHHHH, beach" Pearl and Silver say giggling and jumping off their horses, hitching them in the shade.
CuBird and Snowflake grab their towels as they make their way to the water's edge. Little Peep hurries to catch up. Angel Girl watches her friends for a moment before deciding that she'd like to get a snow-cone. "Anyone wanta join me in a snowcone?" Chyna, Chipper and Lizzie think it's a greyt idea so the four girls take off in search of the snow-cone booth.
"Well Dixie, let's set up our towel, and sit in the sun. It'll make your legs and feet feel better. Then I'll go get us ice cream cones." L'il Angel smiles, leaning over to give Dixie a big kiss and whispers, " and some popcorn" Dixie grins, thinking of how often they'd sat together eating popcorn as they enjoyed a movie.
Port Hood is well known for it's miles of sandy beaches. The warm ocean water and scenic landscape some of the most beautiful in the world. During the Chestico Days, Tartan colors can be seen all down the beach, flying above booths selling clothes, food and sovereigns.
Tia and Casey wander down the beach wing in wing. They have been very quiet so far this trip, spending almost every minute with their heads close togetehr talking. " I wonder what's up with those two lovebirds?" Sugar says to Gus and Susan. They return to their important business of shopping for keepsakes of their trip to Cape Breton.
"Hey Spot, where's BonBon?" Falco asks.
"Not certain, but last I saw her, she was splashing in the waves with Raffi, Angel, Pepper and Sweetpepper. They were over there near the stage for the Bikini competition"
Falco walks in that direction, zig-zagging to avoid birdies tanning on the beach.

" We'll all get to try some of the local Lobsters, cooked in various ways, plus for those of us who don't like sea-food, we have Angus Burgers too." Angel Girl announces. The air is filled with Celtic fiddle music, adding a touch of Scotland.
"After lunch can we visit some of the five beaches that make up this area?" Miranda asks, through a beakful of Lobster salad, " heard they are having a Sand Bikini event"
"Count us all in'"the boys say " we can make our own bikini sculptures to enter the contest. It is part of the Chestico Festival taking place."

Tia here, sorry I haven't been around in quite awhile, sooooo much has been going on, I'll let u know all about it. Mom FINALLY unpacked the box that contained her notebook that has everybirdy's page #s! Today, mom & I ask for ur prayers.

A good friend of mom's has an adorable 4 yr old daughter, Mila. The past 14 months have been a horrific nightmare for Dawn, Mila's mother. Mila was born with Li Fraumeni Syndrome, which is an EXTREMELY RARE genetic condition. Certain receptors shut off & leaves that person very prone to cancer. Last summer, Mila began acting strangely...bobbing her head around, running into things, suddenly falling down & grabbing her head & screaming. Her pediatrician immediately ordered a brain MRI. Dawnh& Neil were devastated to learn that their precious 3 yr old daughter had Choroid Plexus Carcinoma, an EXTREMELY RARE & very aggressive brain cancer. Mila had brain surgery 3 days later. It was touch & go for the 1st week, they had to restart her heart 4 times. Miraculously, she made it thru, although she spent 3 months in intensive care. She was released fromthe hospital 2 days before Christmas...a true Christmas miracle...Mila had ABSOLUTELY NO mental deficit! Since then, she must have an MRI every 3 months. All of them had been perfectly spotless - until her MRI last week.

Mila now has 2 aggressive tumors - the larger one, the size of a small navel orange, & the other is a bit larger than a golfball. The larger one is in the same spot as the one removed last year, but it is tangled in her nerves & has been deemed inoperable. She will once again have to endure chemotherapy & this time start radiation. The smaller tumor will be removed. I just spoke to her mom Dawn, they will be leaving for Children's Hosp in Pittsburgh in a couple hrs. Mila will be having brain surgery tomorrow morning at 7:30am. to remove the smaller tumor & hopefully be able to remove part at least part of the larger one. We are all heartbroken that this precious little girl hasto go thru tthis again. I hope all our dear friends will say a special prayer for Mila, that God in Heaven will once again restore her health! Thank you my dear friends & God Bless u all.
Love
TiaMaria & mom Sandy

Day 3--Port Hastings and the Celtic Trail
Good morning to everybirdie; Angel Girl here with today's BOTM update. The sun rose red and orange on the horizon over historic Cape Breton. Lizzie, BB and Kaji had a greyt breakfast on the go, as we birdies took down our tents, and packed up our belongings, to be carried by the pack horses to our next stop, Port Hastings. With the missing FLARES, still unaccounted for, and TiPaul, Dixie and Cori keeping a watchful eye on L'il Angel we mounted up as the sun turned the sky a brilliant blue over the water.
The deep water of the Strait of Canso at the village of Port Hastings was the reason the Inverness and Richmond Coal Pier was constructed here in 1902. Historians find many interesting facts in our records kept at the Archives of the Hastings, Cape Breton Museum. Here we find photos taken of the construction of the bridge connecting mainland Nova Scotia with the Cape Breton Island. The Canso Causeway was built at a narrow location on the Strait of Canso, several miles northwest of Port Hawkesbury and Mulgrave, crossing from Cape Porcupine near Auld's Cove on the Nova Scotia side to Port Hastings on the Cape Breton side. Approximately 10,092,000 t (9,933,000 long tons) of rock for building the causeway was quarried from a mountain on Cape Porcupine.
"Hey, let's go to the Museum and take a look at some of the historic photos of the area." Boo Boo suggests
"Awesome idea. Then we can ride down the Celtic Trail. The Celtic Shores Coastal Trail is a 92-km (57 mi) multi-use trail stretching from Port Hastings to the Town of Inverness on the west coast.
The flat trail meanders along the coastline, through picturesque wilderness, skirts streams, and connects several communities and attractions. Along the way you will find active fishing harbors, warm-water beaches in Port Hood, West Mabou, and Inverness, the Celtic Music Interpretive Centre in Judique along with five other museums, Glenora Distillery, and the not-to-be-missed Red Shoe Pub in Mabou, with the best live Celtic music on the island and unique living Gaelic culture. We'll be camping at Mabou for a few days to explore all the area." Angel Girl Slaps Gaelic Lass on the shoulder, and heads off towards the Museum.
" Angel? Are we going to be stopping at the beach for a swim today?" Raffi asks
'Greyt idea. Tell the others that after the museum we'll ride to the beach for a while before heading down the Trail" Raffikki turns Sun-Dancer and goes to tell the birds of the day's plans.
"Sky, wanta race? Little Angela asks a twinkle in her eye." If I win you help pitch our tent. If I lose I'll make you supper tonight"
"Ok, you're on" Sky yells galloping off of Chief at top speed. Little Angel rides twinkle after him, urging her horse on. She passes Sky and whips around the corner to come in first at the museum. " I win!"
"I let you. Better me pitch your tent, then you cook for BB and I" Sky laughs at the hotty look on L'il Angels face.

