We met Sam at a Breeder's house. We were looking for a bird and she told us pick whatever one that would like. He was the smallest and had a very short tail at that time. Told the lady that is one and we brought him home.. |

Hi Sam I know how you feel. My mom was allowed into Funny Cide's stall. He won the Derby in 2003. She also has been to a thoroughbred retirement farm. So thrilling to pet the famous horses and feed them carrots. Today was a very cold and rainy day. It’s only in the 40’s …BRRRR! That storm on Monday left many broken trees on our road. Today they came down and we were out of power for 5 hours while they fixed them. Hope it gets warmer soon. Hugs ChynaCome visit me, Chyna & Bailey ♥ RIP.

Hi Sam Oh yes, my mom loves thoroughbred horses. It started when she started riding at age two. Then at age 6, she went to Churchill Downs. Her parronts knew someone and they took them on a wonderful tour. Mom says she remembers that she thought they would let her take a race horse home ... silly mom! Hi Sam Yes, it's very hard to win the Triple Crown. Sometimes, if your horse doesn't win the KY Derby, they hold out for Belmont. That way that have a fresh horse. Belmont is on June 8th. It's very important when leaving the gate to get to the spot you want asap. Orb didn't do that. he waited too long to make his move and the jockey kept him by the rail way too long. He hates the rail and likes the outside pack ... never got there. Revolutionary is a good horse. Mom placed a small bet on him ... he came in at show. Hugs ChynaCome visit me, Chyna & Bailey ♥ RIP.

Hey Sam Mom was thinking about where you live and realized the situation might be similar. She remembers your sweet mom explaining about your area. It can definitely be cause for concern, but suppose there is always something no matter where you live. Best just to be prepared and not worry too much. Takes too much energy and removes too much joy. Take care sweet Sam. Lots of love to you, Mackie As always, prayers to your mom.Come visit me, Remington, Athena & Mackenzie.

Hey Sam The parronts had a tense afternoon and evening yesterday. A 48 year old woman on drugs decided to take a lighter and start a fire in a field near here. (She was, of course, arrested.) The fields are very dry, fire danger is high and the fire grew rapidly. We are very grateful for the rapid response from the fire crews. Helicopters made trips back and forth to dump water on the fire as well. Early evening the parronts found out they were in no danger and crews were just monitoring hot spots. Mom saw the damage today. It had actually moved away from us but toward other homes. We love where we live, but fire is always a possibility so mom keeps our travel cages nearby. Birds and dogs first, pictures if she has time, the rest isn't important! Love and winghugs, Mackie Always keeping your mom in our prayers!!!Come visit me, Remington, Athena & Mackenzie.

Hi Sam! Our parronts are just gonna love each other because they are sooo much alike. Mom the same with the produce, dad with the cans. Hi Sam! How are you this yucky weekend? I think the sun has left for vacation! At least the rain is good for the garden. I screwed up getting to practice yesterday. Hope I was able to make up for it. The parronts went to that new Star Trek movie and dropped me off at Kevlar Stadium instead of the Tiels Practice Stadium. Whew! What a rush that was to get into practice. Hey Sam Your poor mom! We will always keep her in our prayers! Mom really believes in the power of prayer, not just for healing but for peace and comfort too. She thinks those things are all wrapped together and work in concert. Mom has known some budgies that could say a few words and she was told that Remy could learn to talk. Since Athena talks to the parronts, he might pick it up. He's really still very young, only 6 months old. Guess we'll have to wait and see. Hey Sam After having us big beaks, mom is really happy with little keet Remy. She says he's a happy little bird and just loves his chatter and chirps. It's very different, of course, but a difference she is enjoying. He does say "hi" now, although mom says she doesn't think he knows the context. It's just part of his chatter. So sorry to hear your mom is having trouble just getting her shopping done. That has to be so difficult and makes it hard when you know you have to take care of some things. We are keeping your sweet mom in our prayers!!! Lots of love and winghugs cute Sam! MackieCome visit me, Remington, Athena & Mackenzie.

