  Hi Oatie and Makana !
You two have to learn to share mom ! There's enough love in her for both of you ! We sure hope she's feeling better today !

It's Sunday - and it's getting chilly and windy here. Dad got up during the night to close windows :( So when mom got up (after sleeping in till almost 6:00 !), instead of getting right on line with her coffee like she usually does, she went out to start cleaning up the back deck. There's a freeze warning for tonight so all the plants have to be cleaned off (bugs) and dragged in before the end of the day . . .

Mom also has a little school work to get done which I'm hoping she'll let me assist with ! Math tests and compositions . . .

Have a great Sunday ! love Cookie

Come visit me, Cookie - putting a spell on you !, BC Library Now Open & Fly with the angels my Sally.

  October BOTM POST number twelve
Hello friends, Jesse here with our Saturday BOTM Adventure Post. As we turned for a final look at BC Lake, the water is once more calm, glass-like and no sign of the past violent storm remains. Even the row-boats have disappeared. "WHAT! The row-boats, their gone!" Kacey exclaims loudly as she stares in disbelief. For indeed the boats had vanished into thin air.
BB looks at Sky and Jesse, then back at the Lake, "I hope we can find the BC Castle. It is funny that it has disappeared on us. I know it is a magical place but why would it vanish on the birds who love it sooooo much???" Then looking down towards the ground she says with a sigh, "Can somebirde please remove Cookie from around my legs? Its hard to waddle this way."
" SURE HOPE WE FIND OUR WAY BACK TO THE CASTLE THEN FIND OUR FRIENDS. THIS IS ONE SCAREY TRIP.' Sweetpepper tells Kiddo with worry in her voice. Kiddo takes her wing in his, and holds her tightly. "We'll get out of here, don't you worry Sweetpepper."
Spot comes to where Sky, BB and Jesse are standing, trying to decide what to do next. Jake walks towards the group, but suddenly stops dead in his tracks. "What was that?" he asks pointing to where he had thought he saw something peaking out of the grass at him. Seeing nothing he joins the others.
Bonbon looks and sees that her picture with Parker is in the photo album Hesse has on his gallery. turning to spot and Parker she says, "Jesse put me and Parker in the profile!Hehee!!! I can't wait to show Snowflake........ Oh no! I forgot that she disappeared!" BonBon starts to cry loudly because she misses her friend!
Spot hugs her and says, "don't worry BonBon. We'll find her and all the others too!"(He sounds more confidant than he feels, but he won't let BonBon see that!)
"Hey, Panther! I have an idea! We're tiels, and fly well! let's go up as high as we can and look for them!"
"Good idea, Spot," says Panther.
Jesse says, "you guys be careful! And keep up in sight range, OK?"
"OK, let's go Panther!" Spot lifts into the air
They fly straight up and fly in a big circle looking for their friends. Finally, they land and report to Jesse. "We didn't see them, we also didn't see the castle in any direction! I think we're lost!"
Worry lines form on Jesse's handsome face again, and he says, "it must be a trick of some kind by the BC ghosts! The Castle has to be there. It's always easy to find from the Lake."
Jake and Sky stand close, talking. "I am certain I saw tiny black eyes staring at me from over there, then they disappeared." Sky looks in the direction Jake indicated. Seeing nothing he frowns. " We better go check it out, just to be sure." The two boys inch closer to where the eyes had been. Parting the grass carefully using a stick Sky found on the ground they lean over for a better looks and suddenly the air is split in two by their terrified screams........

