Hi! My name is SIMON ~ I LOVE REBA

I am a Blue-and-Gold Macaw from Pasco, WA.

Simmie (I call myself that), mom calls me her silly monkey bird...or her blue cockatoo...

16 years old   M

Blue-and-Gold Macaw

Walnuts, Brazil nuts, actually all nuts, I like almost all fruit but love mangos and peaches a lot.

I am also very polite and say thank you when mom or dad gives me a treat.

My boing and my mom's lap and my T-Stand...

Going back to my cage at bedtime

She loves me and feeds me lots of great food and gives me lots of toys and attention. I love sitting on her lap and cuddling...Mom calls me her cockatoo in a blue suit.

I hear a loud squawk and I fly back to my cage even if I have heard the squawk a million times before... Silly me....

Be a show off and fall in love, and I did with Reba....

  Good morning Sweetheart
I hope you had sweet dreams last night. I sure did. They were of you and me, strolling through the paddocks at the Milonga Downs, holding wings while we gazed at the beautiful horses. And then, I don't know, we ended up out in a meadow, the sun glinted off the dew on the waving grass and you were holding my face between your wingtips and looking in my eyes and I was feeling like butterflies were in my heart and then, well, darn-it, I woke up. I love it when you look at me that way... it really does make my heart feel like it's got wings and is taking flight. Speaking of the Derby, I think I've found my hat for the race. And I saw one I think would look so good on you. Would you mind if we have our picture taken together? I know we need separate ones for the hat competition but I also wanted one of us together. For now I'm wearing mine from last year but you know a girl can't be seen in the SAME hat at the next year's derby.

All the snow is gone now and lots of the grass is green. Where the drifts were piled high all winter is where the grass is the greenest. In the places where the grass was exposed to the cold and wind it's still brown. Who knows, it may have died after such a bitter winter. I hear the holly bush behind the parrot pen had to be cut back to nearly half its size as the exposed part was killed by the cold while the part buried in snow survived. What good fortune your parronts had in finding good gardeners. That'll make keeping the landscaping in tip-top shape one less thing they have to worry about being done right.

It's a gray day here again. There was lightening in the night which disturbed me a little but at least there wasn't any of that crashing thunder stuff. That racket can about scare the feathers off of you in the night!

Say, how about you look in my eyes and make my heart feel all fluttery....

*Reba steps close to Simon and gazes into his sweet face, ready for a passionate kiss from him.*

  Good morning Simon~
I'm hoping spring is treating you kindly thus far. At this moment in time, the only snow left in our yard is in the parrot pen. There was such a huge drift through there most of the winter and with the roof keeping things shady inside, the snow is the slowest to melt. No need for it to hurry, I suppose – the temps still are parrot friendly.

I've been getting lots of neck rubs from mom because all of a sudden I've got oodles of pin feathers there again. Feels so nice to have those massaged! For entertainment this week I've chosen the larger wooden blocks that come on our Angel Wing Toy Shoppe toys as the thing to chunk apart. There are wood splinters everywhere! I've just eaten a grape and my beak feels a little sticky so I won't be surprised if bits of wood stick to my beak when I resume my demolition here shortly.

Has your mom been able to plant any primroses yet? Those will be so pretty in the planters. I can picture you watching her from the warmth of the sun porch. Lucky you!

I've been browsing through catalogs, looking for just the right Derby hat. I really want something big this year! Big and bright. You'll have to duck under to share kisses with me at the race. *giggle*

Sharing some love with my guy~ XOXOXO

Yours truly, Reba

  Hello My Sweet~
How has your week been? Here it is Thursday night and the weekend's just about to start, not that that matters to me although I do like Saturday mornings when everybody else in the family sleeps in which leaves mom time to play an extra long while in my room. It's the morning lots of new parts are strung back on various toys that got beat up over the week. Here lately I've been having a good time shredding little paper cups. I can shred them about as fast as they're punched and strung on rope! Right now I'm trying to call you on mom's cell phone.... Ooops, so much for that idea. It's now out of reach. For the moment. *Chuckle*

Had only one miserable shower this week, although now that I think about it, there's still tomorrow that wicked squirt bottle could come looking for me. I had a dip in my water bowl yesterday while the vacuum was making racket. Love to swirl my forehead in the water while that machine is running!

I imagine you and your handsome beak are finding lots to keep you busy. Imagine too you're spending time out in the sun room, basking in the warmth out there. Oh, how wonderful that must feel. Enjoy a moment of it for me, would you? And while you're doing that, imagine me sharing a little kiss with you.

With loads of love~

  Hi Simon sweetie!
How are u sweetie? Well, it looks like luck is on our side today! Our county was supposed to get 10 plus inches of snow from late Saturday night thru Monday 1pm, but it's been down graded to 3-6 inches...tho it's snowing pretty good right now! Luckily, it looks like the g-kids will have a 2 he delay instead of A cancellation...all snow days have been used & any more missed days must be made up at end of school year.
Today, we will finish the Parrot's Bill of Rights.

