  Hi Sam
Hi everybirdie, Zeena here with Monday's BOTM POST. Today we visit a beautiful song bird making a new comeback in homes around the globe. The Pekin Rokin, a song bird of extraordinary talent. I wish to thank all my many friends for their votes and stopping to leave comments on my page. I read them all.
The Red-billed Leiothrix or PEKIN ROBIN (Leiothrix lutea) is usually found in India, Bhutan, Nepal, Burma and parts of Tibet. This species is a bird of the hill forests, found in every type of jungle though it prefers pine forests with bushes. It has also been found at elevations ranging from near sea level to about 7,500 feet.

The species was introduced to the Hawaiian Islands in 1918 and spread to all the forested islands except Lanai. Its population on Oahu crashed in the 1960s and it disappeared from Kauai, but is now common and increasing on Oahu The leiothrix was released in Western Australia but it failed to become established. This species was also introduced in Great Britain but permanent establishment was unsuccessful. It was introduced to France, where it is now established in several areas.
Adults have bright red bills and a dull yellow ring around their eyes. Their backs are dull olive green, and they have a bright yellow-orange throat with a yellow chin; females are somewhat duller than males, and juveniles have black bills. It has also been introduced in various parts of the world, with small populations of escapees having existed in Japan since the 1980s. It has become a common cagebird and amongst aviculturists it goes by various names: Pekin Robin, Pekin Nightingale, Japanese Nightingale, and Japanese (Hill) Robin, the last two being misnomers as it is not native to Japan.
Pekin Robins don't fly frequently, except in open habitats. This bird is very active and an excellent singer but very secretive and difficult to see. It makes a wonderful addition to a mixed aviary with good cover provided. Housing one pair per flight.
The standard fare for Pekin Robins in captivity comprises a mix of dried insect food, fresh fruits and mealworms. they especially like fruitflies and live crickets especially in the breeding season.
Pekin Robins are difficult to find for sale but well worth the expenditure and effort to find them.

  Hi Sammy
We all love that pic of you and Miranda surfing, too!
Today is a rainy day and rather cool. I don't think it will hit 70 today. Mom cleaned and fed 13 skunks today, but her record of not getting sprayed still holds, knock on wood! She also took care of those little hawks who are quite grown now, and in the flight cage. (The flight cage is a pre release area for raptors, the center staff makes sure they can hunt, land, preen, do all the birdie things they'll need back home in the wild.) As well as all those, mom also cleaned and watered 3 more juvenile red tailed hawks and 5 screech owls. She also did some dishes and laundry while she was there today. Both of those areas tend to back up quickly if someone doesn't pitch in and help.
After the center, mom went shopping, but now she's home with us, with only one load of laundry to do, so she's basically ours for the day.
I hope you are having a pleasant day filled with sunshine and love. Hugs, Willie

  Hi SamIAm
Thanks for the tip! Mom now knows that John Legend co-wrote that song she loves. Now she just wishes she knew if he was involved in the lyrics and the melody or just one or the other. Geesh! She is never satisfied!

The milonga sure was a lot of fun, although I still say the ladies in bikinis (you know who you are!!) took serious advantage of distracting us poor guys in the volleyball game. Still not sure who won, and I don't really care. What fun! You and the Scruffy Birds sounded greyt as usual, Ms BB and her liquid refreshments were delicious and Lizzie's buffet....well, let's just say nobirdy went home hungry.

If you come to my page and look at the first two pics in my gallery you will see Gloria the car in all her gleaming glory (why do you think Mom named her Gloria). That's right; the new USB cable arrived yesterday and the pics are finally downloaded on my page. I don't mind sharing space with her at all, as long as she doesn't drive me to the groomers. We are going to have a long chat very soon.

Had a nice sunbath this morning, and we didn't get out till 9:30!! There were actually a few clouds out, so the weather was very slightly cooler. Just in the upper 80s today, which is an improvement. It still doesn't cool off much at night, and Mom has to leave the fan going in my room with my cover open about 6". Which means I wake up as soon as the sun comes up. Mom usually gets up around then anyway, but now I make sure she does!

Oh, and today I like peaches! Mom bought a couple more when she and Dad went to the grocery store yesterday, since they had some more locally grown ones. This time I decided they were good, which is fortunate since Mom said the grapes were so awful she didn't get me any.