Day 2 --Welcome to Cape Breton Island part 2
Welcome everybirdie to beautiful, historic Nova Scotia, Canada. We begin in Port Hawkesbury a town located on the southwestern end of Cape Breton Island, on the north shore of the Strait of Canso. The town was originally named Ship Harbor (after the harbor upon which it is located) and is largely a service center for western Cape Breton Island .
Port Hawkesbury has a rich Celtic heritage and beautiful rugged landscape, the perfect place to begin our tour. The sloping mountainous landscape, descending to rocky ocean shores is breathtaking, the perfect backdrop for camping and adventures. Talking about adventures, "has anybirdie seen Little Angel?"
Falco " I saw her and Dixie trying to set up their tent." Falco points to a place close to the look out over the water.
"Ok, as long as we know we haven't misplaced her we're ok."
"Angel Girl, We set up a rope corral for the horses. Maybe before dark we can go look around Port Hawkesbury, shop and pick up anything we may have forgotten?" Sky adds, thinking of looking for some pickles in the city grocery stores.
" OK, let's finish setting up camp then, and we can walk the short distance into the city. Make sure you all have a flashlight and batteries, just in case you need to make the trip to the little birdie's room in the middle of the night" Angel Girl instructed as she started to hammer the pegs for her tent into the ground.
Suddenly there was a scream , shattering the calm chatter of the eggcited birds. "Little Angel!" Angel Girl yells, dropping her hammer and running to where she had last seen L'il Angel and Dixie working on their tent. Everyone had turned at the sudden yell, rushing to see what had happened.
Angel Girl began to laugh as she saw the predicament that her fister was in this time.
"Wait! We'll get you out Little Angel" she said, trying to stop laughing. There was Little Angel caught up in the tent, rolled up like a cabbage roll. Her head and toes sticking out each end.
"How'd you get into a mess like this?" Sweetpepper asked arriving to help
"Don't even ask" Dixie said, shaking his head. " she said she knew how to set it up, so she climbed inside to get the poles in place and suddenly, POOF, she was wrapped up like this" Dixie tries not to giggle at the mess his wife-bird got into, but it sure was hard. Little Angel was squirming to get free, but instead the tent was getting even more tangled up.
With much effort and work Little Angel was freed from the tent, and with the help of Kiddo, Sky and Dixie, the tent was up, and ready to go. Little Angel sat wings crossed as she watched, annoyed that the tent had tried to east her on the very first day. "Oh come on Sweetie" Dixie says, taking her by the wing,"we will go take a look around. Maybe we can find a souvenir."
Angel Girl leads the way into the city, "Let's stay together so no birdie gets lost" looking at L'il Angel. "Tomorrow we begin our trip around the Island."

Day 1--Welcome to Cape Breton Island part 1
Hello everybirdie, my name is Angel Girl. I am a member of the SKY Flock, and this month's BOTM candidate. I would like to take this first day to introduce myself a little bit, and outline our month long trip to beautiful Cape Breton Island, Nova, Scotia, Canada.
I arrived at the Sky flock several years ago when my new owner became too afraid of me to keep me. I had lived with my first owner for the first five years of my life. I was born to his father's flock in the Barrie, Ontario area. I was a much loved, and pampered pet, who enjoyed the best of food, and attention. I even have a custom made large cage. When the relationship between my daddy and mommy fell apart I was posted for sale on the internet and ended up in Peterborough, Ontario,.
Why my new owner ever got me will forever be a mystery, but was, in part motivated by my Momma Deb telling her that she had wanted an African Grey for many years and was considering a clutch of Cameroons. My new owner had the very best of intentions, but lacked Parrot handling skills and experience. She was afraid of me, and when I made an escape from my cage, was unable to get me home again, and resorted to using a broom to "herd" me along. I came to hate the broom, as I was daily allowed out, but broomed back to my cage. Eventually I began to attack the broom, and the one holding it aggressively, biting and screaming my displeasure. After several months of war, my owner contacted my Momma Deb and asked her if she would take me in. My Momma Deb was very happy to go get me. She found me cowering in the back of the cage, locked in the back bedroom. I was quickly "caught up" with a towel and placed into a carrier. My cage and I were loaded up, and I was off to my new forever home.
It took a lot of work to get to the place were I trusted Momma Deb. She endured many hard bites, and one attack on that broom she was using to clean the floor. Since Momma Deb didn't give-up, I decided that I would trust her, and have since become Momma's special Girl. I have an extensive vocabulary of words, and sound effects, and I love singing my many songs. Enough about me.
This month we will be exploring Cape Breton Island, along the Cabot Trail by horse-back. IF any-birdie does not have a horse from CHUEY's BOTM Cattle Drive please let me know and we will round up one for you. We will be camping outdoors, enjoying many fun adventures, taking part in some Celtic festivals and games, and maybe even end up sparkled as my Fister Little Angel and Dixie Adler joy us for the trip. Pack up your camping gear, and ready to ride.
See everyone tomorrow as we take flight to Cape Breton. (SKY has transported our horses there by trailer).
Hugs and love