  October BOTM POST number eleven
Helloooooo, Jesse screams in fright as the row boat bounces wildly on the storm tossed lake. The waves reach high over the sides of the row-boats filling them with cold, icy water. The frightened birds yell for help, their voices lost in the crashes of thunder from above.
After what feels like an eternity, the small wooden row-boats bump roughly into the rocky shores of the BC Lake. With a deep sigh of relief everybirdie scrambles to escape from the angry waters, and wind, jumping over the edge quickly, and running for cover in the nearby brush that watches over the normally quiet Lake. Jesse crawls along the beach, counting heads, making certain everybirdie is safely ashore. With so many disappearing he doesn't plan to take any chances at all from here on. Sitting down beside SKY, BB and Jake Jesse rubs his chin as he thinks of the next thing he ought to do. HE frowns sadly, uncertainly etching his handsome face with worry lines.
"I'm not certain where we are?" Jesse says, sneaking a peak out from around the brush he and the others are hankered down behind.
"We aren't far from the Castle. In fact from every point of BC Lake we can see the Castle. We need to get our bearings." BB says with confidence.
"Ok, Jake and I will head up that small hill and get a better idea where we are." Sky says climbing to his feet, with Jake beside him. ' Be right back" he tells BB and Jesse as they head off up the hill.
"You any idea where we are?" Sky asks Jake as they climb the hillside.
"NOPE!" Jake says looking around slowly. " NEVER saw this place before"
Sky takes Apache's binoculars from his jacket pocket and scans the area. " I can't find the Castle. Actually I can't see anything I recognize."
Sky hands Jake the binoculars. HE looks along time, then " whistles softly. Nope, me either. I think if we head towards the west we will find the Castle, or at least something we will remember."
Sky and Jake climb back down to where they'd left Jesse and BB. After a moment of explanation, they decide that they better keep moving. BB agrees that the Castle should lay tot he West. Jesse once more moves down the brushes, stopping to explain the plan to each group of nervous adventurers. He stops where Falco and Boo Boo sit quietly looking rather scared. " I'll get you outta here, and we will find the others. I promise." Falco smiles softly.
"OKAY, everybirdie, let's keep moving. I am sure that if we keep heading WEST we will locate the Castle, or somewhere we will all recognize. We need to hurry, we have to find Sugar, Cori, Pepper, Gus, Snowflake and Cydney."
With much murmuring the tired, wet, scared birdies follow Jesse as he begins to walk towards the West. The group climbs a small hill, coming to rest at the top for a moment. As they reach the summit, the wind fades, the clouds part, and once more the sky shines blue, and golden with the warm sunshine.

Sure hope mom is feeling better ! Did you two ever find her bug ? Give it a good nip ?

It's a really wet pouring rain kind of day here ! Nice to sleep to, but that's about it ! Mom doesn't want to go to school in it and dad is supposed to go into the city later to do a class - he's hoping it's over by then.

When mom gets home, she wants to clean my cage :( She just doesn't appreciate good art ! My new design concept is crumple up all the paper you can find and stuff it in your food and water bowls ! Clever huh ?

In the meantime, you have a great Thursday :) love Cookie

  HELLO FROM LITTLE LUCY
Hi Oatie,
How's Makana doing? I hope she likes you and her new home. Well, my Daddy's been home for a week now, and he's been sick over half of that time. He is very nauseous. So he spends a great deal of the time in bed. Mommy thinks it's the new medication that the doctor put him on after taking him off the IV's. He had another MRI this past Monday and has three doctors' appointments next week. This is his life...poor Daddy. All he wants to do is get better. That's what we are all hoping for.

My frother, Finnegan had a great time last weekend at the Pet Expo. He got to visit with so many people, and almost all of them wanted to hold him. Mommy entered my little fister, Dolly in two contests, a costume contest and a talent contest. She should have won both! But those judges are so predjudiced in favor of dogs. Anyway, Mommy put a little tiny pink fringe around Dolly's best collar and she looked SOOO cute it! She was the only bird entered in the costume contest, but the judges picked the two little girls and their dog and cat who belonged to the Emcee. The dog was wearing a onesie (that babies wear) and the cat was in a stroller.) Do you think that there was some favoritism shown there?? However, Dolly did place 3rd in the talent contest, after a dog that howled and a puppy that didn't do anything, but looked cute. Dolly played dead in Mommy's hand, laying on her back. Then she said "hello" to everyone a couple of times and danced! Eveyone thought that those dogs didn't stand a chance. But once again the judges' predjuice showed. I hope that my Mommy doesn't sound like a poor sport, but she wants new judges next year, ones that love birdies.
Love and Big Hugs,
Your Friend, Little Miss Lucy♥

  Hi Oatie
Hi, long time no blog, but now i'm back...for a while at least! What's going on on BC & what's new?
Mum just posted some pics of some of her stuff. It's just a very small selection of what she's been making. Not so many birds anymore, but she really loves to make Barbie clothes & has a whole big bag full of it. She's been to quite a few markets & her stuff is ever so popular. Tomorrow she's going to one again. It's called "our love market" & all the things on sale have to be made with love, so mum thought that's perfect for her.
Hope you're well & your family is too.

