I grew up having a couple parakeets and I always remember them being awesome despite never really spending too much time playing with them. About 4 years ago I decided to add a parakeet to our family and after I bought Luna I started to really read about parakeets and enrichment and I instantly fell in love with the parrot world. I pretty quickly after added a 2 more parakeets to our flock (much to my wife's dismay at first) and I really began diving into studying the bigger parrots. I was really interested in a bird about the size of a conure and was really going back and forth between a Sun Conure or a Green Cheek conure. I then came across an article about Poicephalus parrots and I became really intrigued at the description on these cool birds especially the size of Senegals and Meyers. I really began to research Poicephalus more and quickly became a huge lover of these birds because of their good nature and playful nature, fairly quiet (which I soon learned I could never live with a Sun Conure), can entertain themselves and be fairly good independant birds while still sometimes being cuddly, and pretty good speaking ability. I moved up to the Bay area and brought my whole family (flock) with me. It had been about a year and a half since I had started researching the bigger parrots so I started looking for a breeder now that I narrowed my search down to either a Senegal or a Meyers. I went over to a local breeders house and she had 1 weaned Meyers and 3 weaned Senegals. For the most part I had just gone to look and check out the birds and although I had purchased a cage and a few toys prior to this I wasn't planning on bringing home a bird with me that day. She brought all 4 birds out and we all played on a table with some little foot toys and I had such a good time playing with those birds. There was one in particular who just wouldn't leave me alone and just wanted to hang out with me. Really I felt like Maui picked me and I had to bring him home. It's been a little over 2 years now and I am so glad I did..

Active within 1108 Days Hi! My name is Maui I am from Livermore, CA. Mau Mau Mau 5 years old M He loves mango's. Maybe more than anything else. He also enjoys banana chips and getting a whole almond to play with and crack open. He also really likes safflower seeds and millet when he gets it. On top of his cage with the cage top open. He also enjoys his travel cage and I am working on buying a house where hopefully I can create a good hangout play area for him. Maui does not like when I have him on my hand and I am not paying attention to him. He likes to give a little nip to remind me he's there. He does not like people wearing hats especially red hats and when he gets a chance to stand in front of a mirror he gets mad when I pull him away from the mirror. I think most of all Maui loves our cool little family. It's me, my wife, 2 young daughters (8 & 6), our Yellow Lab Lani, and 3 cool little parakeets who have their own flight cage. He get's a great diet of pellets and lots of fruit and veggies given to him by all members of the family and I think he really feels loved. I am the only one who brings him out of the cage because my wife is a little timid but this is something we are working on and lately my 6 year old has really shown some natural bird skills. Maui is in a happy home full of crazy activities and wild young girls running around and screaming and a quirky but sweet yellow lab who Maui loves to try to play with. He loves his head scratches and he loves that he gets a couple new toys every month. Maui is hilarious. Everything I wanted in a parrot and then some. He loves to pick on my daughters especially my 8 year old and loves to tease and play with my dog. He'll call her over and then will drop food on the floor for her. Today he jumped off his cage and landed on the dog while she was sleeping. Needless to say I do not have the 2 of them together unsupervised... He laughs and chuckles and talks a lot. I taught him to say "Weee" when he goes on his swing and he likes to hang upside down while he is swinging.Also recently he has started dancing... The funniest thing ever.. I don't know about Maui's motto but mine is "No rain... No rainbows...".

Hi Maui I think your photo is so cute. I'm a Senegal, too, and there's no doubt we have many wonderful attributes...best of all is that I can entertain myself for long stretches of time. I have a big tree where I hang out. It has a swinging basket and I sit there and talk away to no one in particular! I hope you have a great day!