A PARROT'S BILL OF RIGHTS (Pt 2)
7. PLEASE DON'T PUNISH ME.
Just as I don't always understand ur peculiarities, u may not understand mine. I don't TRY to get in trouble - remember...a house is NOT the jungle. If I DO screw up, don't yell at me & NEVER hit me! I have very sensitive ears & I may never trust u again if u strike me. Hands are sometimes scary things to us. (Why in the world would u not be zygodactylous like us?) Even more importantly, we don't learn by punishment. We are gentle creatures who only strike back to protect ourselves; we learn through patience & love.
8. SPEAK MY "LANGUAGE".
I know u get upset with me when I knock over my water bowl, throw food, scream or pluck my feathers. I don't do these to annoy u - I am probably trying to tell u something (perhaps that I am hurting, lonely, or sad). Learn to speak MY (body) language. Remember that I, alone of all creatures on this planet, learn to speak yours!
9. SEE ME AS AN INDIVIDUAL.
I am a unique & feeling being. No two of us are alike. Please don't be disappointed in me if I don't talk like u wanted, or can't do the tricks that ur friend's parrot can do. But if u pay close attention to me (& I always empathize with u, whether u know it or not), I will show u a unique being who will give u so much more than talking & playing. Give me a chance to show u who I am; I think you'll find the effort worth it. And remember - I am NOT an ornament; I DO NOT enhance ANY living room decor. And I am NOT a status symbol - if u use me as such, I might nip at your turned-up nose!
10. SHARE YOUR LOVE WITH ME.
Above all, PLEASE remember that u are my Special Person. I put all my trust & faith in u. We parrots are used to being monogamous (no bar-hopping for us!) So please don't go away for long periods or give me away. That would be a sadness from which I may never recover.
If that seems to be asking a lot, remember - u could have learned about my needs BEFORE bringing me home. Even having a baby or taking a new job isn't a fair reason - you made a commitment to me FIRST! And if u think that u must leave me because u might die, provide for me forever after u leave. I may live to a ripe old age but I can't provide for myself. Remember I'm in a small cage amongst people who are NOT of my blood.
AWE SHUCKS! Blog too long & cut off! Will finish last part tomorrow & continue with first aid - poisoning & toxicity. See u tomorrow sweetie!

  Hi Simon sweetie!
How are u sweetie? Congrats to my BBFF Snowflake for winning BOTM! She will be an amazing queen!

A PARROT'S BILL OF RIGHTS. by Stewart A. Metz, M.D.
1. GET TO KNOW ABOUT PARROTS BEFORE U BRING ME HOME.
I am NOT a domesticated pet like a dog or cat. I still have the spirit of the jungle in me. I have special needs, which u may find it hard to fill. Please don't learn these too late for my well-being. And please don't acquire one of my cousins wild from the jungle...it will jeopardize his survival & well-being, & that won't be a party for u either!
2. GIVE ME THE LARGEST HOME POSSIBLE.
I am used to flying through rainforests or savannahs. I have given up this great gift for ur pleasure. At the very least, give me enough room to flap my wings & exercise. And o need toys for my amusement & wood to chew...otherwise, I might confuse ur home with the forest & its trees.
3. GIVE ME A NUTRITIOUS DIET.
I need a wide variety of fresh & nutritious foods, even if they take time to prepare. I cannot survive on seed alone. Take time to learn what mynneeds are.
4. LET ME HAVE A "SOCIAL LIFE".
I am a gregarious flock animal...but I am NOT one of u. I need lots of socialization to learn how to act with u, & with my siblings. I also need to have adequate quality time with u every day - no matter what it schedule or other needs are. I am a living, feeling creature. Above all, I need to be able to have complete trust in u, & count on ur predictability in looking after me - EVERY DAY.
5. LET ME BE CLEAN.
I may like to drop food or even throw it, but I need meticulous cleanliness to be healthy. My skin itches without frequent showers, the barbs of my feathers won't seal if they become oily & worst of all, I may become ill if my food & water is not always sanitary.
6. I NEED MY OWN DOCTOR.
U may not understand my physiology & therefore u may not recognize it early on when I get sick. And it may be too late when u do, because I hide my illnesses (remember what I said about my being an animal of the jungle, where there are lots of predictors). And I need an avian vet - a specialisy (no HMOs for me please). If u can't afford one, perhaps u shouldn't have taken me home.
I will send u the 2nd part tomorrow. Have a great day sweetie!

  Hi Simon sweetie!
How are u sweetie? WOW, did this month fly by! I can't believe this is my last day as ur BOTM queen! But I'm very happy & excited for my dear friend Snowflake, who will be my successor! First thing tomorrow, I will hand over the castle keys, & take her by the wing & give her the grand tour of her new home for the month!
Tomorrow, I will send u the first part of A Parrot's Bill of Rights. It's like a parrot owners manual, short version, with a bit of comic relief added in! Today, I will finish A Parrot's Prayer. I have to warn u, the second part is as heartbreaking as the first, & will leave a lump in ur throat.