Hi Sam I love to chew wood. I do that for many hours everyday. Today, I was on a walk-about and mom heard my beak on the dinning room chair. I was yelled at! She said I'd be in BIG trouble if I chewed that chair ... mom's no fun! Today was warm and sunny. I was able to get outside for a little stroller time (see pics below). Mom and I sat on the patio and feed the blue jays and chipmunks. I talked to them but, they just stared at me. They say that we will have nice weather thru Sunday, hope they are right! Hey Sam Mom knew your mom would know how she felt about skinbro. Right now, the only guys hanging around the back fountain are the turkeys. Looks like a convention back there, lol! Mom had a visit from a bird rescue group today, Mickaboo. If approved, she will be able to meet some of their birds in hopes of adopting. Things went really well and she's excited. This was the fourth and final step to be approved prior to meeting the birds. She had to fill out an application, attend their class, have a phone interview and then the in-home visit. Anyway, it could take a couple weeks, maybe more, so we will keep you posted and let you know if/when we add to our flock! We will continue to pray for your mom! Hi Sam! Yes, dad made a killing with those BBB coupons for some new comforters and shams for the beds. They were 50% off and then the discount with the coupons. Shop Rite has the K cups on sale sometimes. Mom will even buy a flavor that they don't drink (dad likes French Vanilla, mom Hazelnut) for company who don't care for the flavored coffees. Hi Sam! Yes, you have to have your mom plan to meet up with the parronts! And if she's lucky, she will meet AUnt Jeanne and Starbuck because sometimes they are here on Sat! You mom is like our dad with the BBB coupons--he did eggactly that with the Keurig. Mom let out a big squawk when he gave her that for Christmas, but it has paid off well because dad doesn't like his coffee strong, so he makes his cup out of mom's, 2 from 1 cup. And they throw out no coffee now. Shop Rite has the Green Mountain cups on sale for $6.99. Then dad got a Nija food processor, juicer, blender for mom's hatchday--that is awesome because mom makes our parrot chop with it. So definitely, give mom a shout, and she will give your mom her cell number. Going to the ballgame, big frother Doo is playing. Hi Sam Another nice day here. I did try to talk to those outside birds ... not sure what they were saying ... strange chirp. Well, only two more derby blogs to go. DAY 28 Introduction into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of fame of clearly the highest level of achievement and recognition in Thoroughbred racing but it is an honor, not an award. In Thoroughbred horse racing there is only one award that really matters: the Eclipse Award. This award is racing’s equivalent to the Academy Award (Oscar). As with other prestigious awards, there are many categories for the Eclipse: owners, breeder, trainer, jockey, apprentice jockey, and Horse of the Year etc. Hugs ChynaCome visit me, Chyna & Bailey ♥ RIP.

Hi Sam Spring is really here! We only have a few piles of snow left. Today was sunny and very warm ... no coat day. I sat by the screen door looking at the sun, it was nice. DAY 27 PLEASE NOTE: Horses are racing at 40 MPH. Hi Sam That is so sweet of you. I always put them on my page with my g'nite ... in case you miss any. We are finally seeing more bare ground than snow ...YAY! DAY 26 To qualify for the Kentucky Derby, you’ll have to win an invitation by performing well on smaller horseracing circuits, and compete on a horse that meets the race’s strict standards. 1) Have all ownership and genealogy papers relating to your horse ready for authentication. The horse MUST be a thoroughbred. 2) Your horse will have to work his/her way up by winning races on the graded circuit. They will have win or place in the graded races throughout the year. 3) You will also have to compete in the racing circuit in your home state, or the state where your thoroughbred was born and raised. 4) Place well at graded stakes races, winning or finishing in the top three as frequently as possible. The goal is to accumulate prize money winnings and points. They have now started using a point system as well. The higher the finish and the more prestigious the race the more points given. 5) Participate in large-purse horse races as you become more confident in your thoroughbred’s abilities to win races. Part of what allows you to qualify is the amount of winnings your horse has racked up over the previous year. 6) Apply to participate in the Kentucky Derby. If your horse has been burning up the race circuits, they may just invite you. Hugs ChynaCome visit me, Chyna & Bailey ♥ RIP.

