My first love (Pecky, my cockatiel) had just passed away & I was devastated. I had been volunteering at the Bird Rescue where I had recently adopted Tidbit. I went into a specialty bird store (just to look). I saw Piper and her hatchmate. They were both all over me & I loved them. I knew I could only take one and I thought I should probably take the male (since I had a male at home & am not breeding them). The salesperson at the store told me Piper was the male of the two....he was wrong! Oh, well..

Hi! My name is Piper

I am a Cockatiel from The Villages, FL.

Pippie, "The Princess"

6 years old   F

Cockatiel

Millet, yogurt, anything she'd like to taste off my dinner plate.

On top of my head (unfavorably), on my hand ripping off my cuticles, asleep on my shoulder, anywhere there is a nice millet spray.

Doesn't like to be cuddled too tightly... gives little squeels of discontent.

My owner spends lots of time each of her babies including me. There are 12 of us all together now! She gives me skritches on the head and treats. She makes each one of us feel special.

Very stubborn and spoiled, will think nothing of flying into your (hair, food, across the room to see you) if that's what she desires. Loves to rip cuticles and other pieces of skin off people (preening them)..

I'm the princess, I'm the baby girl :).

  Hi, Piper,
It's always nice to hear from you. Glad to hear you finally got a bit of cooler weather. We have had a fairly mild summer, only a few hottish days, and in our area never reached the triple digits.

We don't get to perch on heads. Pearl will land there (since it's the highest part of the parronts), but they will reach up and we step to the hand. Dad lets us on his shoulders, Mom doesn't as she's wary of Silver eyeing her earrings. Both of us love popcorn too.

Well, guess you have a fairly full house of 'tiels there. Don't need any babies! But birds do what birds do if the parronts aren't watching, heehee.

Have a great day, wing hugs, beak kisses and a vote, Pearl and Silver. (Hi to the entire flock.)

  Hi, Piper,
Just have to admire the volunteers who are able to help rehab wild creatures to return to the wild where they belong. Especially when they are often in need of help from the actions of careless humans.

Anything new with you or the flock? Other than over grooming your Mom's hand that is, heehee. Our Dad gets a bit sensitive when Pearl tries to groom his hair (the lil bit that he has left) by pulling at it! Hmmm, Pearl never tries to groom his beard though. Mom's hair is too long to try to groom, darn it.

Have a great day, wing hugs and a vote, Pearl and Silver.

  Hi Piper
It's a great day to meet Fluffy, our barred owl. Fluffy has been with the center since 2004, when he was turned in with a head injury. On examination, our director realized that he had lost his right eye. The center would normally release a one-eyed owl, since they hunt as much with their ears as with their eyes, but on further testing for visual acuity, he was found to be nearly blind in his remaining eye. That's how Fluffy became an education owl. In PA, barred owls and barn owls are the only 2 with brown eyes. The barred owl's hoot is the longest call in the owl family, consisting of 9 or more hoots in a row. They live in deep woods, usually, and are nocturnal. Thanks for coming by again today, here's a hug and vote for you. Willie

Come visit me, Gizmo, I miss you, sweet boy, Willie, Season's Greetings, Everybirdie!, PEPPINO, please vote me BOTM for the new year, Divo & Falco, Merry Christmas!.

Saw you had flown by Willie's page. Thought we'd stop in and give you a vote. If you haven't already go back and read all Willie's blogs about the center and the wonderful work they do there. He posts it on his page before he c/p's it to other birds. We have wildlife rescue places here too, but not close to us.

  Hi Piper
It's nice to meet you. HOpe we can stay in touch after this hectic month, I think my mom would have a lot to talk about with yours.
Hi everyone! The pic today is of Martha, the resident great horned owl. She is a bird who came to us a few years ago with a wing injury that was a couple of weeks old, well on its way to being completely healed. In a mammal it's possible to rebreak an injured bone and set it properly, but in birds, with the hollow strutted bones they have, it's too big a risk to try to break and reset it, so Martha's wing was allowed to heal in that lowered position. She is not in pain, and has been a great asset to the center.Martha has been on many education programs and to lots of information tables in her time, but perhaps the most important job she does for the center is to raise great horned owl babies. In her time with the center, she's fostered babies nearly every summer, taking time off her rounds to be a stay at home mom for us. One summer she had 3 owlets from different nests and of different ages which she successfully raised to be released. This summer, she has one baby that is nearly fully feathered now, and almost ready to go. When mom took her trainee in to clean the cage today, the baby flew at them! He was trying to protect his 'mom' from them. He will go into the big flight cage soon, to make sure he can hunt successfully before he gets released. She's done a great job again this summer! Here's a hug and vote today, Willie