Good news...Daddy has actually felt a bit better the past two days. We are anxiously awaiting "our" swans' eggs to hatch and to see the little cygnets again. We've had one batch of goslings hatch and another single baby, although we haven't seen the single in a few days. We hope it's ok. What flowers are actually good to eat for us birdies?   HI OATIE!!!
You are quite a pretty Quaker...Thanks for stopping by...V4U..Today the campaign blog I will talk more about Cockatiel food and supplements....Millet sprays are very popular and easily prepared. Simply immerse one or two sprays for each pair of cockatiels, i a bowl of warm water for a day, then remove them and wash them thoroughly under running water from the tap, transferring them to a colander if necessary. The cockatiels normally accept the soaked millet greedily, eating all the kernels after a few hours, but always remove the sprays after a day, otherwise they are likely to turn moldy and can threaten the cockatiels' health. You also can feed them dry to your cockatiel.Cockatiels also benefit from a regular supply of green food. This is a valuable source of Vitamin A, which is usually deficient in seed..Suitable green foods they like is Meadow Grass, Spinach or Beet leaves, Canary seed grass and Chickweed...Cuttlefish bone, Grit and Iodine is important in their diet..Cuttlefish bone is a vital part of the diet of the adult cockatiel because its main ingredient is calcium. You may also want to provide a calcium block...Budgerigar grit is suitable for cockatiels it can provide valuable minerals, and oyster shell, in particular, dissolves quite readily in the cockatiel's digestive system, compared with relatively insoluble mineralized grit.Pet shop also sell iodine blocks that you simply fix in place in the cage. They provide the iodine required by the thyroid glands in the neck that influence the cockatiel's metabolism and overall level of activity.Seed is low in iodine.....Hope you are having a great Thursday...Birdie wings hugs to you.....Sam :o)

Wow, a package for me? I know I'll love it! Thanks so much. You know, I'm never ever scared of mom. She does look different without her glasses on, but that's okay with me. I love her anyway. She knows I do, too! Hope you are having a good spring there, Oatie. It sounds like Mom is planting away. My mom has decided to stick with flowers only from now on, since the bunnies, ground hogs, and raccoons get the veggies first. Of course, she says that, but we know she'll end up planting at least a few tomatoes, peppers, and such. It just wouldn't be summer without fresh veggies. Hope you are having a good day. I'll share the anise with Peppino, okay? Hugs, Willie

  HI OATIE
before Cori begins her speech Boo Boo dusts her off and then wishes all the birds a wonderful day.
found mostly in the old world, the Kingfisher is a bright jewel of a bird who skims over the water in a flash of blue and orange, dicing for small fish, crayfish, frogs and insects.its eyes have oval lenses enabling it to see well in the air as well as underwater. wearing the Kingfishers feathers was believed to heighten the wearers beauty.in britton it was believed the bird could glow in the dark. it was believed that the Kingfisher was originally a dull colored bird but Noah releases the Kingfisher from his arc in order to find land. after being confined for so long the bird flew up to the sky until it took on the blue color of the heavens. then it flew so close to the sun its breast was scorched so it was forced to dive into the water below . at this point it remembered it was suppose to find land and went in search of the ark but could no longer find it since Noah had long since landed on Mt Arafat. this is why the Kingfisher continues to this day flying along rivers calling out to Noah. it was also believed that upon death the birds did not decay so their bodies were placed among clothes to preserve them. whoever owned dead Kingfisher would be granted grace and loveliness by wearing its feathers. plucking feathers from a Kingfisher and throwing them in water, then retrieving only the feathers that floated and stroking a loved one with them was considered a powerful love talismans. dead Kingfishers hung up by their beaks with a thread foretold the direction the wind would blow by which direction their breast faced.
RENEGE AFFIRM, AND TURN THEIR HALEYCON BEAKS
WITH EVERY GALE AND VARY OF THEIR MASTERS…..shakespeare
it is amazing how birds are able to survive despite man! the amazon and green Kingfishers are found from Mexico to Argentina and are stable at about 500,000 in population.

  hi OATIE
today i would like to talk about the BIRD MAN OF ALCATRAZ. in 1963, Robert F Stroud, murderer of two men died after spending 54 years in solitary confinement. no man in the history of the world ever spent more time alone. were it not for his deep intelligence and love for birds, Stroud would have converted to a human vegetable, but instead became one of the worlds greatest bird pathologists. in an article in the respected Scientific American, the author states that Stroud learned more about bird diseases than any other amateur investigator. a book THE BIRDMAN OF ALCATREZ and a movie of the same name starring Burt Lncaster, made stroud's genius for curing sick birds world renowned. of course it did not gain freedom for Stroud. one of the men he killed happened to be a prison guard. Strouds book was first published in 1943 and the only major change in the treatment of birds since then has been the introduction of antibiotics such as Terramycin, aureomycin and others in the treatment of bird diseases. antibiotics require a doctors prescription and Strouds treatments do not as they are more of a homeopathic treatment but would require a compounding pharmacist to make them up since some of the ingredients might be hard to obtain today. treating a birds disease is in recognizing what the disease is and what caused it. there is still no other book in the world, in any language which can help laymen more in treating bird diseases than the book Strouds digest on the disease of birds.

