Really cold here today. Got a fire going and mom has put a heater in our room. We are losing sooooo much heat from all our large windows and the parronts did not do the plastic thing on them this year----big mistake. But are room is cozy and can;t complain. How is your mamma feeling? We hope everybird is well and healthy and starting off the New Year happy and well even though cold. More precipitation for Monday, mom says oh joy....always makes the trip into work interesting. She should get a snow day and stay home with us. LOve and winghugs, Moggie

  Hi Sam
its really draining on mom when g-ma ends up in the hospital and mom has a hard time finding the energy to blog for us. good news though. its turns out g-ma had a urinary tract infection or UTI which can cause extreme confusion in elderly people. g-ma kept telling mom to stand in front of her so she could see her and mom said she was but g-ma was looking on the ceiling and talking to various friends she saw floating around there. after 2 days on iv fluid and antibiotics g-mss brain function came back and so the hospital is sending her back to assisted living.

i was a bad bird last night and broke the beak off of my robotic talking parrot. while mom was trying to fix it i pulled the eye out of my other robotic bird. the eye cant be fixed but mom did manage to fix the beak on the robotic parrot. it just doesn't move now but the bottom beak is still moving.

  Hi Sam
Welcome to the castle! For all the birds staying here with me this month, today we are going out on the lake in one of the yachts, we will party and have a good time.
It's 3 outside right now, and the dogs were even cold for their walk this morning. Poor furry things were holding up their feet! They won't wear boots, but they will wear sweaters, so mom thinks it was just their feet that were cold.
Mom has a few errands but if it doesn't warm up, they will wait for a warmer day. She finally got her Christmas Thank you cards out today and wrote them. It's about time, right? Also, her eyes aren't dilated today so she can read and write blogs much better than yesterday. I hope you are having a fun day and getting lots of attention and warm cuddles. Hugs, King Peppino

Hope your New Year's day was a fun one. Ours sure was! Mom had a bunch of people over, and we all love to show off for guests. As promised, here are some pics of the flower show at Phipps. I kept all the snowpeople pics on my page, they were all made of epiphytes, or air plants! There are also some on Falco's page and Willie's page. On Falco's page, there are also 2 shots of the new purse mom's daughter gave her, and the portrait that Lena painted of mom.
This morning at the center mom cleaned the raccoons and ground hogs and bats again. The good news is that one of the other volunteers came in to help her feed the bats, otherwise she would probably still be there!
I hope today brings you lots of good cuddles and scritches! Hugs, Peppino

i was having the best time playing with my toys tonight. mom says i was getting over stimulated because the next thing i know i gave mom a bone crushing thumb crunch. this made mom angry and she cried out ouch and threw a towel over me and put me in my carrier for time out. i screamed for 10 minutes straight before settling down and sweetly saying hello. mom then let me out and i ran over to bite her again but i saw the towel she had used to catch me before so i bited that instead and threw it off the bed. then i preened my feathers for awhile and mom said it was bed time and i sure was tired after all that playing.

Thanks so much for your ongoing support!
Today we are looking at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall. This is located in Oakland, almost right across from the Cathedral of Learning, on the opposite side from the museum. The 3rd and 4th pics show the building, it's pretty impressive! The 2nd pic shows one of the statues outside the door, and the first shows an activity that was going on for Veterans Day. Soldiers and Sailors Hall is the only military museum in the US honoring all branches of service to the country, and in all capacities: active duty, reserves, and guard. The historic building has exhibits covering all conflicts the US has been part of, including a huge area devoted to Gettysburg. There are unique exhibits there displaying personal mementos and stories, military artifacts, and uniforms. The building includes, besides the museum, a concert hall that seats about 2300 people, a ballroom, and the Hall of Valor. As you can see, Pittsburgh has a lot to offer when you come here.
Hope you are having a great day, see you tomorrow. Hugs, Peppino

