From occasional junk food to regularly eaten fruits, we pig out on almost everything, if deemed squawkalicious.
 We stay, conquer and rule where we want to...but usually we prefer our owner's shoulder.
 Who are the people who humiliate, hurt, kill and abuse the birds of the world? If you can call them people at all. Who are the people who cherish, love and respect us? Now, THOSE are people. Here, we discover facts on both sides: ones we like and others we detest.
 Although, we want it to be picture perfect not every bird loves their owner, which is definitely not the case for the birds of SquawkBlog or more specifically BirdChannel. Those around the world that don't love have their reasons. But no matter how much a bird bites or screams, if you care for it properly, he or she loves you. I am certain of that.
 We are the birds of the world, each with our own little habit... SquawkBlog's quirky one is that we find things that others are trying to hide and well, we squawk about them..
 Squawking about all thing birdie, here, now, because we are birds of a feather and we always squawk together.

Hi Squawkers (especially quakers)
Did you know that the natural sugars in fruit are metabolized as carbohydrates and then stored as FAT in our bodies ? So, watch your fruit intake - was at the vet this week for bloodwork (been fighting high cholesterol for almost a year) and she said fruit should be a special treat - grrrrrrrrrr - and also, she limited my nutriberries to one a day ! ! !
Just an FYI cause I don't want anybirdie to have the same issues - that mean dr. sticks needles in me every 3 mos. ! ! !Come visit me, Cookie ready for bazbol !, BC Library Now Open & Fly with the angels my Sally.

Was at Wild Birds Unlimited getting seed for the feeders outdoors (after all it is national bird feeding month) and . . .

I just read the new article about Quakers...
That is so unfair! I don't know any Quaker or live in New Hampshire but I know how it feels like to lose your best birdie friend. And the fact that Quakers have not effected the environment in 150 years is outrageous! Why do they need to ban them if they don't even do anything to farmers anymore!?!? If the government banned mitred conures in my state, mommy would probably take that to court! Sorry to all who are losing their best friends through this nonsence.

Mom used to work for Petsmart here in Reno and fortunately this store CARED. They had bird people running the small animals and no bird went out sick or hurt. The hurt ones, like Punkin, were adopted out to workers who knew how to care for them, but there are stores here that don't care for the animals at all!! Not defending the treatment or the fact that greed runs things cause they do. Just that the ones here in Reno are clean and care for the birds right...now the hamsters... sadly to say don't get the attention the birds do. Although they do not try to sell sick ones. I agree about Petsmart...
I think they do abuse their animals, I have seen the sad birds. I am a private parakeet and budgie breeder but I sell my birds from home, or to a pet store I ABSOLUTELY trust...which is only pet stores focused on birds and their well care. I've never even thought of selling to Petsmart or Petco. The one I sell my birds to is called Birdworld and it is a safe environment with the happiest birds I've ever seen. Ask Juni! Legally PetSmart shouldn't be doing anything right now. But in the world of business and money, who cares about law? I dislike that fact, but it's true. PetSmart has been investigated several times, each time worst then the first. I'm glad to see there are some great pet stores around you through. Life isn't always what it appears to be: which is the case for PetSmart. Thanks for the feedback.

I thought legally, petsmart could no longer sell "large birds", I have seen only lovebirds, cockatiels, green cheek conures and quakers. At least recently. There are 2 in Lansing,MI and this is a depressed market. Even our great pet store Preuss has fewer large birds. (WE Love Preuss, Debbie Preuss is great with birds! and Rick Preuss is a wonder with salt water aquariums) Our visits to the 2 stores in Lansing have not revealed any maltreatment.(Tho' they are still fairly new)

Hoarding...a growing problem
You've heard of puppy mills. But something people try to keep a secret is that this happens for birds too. Bird Mills. The ultimate nightmare for any avian lover. Pairs of birds are kept in a small cage with only food, water and a nest box. The parents NEVER come in contact with their chicks. The eggs are laid, put into the incubator, hatched and sold. Usually only fed a seed only diet these birds suffer. A lot. They wean birds by taking away all food that is not solid. They starve before eating the solid food. Because they don't know what to do. Unlike puppy mills there is no law right now against bird mills and hoarding. We can only hope that one day there will be.

Down with PetSmart!!!
Have you heard of PetSmart? I have. I have seen and heard about this pet store. Selling sick and injured animals for high prices. The people don't know what they are buying, until they get home...thousands of animals suffer. Including birds.
Mite infested parakeets. A stressed out Cockatoo on the verge of cracking. A Macaw and an African Grey Parrot plucking their feathers. And a Jardins parrot who was suffering from an illness, in a filthy cage with only one kind of water source...dirty.
What to we say to these monsters? After years of cases like these, they are not backing down. Why? Money. A piece of paper is more important then the lives of animals!
It might seem like it's too far away to do anything. It's not. People are helping already. But this time the helpers need help. Lend a hand. So many commercials advertising for them. So many lives being sacrificed. Why? Why?
Because they don't care. But We do. Don't you agree? Down with PetSmart!!!

Golden Oldie Oscar
"Sporting only four plumes of feathers, Oscar the Moluccan cockatoo, who is in fact a girl, looks oblivious to her almost complete baldness.
Fortunately, the 35-year-old feather-challenged bird now lives in Florida.
at the Oscar is one of the main attractions at the Humane Society of Broward County for 13 years.
‘She has become part of the family and is very particular about who she becomes friends with,’ said Cherie, her owner. ‘Of course when people first see her when they walk in they are taken aback, but they soon realise that despite her appearance she is quite a happy bird.’
Oscar was taken in by the Fort Lauderdale Centre in Florida 13 years ago after being removed from a local drugs raid. This bird had a feather disease and was given 6 month to live. Years later she is among the nicest birds and will be for a while. Search for her on the web and see her photo...only then will you fully understand her entire situation. Three cheers for this wonderful bird!!!

The homing pigeon, Cher Ami, lost an eye and a leg while carrying a message in World War I. Cher Ami won the Distinguished Service Cross. Its leg was replaced with a wooden leg.
Isn't that a bittersweet story with a happy ending? WE should be proud!
Can you believe that doctor?? What's wrong with him?! That's insanity!! It's also another reason why WE have to treat our birds with the upmost respect!!!

hi all

Kiwi and Makana here. Hey lookin good. On how you met you should write what the squawkers club is. When birds fly by they usually read that part first. Then tell there's an update daily. That ought to get their attention. And also say that if they have some hint or fact they can add it. I do like it. Interesting Fact
The oldest bird was known as an Archaeopteryx and lived about 150 million years ago. It was the size of a raven, was covered with feathers, and had wings.
