 Shortly after we were blessed with Bird-Bird, our young Cockatiel, a woman found me on Craigslist with an older Cockatiel she was re-homing. I told her that I'd already found a Cockatiel and wasn't really looking. It turns out that her son had gotten this Cockatiel when he was 7 and was now 16 and no longer interested in having a bird. It broke my heart to think of, but she just wanted her son's bird to go to a good home and she wanted us to have the bird for free- which, God Bless Her, included cage, toys, food & water dishes, food, treats, cage cozy (a ton of bird stuff) and bird... and how would you say "no" to that? We were not sure of how friendly this bird would be or if he would bite or what. The woman had said he used to sit on her son's shoulder while he played piano and used to let them scratch his neck, but hadn't let them do so in a long while. When I finally got to meet him I saw the striped tail-feathers and realized 'he' was a 'she.' She really didn't want anyone near her or to touch her when we first got her home and it was very understandable. She'd known only one boy her whole life and now she had to learn to deal with a new place and new people and a young child all over again. She took to my husband very well and within the month began 'asking' to be scratched and petted. She is an easily annoyed bird, but never nips to harm or behaves meanly toward anyone. She is very sweet and quite the character- a royal tiel if ever there was one. Because of her, my husband and I both now have Cockatiel owners. :)