A PARROT'S PRAYER (cont.)
LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER...
For all the macaws, cockatoos, amazons & conures that are stripped of their vocal cords for screaming; their sensitive beaks cut back to prevent biting.
LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER...
For all birds that end up for sale in pet shops or breeders like used merchandise, unwanted & frightened in strange surroundings with nothing more than the familiar sight of bars on a cage.
LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER...
For all the neglected birds that are sick with infections from filthy conditions & malnourishment that may never recover & know what it is like to feel healthy & be playful.
LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER...
For all the misconceived parrots who were beaten, stabbed, blinded & burned for just being a parrot.
LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER...
For every african grey, cockatoo & macaw that punishes itself by maiming their bodies & plucking their feathers & for those who have lost all spirit of life & sway their head low from side to side slowly into insanity.
LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER...
We ask humbly of you dear Lord to look upon all of your magnificent feather creations, protect them from evil & harm caused by man & to bring forth an awakening in the human heart & make it a kinder, gentler world for all captive birds.
AMEN.
Written by Sally Brooks

Every time mom reads this, her eyes fill with tears & she holds me a little closer & gives me extra kisses. As much as she loves me, she just can't imagine people being so despicable to do these things to these wondrous & magnificent creatures! I know that everybirdy's moms feel the same way...especially the moms that have rehomed birds and rescues, who have given a home to broken & battered birds...& God bless each one of you! I hope u have a great day, & I'll see u tomorrow sweetie!

Mom would like to thank everybirdy for their encouragement & support for her quitting smoking...it really means a lot to her! She has been "quitting" for the last year or so with not much success! She is sooooo happy that the Lord took away withdrawal torture! Mom could never quit before coz she could never make it past the 3 weeks of torturous withdrawal symptoms. But this time she had no physical withdrawal at all...which is truly a blessing from God!

  Hi Simon sweetie!
How are u sweetie! I meant to be back sooner, but since mom is feeling a lot better, she has been busy! Plus giving me attention is a full time job! It's been over a month & mom still isn't smoking! That's another reason mom hasn't been online much...it's an activity she associates with smoking & the only time she craves one, but it's starting to go away! There is still a lot of first aid info I would like to go over, but first, we would like to share a couple things that are in one of mom's books. Both are very thought provoking & also very true. I will start with A PARROT'S PRAYER, (which is incredibly sad & infuriating!, then A PARROT'S BILL OF RIGHTS. Each should take 2 days.

A PARROT'S PRAYER
LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER...
For all the wild caught parrots so savagely netted & swept away from their families while their babies, dumped into burlap sacks, cried out in terror.
LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER...
For all the exotic birds that witnessed the destruction of all the blessed trees & fled fires in fear from man's thirst to dominate, stripping the land of all its inhabitants, leaving nothing but bare ground behind.
LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER...
For all the parrots that struggled through the capture, but died merciless in transport from the stress of overcrowded, barbaric, confinements & inconceivable horror.
LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER...
For all the survivors that made it into captivity but exist in a nightmare of confinement unable to use their God given wings of flight as they once remembered.
LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER...
For all the baby birds bred in captivity whose crops burned or have died needlessly from harshness of human hands.
LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER...
For all captive birds that have been erased from their owner's consciousness & are abandoned to a lifeless existence with only a distant memory of what it was like to hear a gentle voice from someone that used to care.
LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER...
For all those helpless creatures who don't know what it's like to live life as a bird or even to feel the breeze or sunlight but are doomed to darkness in closets or garages, trapped inside covered cages or shackled.

Heartbreaking, isn't it? I will finish the Parrot's Prayer tomorrow. Have a great day sweetie!

  Hello There, Good Lookin'!
How's the week been for you? For me, oh, okay I guess, well, except for the nail and beak trim I got back on Tuesday I think it was. Maybe you heard me hollering about the abuse. I so despise that stupid towel and the dreadful dremmel tool. Mom says I did better this time than anytime in the past which is why it went a little quicker than usual. That and there wasn't much on my beak to trim or buff off.

There's still snow here, even after a day of incredible rain. It was weird — one minute we had white fields everywhere and the next, great big lakes of water! The ground's frozen so the rain couldn't soak in. Instead, it pooled and puddled (and covered up the road out front for awhile) and then frozen solid two days later. Mom says its' a real pain to walk around out in the yard now. We need some 60° days like you've had to get rid of all the ice. It's headed towards -2° again tonight. Boy, could I use a big, strong Blue & Gold macaw to snuggle up close to tonight!!

Thanks for the warm love you share with me, Simon. It saves me!

Love you, love you~

  Good morning, Handsome
How's my favorite macaw in all the world? Sleep wonderfully last night? I sure did. If the thunder and lightening we've got going on here right now had happened in the night, I probably wouldn't have slept as well. It looks rather odd to see torrential rain when the ground's still covered in snow! Saber was asking about taking a bath this morning and mom suggested he could go out in the rain. She had to be kidding tho because it's only 34 degrees.