  Hi, Piper,
Sorry to hear that you still have very hot weather. It seems that any place that got rain after hot temps just ended up being humid afterwards, so we guess it might've helped the plants some. Yes, it's very pleasant here as long as you are not in the direct sun too long (bad for you anyway...)

We understand about the paint fumes. The parronts had the bathroom redone and part of the kitchen so there was paint and glue smells. Since it was springtime we just had the fans and the windows open and of course we were in a totally different room.

Dogs regard anything that falls on the floor as theirs. They think it's all food. Can't imagine why a dog would be attacted to seeds, that's so not even close to a doglike food. Now, if you 'tiels are tossing our veggie and fruit scraps...

If you have some extra time could you swing by Willie's page #176463 and give him a vote? He's running for BOTM and could use your vote everyday or anyday you are on BC for this month. He's giving a virtual tour of the rescue center his Mom volunteers at and posting the pics in his gallery.

Have a wonderful day, we will think cooldown for the south, wing hugs, beak kisses and a vote, Pearl and Silver.

  Hi, Piper,
Always nice to hear from you.

Your fellow FL bird, Squak, tells all her friends to 'think snow' 'cause it's up or over the 100s there. She says winter is great as it's always in the 70s...Hopefully you'll get a cooldown soon so you and the flock can get outside for the fresh air.

We pant sometimes too, but usually after flying around in circles from one room to the other before we return to our birdhouse. Birds panting from being too hot can't be a good thing. Guess the outside wild birds just have to find shade and water where they can.

Keep cool, wing hugs, beak kisses and a vote, Pearl and Silver. (Hi to the flock.)

  Hi, Piper,
Well, it's cooled back down to the 70s. The A/C is turned off and we can open the windows for fresh air and early morning sun. Hopefully it's back to normal temps for you in FL too, heat index over 100 can't be pleasant.

We were in a kayak race at the July Milonga this past Saturday and we won! Other races had birds in jet skis, sailboats and speedboats. The pics are probably still posted on the Milonga page (#165848). The other birds in their boats are so cute too.

We say a few things, but only the family can understand it! Usually when we're waking up we say, I love you. We have special squawks for warnings and for when we're about to take off flying and for greeting Mom when she comes home from work. We occasionally wolf whistle too. Gee, if your flock was all female it'd be pretty quiet, heehee. Have a great weekend, wing hugs, beak kisses and a vote, Pearl and Silver.

  Hi, Piper,
When we were adopted the parronts didn't know our gender either. After a year and after we molted our underside tails are black, so even without DNA testing we're fairly certain we're guys. No eggs either and we are both very vocal.
Are any of you females kept together? Do you 'beak battle' at all? We beak battle a bit, but not sure if it's 'cause we're males or if all 'tiels do that.
Our eyes are a deep brown color. That's probably the norm.

We didn't think about it, but we suppose all the girl 'tiels (3 of you?) also have the girl barred tails? So, you're the cinnamon? You look like you have the orange cheeks so not a white face and we know Whimsey's a pied. Mom finds it hard to tell the difference between cinnamons, pearls and silvers (Not why she named us those names, didn't know all the mutations then.) We're both the normal grays, but it's hard to tell us apart, our personalities are distinct though.

  Hi, Piper,
It's nice to go outside, but not when it's over 90. Is it normal for your area to be so hot at this time of year? We just had a couple of days of rain! Not normal. Not in CA in June. Well, at least we are out of that darn ol drought, but we'll still conserve, we hate to waste anything and we always recycle.
We have blue jays that are fairly striking in color, but a red cardinal must be a beautiful sight indeed. Many of the wild birds we see are just plain dull looking, brown and tan.