  Hi Sam
Hello everyone, Zeena here with today's BOTM POST. Today we head to the warm tropical Island Luzon, Philippines and visit an unusual and exotic species of Dove. The Luzon Bleeding-Heart. The Luzon Bleeding-heart (Gallicolumba luzonica) is one of a number of species of ground dove in the genus Gallicolumba that are called "bleeding-hearts". They get this name from a splash of vivid red colour at the centre of their white breasts. The Luzon Bleeding-heart is the species in which this feature is most pronounced, and on first sight it is hard to believe that the bird has not recently been wounded. A reddish hue that extends down the belly furthers the illusion of blood having run down the bird's front. The Luzon Bleeding-heart was featured on a Philippine 2-peso postage stamp in 1994.

The Luzon bleeding-heart is classified as Near Threatened (NT) on the IUCN Red List and is listed on Appendix II of CITES., since it is commonly trapped. Local people use it for meat, but its striking appearance means that there is also a market for it in the pet trade. A captive breeding project has been started in Australia, and the Philippines. Habitat conservation is a priority but it will also be necessary to bring some of the three other species of bleeding heart doves (Negros, Sulu and Mindoro) into captivity, to prevent their extinction. Recently the first captive population of Negros bleeding heart doves has been established in the Philippines.

Only two of the five species of bleeding heart doves are held in captivity in Europe at present: the Luzon and the Mindanao. The European breeding programs for these species are coordinated by Bristol Zoo Gardens. They are being managed to provide a self-sustaining captive population and to develop important care and breeding techniques for use in the Philippines.

Identifying the areas where Luzon bleeding heart doves are found and the numbers that are left is the next step needed to secure this species in the wild. Once sites have been selected with the local community, the area will be protected to ensure the survival of the species in that area.

The areas where the bleeding heart dove lives also contain many other birds unique to these islands, all of which have been threatened by deforestation. In addition, some are threatened by hunting and illegal collection for the pet trade. By highlighting the plight of the bleeding heart dove, conservationists work to save the habitat for all the species in the area.

Although extremely rare in Aviculture 2 pairs were found for sale at $5000.US per pair.

Limon had a really good time and got to meet his hero Taz, they like each other as good buddies already! This should be a peaceful Sunday for us, dad has to finish assembling Limon's new cage, it should work really good for him! We are going to try to get Limon's BC page put up as soon as time allows, he is truly a remarkable TooMan!   Hi Sammy
It was another fun milonga last night. It was great to see everybirdie there! Mom signed off because of all the thunder and lightning, but we all stayed til the fireworks were done, then went home in Ipo's shuttle. Thanks to Kiddo, Taz, Lizzie, and Sam for another great party!
Mom spent yesterday afternoon at the pool, it turned out to be a gorgeous day. Last night the thunderstorms rolled in right around time for the milonga and continued til about 2AM. Mom was kept awake by Daisy, who is scared of the noise. She was wearing her thundershirt, but she was still pacing and whining a bit. Today it's gray, cloudy, and looks like it will rain again. It might be a shopping day or just a stay at home and clean the porch day. I hope you are having a fun day of sunshine and summer weather, and that you can get out to play awhile. Hugs, Willie

  Hi Sam
Hello my dear BC friends. It was a long day without our beloved BC family but we are happy to say once it was up and going it was actually much faster then before. I had a special request from one of my friends to example the breeding of mutations. As this is a limited BOTM series I will touch on it briefly. For anyone interested in more in depth study I have a number of very good links and references.
In simplest terms a "mutation" is any deviation from the "normal wild-type" of any species of animal or bird. They occur spontaneously in the wild, as well as in captivity. In the wild MOST mutations have a very limited life-span owing to their coloration or other physical characteristics that make them more visible and easier prey. An example of a successful mutations are the red markings on normal Congo African Greys. These individuals integrate well into existing grey colored flocks.
In Captivity mutations are able to live and mature thereby offering breeders an opportunity to reproduce like marked/colored offspring. An excellent example is the Blue Budgie. These spontaneously occurred in several continents. By breeding Blue offspring back to normal parents the breeders were able to produce more of the same. Through selective culling and breeding of F2-second generation-blues the color was stabilized. Mutations can continue to occur even in a new mutation color--such as the blue Budgies who then produced offspring with yellow-Lutino or albino pigments. Inbreeding, selective crossing and out crosses to other colored mutations has given rise to all the many colors common in Budgies.
When looking specifically at Quaker Parrots, whose natural color is green/grey we find that the first mutation was a Blue baby hatched in Belgium in the 1940s. It is a complete replacement of the normal green plumage by blue. The gene for blue plumage is Autosomal Recessive and both hens and cocks can be heterozygous or ‘split’ for or‘carriers’ of blue – depending upon your favored terminology! This means--both parents must carry the gene to produce blue even though they are visually "normals" Today there are a large number of mutations being bred.
With all mutations, breeders must cull out the colors they do not want and breed the desired colors into the gene pool. Through consecutive generations of offspring the color is improved upon, often mutating from the original mutation thereby adding yet another new color for serious breeders to work with. Mutation possibilities are limitless as they occur spontaneously and can not be "created" by humans. Hybrids must not be confused with mutations. Hybrids are the result of breeding two diverse species within the same Genera together--examples of which are the Hybrid Macaws, Blue/Gold mated to a Green Wing etc.
Today we will visit a selection of mutations from a number of different species, I hope you enjoy the results.