Day 31--The final Trail to Wyoming
Well, you can bet we sure had a merry time watchin' Bart, and his rustlers tryin' to get that mess off their feathers and cowboy outfits. The harder they tried, the worse mess they got themselves into. Jenny-Lynn just stood there, wings on her hips, laughin' so hard I wondered she didn't fall over. We came outta the brush and from behind them rocks to enjoy the show. Bart was cawin' and cussin' like a crow, but the more he tried, the worse it got. His wings got to stickin to his cowboy hat, then he fell again onto them ants and he was rollin like a dog with fleas.
"Ain't ya gonna help me Jenny-Lynn?" Bart pleaded as he tried in vain to get his wings off his head.
"Nah, I'm kinda enjoyin the show myself." JL sat down on a boulder and watched. The others gave up their fightin' and tryin and just stood their, sticky glop droppin' off in puddles onto their boots.
"Bart, we give up! You can try to take them cows ya gotta mind to, but we quit!" Twitch turned and looked at us, "you can shoot us if ya wanta, but we don't want your herd no more."
"You get, don't let us be seein' any sign of ya ever agin, or we'll be hangin from a rope" I finish and looked at them, grinning widely. "Now vamoose" It took but a few seconds before they began to wobble, and stumble off down the Trail, I had no doubt we'd seen the last of them. "Now Bart, what ya gotta say for yourself. You know the law of the West is hangin' but I don't have no heart for the likes of that. Instead you'll work for Lizzie, do all the dish washin, and ever she has a problem with ya, she's free to toast ya." Bart looked sadly at the mess he was in, and silently nodded his agreement. After much scrubbin in the river he came up as clean as a scoundrel like him could be. He worked quietly and nervously for Lizzie all the way to Wyoming where we cut him loose hopin' he'd learned his lesson. I'm a proud Trail Boss at how well you all learned to rope and ride, herd, and protect the herd of Long-horned Cattle all the way from Texas to Wyoming. You shot, and fought like the very best of them seasoned cow-punchers, ya ought be real proud of yourselves.
At this time I wish to thank each and everyone of you for your awesome support, both by voting daily and your encouraging words. I truly hope you all enjoyed your month long adventure on the Western Trail, and perhaps came away with a little bit of historical information too.
A very special thank you goes out to Momma Deb of the SKY FLOCK for all her photo editing, and assistance, without which I would never have been able to write such an eggciting, and fun adventure. Momma Deb is a real story-teller, and I appreciate her hard work, input and help.
Now, with my last blog posted I am heading back home for a short visit with my own Momma. I know she missed me while we rode the Trail, forged the River and fought the bad-birds. I have missed my hus-bird Mikey D too.

Day 29--The Guns Blazin--Battle at Pegleg Crossin'
WOW, now that was too close for comfort. Chuey here with today's Cattle Drive Update. It was just as the sun was settin' in the West, that the gun fight began. In the growin' darkness it becomes mighty hard to see what lurks in the brush near by a rider. The herd was grazin quiet-like when all of a sudden all "hell-broke-loss". Cinn-A-Bun had just rode long-bout the outer south flank of the herd, when somethin' went whippin' pass his ear, dang-close too.
"What the ???" he shouts in shock, kneein' Firestorm into a gallop to rejoin Kiddo, Gus and Willie toward the drag. " RUSTLERS!" went up the call as bullets came a sailin' towards the riders. Well, it wasn't but a second, before Jenny-Lynn, Sky, Snowy and Raffi was kneelin behind the boulders gun a blazin in return fire. Arrows flew towards the treeline, and a yelp came from the grown blackness, " Bart, I dun been shoot in the Vent."
I was just returnin from my trip to spy on their where-abouts when they'd jumped horses and took off into the night. I had hoped to get back before the fun started but let me tell ya, by the time I returned to the herd, the cows was racin' in panic towards the Crick, guns was blastin away at them Rustlers. I sprung off Cutter and dived behind the nearest rocks, takin' careful aim at a big Black galoot, ridin after our herd. He let out a yip when I dusted his tail feathers but good.
"BOSS, BOSS!?" Hulk came crawlin low over to join in the fight. "Jenny-Lynn and Raffi have Black Bart pinned down in cross fire. She wants tah know what you want her to do?"
"Tell her to bring him in alive if she can, we don't want no blood shed"
Hulk got off a few good shots as he ducked and dived the bullets wavin' his way back to where JL had Bart in her sights.
Jedi, Panther, Apache and Spot had managed to make their way up to join Cheyenne brothers. Kaji and Lizzie had their double-barrels blazin' holdin' off the mangy-thieves tryin to steal our Dragon-Wagon. Mikey was busy pepperin' a nasty-tempered bearded crow with rock-salt. "Got- em" he yelled to Kaji as the Crow let out a yelp as the shot bulls-eyed its mark.
"YEE HAAAW, nuthin better then a good gun-fight!" JL yells to me across the open grassland. Pookie and Dixie had raced out after the herd, with TiPaul, Sugar, Chyna and Strawberry in hot pursuit. Angel and Pepper covered the riders as they took care4ful aim towards the trees from where the return fire had come. Pearl and Silver hankered down behind an old wooden box and carefully watched for perfect aim and fired as one. "YOWWWW! Hey that hurt" came the pained response.
Cappy, Chipper and Boo Boo dropped down onto their bellies and began to inch closer to where the Rustlers where hidden. They had a BIG SURPRISE for them. Snowflake and BonBon had been busy mixin up a special gift for their uninvited Rustler friends.

Day 28--Ready for the Battle to come
Well, howdy there all you cow punchers, Chuey here with today's Cattle drive Update. Things are gettin' right touchy 'bout now. With Jenny-Lynn drawn on Bart and evenin' drawn close, we're settin' bout to have us a gun shoot. Black Bart, he's a thinkin' we will be easy pickins but he ain't hankered down long enough to get a real eye-full of just how much bird-power we have on our side.
" Boo, I've been thinkin' long here, and I think maybe we might just take him completely by surprise."Chipper says to me, as I was restin my vent for a spell.
"I was thinkin' likewise myself" I tell her, then firgure I'd best be gettin' back to work. I let out a shrill whistle and Cutter came trotten up ready to go. Springin' into the saddle I head back to check on the drag, and make sure everyone was safe and on the alert back there.
"Sugar? Anything out-a the ordinary back here?"
"Everything is calm and peaceful. Gus and Hulk have rode back to help us keep an eye on the stranglers." Cori says, pointin over by the tree line. I can just make out Apollo and Gus throught he heavy dust floatin' in the humid air.
I give Cutter a quick slap onthe flanks and he is off at a quick trot. We stop by and speak to every wrangler as we make a round about the herd. Pullin back into point position, I settle into my saddle and do me some serious calculatin'. I figuring that we should be cross Brady Creek west of Brady by high noon. From there we enter the hills and high country through to Cow Gap this side of Coleman. That's a long, steep trail we were headin into, what with newborn calves, and rustlers we were certain to have some troubles for sure!
Pulling on my reins, I spin Cutter out from the point and gallop off to the north, Sky and Jenny-Lynn watch from their hidden nest among the rocks. "I wonder what Chuey's up to?" Sky says out loud to no one in particular.
"She's goin to ride round back of those mangy rustlers and get herself some first-hand information. I know it won't be long before that varmint makes his move to steal the herd and collect himself some horse too." JL watches through her telescope.
" Well boyz, it's nae-onto-noon, not much longer now. What easy money this is gonna be Boyz. Change the rands some and collect the cash in Wyoming." Black Bart laugh, spittin chewin-tabaccie from the side of his beak.
"money, lots of money Boyz"
Twitch finishes cinching his saddle on his grey nag, and nods agreement. "Lots of money Boss, lots!"
Chuey listens silently, a grin closing her face, " you just wait "boyz" you just wait!"