  Hi, Piper,
You had temps close to 100? In spring? Yikes, what's summer going to be like? We've had 80's a little bit, mostly in the 70's though. Is it humid there, 'cause that makes it seem even hotter. When it's hot here it's rarely very humid so it's tolerable. Haven't seen polo match in person, must be an interesting sport having to control a horse and keep possession of a ball(?)with a mallet or stick?
Are you able to see the baby cardinals when they're learning to fly? Are cardinals similar size to us 'tiels? We don't have cardinals in CA.

We've heard that Florida and California supposedly have similar weather (not counting hurricanes), but it seems like it's much hotter over there. We are cool temps and it's even raining a little the last couple of days. What must the poor outside wild birds do when it's so hot? Hide in shade or near water to keep cool we guess.

Thank you for voting! I’m almost at my goal, and I honestly didn’t think that I would make it this far so quickly! I’m 5 votes away as I type. Hooray! Well, Mama and I learned that I think corn is DELICIOUS! I think that it was yesterday, Mama was searching the fridge for something she could give me as a treat when she let me out. She found some corn (home-grown!) and decided to give it a try. I LOVE IT!! It’s so sweet and yummy :) she’s happy to see that I like it, since we ran out of strawberries (my other favorite) and we have to wait until summer to get more quality strawberries. And how does she expect me to wait that long?? I’m glad I like corn, hehe!

As I told some of you last night, I like my new bell toy now! Mama bought it for me on Tuesday, so I got used to it fairly quickly. Mama would come over to me with the bell, ding it a few times (how it works is there are 2 chains with a pink bead on one end and on the other chain a blue bead. you pull on one of the chains and it makes the bell ding). Each time Mama brought it to me, she put it closer to me on my perch in my cage. Eventually, she started to ding it and I stretched my neck up to see it better. She put it right up against the cage, and I nibbled on it. That was a good enough sign for Mama! She put it in my cage and left me alone, and she could hear me playing with it. What I do, is I just stick my beak up into it and ding it manually, hehe.

My Darling! My Princess! How ARE you? We've been having some internet issues so we were MIA for a bit and now getting caught up. Whew. We all felt disconnected from the world with no internet (and mom had about 4 zilion emails)
So listen to this - last Sunday mom was on her way to the sanctuary and somebody rear-ended her at a red light. The other driver was texting (naughty) so mom had to call Venette and tell her she wasn't making it to the sanctuary. Meanwhile, the back of the car is munched up and mom was freaking (but no injuries, thank goodness!)
Anyhow, thats the drama for now. Oh! I learned how to mesh words together. I say " Good Boy" and "Thank you" all the time, and last night I said " Good thank you boy". Hah! Mom was cracking up! I also say ' woof' and 'step up'. I'm loving this talking thing!
Ok my Princess! Say hello to your flock. I miss seeing you!

I think my bell toy is fun now! More on how I got used to it in tomorrow’s blog. I’m still wary around that ladder though ... Mama suspects it will take me a bit longer. I think so, too! I’ve never had something like that. Mama replaced my old toy that was a star shape with three ½ inch rods sticking out of it, and a little hoop attached to a chain on it. The point of it was to move the hoop onto the rods and off again. My brain’s too advanced for that, hehe! I never played with it, so now I’ve been ringing my bell :) It’s fun!

• Cuckoos don’t raise their own chicks. Instead, the mother lays her eggs in another bird’s nest. When the chick hatches, it kicks the other eggs out from the nest.
• A female chicken that is under the age of one year old is called a “pullet”

An ostrich living at the London Zoo, England was found to have swallowed an alarm clock, a roll of film, a handkerchief, a 3-foot long piece of rope, a cycle valve , a pencil, three gloves, a collar stud, a Belgian franc, four halfpennies and two farthings.

Sheesh! Talk about bad parronts! Not even taking CARE of the chicks? Wow. And I don’t think that I could even fit most of those things that ostrich ate, in my MOUTH! A pencil? Gloves? Halfpennies? A roll of FILM? WOW!

