  Hi Sammy
Today mom had 2 tours at the museum, one on climate change and biomes with 7th grade, and one with 6th grade called 3 Cultures. The one with the 7th graders was fun, it was interesting to mom to have 2 guys in the new docent class trailing her to see how to do them, too. (She hasn't had men chasing her for the longest time, hahaha.) The second tour had about 100 kids, which meant 10 docents and groups! The halls they visit for 3 cultures are close together, but small. They compare 3 desert cultures, ancient Egypt, Inuits (tundra) from about 100 years ago, and modern Hopi Indians. It's hard not to bump into other docents with their tour groups when the halls are so small and close together, but it's manageable if everyone is going in the same direction.
Anyway, mom is home now and will go out to dinner tonight with her sister. At least the tree and stockings are up and in place! Mom did that yesterday while she was waiting for the furnace people to call about Aunt Gin's house. They called her finally and set up another day, next Tuesday! GAAAAHHH!
I hope you are having a good day and getting some scritches and cuddles today. Hugs, Willie

  Hi Sammy
Thanks for your continuing votes! I love hearing from you every day, too.
Today we are taking some public transportation! Not your common bus, subway, or trolley, but the INCLINE! (Pittsburgh does have the trolleys, buses, and a little subway system as well.) For anyone not from around here, the inclines are a way to get from downtown to either Mount Washington or the South Side, depending on which one you take. The first 2 shots are the Duquesne Incline, which goes up from Station Square in town to Mount Washington, a neighborhood of Pittsburgh that offers spectacular views of the downtown area. The next 2 are the Monongahela (or Mon) incline, which goes to the slopes of the South Side of the city. Believe it or not, there used to be public steps every bit as steep as the inclines are, where steelworkers and glassworkers would climb from their jobs to their homes. Imagine going up a couple hundred steps after a long day in the mill!
The inclines were originally used for that same purpose, but today they are mostly a tourist attraction, although some folks still park up there and ride to town because parking is cheaper on the hills. If you are a senior citizen, you ride for free, the same as all the public transportation in the city.
I hope you are having a fun day today and getting some sun. It's cold and kind of snowy here. Hugs, Peppino

  Hi Sammy
I know Shanna is home, so mom won't have time to blog, but just keeping you in the loop.
Happy Hanukkah to those who celebrate.
Last night at dog class, Daisy was a bit vocal, but not too bad. The trainer gave mom more tips to work with her and not let Polly feel left out.
Today mom has to go to her friend's house when the furnace guys come to fix it. Her friend is involved with getting her mom into hospice care, and has to sign papers and talk to the hospice people today.
We haven't heard from the guy who looked at the porch roof yet, so we still don't know how much it will cost to fix it. Mom is hoping it won't be too much, so she can still get the kitchen cabinets refaced or replaced. They are the original ones from the 50s, we think, and the hardware on them is shot. Some don't close well at all, and one of them lost the latch, which can't be found any more, since it's not sold anywhere.
I hope you are having a good day and getting lots of cuddles. Hugs, Willie

I know mom is in 7th heaven today with Shanna home! It's wonderful to have your big sister with you, isn't it? I'm glad mom liked the little gift, too. My mom had fun making them.
Thanks for your votes and visits daily! I love hearing from everybirdie.
Yesterday we did everything Heinz, today we are moving to Frick. He was one of those robber baron guys, but he gave back some to the city. Not like Andrew Carnegie, who gave back a ton, but still...
Henry Clay Frick gave Pittsburgh Frick Park, a beautiful space in the eastern part of the city with tennis courts, many playgrounds, walking trails, a nature center, a running track, an exercise track, a bowling green, as well as many picnic pavilions. In my pics today, the fifth and sixth ones are of Frick Art museum, right across from the bowling greens of the park. The Museum isn't part of the park, though. It's a small museum with many beautiful paintings. In a neighboring block is Clayton, a Frick city mansion. One of the pics is the garage. A friend of mom's is curator of the cars. The mansion itself is huge, the rooms are incredible, there is great woodwork inside. Right now it's decked out for the holidays. I don't know if you can see it, but one of the pics shows the staircase draped in greens. There are tours conducted there when people request them.
I hope you are still enjoying your tour of Pittsburgh. I'm having fun bringing to you all the great areas of the city. Hope also that you are having a great day! Hugs, Peppino