How are things in your stretch of the world? Looks like your mom got some beautiful flowers for Valentine's, perhaps. Wouldn't they be fun to nibble on! And your mom's nails, Wow!! So pretty. You think mine would look as nice painted like that? *Reba holds out a foot and has a long study of her black nails. She then bats her lash at Simon as she smiles a sweet and flirty grin.*

Nothing exciting to share. I've been rather quiet lately, just sort of hanging out wherever mom happens to park me. I haven't even been gnawing on the woodwork around the doors lately. Bored with that, I guess.

Hope your day's an exciting one! Maybe a kiss from your girl will start it off that way...

Love you, Simon.

  Happy Valentine's Day, My Love
*Reba reaches out to hold Simon's handsome face between her wingtips, then she places a tender kiss on his beak.* That's a thank you for the beautiful flowers and the sweet sentiment on the card. Oh Simon, they're just beautiful, all these roses. You're such a sweetie to think of me on this Valentine's Day. And Yes! I'll be your Valentine. Forever!!

That's so funny about your mom being so loud during the Superbowl! Bless her heart, I'm sure she would've liked to have been leaping about the room, punching the air, and stomping her feet in pure excitement. All that craziness is a part of being a fan, isn't it. There's been times I could hear mom hootin' and hollerin' up on the loft during a Sunday night game, and this while I was trying to get my beauty sleep.

You had over 8" of snow?? We've not gotten that in one snow fall yet this year. Well, maybe the first one was nearly that much but mom wasn't here to see it. She was in Colorado the first part of December and only saw pictures of that snow. It's snowing again today. Looks like another 2 or 3" has covered everything. The sun's trying to shine now so I suspect the snowfall will be ending soon. Tonight's low is set to be -2 and then it looks like no more of this ridiculous cold stuff. At least not for a couple of weeks anyway.

I hope the sun's shines for you today so that you can lounge in the warmth out in the sunroom. I bet it's so nice out there.

Again, thanks for the flowers and the card. I love you dearly, Simon, my Valentine.

  Hi Simon sweetie!
How are u sweetie? What a month I'm having! I'M THE QUEEN, but I've been banished to the dungeon (my cage is in sissy's basement)! Mom had been sick, so I don't understand why she went on vacation for 4 days to a place called a hospital! She won a trip there coz she had something called pneumonia. It seems to have been a good place for her to go coz she doesn't look like a walking zombie anymore! Another good thing that came out of her trip was that she quit smoking! It's been 3 weeks since she smoked one of those nasty things! Mom always smoked outside, & never around me, but she always smelled of those yucky things. Mom is happy, she tried to quit dozens of times but was never successful. Mom was sooooo sick, that she didn't even suffer withdrawal! Being sick gave mom a wake-up call...she struggled to breathe the last couple weeks & that scared the crap out of her! Also, not buying any cigarettes these last 3 weeks, she's had a bunch of extra money (to spend on ME of course! In the next couple days, I will resume birdie first aid blogs. I still have lots of first aid info that I want to share with all my birdie friends!

Oh, I wanted to share with all my dear friends. .my sissy Amanda's biopsy came back NORMAL!!!! We are sooooo relieved & so thankful to God that sissy doesn't have cancer! Mom was having a hard trying to pretend everything was fine so that sissy wouldn't be quite as scared! The ENT Doc seems to think it may caused by something viral. Sissy isn't going to bother pursuing it right now, but sometime in the future! First aid blogs will start back up again in the next day or 2, mom is trying to get things in order after being in the hospital. See u soon sweetie!

  GO SEAHAWKS!!!!!
Oh Simon, you have to be so happy about your 'Hawks winning the SuperBowl. Did you squawk yourself hoarse with excitement during the game?? I can tell you it was pretty quiet here for most of that evening. Mom said her pizza didn't taste very good at all, but I bet your snacks tasted very much like Victory Cake! Congrats on your team's super year and amazing trophy game!

So, what's new with you? Me, not much. I molted a bunch of feathers but the new ones are already back in and looking pretty good. RaneBeau, he blew out a bunch of feathers about the same time I did but he's taking forever to get them grown back in and feathered out. In the meantime, he's being so boring, at least in my opinion. He won't even come play with me on the floor, so I hang out behind the door by myself sometimes. The top of the cage has a selection of foot toys, baby rattles and whatnot and I spend time fiddling with those or dropping them on the ground. I also like to perch in the kitchen while whatever's going on. I'm so quiet, mom about forgets I'm there sometimes. I'm the bestest girl about staying put so I usually get to be out the longest.

Well, I won't keep you any longer. I started this note about 11 o'clock this morning but as is the norm around here, it got interrupted a dozen times. I'm hoping to finish it now before lights out and sweet dreams of you.

Here's a little Greenwing kiss, if you'd like one...

  Hi Simon sweetie
DAY 31
How are u sweetie? It's been a rough week here! Sissy had her biopsy on Wednesday. She's a little bit sore, but not too bad. The Dr said she would have sissy's results in a week. Mom has a horrible case of bronchitis & hasn't been out of bed since last Saturday, except for a Drs appt on Tuesday & chest x-ray on Thursday! Mom is going to have to make another appt. She's finished her antibiotic & is feeling worse instead of feeling better.