Hi Sam I'm happy that every bird seems to enjoy the blogs. And, I was worried, silly bird! We are in derby mode at my house. I'm trying to help mom with everything. DAY 24 Types of Races: Stakes Race - The highest level of racing. The horses are the most formful. Top level for stakes races is the Graded Stakes Races (grade 1, 2, 3). This is where you will find the very best horses. Grade 1 races include the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, Belmont, and all of the Breeder’s Cup Races. These are the cream of the crop horses. Allowance Race - Between stakes and upper-level claiming. These horses are not as consistent as stakes horses but they’re more consistent than the claimers. Upper-level Claiming Race - These horses are more formful than lower-level claimers. Any horse can be claimed (bought). You need to put in your request before the race. No matter what happens to the horse, you are the owner after the race. Lower-level Claiming Race - The lowest level of racing and the least consistent in performance. The types of wagers are - Win, Place, Show, Across the Board, Exacta, Trifecta, and Superfecta. Hugs ChynaCome visit me, Chyna & Bailey ♥ RIP.

Hi Sam I had to do two blogs yesterday cause my parronts were gone all day (and night) on Wednesday. Mom says she's really tired. I try to help but pulling the keys off the keyboard don't help much. DAY 19 The Kentucky Oaks is a “PINK OUT“ race day. They encourage all attendees to incorporate pink in their attire for the day to show their support. They also have a moving Cancer Survivors Parade on the track and a special winners circle formed by cancer survivors. This is the only time they allow people on the track. Additionally, Churchill Downs’ facility will be adorned in pink, including pink colored bunting, flower beds, flags, and jockeys’ and pony riders’ apparel. Even bugler, Steve Buttleman will sport a pink uniform as he calls the horses to the post throughout the Oaks race card. Hugs ChynaCome visit me, Chyna & Bailey ♥ RIP.

Oh, Sam... ..we are all so sorry to hear about Misty. Mom didn't want to push the weekend because she heard you poor mamma had some health issues and pain. We hope she is feeling better. That's one of the worst decisions parronts have to make. I know mom and dad did that last year with Anubis and I know he was right up at the Bridge to welcome Misty with open paws. I'm sure our frothers up there, Rufus, George, Tricky Dick and Oneil made a pest of themselves with the doggies. That's what we birdies love to do. Bethlehem was simply the best! The walking tour was not boring at all. They had Charlie leading the interpretive walk on Sat and mom was so happy they went up early because the light and the sky wasn't as good on Sunday for photos. Vince Giordano and his Nighthawks sold out the concert--they had to move it to a larger room and open the balcony. Give mom a shout and she will mail you one Vince's discs and see if you like the music. He is currently doing the music for Boardwalk Empire (the parronts don't get the movie channels, instead rent them on Netflix) and Vince does all the music history for the series. We look soooo forward to seeing your flockily at the games this season! Princess will make a superb cheerleader! Love and winghugs, Moggie PS Please give Cydney a special beaky kiss from me, congratulating her on BOTD! Hi Sam Day 18 Derby Bits ~~~~~~~~~ In 1905 only three horses ran in the Kentucky Derby, the smallest field in the race’s history. Agile was the winner. The fastest Derby time was set in 1973 by the famed Triple crown winner Secretariat. His time was 1:59 2/5seconds for the 1 and 1/4 miles. The first gray horse to win the Derby was Determine, in 1954. The first live radio broadcast of the Kentucky Derby was in 1925. In 1952 the Kentucky derby was covered on national television for the first time. The governor of Kentucky is the only person permitted to present the trophy to the winner. The oldest jockey to win was Bill Shoemaker. He was 54 when he rode Ferdinand to victory in 1986. In 2010 Calvin Borel set a new record, being the first jockey to win 3 out of 4 consecutive Kentucky Derbies. Some of the most famous horses in history never ran in the Kentucky Derby, including Man o’ War, Seabiscuit and John Henry. The Kentucky Derby has been postponed only once. That was in 1945 during World War 11. That year it was run in June instead of the traditional May. In 2005, the purse distribution for the Derby was changed, so that the horse that finished 5th would receive a share of the purse. Previously only the first four finishers did so. Hi Sam I'm trying to catch up ... parronts just got back home. You will get 2 blogs today. DAY 17 In 1875 the derby was raced at a mile and a half, the distance it would remain until 1896 when it was changed to it’s present one and a quarter mile. Fifteen horses were entered that day. The winner of the very first Kentucky Derby was Aristides. He was a small, Kentucky bred chestnut colt. Aristides was initially thought of as the rabbit, the early race leader who sets the pace. The pace he set was so fast that by the far turn he was losing the rest of the field, making an exciting finish for the first Derby. He won $18,325. Aristides is honored with a life size statue at Churchill Downs. Hugs ChynaCome visit me, Chyna & Bailey ♥ RIP.