  Hi Sammy
This morning mom had a docent meeting at the museum, and after the meeting was their holiday luncheon. Mom's fudge went over well, but there was a lot of food there, so there was leftover fudge to bring home. Mom gave some away to the guard at the gate and the guy collecting parking fees, but there was still more. Maybe Jeff, our neighbor with the Irish setters, will want some. Mom hopes so!
Tonight is dog class, and they will have a class next week, but be off the following week. Mom hasn't had a lot of time to work with Daisy this week, so she's not up to where mom would like.
I hope you are having a great day and getting lots of cuddles. Hugs, Willie

  Hi Sammy
Yep, same family! That's funny about Sharon!
Thanks for stopping by again! I appreciate each blog and vote, and of course, all the hugs, too.
Today we're going to do everything Heinz! You may have noticed that Pittsburgh has some recurring names to things, Carnegie, Frick, Mellon, Heinz...
So the Heinz family built the Heinz plant on the North Side of the city, and they made 57 varieties of things, including Heinz Ketchup. (They also gave PA a great senator, John Heinz, who passed away at a young age.) Anyway, they have given a lot back to the city, so going from the last new pics (5&6) to the first they are 2 shots of Heinz Chapel. This is a nondenominational church located on the University of Pittsburgh campus, very close to the Cathedral of Learning (and the museum). One of mom's nieces got married there, it's a very popular place for weddings.
There are both exterior and interior views. The next 2 pics(3&4) are at Heinz field, the Great Hall. This is where the several Vince Lombardi trophies and super bowl rings, as well as lots of other Steeler memorabilia, are shown. It's like its own museum. The first 2 pics are the Heinz plant and the pickle pin!
When mom was young, Heinz plant tours were popular for kids. Her class toured the plant, and each kid was given a pickle pin at the end of the tour. They must have given out millions of pickle pins in their time here. Today the plant is owned by DelMonte, and lots of the stuff isn't made here any more, but the building still stands.
And we've seen Heinz Field and the Heinz History Museum already. So that's all things Heinz in our area! Thanks for reading, and hope you have a lovely day, and get lots of attention.
BTW, did you see the parrots singing carols on the new newsletter? They are really fun to watch. Hugs, Peppino

Mom is off tonight and tomorrow night and we have lots to get done around the house. Dad will be home Wednesday and he gets to stay home until Christmas is over!!
Mom went to the mall today to the Hallmark store to get Ian an ornament. She got him the Spiderman one this year. Mom has been buying him a Christmas ornament every year since he was born. This will be ornament #32! He has a strange collection of book characters, Godzilla, spaceships and action figures! The very first one was the Poky Little Puppy! That was his favorite book at the time!
Your card arrived today and it is just beautiful! Thank you so much for thinking of us! We appreciate it more than you know!!

  Hi Sammy
The Steelers won! YAY!
Today mom cleaned the runs and the fledgling aviaries at the center. There is a turkey vulture there who hissed at her! She just chuckled and kept working. She knows she's too warm to be attractive to a vulture. Even the red tailed hawk didn't hiss at her. There was a new trainee too, who was afraid of the box turtles. Mom helped her take them out and put them back once their cage was clean. Mom had just finished with the snapping turtle when the woman came and asked about the turtles. There is also a Pekin duck there. These ducks are domestic cousins of Mallards, and people usually raise them for food (you know, Peking duck at the Chinese restaurant?). If you've seen magicians with ducks, this is the duck he most likely has. This guy's leg was really bad when he got there, but it's great now, he's putting weight on it and even swimming in his pond.
Mom will make more fudge tonight for the docent luncheon tomorrow after their meeting. We won't be online until late tomorrow, probably.
I hope you are having a good day and getting lots of cuddles and love. Hugs, Willie

...Samy dear, please tell aunt robin to stop worrying about her sister and mother, and concern her sweet self more with enjoying her daughter's arrival for a Christmas visit for the first time in many years! Aunt Robin deserves some real happiness at Christmas, we are excited for her! You be a good boy while she is there, don't make me come down there and thump you on the head bone, LOL! Our sun seems to have forsaken us, it is gloomy and overcast once again, with a good chance of rain, but it is warming up nicely! After cage duty comes more Christmas Card prep, a true labor of love! Last year we sent out over 50 cards, but may not finish that many this year, it is a time constraint thing, and dad can't sit up straight for very long, his back starts to hurt really bad! Have a Greyt Monday, and give our love to all in your happy home, see ya tomorrow, dear ones...