Just a quick fly by to remind everybirdy that tonight is the July Fun in the Sun milonga. It is a lakeside beach party, and I sure hope everybirdy will be there. It will be a simple one, since the County Fair is in August and that one takes a lot of time to get ready, but it will still be a lot of fun.

Now I never got by to make sure that you and the Scruffy Boids can make it tonight. I sure hope you do. And my mom has a question. How do you always know who wrote the songs the band performs? (She wants to know is John Legend wrote All of Me).

Hey Mr Sam, more love from LaLo
I hope to see you, the band, and many of our friends at the Milonga Beach Party tonight, it should be a lot of fun for all who attend! We're having a hot, muggy, overcast day, but these days come and go, no complaints with our Summer so far! Dad had great time with his old friends yesterday, they talked for hours, what could they possibly have to talk about! This should be an easy day for dad, not much happening, I hope your Saturday is equally laid back and peaceful, and let's all be aware that sadly, bird injuries can happen to any of us, in that magical split second, a constant vigil must ALWAYS be in place! Have a great day and give my love to all in your happy home, see ya tomorrow...

It's supposed to rain and thunder today, but the sun is shining brightly so far. Mom has plans either way: If it is sunny, naturally it will be pool time; if it's raining, there is a street sale going on in Oakmont, which is close by, and also she got coupons for Penney's. Either way, she'll be back in plenty of time for us to attend the milonga. Hope to see you there, too. Hugs, Willie

Falco really liked her hatchday yesterday. She got a lot of new stuff!
Today mom cleaned in the RVS room, but didn't get it all done. She cleaned the fisher's big cage which takes up half the room, the bat's enclosure, the groundhog, and 8 of the raccoons, but had to leave 4 cages undone. Steph said they'd take care of them, though. It was a perfect pool day, too, so now mom is home to blog, and apparently in time to find BC up and running!   Hi Sam
July 25th BOTM POST
Hello friends, Zeena the Ballerina here today with a popular, very pretty Australian species. The Bourke's Parakeet and it's mutations . These peaceful, gentle birds make awesome pets for people of all ages and have quite the following here in aviculture. With their calm personalities and soft voices they make awesome additions to any home whether it be an apartment or private dwelling.
I want to again thank each one of you for your wonderful comments and daily votes. If there is a species you would like to possibly see in one of my Posts feel free to mention them.
The Bourke's Parakeets (Neopsephotus Bourkii) are endangered in their own homeland of Southwestern and Central Australia, but are popular in aviculture. They are readily available in the United States and relatively inexpensive. Know the world over for their charming qualities.

The Bourke's parrot has recently been removed from the Neophema genus and placed in a genus of its own. Neopsephotus bourkii. Although discussion continues in this matter. The Bourkes Parakeet is listed on Appendix II of the CITES, as to be monitored and vulnerable. Our hopes is that it will never need to be moved to Appendix I.

They are the only parrot or parakeet that has no green pigmentation in its natural colour. The ‘normal parakeet’ found in its natural habitat is brown on its back area from head to tail with a pink underbelly. Wing feathers can be scalloped with a creamy white to sometimes a pale yellow. They also sport a royal blue on their shoulders, outside flight feathers and tail. A streak of the same blue crosses the top of their eyes. The male will have blue feathers just above his cere. One of the most popular mutations of Bourke’s is better know as a Rosey Bourke’s that is dark to light pink in colour. Today there are a wide selection of mutations available.

I trust you will enjoy the photos I have posted today in the gallery. These are not by-far all the available mutations being bred but gives a wonderful sampling of what is hatching in the world of Bourke's Parakeets.