  Day 27--Bring it on Bart!
Well, howdy all, Chuey here with our Cattle Drive Update. We made this side of San Saba at Pegleg Crossing by mid-afternoon, but he herds were weary from the quick pace, so we pitched camp early and set about puttin' guards on watch. We'd gotten word back from Sky regardin what they'd been findin' out from thoise Rustlers and Black Bart. As told by Sky, Jenny Holiday Earp Hickok took to visitin again;
"..I want to speak to my old friend alone for a moment!" Jen sits tall in her saddle and rides to meet up with Mr Bart! The two old friends shake wings and Jen says "back off Blackie, let my friends & herd pass peacefully!" Not liking that, Bart slaps leather but Jen pulls hers first, and all of a sudden, Bart is looking down the bore of Jenny's deadly 44! JL holsters her weapon, and says,"ride away, we are even friend" with a quick shoulder bump, the two return to their own people! Jen is under orders not to cause any disturbance and is waiting furthers orders from Trail Boss Ms Chuey."
Chuey rubs her chin, shakin her head, " Sky, Go pick out a dozen birds and post them around Bart's camp, have' em on the ready. We're fixin' to have us a shoot-out!"
Jedi rides over to speak with Chuey, "Boss, I brought you some Cheyenne scouts from my family at the rez. They will watch over us and make sure all of us are safe and not harmed. They will be watching over us with bows and arrows ready !" Chuey looked around, then Jedi pointed to the distant hills, Lifting his Arm, Chuey saw two scouts raise Bows high over their heads. "Thanks pardner, we're well prepared"
Jenny rode away to rejoin Chyna watchin from a distance. "He ain't gonna let this be." Chyna grinned knowin' he was goin' ride his band of rustlers into a mess of trouble."

" Ok boyz, They think they have us scared, Well, we'll be seein' to that" Bart laughs his wicked laughter echoing off the hills and rocks. " get yourselves ready, we're goin' callin" Bart laughs again louder, evil and menacing. His gang of mangy rustlers grin, gettin into their boss's merriment. "Yes sir ye, we'll show'em " twitch says as he saddles up his nag. Mountin up, they ride off to collect themselves a herd of long-horns. Arriving in the rocky brush by the river, they wait for their payday to arrive from down the trail.
" Boss, Boss, we'er all set." Pookie says, riding past to join the point riders out front carryin' their long-riffles across their saddles, Panther, tips his hat and nods, he's ready and waitin' for the show to begin. Cori, Sugar and Falco hold the herd into a straight line for the River ahead, swing-ridin' all the while keepin' eyes on the trail and hills close by. Sweetpepper, with Sweetie and Kacey carry newborn calves on their saddles, too young for the quickened pace of the herd."

Day 26- troubles comin our way
Howdy cow-wranglers, Chuey here with today's Cattle Drive Update. We rode double watches during the night to keep an eye open for our friend Black Bart. We were waitin' for him and his raggedy band of vultures to swoop down on our herd and run' em off in the middle of the night, but all was quiet. Too quiet!
"Boss," Polly whispers " what' d ya think he's up too?"
"Well, ain't too sure. He's been trailin' us since we headed out, ain't sure at all" I answered, not sure what to say beyond that.
" JL and Sky sent back word through Kiddo and Spot that Black Bart had hankered down over yonder by Llano. They been talkin' real quiet-like, makin plans" Jedi reports. I nod, and give Cutter his head as we make one round of the herd to update the others on what I just learned.
We kept the herd close-up and movin' pretty steady through the mornin' and by mid-day we'd already covered six miles. I'd just set down to some hot vittles when Chyna came gallopin' in, stoppin in a cloud of dust and horse sweat. " the rustlers are saddled up and movin to the rocks west of Beef Trail Crossin'. Jenny-Lynn and Sky are followin' 'em so they don't make a slip on us and get us by surprise. "
Chyna hopped off Dyna-Dancer, and Rio grabbed the lead and walked her to the corral, stripin' her saddle off and rubbin' her down good. BonBon ropes a silver dapple and throws the saddle over his muscular back, tightenin' the straps good, and leads him over to where Chyna is eatin' a quick bowl of stew before headin' back to join up with JL and Sky.
"tell them two not to get gun-crazy too soon, we wanta teach Bart a lesson 'bout his thieving' ways"
I grabbed up Cutters reins, as I sprung onto his back, given him a slap on the shoulder we were off on a gallop to warn the point riders to b e ready for the "party"
"Sky, look" Jenny-Lynn points out the hoof prints of two new riders crossin' those of Black Bart and his band of rustlers." Sky leans over the shoulder of his horse Chief and studies them for a minute.
"Yep, looks that way" Sky clicks to Cutter and they move out followin' the new set of tracks for a spell to see who it is that has joined the rustlers. They didn't have to ride long before they spied the gang, settled down in the brush, with a smoke-less fire heatin' a pot of grub. Black Bart was in deep conversation with the two new comers, while the others kept a watch for the herd on the trail. It was here, hidden by the rocks and brush that Chyna caught up with them. She had brought them food from the dragon-wagon and they ate it in silence as they kept watch on their friends below .
Suddenly, the camp was alive with activity as the rustlers caught up their horses, and silently packed up their belongin's. " Ok boys, they're gonna be here in a few hours, lets get us ready, "SLIM, you and Twitch get over to the rock corral and make sure that the herd can't escape when the rest of us drive them in there."