What a great pic of all of us! Wait til Willie sees it, he'll turn green with envy; oh wait, he already is mostly green. Well, he'll like it, then.
Thanks for the votes every day! I really love hearing from you, too.
Before we leave the Strip, we have to visit St. Stanislaus Church, it's right in the center of things, there on Smallman Street! The first 2 pics in my gallery show one of the oldest churches in Pittsburgh, St. Stanislaus in the Strip. I thought while we were seeing churches, we could go back to Oakland and see St. Paul's Cathedral, the next 2 pics in my gallery. This is the biggest Catholic church in the area. The last 2 new pics are of East Liberty Presbyterian Church, built by the Mellons in the 1800s. The people in Pittsburgh at the time called it Mellon's Fire Escape! Maybe it was, who knows? Today at that church, there are organ recitals every week, and Taize music some evenings. If you don't know the Taize stuff, you should google it and listen to a piece or 2, it's beautiful singing.
So, tomorrow we will go back to Oakland to see other things, including Heinz Chapel.
You may have noted Heinz field, Heinz History museum, and now Heinz chapel; what's that all about? We'll talk more tomorrow! Hope you have a spectacular day. Hugs, Peppino

Thanks for your ongoing support!
Today I posted one more pic of PennMac, the cheese counter! It is as popular as the meat counter, and always crowded.
Next, while we are in the Strip District, we have to visit the Heinz History Center. It's in the heart of the Strip District, and houses Pittsburgh history, including a trolley. They have traveling exhibits there, too. They are doing a Heinz exhibit right now though, featuring Heinz ketchup and pickles, haha. The first pic is one of an evaluation of antiques they do at the history center each August. From what the people bring in to be assessed, they film 10 to 12 episodes of Hidden Treasures, a TV show kind of like Antiques Roadshow, but with all Pittsburghers and their stuff. Some of it is quite valuable.
We probably should leave the Strip soon, so mom doesn't end up buying a lot of stuff. Some of the stores, like Wholey's fish market, are unique and wonderful to visit!
See you tomorrow with another installment of Pittsburgh stuff. Hope you are having a great day! Hugs, Peppino

  Hello Sam~
I hope you are having a great day! We've had no rain and the wind has died down too. It is a bit cooler but it's more like it should be this time of the year!
There was a blackbird running around the furniture pad at mom's store this morning. Someone left the garden doors open and he came on in!! Mom tried to get him to come to her but he just hid around the back of an ottoman. She called her manager and told him that the bird was there and he told her that he had come in the day before. Her manager chased him around for half an hour but couldn't catch him. Mom thought about the fishing nets in the sporting goods department but the mesh is too big and she doesn't want him hurt. Mom suggested they make a trail of seed to the garden door. If he has been in the store for a day he must be hungry. There is a fountain in the indoor garden so he had access to water at least. Mom will find out tonight if they managed to get him out.

There are only 11 more ads until Christmas!hahaha Of course they are going to do an ad the day after also so mom will have to be there at midnight. They have tons of wrapping paper so everyone will probably be in for that. It will get slower after a few weeks. They have a storage event and early tax time and then it will be Valentine's Day! They already have throws, blankets, pillows and decor for Valentine's Day! At least it's all in the stockroom and not out on the floor!
I hope you enjoy your day!! Leaving a vote and a big hug!

  Hi Sammy
You are a WOW bird, we just know it!
Thank you for your daily visits and votes!
Today we are visiting another area of Pittsburgh which used to be little known, but now is pretty much known to any tourist who comes here. It's the Strip District. No, people don't strip to go there, it's a strip along the Allegheny River very close to town. It used to be a large warehouse district where greengrocers, butchers, and other merchants went early in the day (think 3AM) to get fresh supplies for their stores. The public could also go there and shop. In mom's family, they went in the fall to get whole pigs for sausages and crates of grapes for wine. Over time, as more of the public went there to shop for goods, it became specialized into ethnic shopping areas. There were stores like the Pennsylvania Macaroni company, catering to Italians, Stamboolis, catering to near eastern groups, Greek and Asian markets, etc. Today, the strip has become more genteel, so to speak. There are no longer hucksters in the streets, and lots of the big warehouses are now art galleries, bars, dance clubs, or broken into groups of smaller shops, like the Pittsburgh Public Market.
The oldest stores, like PennMac (Mom's favorite), Wholey's Fish market, and a few others are still up and thriving, but smaller markets, like the biscotti company are doing well too. They have even started sidewalk cafes in the strip for the summer trade. It retains some of its old flavor, though, which makes it still a great place to walk and shop.
Have a wonderful day, don't forget to give out kissies for those scritches. Hugs, Peppino