Mom will phone your mom later today. Last evening it was too late to call, since it was after dinner. There was only one machine working at the imaging center so there were a lot of women sitting around in those silly robes just waiting their turn.
Mom loved the story about the rabbit and the juncos. It's so cool to have wildlife share the bounty so to speak. Although she has not planted veggies this year because for the last couple of years the raccoons and ground hogs have managed to eat or damage everything.
It's cooler here today than it has been for a couple of days, only going into the mid 70s today. That's good pool weather though. Mom will spend the afternoon reading by the pool, then do some grocery shopping which is really needed at this point. (She only had 7 things to cut up into the our bowls today.) Later we will celebrate Falco's hatchday with songs, special treats, and maybe a new toy. She's hoping to get her favorite popcorn nutriberries. ♫Happy Hatchday to Falco! ♫ Come on over for some cake and nutriberries later! We can all watch as Falco opens her gifts. Hugs, Willie

Cockatoos have been cross species bred for a number of years, giving rise to some odd and uncommon looking individuals. However, the birds we will stop to visit today are natural occurring mutations, some of which have been hatched in the wild. Ok, guys, climb down from there please, it's time to get a few photos.
Cockatoos are found in the wild in only a limited area of the world. They are found primarily in Australia, New Guinea, Indonesia, as well as surrounding areas in the South Pacific.

The cockatoo (of the family Cacatuidae) is one of the most well-known birds in the parrot family because it’s quite noisy; in fact, it’s the loudest of all the parrots. Their loudness comes from a history of having to communicate long distances with one another in dark, thick forests. Cockatoos are found in Australia and some surrounding islands, mainly in forested areas. These birds form flocks, with sometimes up to three different types of cockatoos, to feed together on berries, nuts and seeds. Most cockatoos even stay in the same flock they were raised in and often mate in long-lasting pairs.

Like all parrots, cockatoos are zygodactyl, which means they can use their feet to grasp objects, making them excellent climbers. Although parrots are often colorful, most cockatoos are actually black and white because they lack a certain texture in their feathers that reflects light. In the 1970s, many cockatoos were trapped for the pet trade and their numbers in the wild have decreased dramatically. In fact, some Indonesian cockatoos are now thought to be extinct in the wild. Others are quickly declining due to hunting, poisoning and illegal poaching. Looked upon as pests and nuisances they fight to maintain their territories with ever growing human invasion.

Cockatoos are gregarious, sensitive, demanding and classed as high-maintenance. They have a powerful beak they freely use to chew and tear woodwork and furnishing in homes if left unsupervised. Not a bird for most novices, those who have loved and been loved by one, will forever be a Cockatoo fan.

I hope you enjoy the photos of some of the wonderful mutations available today.

  Hi Sammy
Mom made a recommendation to readers in the BC Library (Cookie's page), if anyone likes thrillers/mysteries.
Dinner last night was good, the groupon was for a local Japanese restaurant, but not traditional Japanese, one of those places that puts on a show of cooking on the hibachi. It's called Saga, and the chef came out and cooked in front of mom and her sis. They shared a sushi roll for appetizers, and her sister had a tempura banana for dessert. Mom was much too stuffed to have any dessert, though. Plus, a fried banana didn't sound appealing.
Mom has her mammogram and bone density appointment today. There is a women's imaging center that does both at the same site, so that's where she'll go. They are predicting rain today, but if the walk with the dogs this morning is any indication, it will be another bright sunny day, so pool time again!
I hope you are having a bright sunshiney day with lots of hugs. Hugs from me too, Willie

  Heya, Sam!
Woo...we were toasty today! It got to 88 degrees, but the humidity was super high, so it felt warmer. The nice part was that it was kinda windy where Mom works, so that helped cut the heat from feeling as warm as it was. Mom did get a walk in though after lunch--she said there were not many sailboats out on the lake today. Guess people are working or something. It was a good day though, and the time pretty much flew by. I don't know anything about time flying, do you? I don't see it. Do you?

Hoppy Tooooosday!

  Hi Sam
I must say that I agree with what your concern is in the breeding of color mutations. The rarer the color the more it is necessary to carry out a certain percentage of in-breeding to "lock" the genes in to allow for truer breeding results.
My Momma Deb was one of the first in Ontario many years ago to breed Pineapple mutations--today they are plentiful and very inexpensive.
I think that over-emphasis on coloring will weaken the health and longevity of the species. When one breeds for any one or two specific qualities in an animal or bird something has to go--often it involves health. Weakened joints, hearts and immune systems being the primary targeted areas.