I want to thank each one of my dear friends for all ur support during my campaign, it has really meant a lot to me! I want to thank everybirdy that put my name & page # on their name tags...that really meant a lot to me! I would like to give sweet Momma Deb a special thanks for all the awesome campaign pics that she made for me! If it wasn't for Momma Deb, I wouldn't have had any pics!

Mom ALMOST forgot my Hatchday, good thing sissy remembered! I'm sure it's the fever & lack of sleep!

There is still lots & lots of first aid info that I want to share with u! I will continue doing blogs! It should take up all of Feb, maybe March too! Mom is going to get this blog out, then spoil me the rest of my Hatchday! She needs to start treating me like a queen!

  Good morning, Love
I am just lovin' these latest photos of you! Just look at you soaking up love and scritches from your mom and you lay in her lap! What a cutie! It looks like you've got a nice hold on her thumb, not wanting her hand to get too far away from you! I wish I could get into a bath like it appears you do. I spend all my time trying to hide from the water droplets, not trying to be under them when they fall. Had me one of those loathsome showers just yesterday, and that after the one I had to endure just two days ago. I will say I'm better about it than when I first moved here. Back then I practically hurt myself trying to leap away from the spray bottle.

I bet your family is SO excited about your Seahawks going to the SuperBowl!! Will you be watching the game with the parronts? Just think of all the snacks there'll be for nibbling on! I know popcorn will be one of the treats around here so I'm sure to get at least a few kernels of that.

I trust your dad is back on his feet and in full service once again. That being sick stuff is just no fun.

While the snow here is not gone, it's greatly diminished what with the couple of warmer days we had and then the violent wind that blew much of it elsewhere, wherever that might be. What's left is so un-pretty, it's hard to look at. The 40-50 mph winds blew dirt from the empty fields and made the snow black in some places. Mom wishes all of it would melt and a new coat of white would fall. I wish it would all go away and STAY AWAY. I'm so ready to be able to go outside. It's starting to get boring, trying to find stuff to do indoors. I've got a new 2x8 board to stand on (and chew on) so at least there's something to keep my beak busy for awhile yet. That's funny about how wood pieces are circulated around at your place, ending up with Taz who will gnaw on anything! Sounds like he's the garbage disposal when it comes to wood chunks. I suppose that would be me here at the McFlock's place. :)

That invitation to come sit with you in your sunroom, does that still stand? I'd love to hang out with you in that beautiful, cozy place! We could sneak in a beaky kiss or two....

Love and Kisses~

Your girl, REBA

  Hi Simon Sweetie
DAY 26 -- NO BLOG #25
How are u sweetie? I wonder if anybirdy else had trouble getting on BC yesterday? I kept getting kicked off every time I tried to leave a blog, so I'll do yesterday's blog today.
Today, we will discuss:
DANGEROUS FOODS
In general, foods which are safe & healthy for parrots to eat. However, there are exceptions. These are a few examples of foods to avoid:
ALCOHOL -- Avoid completely; consumption can lead to brain damage & death.
APPLE SEEDS -- Contain cyanide. (All pits & seeds from fruits are best avoided.)
AVOCADO -- (Including guacamole.)vPit contains cyanide, which can leech from pit into the avocado flesh. Avoid completely; consumption is known to have caused death within hours.
CHOCOLATE -- Avoid completely; consumption of even small quantities can cause rapid onset of hyperactivity, vomiting, diarrhea, heartbeat irregularities, seizures, & death. If u suspect ur bird has ingested chocolate, administer 1 cc of Pepto-Bismol & rush ur bird to an avian vet.
CAFFEINE -- Includes caffeinated beverages, coffee grounds, & tea bags or ice tea crystals. See symptoms & treatment listed under chocolate.
FAT -- AVOID feeding high fat foods; excess fat over time can cause fatty liver disease, obesity, diarrhea & oily feather texture. Excess fat in the diet can also interfere with the absorption of other nutrients, such as calcium.
ONIONS: -- Excessive amounts of cooked or raw onions can be toxic to ur bird. Too many onions in the diet can destroy red blood cells & cause anemia, jaundice, & bloody urine.
RHUBARB LEAVES -- Avoid completely; consumption can cause death.
SALT -- Consumption can cause excessive drinking & urinating, depression, neurologic hyperactivity, tremors & death. When necropsied, birds having consumed excessive amounts of salt show a great deal of fluid buildup in the brain & hemorrhaging. Mushrooms, garlic, Mistletoe, tobacco, batteries, some coins, mirror backing, foil, are some other examples or bird poisons. We will cover toxic plants & heavy metal next. Here's hoping BC is back to normal. I suspected that there was a problem, coz at 6pm yesterday, I hadn't received any blogs. When I got on BC this morning, there was blogs there from yesterday...strange! This is the first time I didn't have a bog that I can't blame mom! I hope u had a good day & I'll see u tomorrow!