That will certainly will make our sweet aunt Robin smile a lot at Christmas, and we are so happy for her! You be a good boy while she is home for the Holidays! We are having Winter like weather, with a lot of overcast skies, but warming up nicely! We are terribly concerned about our West coast friends with all the rain, high winds, flooding, mud slides, and so on! Kiddo and aunt Pam, Poirot and MB, the fabulous LaHabra flock, Margie Gear and flock in SF, the Proctor flock, and of course our beloved Sugar bear! On the upbeat side, we got another sweet phone call from our aunt Theresa G in Wallops Island, and our Christmas cards arrived, they are great in their simplicity! Our Bird Club Christmas party is tomorrow night, they are so much fun with all those bird loving folks to hang out with, but us birds will be at home, what's up with that!   Hi Sammy
Well, the furnace saga has its happy ending. Not only is the new furnace efficient, it's quiet! Mom loves that you can barely hear it coming on, not like the old one that really needed a muffler to keep the noise down.
Mom did her lecture at the museum today, talked about as many Arctic birds and mammals as she researched, and got done in 65 minutes! She was trying to keep it to an hour, because the teacher requested it. They went through Polar World, Bird Hall, North American Mammals and what's called the 'Dark Hall' on the first floor. That's an area where old exhibits are, not lit up any more, but there are flashlights provided for kids to explore the dark exhibits. Some of the class didn't even know about that spot! Mom knew there were blue geese, eider ducks, and ravens there, though, and she wanted to show everyone where to find them.
I hope you are having a good day. We will probably be in lockdown for the day, because mom has to go to the Waterfront to wrap gifts for the wildlife center from 4 to 8. I bet by the time she gets home, she'll just eat, let the dogs out, and give us a quick scritch before heading off to bed.
I hope you are having a great day and getting lots of cuddles. Hugs, Willie

No Problem!
Thanks for your ongoing support, I appreciate each vote.
Today we are going back downtown to the Cultural District. It's a few blocks of theaters and art galleries in the heart of the city. The 4th and 5th pics in my gallery are mom's favorite site; that's Benedum Center, where mom goes to the opera! The Benedum also houses the Civic Light Opera and the musicals which come here from Broadway. The other shots are other theaters in the area. The first pic is Heinz Hall, where the Pittsburgh Symphony and the Pittsburgh Ballet Theater perform. Guess what they're doing right now? That's right, The Nutcracker! They also do 2 Messiah performances during December: One is a singalong where they seat you according to voice and only have soloists on stage; the other is the Mendelssohn choir with soloists performing. Mom likes them both, of course. Right up the block from the theaters is the High School for the Performing Arts, too, so the students are right in the thick of things.
Thanks for visiting the Cultural District with me today. See you tomorrow, here's a vote for you. Hugs, Peppino

  Hi Sammy
I got Peppino's blog on my page, hope the vote went to his, heehee. If not, I have another vote!
The guys are here putting in the new furnace, but the house is cool. It's a good thing mom got that radiator for us to use, it's come in handy today.
Mom will be home most of the day, at least until those guys are done. She does have to run to the center and pick up some signage for her stint at gift wrapping tomorrow on the Waterfront. She is hoping the space is warm, at least. It's the old Ambercrombie and Fitch storefront, so maybe there will be at least minimum heat. Tomorrow is also her lecture at the museum. She ran around yesterday after her tours so she could be sure to tell the new docents where to find each of the mammals and birds she will talk about. The lecture is in Polar World, but mom is hoping they will have time to go to Bird Hall, too.
The KB has been jumping, and there are still movies and cartoons to watch today! Let's see some classics today, and finish with the cartoons tomorrow.