  Day 25--Troubles are a brewin'
Howdy pardners, Chuey here with today's Cattle Trail Update. We had ourselves a restful, peaceful night. The watches went smooth as silk, and not one cow was inclined to stir up any troubles. We filled up on a breakfast of hot biscuits and gravy, bacon, eggs, and some flap-jacks. What a meal that Lizzie, Kaji and Mikey dish out. Could get used to this mighty easy.
As the point riders moved out, aand the dawgies fell into place the mornin' sun was just peakin' over the eastern horizon. I decided to take Baxter and Little Peep with me and scout out ahead a ways for good grazin for the noon stop-over. We'd rode like-wise to four miles when somethin' shiny in the distance caught my eye. We pulled up under the shade of a tree as I watched for a spell. "HHMMMM? Looks like we're 'bout to get us some company" I sat still and watched longer and ate my apple with Baxter and L'il Peep. "Yep! We best be headin' back to the herd, wanta make sure we got the welcome mat out"
By the time we rejoined the herd they were two miles shy of were I'd saw the sun bouncin' off something in the distance. Somethin' like the barrel of a gun!"
"Jenny_lynn, Chyna, Sky, I need ya to ride over towards the west some, cut back at Beef Trail Crossin' . I think we're about to have us some fun."
Sky and the others rode off at a gallop. Pistols were carried in Holsters worn in varies manners. A multitude of holster styles existed and each was made for a specific need. Rifles were carried in hand or in scabbards attached to the saddle or wagon. 'Cowbirds' carried their pistols as tools and kept them in a readily available condition. Most cowbirds were good to excellent marksbirds, relying on their guns to stay alive on the trails.
"We're in for some fancy shootin' cowboys and girls, best ya all get your side-arms at the ready." I rode from wrangler to wrangler. A tension spread swiftly through the group, as we pushed the herd along the trail, gettin' them to pick up a l'il speed.
"BOSS, you sure we can't handle Black Bart?" Zippy asked nervous of the possible outcome
"There's but five or six of 'em against all us, we'll lickin' right good and dandy Zippy!"
Jenny-Lynn, Sky and Chyna had made record time to Beef Trail Crossin, and were doublin back to come up behind them thievin' feather-lice infected rustlers. They ground hitched their horses and creep up nice and slow until they had them in their sights. "Think we might as well blast'em now? " JL asked eager for a good fight.
"Not yet, let's have some fun first" Chyna whispers softly
Sky took a small stone and tossed it far to the left. The rustlers wiped round as if a Ghost had touched ' em." What was that boss?"
"Ain't nuthin' but a chipmunk or the likes of it." Black Bart watched as in the distance the dust cloud appeared, " herds acomin' get ready lads"

Day 24-- Where the green grass grows
Howdy all, Cowgirl Chuey here with Sunday's Cattle Drive update. It's firstly important to note that after a lot of yellin' hazin' and chasin' we got the herd and remuda cross the Red River and gathered safety on the other side. We sure were bushed when it was all said and done, but there's no rest for the wranglers on the trail. We got ourselves a good fed of grub, and set about a spell talkin' of all the places we'd so far passed through.
The trail proceeded northward, crossing the James River near the site of present Noxville, the Llano at Beef Trail Crossing, the San Saba at Pegleg Crossing, and Brady Creek west of Brady. The trail left the Hill Country through Cow Gap. The Western Trail crossed the Clear Fork of the Brazos near Fort Griffin at the Butterfield-Military Road crossing, where the second feeder trail from Tom Green County, which ran through Buffalo Gap, joined the trunk route. Thence the Western Trail proceeded through Throckmorton, crossed the Brazos at Seymour and the Pease at the site of Vernon, and veered northeastward to leave Texas at what later became known as Doan's Crossing.
The Western Trail crossed the Prairie Dog Town Fork of the Red River a few miles north of Doan's, to enter Greer County, near present day Warren, Oklahoma. We will soon leave the current trail north of Abilene, to take the Potter-Bacon Cutoff to cross the Llano Estacada, ending in Wyoming. Leaving the river, the trail now enters the most dangerous section of the route, the Cheyenne-Arapaho Reservation. Here the drovers frequently meet American Indians who want to supplement their meager government rations with fresh beef. Usually the meetings ended amicably, but in the mid-1880s military escorts were frequently assigned to the trail. However, we have already made contact with the tribal leaders and will cross the territory unharmed.
Weighin' heavy on everyone's mind is the report of Jenny-Lynn, that Black Bart and his gang of rustlers have their hearts set on takin' the herd for themselves. To help protect the wranglers we are riding doubled up, and everybird is packin fire-power, just in case it comes to a real-life western shoot-out.
The cows move slowly, tired from their day long crossin' of the Red. We don't push them hard, but wanta try to get some distance between us and the rustlers before we hit the rough, rugged mountain-like terrain to come. Since Dragon-wagons are prime attack targets because they carry not only food supplies but ammunition. medical and other stocks as well, we have appointed JL, Sky, BB, Chyna and Kiddo to ride guard until we hit the Kansas border northwest of Buffalo Gap.
Happy Trails to you, until, we meet again