  Hi Simon sweetie
DAY 24
How are u sweetie? Today, we will continue with POISONS -- HOME TREATMENT. First, I would like thank everybirdy for their prayers & kind words of encouragement. It really means a lot to us! I would also like to give a great big thank you to sweet Momma Deb for yet another fantastic campaign pic! I would not have had any campaign pics if it wasn't for Momma Deb, THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH!!!
POISONING -- HOME TREATMENT
First, try to determine what may have poisoned ur pet. Birds can be poisoned by inhaling fumes, by ingesting a poisonous plant or chemical, or by coming in contact with a poison on their skin.
WHAT YOU CAN DO AT HOME:
IF BY ACIDS, ALKALIS, OR PETROLEUM PRODUCTS: make the bird swallow mulk, mixed with Pepto-Bismol, egg white, or olive oil. DO NOT induce vomiting!!
IF BY OTHER: Induce vomiting. Use mustard & water solution put at back of the throat.
IF KNOWN: Call poison control center. (If burned, SEE BURNS, blog #18).
VETERINARY TREATMENT
Stabilizing the bird is most important, especially if she is in shock (blog #11), convulsing (blog #22), or having breathing problems (blog #17). A complete physical & general supportive care will be administered. If ingested, medication can be given to reduce the absorption of the poison into the bloodstream.
PREVENTION
You can help prevent poisoning in ur bird by following these steps:
*Make sure food & water is always fresh.
*Wash all fruits & vegetables before serving them to ur bird.
*Keep potentially poisonous household products out of ur bird's reach.
*Do not let ur bird fly free in the kitchen or bathroom.
*Do not use products with strong fumes, such as cleaning products, around ur bird.
*Do not use fungicides, herbicides, insecticides or rodenticides around ur bird without consulting ur avian vet.
*Do not let ur bird near ur houseplants.
*Do not leave cigarettes or other tobacco products where ur bird can reach them. Ideally,do not smoke around ur bird, either.
*Do not use nonstick cookware because overheated nonstick items can emit potentially fatal fumes for ur bird.
*Immediately consult ur avian vet. If u suspect any potential poisoning problems in ur pet.
Tomorrow, we will cover DANGEROUS FOODS & POISONOUS PLANTS. Sweet dreams sweetie, see u tomorrow!

  Hi Simon sweetie
DAY 23
Hi everyone, I'm Sandy, TiaMaria's mom. Before I start today's blog, I would like to ask my dear BC friends to pray for my oldest daughter, Amanda. She is 31 & is the mom of my 3 grandkids. She went to the Dr on Tuesday because she was getting concerned about having swollen lymph nodes. The Dr was concerned & ordered a CT scan, which she had done yesterday morning. The results were given to the Drs office & they called my daughter & told her she needs to have a biopsy done. The Drs office scheduled her appt with the surgeon before they even called my daughter, she has an appt to see a surgeon tomorrow, coz they want the biopsy done ASAP. Dr told her they want the biopsy done to rule out lymphoma. We are all nervous wrecks over this. I appreciate any?all prayers for her. Thank you.
Today, we will start discussing POISONING & TOXICITY.
POISONING
Some poisons can kill a bird quickly. Others can cause clinical signs ranging from a mild digestive tract upset to a violent illness. If ur bird is poisoned & u are unable to reach ur avian vet, u should call an animal poison control center. I have the phone #s for two:
(1). ASPCA ANIMAL POISON CONTROL CENTER -- 1-888-ANI-HELP or, 1-888-426-4435 ($60.00 per case). The $60.00 consultation fee may be charged to ur credit card.

(2). NATIONAL ANIMAL POISON CONTROL CENTER (NAPCC). The NAPCC is located at the University of Illinois. Phones are answered 24 hours a day, & each call is handled by a vet who is specially trained in animal poisoning. There is a $65.00 charge per case, but it could mean the difference between life & death for ur bird. The NAPCC's numbers are: 1-800-548-2423 (billed as a flat rate of $65.00) or 900-680-0000 (billed on a per-minute basis.
SIGNS -- A poisoned bird may suddenly regurgitate, develop diarrhea, bloody droppings, redness or burns around her mouth, go into convulsions, become paralyzed, go into shock or any number or other abnormalities. Tomorrow, we will continue with POISONING, starting with HOME TREATMENT. Hope u had a good day, see u tomorrow!