  Hi Sammy
We're staying at the aquarium today, because mom found pics of the penguins, a good one of the polar bear, and a SEA DRAGON, Yay! The aquarium takes up a couple of levels, the shark tank takes up all the levels, though. It goes from top to bottom of the aquarium, with sharks and other fish swimming in the whole thing. The penguins are out walking in our pic, the zoo people take them for a walk through the zoo at least every week. They live at the aquarium, though. They have one big corner enclosure where they can be on ice or in the water.
Do you love the sea dragon? Mom thinks they are really beautiful fish, and like sea horses, the male keeps the eggs safe in a pouch on his belly. They blend right in with the leaves on the plants and when you go to the aquarium, sometimes it takes awhile to spot them because they are so well camouflaged.
I hope you are having a good day today and I thank you for your ongoing support! Hugs, Peppino

  Hi Sammy
I think the end of your blog got cut off, but mom is going to call your mom in an hour or so. Hope they can find what's wrong, and get Aunt Kaylene some help.
Yesterday mom sent her outline of her lecture to the museum to get printed since our printer is still offline. It was in her mailbox this morning! What a nice person her boss is to have that done so fast. Mom did 3 tours today, one with K (like herding cats), and 2 with 11th graders from West Virginia. Those groups were making a day of it in Oakland. They came from the nationality rooms at Pitt, did an art and natural history tour, then were going to Phipps Conservatory to see the Christmas flower show. By the time mom did the second group, the kids were hungry, so mom hopes their teachers blocked some time for lunch in all that running around! I bet they will all sleep in the buses on the way back to W. Virginia.
Mom thinks all the baking supplies are in the house at last. Of course, that's only until she starts baking and finds out she needs something else...
I hope you are having a great day and getting lots of cuddles. Hugs, Willie

  Hi Sammy
Thanks for your daily votes, I love hearing from you each day and returning the favor.
Today we will look at the *PPG Aquarium. It's part of the zoo at Highland Park, but is newer. Mom was looking for pics of the neat sea dragons, but couldn't find any from PPG. Sea dragons are in the sea horse family, but are much more colorful, and they have a neat tank of them at the aquarium. There are mostly what you would expect there, fish, like sharks and things. They have piranhas, too. There is an outdoor part with PA freshwater fish in it, and the polar bears are there as well. They also have a breeding facility. So the aquarium is home to lots of marine and freshwater fish, jellyfish, a huge coral reef, and lots of other things that live underwater. One of mom's favorite parts is that you can walk underneath the polar bears' pool and if they are swimming, it looks really cool. They have a fisherman's village set up beneath the polar bear exhibit, with lots of artifacts, as well as lists of sustainable fish to eat, and those that are not sustainable. When you leave the aquarium, you can either head home or go to the children's zoo. Mom likes going through the whole place, though, so even though she's far too old to be a child, she heads for the children's zoo at the end of the aquarium.
Hope you are having a good day and that I'll see you again tomorrow. Hugs, Peppino
*PPG stands for Pittsburgh Plate Glass, the sponsor of the aquarium.

  Hello Sam~
I hope you are having a wonderful day! It's windy, wet and dreary here but that is the way it is this time of the year up here. I am enjoying seeing the new Snowmen flags flying out in front of our building. This is the first time the complex has put a seasonal flag out there! Looks great!
We did some Christmas cards this morning but there is still Autumn decorations up! I think mom needs to get a move on and change it out! She put some Christmas music on the computer while we were doing cards and I enjoyed that!
Guardians of the Galaxy came out today and I can't wait to see it! Mom says she thinks it's just my kind of movie! Must be lots of stuff blowing up in it then!!! Ian is going to buy it when he gets to work, but he doesn't get off until 11:30 tonight and I'll be in bed by then!!! I guess I'll have to wait until tomorrow to see it!
My dad was in North Carolina this morning! Actually when he first called he wasn't sure if he was in North or South Carolina. He said he forgot where the state line was! Kind of scary for a truck driver to not know where that state line is!hahahahaha
I hope your day is just perfect! Stomping out a vote and sending hugs your way!

  Hi Sammy
Mom has been working hard to get her lecture for Friday done. She was asked to give a lecture on Arctic birds and mammals to the new docent class at the museum so they will have some background in the natural history of polar regions. She reviewed her research materials yesterday and wrote an outline, but can't print it, as the printer is still offline. Mom sent the outline to her boss at the museum asking her to print it, but if she can't, she still has the handwritten notes.
Today mom has an errand to run, she has to return the old router to Verizon, and found a local place to take it. She thought she'd have to mail it back, so this is better. The guy who was supposed to come look at the porch roof yesterday called as it was getting dark. He was still about 20 miles out, and in heavy traffic, so mom told him to come today when it was light out. He will call before he comes, we hope, since mom has to go to the Verizon place.
I hope you are having a fine day today and getting cuddles and scritchies. Hugs, Willie