  HI OATIE
Named for the striking yellow tufts that grow above its eyes during breeding season, the tufted puffin is one of the most loved birds in North America. The tufted puffin’s striking breeding season coloration has earned it such names as “sea parrot” and “clown of the sea.” With its short wings that allow it to swim expertly underwater, the tufted puffin dives for prey along coasts of California, Oregon, and Washington where populations of this seabird, as well as in Japan, are in trouble, as lack of prey, climate change, fishing, oil spills, and other dangers take their toll. Tufted puffins are able to dive up to 60 meters to catch small fish like sardines, herring, and anchovy and may make as many as 360 dives per day when foraging to feed their chicks. Breeding populations of tufted puffins in California, Oregon, and Washington have declined by 85 to 90 percent in the last three decades, from more than 30,000 birds to no more than 4000 today. Most of these remaining puffins are in Washington. Oregon and California are each estimated to have breeding populations of less than 300 birds. The population in Japan is down to ten breeding pairs. Tufted puffins are still numerous in Alaska and British Columbia. But the more southern populations that are in steep decline encompass a significant portion of the species’ historic range and contain genetic diversity that is important to maintain if the species is to persist in the long-term, particularly with impacts from climate change escalating. humans are the cause of the tufted puffin’s plight. Climate change, driven by our burning of fossil fuels, is altering temperatures and circulation patterns of our oceans, disrupting the food web and making it harder for puffins to forage and to successfully reproduce. Puffins are also caught as bycatch in commercial fishing nets, drowning underwater when they cannot surface for air.
Diving for food and roosting on the surface of the water makes the tufted puffin highly vulnerable to impacts from oil spills. A single oil spill can wipe out entire breeding colonies. In fact, in 1991, the Tenyo Maru oil spill off the coast of Washington killed about 10 percent of the state’s population of tufted puffins. Similarly, the Exxon Valdez spill was responsible for the death of up to 13,000 Alaskan tufted puffins in 1989.
To compound the problem, tufted puffins generally return to the same colony each year and even if any birds were tempted to stray, breeding colonies in the contiguous United States are physically separated from other breeding colonies to the north. This has made recovery very difficult as population numbers dwindle. In recent years,

people have always been fascinated by the huge migrating flocks of Cranes. it was believed that Cranes carried small birds on their backs during their migratory travels over large bodies of water. it was believed the reason the Crances did this was that they enjoyed listening to the songs of the small birds.. this belief was held by the egyptians, the bedouins and the the Crow indians.the arawak indians pf venezuela believed tobacco was brought to them by a hummingbird who stole it from triniada and rode on the back of a crane to bring it to south america. it was believed that cranes swallowed stones to keep the wind from blowing them off course during their long migratory flights. upon arrival they would expel the stones. the stones were said to hold magical powers. if one held the stone they would find gold. also the stones were said to warn of impending danger.

The Whooping Crane is named for its call, which can be heard over great distances thanks to the bird’s extra-long trachea, which coils around its breastbone twice like a French horn. Like other cranes, the Whooper is noisy; the word “crane” comes from the Anglo-Saxon "cran," which means "to cry out."
The tallest flying bird in North America, Whooping Cranes measure up to five feet tall with a seven-to eight-foot wingspan. The species also has another distinction: It is the rarest crane in the world. Several decades ago, it almost disappeared forever due to habitat loss and hunting.
Still extremely rare, Whooping Cranes are on the WatchList and protected as an endangered species. Sadly, up to one-quarter of all Whoopers are shot and killed.
Whooping Cranes are one of our country’s most majestic birds—and also one of our most endangered. Though the species once ranged throughout the Great Plains and Gulf Coast regions, the Whooping Crane population was decimated by hunting and habitat loss, and only 16 birds remained in 1941.
Today, a major captive-breeding effort has helped the population rebound to nearly 600 individuals. But these birds are still under threat. A mated pair of Whooping Cranes was recently shot at a crawfish pond in Louisiana. Sadly, both have died from their injuries. Still worse, this is not unusual: Nearly one-quarter of all Whooping Crane deaths are caused by illegal shooting.
Whooping Cranes deserve the full protection of the law.