  Hi Sam
Hello my dear friends. Thank you all for the lovely words of encouragement and your faithful daily votes. i hope you are enjoying viewing a few very rare and uncommon Parrots and birds. All the birds I have discussed are species that are kept in captivity. Some we will not see, or won't see available for a long time due to their rarity.
Today we will stop by to visit some very common friends, in some very interesting and striking colors. Momma Deb has raised many Green Cheeked Conures in her lifetime but none like those we will see today. Many are only available to breeders at this time due to their difficulty in reproducing their colors. I hope you will enjoy what you see.
Momma Deb and I tried to locate the current price of many of these beauties and have listed them here, just for your information sake--

American Dilutes--$2000.00 US a pair and up
American Dilutes yellow-sided---$ 3800 to 6000Us a pair
Red-Faced Yellow-sided----$2500 to 7000.US a pair
Sun Cheek -------$ 4500 to 8500US a pair
Moon Cheeks---$7000Us and up for good stock
Mint-----$5000 to 10,000US a pair
Turquoise---$500 US a pair and up
Cinnamon Turquoise---$750 US and up a pair
Recessive Pied-----$4000 to 8000US a pair and up
Red-Factored Pineapples--$300US and up per pair
Dilute Moon Cheeks---$7000US and up per pair

There are by far not all the new and shocking color mutations available but will give you a good idea of what has been hatching in Green Cheeked Conure nest boxes lately.

Habitat:
Seen in dense, low forests and woodlands. Also in moist, mossy cloud forest on E Andes where seen up to 2900m (9512 ft).

Threat Summary:
Probably declining in E Bolivia because of rapid forest clearance. They are found on CITES
Appendix II. There are flocks living in both Florida and California which can be seen in company of the wild Amazon Parrots.

Hi my darling Fun Man Sam, from LaLo of Illinois
It will be very hot today with temps in the mid-nineties, and heat indexes well over 100! The high humidity is a killer for dad's old COPD lungs, we are going to keep him inside today! JL was mocking dad's morning cough, he was worried about her until he realized what she was doing, the little witch, I would kick her vent if I could, she is one bad ass! Have a happy ToosDay, and give my love to all in your pretty home, see ya all tomorrow...

Love from Jenny & our family

PS ~My love to our sweet aunt Robin, that lady rocks, my whole flock really loves her and although it is not possible, my dad would love to meet her, give her a big hug, and kiss her on the forehead, and sit across the table from her and just talk bird and life...

  Hi Sammy
That's a wonderful pic of you dancing with Queen CCP. HOpe Aunt Betty sees it. You really said that to mom? I think it a lot, but I've never said it. Mom must have been reading my mind this morning, though. She was outside watering the plants, and brought me all the flower tops from the basil! Not all for me, unfortunately. I had to share with Maxine and Peppino. Still, that is some good stuff, and I grabbed the longest one for myself.
I hope mom is feeling better today.
It is a gorgeous day today! I think it's the best one of the week. Tomorrow we're supposed to get thunderstorms again. Usually by this time in July the grass is brown and dry, but everyone has green grass still. Mom has some grocery shopping to do, but it can wait. She needs to buy fresh fruits and veggies, but we have enough to tide us over for a few days. Today is definitely a pool day, and tonight mom and her sister will go to a Japanese restaurant for dinner. Mom bought a groupon a few weeks ago and wants to use it before it expires. Tonight will also be cage cleaning night, so we all have to be prepared to fix up our homes as soon as mom is done destroying them.
I hope you are having a bright and beautiful sunny day and getting lots of attention that you deserve. Hugs, Willie