  Hi Sam
It's nice to see you back!
Today we're going across the bridge to the Carnegie Museum where mom works sometimes. They have a Neapolitan Presepio which has statuary in it dating from 1730 to the late 1800s. It's a Pittsburgh tradition that this scene is set up in the Hall of Architecture every year, and people come from all over to see it. Mom was there a couple of weeks ago when tourists from Italy came. She stayed and listened for a few minutes to one of the ladies in the group tell the history of presepi, in Italian, but she had to leave to pick up a tour group. Anyway, the oldest figures are made of painted terra cotta, and the newer ones are like collectible dolls, in that they have porcelain hands, feet, and face, and the rest of them is linen over a wire armature, so they can be posed. In my fifth pic, all the angels are made like that. In the fourth pic is a mix of old and new figurines. The third pic shows a Turkish band, popular in Naples in the mid 1800s. The presepio shows a whole town, with some folks aware of the holy birth and others who are just going about their business. The second pic displays some of that. In the first pic, that is totally Neapolitan! The holy family are in an ancient temple setting, and it always has one broken pillar (as opposed to the traditional setting in a stable). The broken pillar signifies a break with the Old Testament and the start of the new. Mom forgot to get a pic of the sleeping shepherd. He is also important in this scene. He can signify one of 2 things: he's a sleepy shepherd who missed the angel's message, or he represents the rest of humanity that is still sleeping today. If you ever come to Pittsburgh during the Christmas season, be sure to see the presepio, and look for the dove and the fisherman. (The dove is in a different place every year, and the fisherman is one of the original pieces.)
We wish you the Merriest Christmas ever! Thanks for your votes, and see you tomorrow back at Phipps! Hugs, Peppino

  HI SAM
Parrot’s Night Before Christmas
by Cheryl Tamburri
T’was the night before Christmas, so much to do!
Not a creature was stirring not even the Too
The stockings were hung, the parrots were bathed,
To wrap the bird toys, my efforts enslaved.
The cages were covered, the birds all in bed,
While visions of almonds danced in their heads.
And mom in her bird shirt, dressed looking poor,
on hands and knees cleaning poop off the floor.
When out on the lawn there arose such a chatter!
we jumped up to see just what was the matter
we peered out the window, what now to endure!
A Macaw in a sleigh, pulled by tiny Conures!
A Scarlet, he was, in a jaunty red hat,
I thought to myself, Good Lord, look at that!
He flew off the sleigh, and into my room,
bringing foot toys and blocks and a raffia broom.
we gasped in pure wonder; and we love Santa too
‘Oh yes!’, said the Scarlet, ‘i love you!’
“They love and they play and to owners they chat,
How many folks have pets just like that?!”
The joy parrots bring you all through the year,
The ones without out homes that are equally dear,
They deserve affection and enrichment all year,
But tonight especially, in hearts hold them all near.
The wise old bird gave a nod and a wink;
After dropping off toys he was gone in a blink!
And we thought to ourselves, we are blessed, yes indeed;
and to people who take take rescue birds, and to fill all their needs
He flew to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And off they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim as they flew out of sight
Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!

love Cori and Boo Boo

  Hi Sam
.mom was reading something very interesting today. a group of scientists from the netherlands have developed a mushroom that eats only plastic. they developed this to try and take care of the huge amounts of discarded plastics floating around in giant floating piles in our oceans today. most of the discarded plastics are from the united states.. the scientists say it will be many years of testing before they can determine if the plastic eating mushroom would be edible by humans. since many plastics are now used in shampoos and makeup mom had a disturbing thought. as a young girl in the 50s she saw a movie called attack of the mushroom people. it was about a group of travelers who had been stranded on this island with no food. they found these delicious mushrooms that staved off their hunger but the more they ate the faster they actually turned into mushrooms themselves. mom was terrified to eat any mushrooms for fear she would turn into one. now she has to worry if the mushrooms will attack her face because of the plastic in the makeup or attach themselves to moms hair because of the plastic in the shampoo. what if the plastic eating mushrooms form a gang and liberate the poor mushrooms grown on mushroom farms because they aren't being treated humanely. at least mom feels some sense of hope that some are trying to get rid of the huge piles of plastic trash and maybe being a mushroom might not be such a bad deal.