Here’s my vote for you today! Just think. In 4 days, on April first, I might be Top Bird! The Royal Archivist is still working on my portrait, I’m excited to see it! Daddy Kiddo said that I can co-host the April Milonga, so I think I have a few ideas for him. I went and saw my crown the other day... it’s beautiful! Daddy Kiddo took me to the room in the castle where they have the portraits of all past kings and queens again, and I had a blast looking at them all. There was Poirot, Kelly, Mom Sweetpepper, Miss Leah Danielle Sharon, Rainbow and more. It was great! Thank you again for supporting me in my BOTM run. I can hardly believe it’s almost over!!

Thank you so much for the vote! here’s one for you. I’m hoping to make it to 1,700 votes before April, do you think that I can do it? I’m pretty sure I can... we’ll see!

Mama bought me new toys today! But I think that they’re scary right now, so she’s going to help me get used to them. One is a bell that hangs on the side of the cage, and if I pull on the chains, it dings. She thinks I’ll love that one. And she also got me a ladder, which has crushed shells along the bars so that I will get calcium from it and also wear my toenails down.

• Most birds eggs are cared for by their mothers, but in the Rhea family, the father is in charge. He sometimes takes care of up to 60 eggs, all from different mothers in one nest.
• Hummingbirds (family Trochilidon) requires at least half their own body weight in food (mainly nectar and tiny insects) every single day.

Wow! A bird taking care of 60 eggs, sometimes from other mothers, all by himself? He must be busy! That’s cool that hummingbirds eat half their body weight in one day. That’s a lot! I wonder what it would be like to eat that much? I’m a pretty little bird, so it’s not that much though!!

Back to when Mama was in the pet store... she went into the aviary (how could she resist??) and saw a Senegal (like my Daddy Kiddo!!!) and a Jenday Conure. She said that the Conure’s name was Cliffy (I think) and the Senegal was Snickers. Anyway, Cliffy was so funny. He kept climbing up and down the cage... looking at mom... then climbing up and down again!! Really cute, but he was $700 :( Too bad! She didn’t check how much the Senegal was, but she knew that it was probably too much. She also saw the budgies, and they were only about $20. Maybe someday I’ll get a fibling, but probably not because Mama doesn’t want to have to introduce us and all of that. Plus she would have to quarantine him and everything. Hm. Well, anyway, thank you again for helping me with votes! Only 4 more days of campaigning left :)

Thank you so much for voting! WOW! Look at those votes. Now I’m at 2,500!! Thank you, Popeye 40498. I realized that I have a lot more silent voters than I thought. Yesterday, I was online and kept checking my page every like 5-10 minutes. Almost every time I checked, there would be one blog from somebirdie and like 5-10 more votes!!

Brr! It’s chilly out there! 22° F when Mama got up. Now it’s 28°. I think Bailey has it right on – It’s WinterSpring! Several of you have said how you would like the Photo Studio to stay up, so I think that I might keep it, but still make a Friends/Family photos page. I don’t know, we’ll see!

• The ostrich is the only known bird to have two toes.
• A budgie is the same thing as a parakeet, British tend to use the term budgie, Americans call them parakeets and Australians call them by their full name: Budgerigar.

Interesting! I knew that ostrich’s only had 2 toes, but I didn’t know that they’re probably the ONLY bird with two toes! I have 2 in the front and one in back, great for perching! LOL. And that’s kind of cool about the budgie names thing. Budgerigar looks hard to pronounce! ... “Bud-ger-I-Gar” I guess is how it’s pronounced.

Well, only 5 more days to go! My frother Royal #203755 is running for BOTD on March 31st, so do you think that you could help him by leaving him votes? We’re hoping that if I win BOTM and he wins BOTD, then we’ll both be in the castle together on April 1st! I know that he would greatly appreciate it if you would leave him a vote on the 31st. He used to be on BC a few months ago, and was on here for at least a year but then he wasn’t very popular and it was hard for us to keep up all of the pages (we also had some ducks and 2 other chickens on here) on one account, so we deleted all of the pages but mine. Then a few weeks ago Royal decided to join BC again and so he made himself a new account. Well, here’s my vote for you today! Thank you again for helping me with votes :) I’m so happy with how far we’ve all come!