  Hi Sam
Hello everybirdie, Zeena here to start this week with one of the worlds most well known Parrots. Today we stop to visit the Senegal Parrots and their mutations. I wish to thank you all for your greyt support and daily votes in my quest to earn the Title of Bird of the Month for August.
Over the last 30 years as many as 3 million wild Senegal parrots have been removed from the wild – 811,408 CITES Export permits have been issued since 1975. Unregulated trade in African parrots peaked in the 1980s and ’90s, and still exists today. This lucrative black market industry is fueled by profiteering middlemen who exploit wild bird populations. In 2005, the Senegal parrot was the most traded bird on the CITES Appendix II, with an average of over 45,000 individuals being removed from the wild each year. Today, African parrots remain among the most traded species on earth.
The Poicephalus parrots, including Senegals, Red-bellied and Myers etc are among the hardiest parrots on earth being able to survive in the harsh, African subtropics. All of their ranges are under serious pressure from the booming charcoal industry, out-of-control commercial logging , burning by local people for pastures and agriculture, as well as climate change. Deforestation rates on the continent are now twice that of the rest of the world. Africa has lost one half of its old-growth forests and forest restoration has become absolutely essential to save endemic forest bird species.
Long-lived forest specialists like Senegal parrots and rose-ringed parakeets are particularly sensitive to forest degradation. The added pressure of the wild-caught bird trade is often catastrophic, resulting in local extinctions in many Africa countries. Meyer’s parrots have all but disappeared from South Africa, African grey parrots are no longer seen in Kenya or Tanzania, Ruppell’s parrot and the brown-headed parrot have disappeared from much of their ranges in Namibia and Mozambique respectively, and the Cape parrot is only found in small forest refuges in the high mountains. Anyone who has traveled by road in Africa will tell you that every time you are in or near a forest you will start seeing parrots in cages or with their feet tied up on the roadside. Africa is exporting its parrots, its wildlife, its birdlife, its natural heritage,at alarming rates.
The Senegal Parrot is now extinct in many of it's ranges. The only way to stop this trade in wild-caught Parrots is to refuse to purchase birds that are not born in captivity.
Many devoted Senegal breeders have been working with a few unique mutations that have appeared in nestboxes starting in the early 1990's. These rare and beautiful mutations are still expensive and normally available only to other breeders, they include the yellow, pied, opaline, dilute and cinnamon. Regardless of color Senegal Parrots will remain one of the most common family pet birds kept the world over.

The mate is a jerk! We already knew that, though. HOpe mom is feeling better today than she was yesterday. What's with Bob, he hasn't learned yet?
Just a quick note today to let you know we're thinking of you. Mom cleaned the skunks, foxes, groundhogs, and coyotes today, all outdoors, and very muggy, so she was happy to get to the pool. We need her tonight, though, so we're making her hurry up with our blogs. Hope you are having a wonderful summer day with lots of love coming your way. Hugs, Willie

  Heya, Sam!
Nothing brave about it--I love to go places with Mom! Car wash, Farmer's market---those are super places to go, cuz they involve the CAR, and that is my favorite thing. Of course I don't see a whole lot cuz I am in my carrier, but just being with Mom is the best ever!

Another wonderful day with Mom, though I am grumpy today cuz she did not get up until 8 AM! I was up and ready to go at 7 but that lazybones did not get out of bed until later. Now mind you, 8 AM is not super late, but she is normally up by 7 on Sunday. So I had to wait a whole hour for her! Sheesh. But we had a good day, and now she is getting things ready for her return to work tomorrow, and I am not happy about that at all. So I am velcroing myself to her shoulder. Get me to move? No way.

Hope you had a wonderful Sunday!

Hi Sam, I AM I am
Hi everyone, Zeena, here with your Sunday BOTM POST. I want to take a moment to thank you all for all your support and votes during this month's BOTM campaign. Today, we will visit with some unique and usual Budgie mutations. Known by many names, Parakeet, Budgie, and officially Budgerigars. these fun-loving, friendly members of the avian family are loved the world over.

Feather Dusters
Feather Dusters are a rare mutation produced solely at random, mostly among English Budgies. These birds are huge compared to other budgies and have abnormally growing, very long feathers. As the name implies they do look rather like the feather dusters used for dusting furniture. They must eat constantly to try and supply their bodies with the nutrients they need because of the heavy demand put on them by the constant feather growth. They generally don't live more than a few months, cannot fly, and are usually blind. They are also thought to be deaf and may even be afflicted with what is known in humans as Down's Syndrome.

Half Siders

Half-Siders a randomly occurring rare mutation in which the bird is split right down the middle with each half representing a different color or variety. One side may be blue and one half green, one half normal and the other half pied, etc. When one of these is at a show, you can tell exactly where it is in the room because of all of the people standing in front of the cage doing double takes. As they say, you have to see it to believe it. Quarter-Siders, in which only one quarter of the body is affected, also occur.

CRESTED

In this variety, the feathers on top of the budgie's head point awry, forming a crest.
There are three types of crested budgies: full-circular crest, half-circular crest and the tufted crest.
Crested Budgies are both a random occurring mutation, and one for which breeders can breed to produce them. They are relatively rare and sell for upwards of $100US each and more depending on crest.
Helicopter Budgies

These unusual Budgies are bred to produce long, silkie feathers at the shoulder and upper wing margins. The more complete the covering the higher the quality and price. They are especially popular in Japan and Asia where pairs can sell for up to $55,000US