Thanks for your votes and visits daily! I love hearing from everybirdie.
Yesterday we did everything Heinz, today we are moving to Frick. He was one of those robber baron guys, but he gave back some to the city. Not like Andrew Carnegie, who gave back a ton, but still...
Henry Clay Frick gave Pittsburgh Frick Park, a beautiful space in the eastern part of the city with tennis courts, many playgrounds, walking trails, a nature center, a running track, an exercise track, a bowling green, as well as many picnic pavilions. In my pics today, the fifth and sixth ones are of Frick Art museum, right across from the bowling greens of the park. The Museum isn't part of the park, though. It's a small museum with many beautiful paintings. In a neighboring block is Clayton, a Frick city mansion. One of the pics is the garage. A friend of mom's is curator of the cars. The mansion itself is huge, the rooms are incredible, there is great woodwork inside. Right now it's decked out for the holidays. I don't know if you can see it, but one of the pics shows the staircase draped in greens. There are tours conducted there when people request them.
I hope you are still enjoying your tour of Pittsburgh. I'm having fun bringing to you all the great areas of the city. Hope also that you are having a great day! Hugs, Peppino

Thanks for the votes every day! I really love hearing from you, too.
Before we leave the Strip, we have to visit St. Stanislaus Church, it's right in the center of things, there on Smallman Street! The first 2 pics in my gallery show one of the oldest churches in Pittsburgh, St. Stanislaus in the Strip. I thought while we were seeing churches, we could go back to Oakland and see St. Paul's Cathedral, the next 2 pics in my gallery. This is the biggest Catholic church in the area. The last 2 new pics are of East Liberty Presbyterian Church, built by the Mellons in the 1800s. The people in Pittsburgh at the time called it Mellon's Fire Escape! Maybe it was, who knows? Today at that church, there are organ recitals every week, and Taize music some evenings. If you don't know the Taize stuff, you should google it and listen to a piece or 2, it's beautiful singing.
So, tomorrow we will go back to Oakland to see other things, including Heinz Chapel.
You may have noted Heinz field, Heinz History museum, and now Heinz chapel; what's that all about? We'll talk more tomorrow! Hope you have a spectacular day. Hugs, Peppino

Thanks for your ongoing support!
Today I posted one more pic of PennMac, the cheese counter! It is as popular as the meat counter, and always crowded.
Next, while we are in the Strip District, we have to visit the Heinz History Center. It's in the heart of the Strip District, and houses Pittsburgh history, including a trolley. They have traveling exhibits there, too. They are doing a Heinz exhibit right now though, featuring Heinz ketchup and pickles, haha. The first pic is one of an evaluation of antiques they do at the history center each August. From what the people bring in to be assessed, they film 10 to 12 episodes of Hidden Treasures, a TV show kind of like Antiques Roadshow, but with all Pittsburghers and their stuff. Some of it is quite valuable.
We probably should leave the Strip soon, so mom doesn't end up buying a lot of stuff. Some of the stores, like Wholey's fish market, are unique and wonderful to visit!
See you tomorrow with another installment of Pittsburgh stuff. Hope you are having a great day! Hugs, Peppino

  Hi Sam
Thank you for your daily visits and votes!
Today we are visiting another area of Pittsburgh which used to be little known, but now is pretty much known to any tourist who comes here. It's the Strip District. No, people don't strip to go there, it's a strip along the Allegheny River very close to town. It used to be a large warehouse district where greengrocers, butchers, and other merchants went early in the day (think 3AM) to get fresh supplies for their stores. The public could also go there and shop. In mom's family, they went in the fall to get whole pigs for sausages and crates of grapes for wine. Over time, as more of the public went there to shop for goods, it became specialized into ethnic shopping areas. There were stores like the Pennsylvania Macaroni company, catering to Italians, Stamboolis, catering to near eastern groups, Greek and Asian markets, etc. Today, the strip has become more genteel, so to speak. There are no longer hucksters in the streets, and lots of the big warehouses are now art galleries, bars, dance clubs, or broken into groups of smaller shops, like the Pittsburgh Public Market.
The oldest stores, like PennMac (Mom's favorite), Wholey's Fish market, and a few others are still up and thriving, but smaller markets, like the biscotti company are doing well too. They have even started sidewalk cafes in the strip for the summer trade. It retains some of its old flavor, though, which makes it still a great place to walk and shop.
Have a wonderful day, don't forget to give out kissies for those scritches. Hugs, Peppino