Day 23--Crossing the River part 2
Whoopie, Ride 'em down Pookie" I hollered as the bull charged through the millin' herd at the water's edge, and out into the open grasslands beyond, followed by half the herd. Susan and Kacey light out after the herd at top speed, cutting cows back towards the river. The panic of one cow runs wild through a herd, it becomes a dangerous game for both riders on their horses and the herd itself.
" Cut her off Zippy" Rio yells over the thunder of hooves. Zippy maneuvers her horse into the herd, and swings the horse towards the river, turning a fleein' heifer and calf, several others follow her, as they slow their pace to a fast walk in the right direction.
"Giddiy up" Sky slaps Chief on the shoulder as he lunges out of the rushing river, after the runaways. Pookie let's his rope fly, catching the bull by the front leg. He tumbles forwards to the ground, giving the riders time to get in front of the stampede and turn them back. Pookie holds the rope taunt with his horse preventin' that bull movin' for a spell. Finally with the herd slowin' and turning towards the River, the bull staggers to his feet as the rope slacks. Pookie is joined by Gus as they haze him back into the center of the herd once more.
"What expert horsemanship!" I yell across the River to those responsible for stopping a stampede. We'd managed to hold the herd already crossed calmly in the sea of grass. "Ok, let's get' em over" I yell and wave my ok, as the herd is once more pushed into the water and swam over.
It takes a goodly part of the day to move our herd across the river, what with strays, them gettin' bogged in the mud on the banks and needin' pulled out, and the water pulling weaker ones with the current. Finally with the calves swam over across saddles, the herd is put to graze as the horses and Dragon wagon prepare to join us.
"Alright, let's get the wagon over" Sky and Jenny-Lynn help the ferry man roll the heavy vessel onto the raft,. It's goin' be a slow process to carry first the wagon, then the supplies across the rushing river. The ferry is pulled by heavy rope cables strung shore to shore. It is hard, difficult work, but surely as not it is finally finished. As Kaji, Lizzie and Mikey help re-load the supplies the remuda is driven from their oped corral towards the river.
" OK Boss, let's have'em go" Peppino calls out to Chuey on the opposite shore. Chuey raises her cowbirdhat and the push begins. The horses are herded for the bank and quickly out into the moving waters. We don't give'em time to rethink this. Horses are good swimmers, but some still flail wildly and have to be roped and pulled to the banks, amongst the screams and high shrill fearful whinnies.
Sugar sees a white gelding pulled under the current, tossing her rope over his slender neck as he comes to the surface further down stream. She clicks to Thorin who lunges for shore and up the grassy embankment. The gelding pants heavily.

Day 22- Crossing the rushing Red River
Howdy pardners, Chuey here with a brief update on our progress on the Cattle Trail.
With Jenny-Lynn's safe return from checkin' out the rustlers I was able to have some peace of mind. We have other pressing matters at hand. We'd no doubt deal with them rustlers mighty soon. Sky, Jenny-Lynn, Jedi, Ms BB and Pearl at point we began to haze the herd towards the river. The roar of the water fillin' our ears long before we arrived outside Doan. Sugar, Boo Boo, Snowflake, Chipper, and Cori helped to round up the cows with young calves at their feet. Ropin' the calves and tying 'em over their saddles for safety. The others took to yowlin' and Yippin' to stir the herd to movin'. Cattle by nature are leery of fast moving water, and this River was no different. They hesitated as they were pushed by those behind them down the red rocky banks into the cold water.
Jenny usin' her horse, Get Away, bumped the lead steer to get him committed to the swim, the others bulked as they entered the river, bawling and tryin' their darnedest to turn back. With a swat on the butt the lead cow plundered into the water, eyes wide with fear, but she continued to move, swimming as she reached the middle of the nearly mile wide crossing.
"Move' em long, gitt-along, cow-bosssssss, Git-ip, move 'em up." Sky yellsa t the frightened cattle, forcing them to swim to reach the other side safely. " JL, Rope that red before she falls" Jenny-Lynn ropes her in one try, pulling the tired heifer to safety closer to the bank.
"Calf down" Snowflake yells to Jedi who plunges his horse along side the calf being tugged away with the current. " Got 'er" he yells out, pulling the calf beside his horse and out of the river's rushing waters.
"Bring 'um up" Sky yells as the herd continues to file into the river on the Doan banks. " BB, black steer" he yells over the river's roar. BB swings Sun Dancer to the right and ropes a steer who has fallen before he got trampled by those behind him. The horses whinny loudly out of fear and tension as their riders push the herd forward. "Susan, white heifer to your left" A yearling heifer flails terrified in the strong current, pulled down stream. Susan races Thorin down the banks to cut off the drownin' heifer, roping her over the horns she backs her horse up pulling the bawling heifer to the opposite bank.
" YAAAAW!!! Get-a-long" Spot yells to the now hesitant cattle. He uses his horse to push them to the bank and Silver drives them on into the water.
Dixie, Cookie, Hulk and Cydney swim their mounts across the river just south of the herd, to help pull out stranded cattle to safety.
Suddenly a bawl cuts the air as a red checked bull enters the river, tryin' to turn back he bumps those behind him causing them to split and run away from the river. Celine and Polly race after him, with Zippy Rio and Pookie cutting in front of the herd following at his heels. We had a stampede headin' our way if they can't turn'em back to the water.

  Day 20-takin' a break in Doan's Crossing
Howdy Pardners; It's a fine day to be settin' back relaxin' in Doan. Now, I must be tellin' ya, that some of these cow wranglin' birdies are inside Doan's Store at the Saloon but all in all it's a mighty good day. The chuckwagon is being restocked as I enjoy restin my vent right here in front of the Doan General Store. Henceforth it's a mighty long trail to the next town along the line. I wanta take today to tell you all a bit about the duties and requirements for each position on this cattle drive.
Trail Boss--must be very experienced, a quick thinker, cool-headed, co-operative and have leadership skills. Carries full responsibility for the entire group-cowbirds, cows, horses. Locates water, grass with the help of scouts, knows how to track different animals, keeps the peace between cowbirdies, and handles all money. Wages in 1880--$90.00 month
Point Bird--High level of experienced, most honored position on the drive, determines direction of the cattle-must be reliable, work in groups, and works in twos keeping lead steer/cow going the correct direction. Wages in 1880--$30-40 month
Swing or Out riders--must have some experience, must be knowledgeable about cattle and using horses to keep them in line on the trail. Position third ways back from the head of herd Wages in 1880 $30-40 month
Flank Riders--must have some experience on trail drives, must know how to ride a horse, Cuts in cattle that stray, rides two-thirds way back from the front of the herd. Wages in 1880 $30-40 month
Drag Riders--Usually an entry-level position--willing to work hard, endure dust & dirt kicked up by the herd, rides at the back of the herd to keep older, calves and cows etc up to herd. Wages in 1880 $30-40 month
Horse Wrangler--Entry-level job, work hard and learn, drives the remuda of horses before the chuckwagon and ahead of the cattle, rounds up extra horses, herds them into a rope corral several times daily, keeps the horses together, eating grass until change over time for cowbirds, makes sure ridden horses get extra feed-corn and grass, keeps saddle horses grouped together, helps the cook gather wood, harness the chuck wagon team. Wages in 1880 $20-30 month
No matter what position a cow bird has, it entails hard work, sweat, and determination and a drive to get the job done. Tomorrow we start our crossin' of the Red River, a dangerous and difficult task for both herd and riders. I think I'll be moseyin' along to the Saloon myself to wet-my-beak.

