 On May 17, 2013 Shaggy died in my hand at 9:20 PM. He's in no pain any longer.
I used to be a therapy bird at The Arbors, an Alzheimer's home. I ended up getting picked on and Char came to check on the birds and there I was on the bottom of the aviary with two finches. She took me and discovered I had a broken leg and wing. I still cannot fly at all but I'm well loved.. |

Hi there Shaggy. How is everybirdie? Things are fine here. Yeah, our little Lady Gouldian's broken wing could not have been fixed. It was broken at the shoulder. When we got her freed from the cage, we could just tell she wasn't going to make it so we put her in a hospital cage with a blanket and a warm light. After she died I checked the wing where she had gotten caught in the cage and it was completely snapped at the shoulder. There would have been no way to set it. And she was old. At least she died comfortably and peacefully. Its always sad when we lose one of the birds. My wife wants to set up the Gouldians again for breeding, but the breeding season window is fast disappearing. We need a female as the female/males left in the cage are brothers and sisters. So I was on the look out for a female from another breeder. But the time is going, so it will have to wait until next year.

Wow, that sounds quite like the big brawl between the birdies. Yikes! Hope everything is settled down. The worse thing that happened here was I think 3 or 4 years ago when Zena flew over onto Tessa's cage and Tessa bit one of her toes off. Blood everywhere. We had to take Zena to the avian vet, not because of the bleeding, but because she was in pain and cut back on her eating. So she got some antibiotics and pain meds and she was back to normal in no time. You think Zena stays off Tessa's cage now? Captain Ceasaur here and I am so sorry to hear your not feeling well and I hope you get better real soon.I am glad the rest of your flock can go because First Mate SamIAM has a wonderful adventure planned for the Pearl. Mom has been coughinng like crazy and has been up the last couple of nights with coughing and during the day with this large noisy flock mom can not sleep at all. Let me tell you she is just falling apart. Her head is pounding and she just feels lousy but hopefully this will not last long and she will bounce back ok.?Her whole body has the chills. Mom hs been drinking OJ and drinking chicken noodle soup even tho she does not have an appetite. Please get better and I hope your mom and dad get better to.

Hope you had a nice Thanksgiving
We just got back from Boston for our annual get-together with family just outside of Boston. Good to get away but good to get back too. Can't pick up Teddie and Babette until tomorrow morning (our Pembroke Welsh Corgis) as we got back too late to get them from the kennel. My son-in-law had to work Friday so he did not join us so, Steve took care of everybirdie while we were away.

rainy day
My wife is busy sweeping and cleaning around the cages and I get to have some time off before heading out to an Agility Trial with Babette, our Pembroke Welsh Corgi. (actually we have two, but Theadora is not ready for competition quite yet).
It has been pouring rain all morning and in spite of the rain, I potted up six giant amayrillis for Christmas gifts. Potting them up now should get them ready in time. At least I get the green growth going before I hand them over.
I've simplified bird care arrangments for when we need to go away. For a long week-end the finches can get by with full seed cups so they only need their water tubes checked. So they skip their usual breakfast of sprouts, broccoli, carrots and sugar snap peas. The hookbills (Tessa, Zena, Zachary, Zelda and Zorro) get birdie bread but I have the caretakers skip the veggies and I just make sure their seed cups are filled as well. This works out quite well even over our Thanksgiving travels where we are away for 4 days. Of course, they really dive into those veggies when we get back! Btw, Zelda and Zorro don't have a page here. Maybe I'll set one up over the Winter. They are blue colored parrotlets and a bonded pair so they live in one cage.

Glad to hear of your safe arrival
Hi gang. Thanks for you post on the Dad of All the Birds page. Glad to hear you made it safe and sound to Utah. It must have been tough for Shaggy to be in the cold. I hope he is okay.
We had our first freeze of the season this morning. It got down to 27 degrees. All the plants are inside except for some boxwood bonsai and the fig trees.They can tolerate the colder weather for a while longer. The figs need to lose their leaves before I can bring them in to a cellar where it stays in the 40's. The budgies are very happy to have their plants back in the 'plant room' and when I come in each morning to check on the plants they supervise any watering I have to do.