Thanks for your ongoing support, I appreciate each vote.
Today we are going back downtown to the Cultural District. It's a few blocks of theaters and art galleries in the heart of the city. The 4th and 5th pics in my gallery are mom's favorite site; that's Benedum Center, where mom goes to the opera! The Benedum also houses the Civic Light Opera and the musicals which come here from Broadway. The other shots are other theaters in the area. The first pic is Heinz Hall, where the Pittsburgh Symphony and the Pittsburgh Ballet Theater perform. Guess what they're doing right now? That's right, The Nutcracker! They also do 2 Messiah performances during December: One is a singalong where they seat you according to voice and only have soloists on stage; the other is the Mendelssohn choir with soloists performing. Mom likes them both, of course. Right up the block from the theaters is the High School for the Performing Arts, too, so the students are right in the thick of things.
Thanks for visiting the Cultural District with me today. See you tomorrow, here's a vote for you. Hugs, Peppino

  Hi Sam
We're staying at the aquarium today, because mom found pics of the penguins, a good one of the polar bear, and a SEA DRAGON, Yay! The aquarium takes up a couple of levels, the shark tank takes up all the levels, though. It goes from top to bottom of the aquarium, with sharks and other fish swimming in the whole thing. The penguins are out walking in our pic, the zoo people take them for a walk through the zoo at least every week. They live at the aquarium, though. They have one big corner enclosure where they can be on ice or in the water.
Do you love the sea dragon? Mom thinks they are really beautiful fish, and like sea horses, the male keeps the eggs safe in a pouch on his belly. They blend right in with the leaves on the plants and when you go to the aquarium, sometimes it takes awhile to spot them because they are so well camouflaged.
I hope you are having a good day today and I thank you for your ongoing support! Hugs, Peppino

Sea dragons are in the sea horse family, but are much more colorful, and they have a neat tank of them at the aquarium. There are mostly what you would expect there, fish, like sharks and things. They have piranhas, too. There is an outdoor part with PA freshwater fish in it, and the polar bears are there as well. They also have a breeding facility. So the aquarium is home to lots of marine and freshwater fish, jellyfish, a huge coral reef, and lots of other things that live underwater. One of mom's favorite parts is that you can walk underneath the polar bears' pool and if they are swimming, it looks really cool. They have a fisherman's village set up beneath the polar bear exhibit, with lots of artifacts, as well as lists of sustainable fish to eat, and those that are not sustainable. When you leave the aquarium, you can either head home or go to the children's zoo. Mom likes going through the whole place, though, so even though she's far too old to be a child, she heads for the children's zoo at the end of the aquarium.
Hope you are having a good day and that I'll see you again tomorrow. Hugs, Peppino
*PPG stands for Pittsburgh Plate Glass, the sponsor of the aquarium.

  Hi Sam
Today we will visit the zoo, a small part of Highland Park, but a well known zoo in the US. There is also the PPG aquarium there, but we will look at it later. The zoo is one of the 6 largest in the country and has changed a lot over the years. Mom used to hate to go there when she was small because all the animals were in cages. Now they all have large open areas to live in, and they look much happier. There is an Asian forest section, with neat tigers and other animals, including a komodo dragon; a primate house with large enclosures for gibbons, lemurs, great apes, and many kinds of monkeys; an African savannah with elephants, zebras, giraffes, etc. There are lots of birds there too, waterfowl, flamingos, owls, etc. There is a children's zoo, an education building, a bat house, a reptile house, a large pool with seals. It's a great place to walk around and spend a day. The zoo even invites senior citizens every Wednesday morning before opening to walk around there instead of walking the mall! I bet you'd love to see the zoo!
Hope you are having a good day. Thanks again for supporting me this month, and here's a vote for you too. Hugs, Peppino