Boo Boo places an ice bag on Coris head before todays speech. they both had a little too much st paddys day celebrating yesterday.

a very common superstition was that storks deliver newborn babies. this superstition was found amend europeans and even the sioux indians. the great flocks of storks flying north from africa at the beginning os spring created an association in peoples minds with fertility. also the considerable size of the stork could easily carry a newborn human. it was also believed that the storks caring nature extended to its own parents as well and in ancient rome there was a law requiring citizens to care for their elders known as lex ciconia, or stork law. it was believed that storks lived to a ripe old age and in china, storks were believed to carry the human soul, particularly those of brave soldiers up to heaven. in greece if a woman befriended a stork it would one day return and lay a jewel at her feet in token of affection. storks were thought to be very strict with their own babies and would often peck them until they bled but then could miraculously heal them instantly with a lick of their tongue. this is why the reddish pink marks found on newborns eyelids is often referred to as stork bites. farmers in europe felt storks brought good luck and would place platforms on their roofs for storks to nest. if the storks left the farmers roof it was considered bad luck. the stork represent duty and gratitude.

  HI Oatie
Thank you for coming to Joey's blog in loving memory and for making him BOTD. As most of you know, I was in Kelowna with Chicklet for her first vet visit on Jan. 30th, what was our 22nd anniversary. That evening, as we drove through the city, huge red neon letters lit up the night sky. They simply spelled, JOEY. I smiled. It was a restaurant, but it had a very special meaning to me as that was a very special day as Joey was an incredible bird. Our entire flock is still adjusting to his loss and Cleo and Poppy especially miss their beloved leader. On the bird room wall, I have a picture of him playing with one of his toys and the sweet expression on his face and the life-like quality of the photo makes it appear that he will step out of the frame at any moment. To this day, the 'tiels will sit on the top of the arch and just stare at that picture. I can just about imagine what they are thinking:) Joey had such a larger than life personality and he lived it with such love and passion. To the very end, he gave his all and wanted to be here with us for as long as he could. He had such love for all of us and that larger than life personality he had will effect us all for the rest of our lives. In a unique way, it is as if he is still here with us somehow. I think that is his legacy.

I miss him dearly. Thank you for remembering such a wonderful life!

Much love,

Joey's momma, Ellen

Boo Boo and Cori have kegs of green beer and start filling up frosty mugs and handing them out to all their friends.

St. Patrick's day is a feast celebrated yearly on March 17 (except when it lands on Catholic spiritual holidays). St. Patrick, aka St. Paddy, is the patron saint of Ireland and is celebrated by wearing green, drinking green beer (usually Guiness, but sometimes substituted with Irish whiskey or Baileys Irish cream), and eating Irish food. Traditionally, those who don't wear green are pinched on St. Patrick's day.

Cori starts playing an irish tune on her fiddle as Boo Boo , wearing heavy boots, does some Irish step dancing before Cori begins her speech for today:

An irish saint, similar to /saint francis of assisi called /st Kevin(498-618) was said to prefer the company of animals over humans and was said to have a mystical command over them. once when he was praying during lent, a blackbird landed on his outstretched hand and laid an egg there. St Kevin then remained perfectly still until the egg had hatched- an illustration of the saints virtuous patience and gentleness.
there is a saying from the county meath in ireland "when the blackbird sings before christmas, she will cry before Candlemas" This meant if the blackbird started signing before its usual time of early to mid february a cold spell will occur before february 2, when the rite of candlemas is observed. in germany it was thought a blackbird kept caged in a house offered protection against lightning.

  HI OATIE
thankyou for helping me win the honor of BOTD!

Boo Boo tosses 4 leaf clovers out to the bird e club audience before Cori begins her speech.

What is “The Ideas of March?” The Romans called March 15th “The Ides of March.” Originally, the “ideas” referred to the full moon.Ides were days of settling debts

What does “Beware the Ides of March” mean? It means, be aware of impending danger.

The saying, “Beware the Ides of March” came from William Shakespeare’s play, Julius Caesar. In the play, a soothsayer says “Beware the Ideas of March” to Julius Caesar to warn him that this was to be his assassination day.

Julius Caesar was assassinated on March 15, 44BC by Roman Senators who were concerned that he had too much power. Rome was a Republic and these Roman Senators did not want anyone to disrupt what they had built. However, after Julius Caesar’s assassination, Rome was saddened by his death. The senators were banished and the republic was never restored to its previous glory.