  Hi Simon sweetie
DAY 22
How are u sweetie? BRRRR! It's a cold day today! At 10am, it's still 3 degrees BELOW ZERO! Supposed to have a high of 5 degrees! My blog yesterday was too long & got cut off. I will first finish up: HEATSTROKE
PREVENTION
You can reduce ur bird's chances of suffering heatstroke by keeping her out of direct sun, providing her with ample supplies of clean, fresh water & not keeping her in a car on a hot day. Interior temps in a car can rise quickly during hot weather, which can cause serious problems for all pets.
For about the next week, starting tomorrow, we will be discussing POISONING & TOXICITY. Today, we will cover CONVULSIONS, as this is a symptom of poisoning.
CONVULSIONS (SEIZURES)
A convulsion, which is a series of violent & involuntary muscle contractions, indicates that there is a very serious underlying medical problem. Convulsions are not a diagnosis, rather they are the result of any number of problems that include head trauma, infection, lead poisoning, some nutritional deficiencies, low blood sugar, low blood calcium, heatstroke, neurological disease & epilepsy (brain malfunction causing recurring seizures.
SIGNS --In the minutes before a convulsion a bird may appear apprehensive & restless. A convulsion may only affect a single wing or leg or could involve the entire body or affected limb. The bird may also lose her balance & fall to the floor or even lose consciousness. Convulsions usually last only a few seconds, but can last a minute or two. The time interval between them can vary. They may occur a few minutes apart, or they may occur days or even months apart. There is no effective home treatment for convulsions. The underlying cause must be determined & treated to prevent further episodes. Remove objects from bird's cage, such as toys & perches, to protect her from further injury. This. Is an emergency & ur avian vet will want to examine ur bird immediately. Medication is available to control convulsions. However, to actually prevent them from occurring, the underlying cause should be determined.
See u tomorrow sweetie, pleasant dreams!

  Hi Simon sweetie
DAY 21----No BLOG #20
How are u sweetie? Today, we will cover FROSTBITE & HEATSTROKE.
FROSTBITE (HYPOthermia)
Frostbite is an emergency because, in a moderate case, the bird's toes could be lost; or, in a severe case, the bird could die.
SIGNS -- The frostbitten area will be very painful, cold & hard to the touch. After several days the affected area may become very hard, dry & dark black in color.
HOME TREATMENT -- place the bird in a warm environment (85° to 90°F.). U can use a heat lamp or a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel. Take extreme care not to burn the bird. Warm up the damaged tissue very gradually in a warm circulating water bath. Food & water should be easily accessible to bird. Monitor the air temp to avoid overheating. Determine the cause of the chilling. Watch for signs of shock (blog #11). If it is due to environmental conditions such as power outage or drafts, fix the problem or locate the bird. Ur avian vet will want to examine ur bird.
VETERINARY TREATMENT -- Ur avian vet will warm the bird gradually by placing her in an incubator & administering intravenous (IV) fluids. Ur avian vet will want to examine the bird.
PREVENTION -- Keep birds indoors during extremely cold weather. Most pet birds can tolerate outdoor temps that dip down to 30°F. Cold temps combined with dampness &/or wind will create an ideal environment for frostbite to develop. Birds housed outdoors in cold weather should not be kept on metal perches.
HEATSTROKE (HYPERthermia)
Overheated birds can go into shock quickly.
Heatstroke most commonly occurs if:
*The bird is kept in a cage in direct sunlight where there is no shade or shelter from the sun.
*A bird is in a vehicle with the windows closed or with inadequate ventilation.
*Too much supplemental heat, in the form of a heat lamp or heating pad, is supplied.
*The bird is wrapped in a towel (a common method of restraint) for an excessive length of time.
SIGNS -- An environment that is very warm & a bird that is panting, holding her wings down & away from her body. The bird will also be extremely weak & could go into shock or a coma. Overheating tends to occur more commonly in birds that are overweight, so keep ur bird at its ideal weight. Heatstrokevi?+
HOME TREATMENT -- First, remove the bird from her hot environment & place her in a cool area. Start to reduce her body temp by placing her in an air-conditioned room, in front of a fan, or spraying her with cool water from a misting bottle. Make sure the feathers are wet to the skin. Offer the bird cool water to drink if she is able, or begin to give her a few drops of cool water by mouth. Contact ur avian vet's office for further instructions.
VETERINARY TREATMENT -- In addition to general supportive care, the patient will be placed in a cool, well-oxygenated & moist environment. Dehydration can be treated by administering fluids. The bird should be closely monitored for at least 24 hours.
PREVENTION -- You can reduce ur bird's chances of

  Hi Simon sweetie
DAY 19
How are u sweetie? Today, we will cover CONCUSSIONS & DIARRHEA (I guess we can call it "heads or tails")?!
CONCUSSION
A concussion is caused by a blow to the head & could lead to unconsciousness. This type of injury frequently occurs when a bird crashes into walls, windows, etc when flying freely through the house. Place ur injured bird in a dark quiet place & consciousness occurs, or ur bird does not rapidly return to normal, emergency vet care is critical.
DIARRHEA
Diarrhea can cause dehydration & a loss of nutrients. Diarrhea is actually uncommon in pet birds. Excessive urine is much more common & frequently mistaken for diarrhea. Remember, if the stool is solid & formed, it IS NOT diarrhea. Increased urine will, however, cause the stool to become wet & slightly loose. Causes of diarrhea can include diet (sudden change in type of food or spoiled food), intestinal infection, poisoning, ingestion of a foreign object, parasites, generalized diseases, egg laying or egg-binding, overtreatment with antibiotics & stress.
SIGNS -- The signs of diarrhea are loose, watery & unformed stool.
HOME TREATMENT -- If ur bird has diarrhea, remove any non-food items which she may be chewing. Feed a bland diet of soft fresh foods, such as pasta, rice, beans & cooked oatmeal. U might consider giving Pepto-Bismol or Kaopectate in the following doses:
Finches/canaries: 4 drops every 4 hrs
"Budgies": 6 drops every 4 hrs
Cockatiels: 10 drops (0.5cc) every 4 hrs
Amazons: 20 drops (1cc) every 4 hrs
Cockatoos & Macaw: 30 drops (1.5cc) every 4 hrs
Remember, any treatment offered at home will delay more specific treatment by ur vet. This time delay may be very significant if bird has a serious health problem.
VET TREATMENT -- Because diarrhea is only the result of a problem & not a diagnosis vets need to try & determine the underlying cause to resolve the problem. Diagnostic tests, such as stool analysis &/or culture, X-rays & blood tests, may be recommended.
See u tomorrow! THANK U FOR UR SUPPORT!!!