  Hi Sam
No new pics today because we're revisiting the parks momentarily. I did post the Pirate parrot and the Penguin penguin, though. As I said yesterday Pittsburgh has some rabid sports fans, and there is sports memorabilia for sale in a lot of places in the city. But Pittsburghers also love to participate in sporting events. There are baseball and softball areas in all the parks, as well as tennis courts, some soccer fields, basketball courts, even places to play tetherball. Frick even has a bowling green and leagues that play there all summer long. As well as the ball parklets in the parks, there is an ice skating rink at Schenley Park, and swimming pools at both Schenley and Highland Parks. If a person isn't so sports minded, there are family picnic pavilios, many of the parks offer community gardens, Frick has a nature center with programs, and of course there is the zoo and aquarium at Highland Park. We'll talk more of that tomorrow.
I hope you are having a good day, and maybe even thinking of visiting our city at some point. Mom loves to take folks around. Hugs, Peppino

  Hi Sam
I've torn out my alarm system & de-registered from the Neighborhood Watch.
I've got two Pakistani flags raised in my front yard,
one at each corner and the black flag of ISIS in the center.
The local police, State Police, FBI, Secret Service
and other intelligence services are all watching my house 24/7.
I've never felt safer.

  Hi Sam
Thanks for your vote, I appreciate each one.
Today we can visit the sports arenas of the city. Pittsburgh has 3 teams, the Pirates (whose mascot is a parrot), the Penguins (whose mascot is a penguin, of course), and the Steelers (whose mascot is creepy!). So, I'm showing 2 pics of the North Shore, where the Pirates play baseball in PNC Park and the Steelers play at Heinz Field. Pitt also plays football at Heinz Field. The hockey arena is my third pic, that's the new Consol Energy Center. Other events are held there as well, the circus, ice shows, the occasional basketball game, concerts, etc. Pittsburgh boasts some rabid sports fans, and there are lots of places in town where a person can buy Pirate, Penguin, or Steeler gear and other memorabilia.
I hope you are having a happy day and whatever team you root for in football wins today. Hugs, Peppino

  Hi Sam
Thanks so much for your support and votes.
Today we are going downtown to see another green space in the city. It's Point State Park, and it's located at the confluence of the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers, right at the mouth of the Ohio River. It's a small park, but it contains Fort Pitt, after which Pittsburgh is named. There is a neat fountain right at the point which can shoot high into the air, or be a nice calm little fountain, depending on the weather and time of day. In my 5th pic, the fountain looks pink, doesn't it? That's because it is! They make it pink for October, breast cancer awareness month. The first pic is the giant rubber ducky who visited here last summer. Since we are all birds, I thought you'd enjoy seeing it, even though it isn't part of the park. It stayed on the river until late in the summer, then left for parts unknown, or at least unknown to mom, heehee. At Point State Park, they do summer concerts and lots of other fun activities throughout the year. It's also the headquarters for the Pittsburgh Arts Festival in June, and the 3 Rivers Regatta around the 4th of July.
I hope you are enjoying the green parts of our city as much as we do. Have a wonderful day! Hugs, Peppino

  Hi Sam
mom is also getting rid of a ton of clothes. she has all these pant suits that she bought when she was working and they are all expensive and ralph lauren and calvin kline but they are also very old and outdated. mom loves the pant suits but why keep them if you don't wear them. they are all in perfect shape but probably would be considered vintage clothes. lol. i guess my mom is vintage too.

  Hi Sam
Thanks for your vote, and thanks to Aunt Rose, Dixie's mom, for our beautiful and seasonally appropriate pics.
I decided I'd feature Pittsburgh for at least a few days, without getting tedious.
Lots of people have the wrong idea of Pittsburgh, they still think of it like it was in the '50s, Hell with the Lid Off, because of all the mills and pollution. The mills are long gone, the riverfronts have been developed, and it's a great place to visit or to live.
We actually have a beautiful clear skyline today, with lots of tall buildings. But today I want to stress the academic climate here. Pittsburgh and the surrounding areas are home to many colleges and universities. Let's start from where I live and go towards town. There's Chatham College, Carnegie Mellon University, University of Pittsburgh, Carlow University, Duquesne University, Point Park College, Robert Morris, and LaRoche. Isn't that a lot of higher education? Mom has a particular fondness for Carlow, where she attended undergrad school on a working scholarship, and the University of Pittsburgh, where she got her Masters degree. Okay, so now you know where the eggheads in Pittsburgh are!
Thanks for your vote, see you again tomorrow, I hope! Hope also that you are having a great day. Hugs, Peppino
