We've had more rain, so much that the lakes that had formed in the fields and then gone away came back which was sort of makin' me wonder if maybe I didn't need a canoe or a kayak after all. Today's a really windy day so I suppose lots of water will magically disappear. That'll be good. I don't wanna have to rent some webbed feet so I can get around in the backyard!

Thanks for checkin' on me and Reba and findin' out if we needed a boat or a canoe to keep ourselves afloat. I sure wouldn't survive long if I had t'swim; I'm not a good swimmer, or at least I'm assuming I'm not. I've never tried! And don't want to either.
So you'd bet all your peanuts on me? Wow, dude, I'm touched! Actually I'm not a jockey in the upcoming Milonga Derby. Happy Easter Trillian!
And tell BJ and Kia and your mom the same too, please. Did ya have a nice Easter Weekend? Did you get any sort of special treats? I didn't. Not a single one. One year I got a little jelly bean but apparently that was supposed to last me the rest of my life because I've never seen one since. Bummer.
I'm sorry it's still cold there. It's actually been much better here the last week with temps in the 40s and 50s. The grass has a hint of green to it already so I'll be seein' the mower go by here before long. Let the Grass Wars begin!! My days of hangin' out on the wheelbarrow are probably over because we've got this darn hawk that hangs out in the neighborhood now. Last summer he buzzed the aviary within feet. Mom happened to be standing inside with us and couldn't believe how nervy that predator bird was.

Hey Trill!
The pirating picture was for the conclusion of the adventures of the Pearl. I'd never signed on to that before but decided this was the year. Sure glad I did; it was a riot! Couldn't believe it that Captain Ceasaur hired me as a helmsmate though 'cause I'd never steered a ship in my entire life! Talk about a trusting captain! We didn't run aground or get lost so I guess I did okay. My mom says thanks for the compliment on the picture.
The one I've got now on my page is not photoshopped at all. All that stuff was set up in the aviary on a bright sunny day a couple of summers ago. I was wet from having had a squirt bottle shower which was the perfect look for a beach picture. Oh, t'be outside again one of these days. It's gonna feel SOOOO good!

What's up? Here, not much, but that's okay. The same ol' boring stuff is way better than having my mom long gone or somethin' like that. You buried in snow there? Haven't got any here but maybe that's cause you've got it all there!
What were you doing the other day that was being a pain? Were you gettin' into mom's shoes and chewin' up the laces? I haven't managed to get myself in much of any trouble lately. I slipped out of my room the other day but didn't do anything or go very far from the door, most because mom's dog was layin' there and I wasn't about t'walk by too close. Heather sometimes barks at me to tell me to keep the beak back and that bark always ends up alertin' mom to what I'm up to. That dog is such a tattletale!

So there's lots a'white stuff on the ground? Man, I can't even imagine what that must look like. Around here we're lucky if it's a couple of inches at a time. We usually get ridiculous wind whenever it does happen t'snow which means that it just piles up in some places, leaving other areas bare. Not very pretty. Is spring coming? It better be!

Once more it is SKY here with a story about one amazing Cockatoo. The original store is on hold, as the Veterinarian I was to interview was unable to speak with me as of press time. In it's place we will visit Vienna, Austria and a talented Goffin Cockatoo who is making science headlines.
Figaro is a captive born male Cockatoo who has drawn the research world of cognitive biologists to a new area of discovery. Goffin Cockatoos by nature are a highly playful, curious Indonesian parrots. Figaro however has broken new ground when it was observed that he was able to make and use wooden tools in order to get food. Researchers from both the University of Oxford, and the University of Vienna are studying this advanced usage of cognitive and intellectual abilities.
It began when Figaro was seen playing with a small pebble in his outdoor flight. At some point he poked the pebble through the cage mesh and it fell beyond his reach by beak or claws. After several failed attempts to retrieve his pebble he was seen to search for a small stick and after chewing to the correct size, he used it to roll the tiny pebble within easy access.
To test this observation, researchers put nuts in the exact same spot the pebble had fallen. Figaro saw the nut, flew to a large cage beam, chewed a long piece off and using his beak fashioned it into a spoon shape which he used to pick up and bring the nut within his reach. Testing at different locations, using various objects and food proved to bring the same results.
As a result researches have concluded that any species of parrot can adapt to factors in its environment to allow it to obtain food. How Figaro discovered how to make and use tools is unclear but it has opened the roads to even greater understanding of the intellectual levels of all species of birds.
I'm pretty sure us birds already knew all this, it just took researchers longer to figure out how smart we really are!