  Hi Sammy
Here's today's blog. I didn't hear from you yesterday, hope all is well.
Today we will visit the zoo, a small part of Highland Park, but a well known zoo in the US. There is also the PPG aquarium there, but we will look at it later. The zoo is one of the 6 largest in the country and has changed a lot over the years. Mom used to hate to go there when she was small because all the animals were in cages. Now they all have large open areas to live in, and they look much happier. There is an Asian forest section, with neat tigers and other animals, including a komodo dragon; a primate house with large enclosures for gibbons, lemurs, great apes, and many kinds of monkeys; an African savannah with elephants, zebras, giraffes, etc. There are lots of birds there too, waterfowl, flamingos, owls, etc. There is a children's zoo, an education building, a bat house, a reptile house, a large pool with seals. It's a great place to walk around and spend a day. The zoo even invites senior citizens every Wednesday morning before opening to walk around there instead of walking the mall! I bet you'd love to see the zoo!
Hope you are having a good day. Thanks again for supporting me this month, and here's a vote for you too. Hugs, Peppino

  Hello Sam~
I hope you had a wonderful day! It was pretty nice here. I am on my second toy in a week and had a great time making a lovely pile of wood at the bottom of my play cage! Mom is off tonight and tomorrow night so she took a nap and then had to go to the bank. She and Ian are giving Jennifer a new Kindle for Christmas and she wanted to use dad's account because he gets free shipping on Amazon. I think Jennifer is going to be very surprised!
I got squawked again yesterday morning and couldn't get back on until last night! It keeps happening on Sundays!! I have no idea how long it stays that way since mom had to work last night so she had to give up and go to sleep! I'm so sorry I didn't get by! I thought they took weekends off!hahahahaha I think they should take the weekends off!!
We are watching a movie while I get my notes done then it will be off to bed! I don't know why mom gets so happy about going to sleep! I'd rather stay up all night and play!
We hope your grandma and aunt are both doing well! They are still in our prayers!
Leaving a vote and a big hug!

  Hi Sammy
Mom usually does that angel tree stuff, but this year, she hasn't seen any at all. We wonder where they are. Friday night she is working at the Waterfront, wrapping gifts for the Animal Rescue League. Maybe they will have a tree there, and she can find some kid to buy for. She loves buying kid things.
How's Aunt Kaylene doing? How about Nanny?
The Steelers won yesterday, YAY! It was a great fourth quarter.
This morning at the center, mom did all the RVS animals again. The bats are now in the same cage, which makes it easier, and there are 2 ground hogs inside. The raccoons outside are getting bigger, too. Hope they can go soon. The water pipe for the outside burst, so mom had to lug a bucket filled with water to clean out there today. What a pain! She had to pull it over gravel, and it's one of those big industrial buckets. At least it got done. Today the guys are coming to look at the kitchen and at the porch roof, underneath. We think that's the soffit, but mom isn't sure. If not, it's the fascia, and still needs looked at, since it looks like it's sagging in the corner. Mom is hoping that doesn't mean a whole new roof on the porch.
Mom wrote out all the Christmas cards yesterday and mailed them today when she went by the post office on her way to the hardware store. The lady at the store replaced the light bulb, which was really nice of her. The waxwings now have light again. Mom got a free tank of gas, too, using the perks from the grocery store. It's the first time she ever got a free tank! Buying gift cards paid off.
I hope you are having a good day and getting lots of attention! Hugs, Willie

  Hi Sammy
We do have fracking going on around here, in nearby counties, which is terrible, too. They are polluting the air and water for everybody in the state and the current gov (who got voted out) didn't even charge them extraction fees.
No new pics today because we're revisiting the parks momentarily. I did post the Pirate parrot and the Penguin penguin, though. As I said yesterday Pittsburgh has some rabid sports fans, and there is sports memorabilia for sale in a lot of places in the city. But Pittsburghers also love to participate in sporting events. There are baseball and softball areas in all the parks, as well as tennis courts, some soccer fields, basketball courts, even places to play tetherball. Frick even has a bowling green and leagues that play there all summer long. As well as the ball parklets in the parks, there is an ice skating rink at Schenley Park, and swimming pools at both Schenley and Highland Parks. If a person isn't so sports minded, there are family picnic pavilios, many of the parks offer community gardens, Frick has a nature center with programs, and of course there is the zoo and aquarium at Highland Park. We'll talk more of that tomorrow.
I hope you are having a good day, and maybe even thinking of visiting our city at some point. Mom loves to take folks around. Hugs, Peppino