“Beware the Ides of March” is now a proverb, superstition and a phrase that warns of impending danger and unfortunate events.

A proverb is a saying that contains advice or accepted truth. They are passed down through generations. Common proverbs are; “Look before you leap,” “don’t count your chickens before they hatch” and “don’t put all your eggs in one basket.”

A superstition is a belief that a particular thing, event or circumstance holds some kind of significance that something going to happen (bad or good) even though it’s not based on knowledge or reason. This belief can be based on fear, ignorance, trust in magic, coincidence, or a prior experience with a similar situation. Some common superstitions are; breaking a mirror can cause bad luck, finding a 4-leaf clover can bring good luck, stepping on a crack in the sidewalk can “break your mother’s back” or cause bad luck, the number 13 can bring you bad luck, and finding a string on your person means your going to get a letter.

BooBoo does a short irish jig before Coris speech.
the irish peasants attached great importance to the first verse of St John gospel and maintain that when a cock crows in the morning he is repeating verse 1-14 and if we understood the language of animals and birds we would often hear them quoting the same verses.

a flight of rooks over an army foretells defeat, if over a house or people when driving or walking , death ail follow.

if a hen crows on the roost it is a sure sign that fairies have struck it and its head must be cut off and flung on the ground or one of the family will die before the year is out.

never disturb swallows where ever they may build and neither remove or destroy their nests for they are wise birds and will mark your conduct either with punishment or favor.

if you hear a cuckoo on the right you will have luck all the year after.

it is very lucky for a hen and her chickens to stray into your house

if anyone in the house is sick and a cock crows with his head to the fire recovery is expected. if he crows with his head to the door then death be certain.

in whatever quarter you are looking when you first hear the cockoo in the season, you will be traveling in that direction before the year is over.

if a cock comes to the threshold and crows you may expect visitors

the cuttings of your hair must never be thrown where birds can find them or they will use your head to build nests and you will have headaches all the year after.

BEWARE OF SPEAKING ILL OF FAIRIES ON FRIDAY OR THEY WILL WORK EVIL ON YOU IF OFFENDED.

HAPPY TGIF DAY

MORE IRISH FOLKLORE:
there is no irish name for the Magpie. it is generally called Francagh, a Frenchman, though no one really knows why. many odd tales are told of this bird, rising from its quaint ways of its cunning and habits of petty larceny. it is not considered evil, though to meet one alone in the morning when going on a journey is considered a evil omen, but to meet more than one magpie beacons good fortune according to this old rhyme:
ONE FOR SORROW
TWO FOR MIRTH
THREE FOR MARRIAGE
FOUR FOR BIRTH
FIVE FOR HEAVEN
SIX FOR HELL
SEVEN's THE DEVILS his own self
EIGHT FOR A WISH
NINE FOR A KISS
TEN FOR A SURPRISE you should be careful not to miss
ELEVEN FOR HEALTH
TWELVE FOR WEALTH
THIRTEEN BEWARE its the devil himself
another similar poem is:
ONE FOR SORROW
TWO FOR JOY
THREE FOR A GIRL
FOUR FOR A BOY
FIVE FOR SILVER
SIX FOR GOLD
SEVEN FOR A SECRET NEVER TO BE TOLD
seeing three Magpies on the left hand, when on a journey is unlucky, but two on the right hand is a good omen
in scotland it was believed that the bird held a drop of the devil under its tongue

A SINGLE MAGPIE IN SPRING FOUL WEATHER WILL BRING from the birds habit of feeding together only in fine weather.
if you see a solitary Magpie you can ward off bad luck by spitting over your shoulder three times doffing your hat and saying GOOD MORNING MR MAGPIE, HOW ARE YOU THIS FINE DAY or GOOD DAY, HOW IS YOUR WIFE? in hopes the Magpies mate is hiding nearby to turn your sorrow into joy.

  Hi Oatie
an astonishing large and varied belief of folklore has grown up around birds on one hand man feels a strong connection to birds because they build nests in his garden or on the eaves of his home. on the other hand their freedom of flight to parts unknown has always fascinated man. migration was not fully understood before the 18th century.odd tales arose from these migrations which i have previously mentioned a few of. since St Paddys day is around the corner we thought for the next few days we would talk about irish folklore involving birds.
the Cuckoo was thought to turn into a Hawk before departing for its winter destinations. it is very unlucky to kill a Cockoo or break its eggs because a Cuckoo brings with it fine weather. the first time you hear a Cuckoo look down at your feet. if a hair is laying there you will live to comb your grey locks at an old age. a poem also accompanies the Cuckoo:
if a cuckoo sits on a bare throne
you may del your cow and buy corn
but if she sits on a green bough you may sell your corn and buy a cow.

it is most unlucky to kill a Robin Redbreast. the Robin is Gods own bird, sacred and holy and held in the highest esteem. it is believed the Robin plucked out a thorn piercing Christs brow on the cross and in so doing his breast was covered and dyed red in his blood.the Robin has since remained a sacred and blessed sign to preserve it from harm and make it beloved of all men.