  Hi Simon sweetie
DAY 18
How are u sweetie? Today, we will cover BURNS.
Burns can be very serious & very painful to a bird. Shock & infection could possibly occur. Exposure to high temps (flame, hot liquids, steam or any hot object), electricity or chemicals can cause burns. Burns should be suspected if an area of the skin has a very inflamed, irritated appearance, or if the feathers are greasy or burnt. First, try & determine what type of burn ur bird has suffered. The type of burn determines the treatment that should be followed. If ur bird has been burned by HOT WATER, mist the burned area with cool water, or if a leg or foot, immerse the burned area in cool water to help relieve the pain. An antibiotic ointment should be applied. To avoid further damaging the feathers, this med should be either a water-soluble liquid,, spray or powder. Do not apply any oily or greasy substances, including butter, because these substances can damage the bird's feathers.
If the bird has been burnedby HOT GREASE, lightly coat the burned area with flour or cornstarch to help absorb the grease.
If the bird has been burned by ACID, such as toilet bowl cleaner or drain cleaner, gently flood the area with cool water to dilute the chemical, then lightly coat burned area with a paste of baking soda & water.
If the bird has been burned by an ALKALI SUBSTANCE, such as ammonia or lye, gently flood the area with cool water to dilute the chemical, then coat the burned area lightly with vinegar.
If the bird has been burned by an ELECTRICAL SOURCE, such as chewing on a power cord, first turn off the power & disconnect the cord. No home treatment is recommended. Birds suffering from burns may go into shock & will need prompt attention (shock-blog #11). Most burns are a true medical emergency & requires immediate vet attention. However, mild burns may be sprayed or flushed with cool water. These burns may be treated twice daily with small amounts of antibiotic ointment. Tomorrow, we will cover CONCUSSIONS & DIARRHEA. I hope u had a great day sweetie, see u tomorrow!

  Hi Simon sweetie
DAY 17
How are u sweetie? Today, we will cover blood in droppings & difficulty breathing.
BLOOD IN DROPPINGS
One of the most common reasons for blood in the droppings is heavy metal toxicosis (we will cover this later), especially from lead & zinc. This toxicosis can cause blood in urine. If u notice this, seek vet care immediately. Blood may also be seen in droppings due to intestinal or cloacal infections, cloacal growths, or with difficulty passing eggs. Dark tarry droppings may indicate bleeding higher up in the small intestine. Seek vet care.
DIFFICULTY BREATHING
Anytime an animal is having difficulty breathing, it must always be considered life-threatening. If in respiratory distress, a bird's condition can rapidly deteriorate. Check the nostrils for blockage. If external blockage is observed, such as caused by mucus, wipe with a damp cloth. Look for any other blockage such as seeds or dirt. The operculum, a small part of the bird's anatomy inside the nostril could be mistaken for a foreign body, so have ur vet examine & remove any suspected blockage. Wheezing rapid breathing, open-mouthed breathing & nasal discharge are obvious signs of respiratory distress. Less obvious signs could include tail bobbing (pronounced up & down motion of the tail), frequent stretching of the neck, swelling around the eye, loss of voice & sometimes a "clicking-like" sound when breathing. Shortness of breath can also be caused by illness. In that case, the bird should. Be seen promptly by ur vet.
HOME TREATMENT
Keep the bird warm, keep the environment calm & relaxed & consider covering the cage to help reduce ur bird's stress level. Also, turning on a vaporizer near the cage for short periods of time or placing ur caged bird (or a stand for a large bird) in a "steamy" bathroom may help ease labored breathing. Call ur vet's office & ask to be seen immediately. Panting or open-mouth breathing could be caused by overheating due to fright, exercise, or environmental temperature. Overheated birds can develop heatstroke (we will cover this). In these cases, the bird may also hold its wings outstretched from his body, pant heavily, & collapse. Allow the bird to remain quiet in a cooler location. Mist the bird with cool water & have bird stand on a cool wet towel. Do not cool the bird too quickly. Contact ur vet to determine if further treatment is necessary.
Tomorrow, we will cover burns.
I would like to thank you for all the support you have given me with my campaign. I am truly blessed to have such caring & wonderful friends!