Day 19--The Gathering at the River
Yeehaaaaw; Chuey here with a Cattle Drive update. We've been watchin' some would be rustlers whilst the herd was running full out towards the Red River. Trustin' that my wranglers had everything under their control I sat a while and simply watch and listen. The herd slows as it nears the water, as the foamy wet horses breath deeply catchin' a breath after miles of gallopin' all out to keep up with them dawgies.
There's many a peril on the long western trails, from snakes to rustlers, but none is as deadly as the Red River Crossing. Historian Andy Adams described Doan's Crossing:
"Red River, on the northern border of Texas, was a terror to trail drivers. The majestic grandeur of the river, with its red bluff banks, the sediment of its red waters marking the timber along its course, while the driftwood, lodged in trees and high on the banks, indicated what might be expected when she became sportive or angry. The crossing had been in use only a year or two when we forded, yet five graves, one of which was less than ten days made, attested her disregard for human life. It can safely be asserted that at this and lower trail crossings on Red River, the lives of more trail men were lost by drowning than on all other rivers together. Doan was the last town before entering Indian Territory and was the last spot where US inspectors were stationed to inspect herd brands before allowing them to enter Oklahoma.
"The thundering of the herd could be herad clear to Doan and beyond, the dust cloud arriving before the thristin' herd. I figured I'd better get moseyin' along, and keep check on the rustlers later, as the wranglers might be needing me, and the birds to get them back from the water before they drank themselves to death. We creep out real quiet-like and urged our mounts into a gallop and caught up just shy of Doan.
" Boss, what's up with the rustlers?" Sky asked riding fast to catch up
"They ain't movin no where fast, so we left'em settin' and joined back up to bring these dust-bags under control again." Chuey wiped sweat from her forehead with her bandanna.
" Pookie and Snowy have rode up front to cut them back before they hit the water full-out" Cookie yells as he races past on Thunderbolt. " Spot and Chipper are guarding the remuda, to try to keep the horses in check."
The sign for Doan's store whipped pasta s the herd started to pull to a stop atthe river edge, heads down, gulpin' water up like a sponge. " Sugar, Sweetie! Cut them two cows back before they drop dead from over drinkin"" Panther yelled trying to get a red checked bull back into the herd without much success. As the dust began to settle, we could see that the herd had spread out over a mile of river bank in both directions. It would take a lot of skill, energy, and work to gather them back into a herd. Quick horse changing, with Peppino and BonBon saddling and ropin our mounts expertly to keep us movin them Long horned devils back in place.

  Day 18--Red River's calling
Phew what a long night. Keepin' watch on them Rustlers, and holdin' the herd close is a job, especially when they smell water. These Long-horned varmints can smell water for miles and when they do, it's a job to keep them from stampeding. With the comin' of mornin' we are still hankered down watching them, keepin' the rustlers under close eye.
Leaving the herd under the care of my trusty cow-hands, they're up and movin by first light. We're headin' to Doan today,at the Texas-Oklahoma line and our first difficult river crossing. Corwin Doan settled at the crossing back in 1878 and built his homestead there in 1881. Doan had a large stock of goos to supply the cowboys who annually drove cattle along the Western Trail. The village of "Doan't Crossing" had 14 or more buildings. Doan, his wife Liddie (1850-1905), and their 3 children entertained people from all walks of life - English lords to Indians - in theirs adobe house. In fact it is estimated more then seven million head of cattle and horses made this difficult crossing between 1876 and 1893.
"You all better head back to the herd," Chuey instructed, " Kiddo, Jenny-Lynn, TiPaul and Cori, you stay hankered down here and keep watch."
"Ok Boss" Boo Boo exclaimed sneakin' back all quiet like to where our horses have been ground hitched.( reins left hanging from the bit, used when horses might be needed to make a quick escape). The others rode back to the south of where the rustlers where hidden out to pervent their horses getting wind of them and tippin' them off.
"I'm goin' sneak up closer to get a better look, see if I ain't able to hear what they have up their sleeve." Chuey crouched down low and worked her way silently towards boulders not more then 50 yards from where the rustlers sat drinkin; their coffee and eattin' grub.
Sugar, Polly, Zippy, Moggie and Susan where riding point today, but the herd was itchin to run from the get-go. They kept turnin' the anxious cows back into the herd. The whole mass of cattle began to trot as they caught wind of the river ahead. Cinn-A-Bun, and Chyna rode from the drag to talk to the Point riders.
"We might as well give'em head and let'em run, we are can't keep them in and the out-riders are spending their time cutting strays back in. If we don't they're goin' a break anyways and we'll be chasing them to the Red anyways."
"You're right, tell the others to pull out a ways and give them their head." Sugar told them
Cinn-A-Bun went to the south side and Chyna took up the north and rode by to tell the others to pull a ways off and let'em run. The herd picked up it's pace as the smell of water grew stronger in their nostrils. Suddenly the lead cow took off on the run, with the others moving like a massive dusty wave over the ground. The sound of pounding hooves would be heard clear to Doan and beyond.
We're in for a fix of troubles now I'd say, sures hope they can get the herd back from the water in time.

Day 5--no water at Beaver Pass
Day5--lookin' for water
Howdy Pardners Cowgirl Chuey here with today's BOTM posting. It's been a long hot ride today as the cowbirdies began Hazin (driving) the cattle at 5 am sharp. Miss Lizzie and Kaji had a fine spread o beans, hot biscuits, back-bacon and black coffee wait as our eyes opened on another day along the Great Western Trail. The final watch was in and eager to get some shut-eye but weren't gettin' any until later tonight.
Our day began easy enough as Sky, BB, Chipper, Falco, Dixie and yours truly took up point to get them long-horned varmits movin after a night of rest and grazin. Well, we hadn't gone more then a mile when Kiddo came flying in at break-neck speeds relaying the message that the waterin' hole at Beaver pass was bone-dry and we'd have to head further east to find water. A ride of an extra 7 miles today.