  Hi Sammy
I hope everyone is remembering to vote for Peppino every day. Silent votes are appreciated as much as the ones with a blog.
The KB is still a happening place! In addition to the ski slopes and the ice skating pond, don't forget the daily movies, and the food tent. Ms. BB set up a great BBQ in there! Bring things to grill, if you want.
Today's movies will be It's a Wonderful Life, and Frosty the Snowman. We will show Rudolph the Red nosed Reindeer if there is time.
Yesterday mom's tours were small, but fun. The first one was with a family of 4 and another family of 3. They were fascinated with the dinosaurs. The second one was an adult man with his mother and they were interested and engaged. Mom's biggest problem in there is that she talks too much.
Mom said that what she buys at PetSmart stays upstairs until Christmas. I guess Santa will be filling our stockings with some of it. I don't know why she can't just give us stuff, though!

Wow, that's a well traveled duck! He made quite a splash here, too, heehee.
Thanks for your vote, I appreciate each one.
Today we can visit the sports arenas of the city. Pittsburgh has 3 teams, the Pirates (whose mascot is a parrot), the Penguins (whose mascot is a penguin, of course), and the Steelers (whose mascot is creepy!). So, I'm showing 2 pics of the North Shore, where the Pirates play baseball in PNC Park and the Steelers play at Heinz Field. Pitt also plays football at Heinz Field. The hockey arena is my third pic, that's the new Consol Energy Center. Other events are held there as well, the circus, ice shows, the occasional basketball game, concerts, etc. Pittsburgh boasts some rabid sports fans, and there are lots of places in town where a person can buy Pirate, Penguin, or Steeler gear and other memorabilia.
I hope you are having a happy day and whatever team you root for in football wins today. Hugs, Peppino

I hope you are having a wonderful day! Lots of cleaning and some cooking going on here. Kind of boring really but I have a new toy in the play cage to keep me occupied.
Mom put the Trans Siberian Orchestra CD on for us to listen to. She just love the Christmas Canon. She love the Canon and this version of it is very beautiful! I'm enjoying it. The new computer does not have the same music program as the old one so mom has not figured out how to get more music on her MP3 player! Ian gave mom his old IPod since he got a smart phone and it does everything the Ipod does. Now mom has to figure out how to use it! She can turn it on and off! So far that's about it!Hahahahahaha It's rather embarrassing to have a mom who is so clueless when it comes to technology!

  Hi Sammy
Thanks so much for your support and votes.
Today we are going downtown to see another green space in the city. It's Point State Park, and it's located at the confluence of the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers, right at the mouth of the Ohio River. It's a small park, but it contains Fort Pitt, after which Pittsburgh is named. There is a neat fountain right at the point which can shoot high into the air, or be a nice calm little fountain, depending on the weather and time of day. In my 5th pic, the fountain looks pink, doesn't it? That's because it is! They make it pink for October, breast cancer awareness month. The first pic is the giant rubber ducky who visited here last summer. Since we are all birds, I thought you'd enjoy seeing it, even though it isn't part of the park. It stayed on the river until late in the summer, then left for parts unknown, or at least unknown to mom, heehee. At Point State Park, they do summer concerts and lots of other fun activities throughout the year. It's also the headquarters for the Pittsburgh Arts Festival in June, and the 3 Rivers Regatta around the 4th of July.
I hope you are enjoying the green parts of our city as much as we do. Have a wonderful day! Hugs, Peppino

Falco has another very short marathon today. The movies at the KB will be the Miracle on 34th Street ones, both the old and the new one. We can't decide which we like better, they are both so good. If time remains, we will squeeze in another showing of ELF, too.
Today mom is working at the museum doing 2 public tours of Dinosaur Hall. The nice thing is the trees are up, so she will get some new shots for Peppino's blogs when he talks about the museum. Public tours are so much fun. Also, employees of the museums get a 25% discount for a couple of weeks, so maybe she can find some things there if she has time, and not have to go out shopping again. She will stop at PetSmart before she comes home, though.
Hope you are having a nice day, helping with decorations, maybe making a few birdie snowflakes to hang. Hugs, Willie