Hello Sky here. I must say I made a big "OOPS!" when I said today we would finish looking at the Gabriel Foundation. Tomorrow, Nov 15th we will continue with the GF. Today, we are turning our attention to another " SPOTLIGHT ON CARING" This week we are visiting with our very own DIXIE & KALLIE, and their Mom Rose and Grandma Carmela. This amazing flockily travel to various public gatherings where they educate, and entertain their audiences in the care of all birds.
SKY: Dixie, as flock spokes bird, I would like to ask you, when and how you first became involved in training and educating the public?
DIXIE; About 13 years ago we were watching a video by renowned trainer Tanni Robar as she showed her parrots doing various tricks, such as fetching, playing basket ball, and bowling. One of the birds was a Green Cheek Conure, just like me. Mom Rose thought that if those birds in the video could do it, so could we.
Mom and Grandma Carmela began training four of their Conures and held private shows for family and friends. Everyone thought they should take the "act" to visit school children, nursing homes, when they did everyone was amazed. They kept asking them to return.
SKY; How did these shows turn into an educational opportunity?
DIXIE; As Mom and Grandma perfected their shows, Gramda Carmela would speak about where each species came from, what they ate, their care and feeding, and what to expect when owning a parrot.
SKY; Tell us some of the places you have performed at?
DIXIE; The birds have performed for the STATE HOUSE in Rhode Island, Elementary, middle schools, and in Senior Centers. We have also performed at Garden and Bird clubs, birthday parties, Resturants, Churches, just to name a few.
SKY; What one message do you want the audiences to hear?
DIXIE; How special we birds are, that we are created by God to enjoy, that we have feelings and love to give for a long, long time. We tell everyone that comes to see us perform that we will be around for a long time, and we try to teach children and adults the proper care of a feathered friend. We let them know some of us birds are like 5 year old and need trust and love in their lives.
SKY; Do you speak about abused birds at your performances?
DIXIE, yes. we talk about Brenna and Beau. When they were both alive they went to the shows too to show people what abuse does to a bird. We emphasize that birds are not impulse buys, something you play with, then when you get tired of it, you push it aside and forget it. Having a parrot is like having a child who never grows up.
SKY; What important point do you want to get across to the audience?
DIXIE; If you have a bird, love it like it's your child!
Sky; thank you Dixie, I am sure your words will encourage others to speak out on proper bird care.

It's really good t'know you didn't lose power in that SANDY storm. It's humbling to think that so many folks are still without power. I can't imagine one whole day without the lights and heater runnin'. What must it be like to go this long without that wonderful convenience. Ugh. I wonder if you've got SNOW t'day.
You'll never, never guess what's at my house right now. A Sulfur-crested Cockatoo!! It's not like you, but it's a 'Too! And the pathetic thing about this one is that he really likes my mom. Oh joy — I've got more competition. The story is that Uncle Chuck took in this guy when someone at the vet's office where he was taking Christy when she was so sick needed to rehome their bird. They told him Flash is a lady's bird and sure enough, he gets excited whenever he sees a human of the female-persuasion. While Uncle Chuck is working to convert him to like everyone, mom offered to let Flash come down here for a week or so and hang out with her. It's gonna be the longest week of my life, I'm pretty sure. I'll keep ya posted if ya'd like.
In the meantime, you have yourself a warm and toasty Thursday and good luck findin' a shoelace you can chew on.

How's things at your place? Managed to find any shoelaces lately? Mom's sandal-wearing days are coming to and end so I'm thinking that shoelaces will be back in fashion here before too long. I like to pull on those things and then wait for mom to lean down to tie them again. That's when I put my beak up for a kiss! Smooth move, huh?

My mom says it was really neat to hear you so much in the background of yesterday's phone call. She loves the way you say "La la la!" I need to learn that one.
So, after that noisy sucking machine gobbled up all the mess on the floor (that some parrot probably put there, right?), did you mess it up real quick like before the machine was even put away? !! That happens here all the time. Mom will get half my bird room swept, have the cages slide back into place and start sweeping on the other side and the first side's already got shredding paper, sunflower seed hulls and well, ya know, bird deposits on the floor already. Mom says it's a hopeless battle!

Hey Trill!
Guess what! It's cooled off here FINALLY. In fact, it was so cool t'day, I didn't go outside. Weird for the month of August, I'm tellin' you. It actually rained here t'day too. There's been rain in the area but somehow it's managed to either go around my little stretch of the world or completely evaporate before it got here. It was nice t'hear the rain falling, but I could've done without all the thunder and lightening. Scary stuff! It was so loud, Reba dove into my cage. I guess she though I could keep her safe. Ha! I was hoping she'd keep ME safe!

Yeah, ain't it a bummer about Bird Talk magazine havin' to stop their publishing. I'm gonna miss seein' those pretty birds on the cover while mom hides behind the paper reading.