  Hi Oatie
You think your morning commute’s a beast? Try traversing the continent twice a year ... under your own steam.

Billions of birds do just that, migrating between warm winter climes and breeding grounds, often in the far North. And thanks to a growing human footprint, migratory birds face unprecedented threats with every journey.

At least 40 percent of all bird species are migratory. In North America more than 300 bird species migrate. Here are just a few amazing facts about the planet's migratory marvels:

High flyers — Bar-headed geese routinely traverse the Indian Himalayas, reaching altitudes of nearly 30,000 feet.
Far flyers — Arctic Terns are the globetrotting champs. Their annual round-trip transit amounts to nearly 50,000 miles per year.
Fast flyers — Great Snipes routinely maintain speeds of 60 mph or more on their 4200-mile migrations. And that’s without tailwinds.
Tireless flyers — the Bar-tailed Godwit exhibits world spanning feats of non-stop flight, able to cover 7,000 miles across the central Pacific without food or rest.
Fat flyers — feats of migration take a lot of calories, and birds often gorge themselves in preparation for the journey. Blackpoll Warblers, for instance, nearly double their body weight before embarking on their nonstop 2300-mile trip.
Navigating a Gauntlet of Death

Migrating birds face a host of natural dangers. Many die along the way. And ever-greater numbers are succumbing to unnatural dangers as well — habitat loss, tall buildings, pollution and climate change. For instance, in this country alone, window strikes are estimated to kill upwards of a billion birds every year.

“Earth provides enough to satisfy every man's needs, but not every man's greed.”

  HI OATIE
A FEW RANDOM BUT INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT BIRDS:
1)THE SEXIEST PARROTS HAVE FLOURESCENT FEATHERS. BOTH MALES AND FEMALES ARE ATTRACTED TO THOSE THAT HAVE THE BRIGHTLY COLORED PLUMAGE, WHICH GLOWS BY ABSORBING ULTRA VIOLET LIGHT. HUMANS CANT SEE IT BUT THE PARROTS SURE DO.
MALE BLUE-TITS THAT HAVE RANDOM YELLOW FEATHERS ON THEIR BREAST TEND TO BE BETTR PROVIDERS FOR THEIR CHICKS SO FEMALES CHOOSE THEM ABOVE OTHER MALES
SISKINS THAT HAVE A LARGER BLACK PATCH ON THEIR CHEST SIGNAL STATUS WITHIN THE COMMUNITY AND ALSO SHOW THEY ARE HUNGRIER THAN OTHER SISKINS SO MORE FOOD IS SHARED WITH THEM.
2)THE KEA A DISTANT RELATIVE OF THE PARROT HAS A RUBBER FETISH AND WILL EAT THE WINSHIELD WIPERS ON CARS AND HANG ONTO THE WIPERS EVEN IF THE CAR IS MOVING WHILE THEY CHOMP AWAY.
3)HUMMINGBIRDS CONSUME THEIR ENTIRE BODY WEIGHT A DAY TO PROVIDE FOR THEIR HIGH ENERGY LEVELS
4)THE HOATZIN, A VENEZUELAN BIRD, HAS A STOMACH SIMILIAR TO A COW. ITS FOOD FERMENTS INSIDE IT PRODUCING A AROMA MUCH LIKE COW DUNG. HENCE THE NICKNAME STINKBIRD.
5)PENGUINS ARE NATURES SUPER-POOPERS: CHINSTRAP AND ADELIE PENGUINS POINT THEIR REAR ENDS OUT OF THEIR NEST AND FIRE THEIR POO INTO THE AIR WITH SUCH FORCE IT LANDS 16 INCHES AWAY
6)VULTURES FEELING THREATENED WILL VOMIT VIOLENTLY IN THE DIRECTIONS OF THEIR ATTACKERS. THIS IS DONE OUT OF FEAR AND FOR SURVIVAL BECAUSE BY LOSING PART OF THEIR BODY WEIGHT THEY WILL BE ABLE TO TAKE TO THE AIR AND ESCAPE MUCH MORE QUICKLY. THE VOMIT ITSWLF IS SO FOUL WILL ALSO DISTRACT THE PREDATOR AND POSSIBLY KILL THEM
7)BIRDS CAN GET DRUNK
IN 2005 A LARGE FLOCK OF CEDAR WAXWINGS FLEW INTO THE GLASS WINDOWS OF A BUILDING. THE 100'S OF WAXWINGS WERE INTOXICATED ON HOLLY BERRIES. THE SEYCHELLES BLUE PIGEON FEEDS ON FERMENTED INDIAN ALMONDS AND BECOME SO INEBRIATED THEY CANT FLY FOR HOURS AFTERWARDS.