Movement of cattle

Cattle drives have to strike a balance between speed and the weight of the cattle. While cattle could be driven as far as 25 miles (40 km) in a single day, they would lose so much weight that they would be hard to sell when they reached the end of the trail. Usually they were taken shorter distances each day, allowed periods to rest and graze both at midday and at night. On average, our herd could maintain a healthy weight moving about 15 miles (24 km) per day.

On average, a single herd of cattle on a long drive (for example, Texas to Wyoming) numbered about 3,000 head. To herd the cattle, a crew of at least 10 cowboys was needed, with three horses per cowboy. Cowboys worked in shifts to watch the cattle 24 hours a day, herding them in the proper direction in the daytime and watching them at night to prevent stampedes and deter theft. The crew also includes a cook, who drives a chuck wagon, usually pulled by oxen, and a horse wrangler to take charge of the remuda, or spare horses. The wrangler on a cattle drive was often a very young cowboy or one of lower social status, but the cook was a particularly well-respected member of the crew, as not only was he in charge of the food, he also was in charge of medical supplies and had a working knowledge of practical medicine.

Stopping at high noon, our NightHawks ( night watch riders) got some shut-eye sure enough. Whiles the rest of us'en ate our fill of some a Miss Lizzie grub.

Head'em out, move um up cowbirdies. Get-along little dawgies(cattle)

Move um on out! Day 4
Move um on out!
Howdy cow punchers, Trail-Boss Chuey here with today's blog. Sorry for the late start but trying to round up free-range horses takes time. Now that most of our cowbirdies are mounted up, we can begin to move these Long-Horns out. Before we leave everyone better check their packs for a bandana, one change of clothes, water bottle, oats bag for your horse, hot roll ( sleeping bag) and any birdsonal items you might need along the trail. Please remember that your horse has to carry your bags so keep it light. As you know we will be moving our herd along the old Great Westener Cattle Trail. The Great Western Cattle Trail was used in the 19th century for movement of cattle to markets in the East. The trail was also known as the Western Trail, the Dodge City Trail, or the Old Texas Trail. The Great Western Trail begins at Bandera west of San Antonio and passes near Buffalo Gap and Abilene, in West Texas. Continues on north of Dodge City, Kansas to Ogalalla NB and Belle Fousch SD. It runs west of and roughly parallel to the Chisholm Trail. Our final stop will be Wyoming.

"Alright let's move um' on out" Chuey calls out, sounding a loud shrill whistle by placing her wing-tip to her beak. The point riders move ahead of the herd tot he south and north to keep the lead cow moving north along the trail. OUT-RIDERS keep the herd walking in a walk of cattle and dust. NO MORE THEN 6 cattle wide at any point.
Kiddo and Jedi, Panther, Spot and Strawberry ride their mounts hard to the left to scout out the land ahead for both rustlers and watering holes. It is their job to keep the herd, drovers(cowbirds) safe.
The rest of the riders keep the cows in the herd formation, allowing their horses to cut strays back into the group.
Sky with BB, Cinn-A-Bun, Hulk, TiPaul, Gus and Raffi ride to the far outer right of the rear cattle keeping them up with the herd. When a herd moves along the trail every cowbird must keep a sharp eye for strays, wandering cattle that can break up the herd and cause stampedes. Drag-riders--those riding BEHIND the herd have a hard, dusty job of keeping older, very young or stragglers from being separated from the mass of moving cow-flesh before them.

In large herds like we are moving they are divided up into groups of 500 to 1000 cattle herds, and spaced no less them one mile apart along the trail. The remuda of horses comes behind the cattle so they can move at a slower pace, as each cowbird will change horses atleast once daily so that their main horse is not over-worked. A good cutting horse is worth it's weight in gold.
"Keep the herd tight," Chipper gets that black and white cow back in fast! "Great job!"
keep them moving on up the line

  Hi Miss Chirpy
Howdy Cowbirdies, Trail-Boss Chuey here with today's blog. I am pleased to that most have rounded up their cow-pony and have packed their supplies and bed roll. Today we will saddle up and ride to the outer pastures to gather the last stragglers of our herd and bringum' into the corrals. I wanta tell ya a little about the history of the cattle drives, and get ya familiar with our herd of Texas Long-Horns.
In 1874, Captain John T. Lytle and several cowboys left South Texas with 3,500 head of longhorn cattle and a herd of saddle horses. Five years later, the route Lytle cut out of the prairie to Ft. Robinson, Nebraska, had become the most significant and traveled cattle trail in history- The Great Western Cattle Trail. Though less well known than the Chisholm trail, the Great Western Cattle Trail was longer in length and carried cattle for two years longer than the Chisholm. The Great Western Cattle Trail saw over seven million cattle and horses pass through Texas and Oklahoma to railheads in Kansas and Nebraska - an important factor in developing the cattle industry as far north as Wyoming and Montana.
The Texas Longhorn, one of the state's most iconic symbols, has been hoofing through Texas history for centuries. This distinctive breed of cattle played a vital role in Texas' heritage, and the state maintains a herd of traditional longhorn, allowing residents and visitors to experience these graceful animals first-hand. Long-horns are ornery, powerful cattle, well equipped to life on the rugged Texas wastelands. Adorned with massive pronged horns, LongHorns are capable of protecting themselves from predation. Hardy, and muscular they easily traveled the trails from pasture to stockyards with minimal losses on route. A word of warnin' to my trail hands--never get between a cow and her calf.

The Great Western Trail traversing this area with it's origin at Bandera, Texas, just to the NW of San Antonio, about 450 miles south of the Red River, and it's destination of Dodge City, Kansas, about 45 miles north of Indian Territory. Some historians called the trail the old Doan Trail, because it crossed the Red River at Doan's crossing. We will be heading north on the trail into Wyoming.

Well, Let's header on out boyz and girlz, let's get them dawgies corralled so we can hit the trail at sunrise. Tomorrow we'll be dividing into our positions with the herd and remuda of horses. We'll need eight scouts to ride ahead to check on waterin' holes and signs of rustlers.