BIRDS WILL BAND TOGETHER TO SING TRIUMPHANT SONGS WHEN THEY HAVE WON A TERRITORIAL BATTLE. THE BOUBOU WILL WILL PERFORM DISTINCTIVE DUETS TO SIGNAL THEIR VICTORIES.. THIS ALERTS OTHER BOUBOUS THAT THE COAST IS NOW CLEAR AND ALSO WARNS OFF OTHER POTENTIAL INVADERS.
SCIENTISTS HAVE FOUND THAT BIRDS WITH A LARGE .SONG REPERTOIRE ALSO HAVE LARGER SPLEENS, WHICH IN TURN IS LINKED TO THE QUALITY OF THE BIRDS IMMUNE SYSTEM. FEMALE BIRDS LIKE THE GREAT REED WARBLER MATING WITH THE MALES WITH THE BIGGEST SONG BOOK HAVE OFF SPRING THAT TEND TO SURVIVE LONGER
MALE CANARAIES CAN DRIVE FEMALES WILD WITH THEIR SPECTACULAR RAPID FIRE TRILLING VIBRATING NOTES 16 TIMES PER SECOND. FEMALES HEARING THIS IMMEDIATELY ADOPT THE POSTURE THAT SIGNALS THEY ARE READY FOR SEX.
THE MALE WOODPECKER DOESNT SING WELL SO INSTEAD HE USES HIS HEAD DRUMMING ON ANY SURFACE THAT RESONATES AND WILL ATTRACT MATES.
THE BLUEJAY IMMIATES THE RED TAILED HAWK PERFECTLY TO WARN OTHERS ITS AROUND
THE BURROWING OWL MAKES THE EXACT SOUND OF A RATTLESNAKE TO WARN PREDATORS AWAY FROM ITS UNDERGROUND BURROW.
THE MALE RUFFED GROUSE MOUNTS A FALLEN LOG OR LARGE ROCK AND BEATS HIS WINGS AGAINST THE AIR CREATING A DRUMMING SOUND TO ATTRACT MATES.

  Hi Oatie
Boo Boo clears her throat and imitates perfectly the sound of the landline ringing at home. she then pushes Cori onto the stage for more on the speech about bird songs:
Owls hoot less when it rains since wet weather acts as a damper on the acoustics within woodlands and forests. Owl calls are 70 times more likely to be heard when it is dry outside.
the male Loon has a distinctive loud yodel that is a clear threat to other birds. a scientist once translated it as "come near me and i will pull all your feathers out:! Loons radically change their tunes when they move to a new home apparently to make sure they sound different than the birds already living there and it is a signal they are not to be messed ith.
Male Bronzed-Winged Jacanas live in a harem ruled by one female. all the birds start yelling when plying for her attention.
like musical instruments different shaped beaks make different shaped sounds. heavy beaks designed to crush seeds make deeper less complicated sounds than slim beaks designed to snatch insects heavy beaks can't catch the same range or trill as fast as those with smaller beaks.
the deepest voiced voiced bird is the Cassowary which is the second largest bird next to the ostrich. it uses low frequency infra-sound used by only one other land lving animal, the Elephant. its call can be pitched as low as 23 Hertz, the bottom range humans can hear.
the black-coped chickadee uses a graded system of warning cries. the :seer: sound warns of predators from Hawks and Owls and warns other birds to take cover. a full "chickadee" warns of a resting predator such as an Owl perched near by. Nuthatches and small Woodpeckers recognize this sound and join groups of Chickadees to flock together and crowd the predator until it flies away. the most serious call warns of the Pygmy Owl which Chickadees find hard to evade. their call then sounds like" chick-a-dee-dee-dee-dee" which warns the flocks to scatter.
Cori takes a bow and Boo Boo takes a towel and wraps it around Coris neck and leads her off of the stage.
