  Hi Sam
.mom was reading something very interesting today. a group of scientists from the netherlands have developed a mushroom that eats only plastic. they developed this to try and take care of the huge amounts of discarded plastics floating around in giant floating piles in our oceans today. most of the discarded plastics are from the united states.. the scientists say it will be many years of testing before they can determine if the plastic eating mushroom would be edible by humans. since many plastics are now used in shampoos and makeup mom had a disturbing thought. as a young girl in the 50s she saw a movie called attack of the mushroom people. it was about a group of travelers who had been stranded on this island with no food. they found these delicious mushrooms that staved off their hunger but the more they ate the faster they actually turned into mushrooms themselves. mom was terrified to eat any mushrooms for fear she would turn into one. now she has to worry if the mushrooms will attack her face because of the plastic in the makeup or attach themselves to moms hair because of the plastic in the shampoo. what if the plastic eating mushrooms form a gang and liberate the poor mushrooms grown on mushroom farms because they aren't being treated humanely. at least mom feels some sense of hope that some are trying to get rid of the huge piles of plastic trash and maybe being a mushroom might not be such a bad deal.

Thanks for your votes and visits daily! I love hearing from everybirdie.
Yesterday we did everything Heinz, today we are moving to Frick. He was one of those robber baron guys, but he gave back some to the city. Not like Andrew Carnegie, who gave back a ton, but still...
Henry Clay Frick gave Pittsburgh Frick Park, a beautiful space in the eastern part of the city with tennis courts, many playgrounds, walking trails, a nature center, a running track, an exercise track, a bowling green, as well as many picnic pavilions. In my pics today, the fifth and sixth ones are of Frick Art museum, right across from the bowling greens of the park. The Museum isn't part of the park, though. It's a small museum with many beautiful paintings. In a neighboring block is Clayton, a Frick city mansion. One of the pics is the garage. A friend of mom's is curator of the cars. The mansion itself is huge, the rooms are incredible, there is great woodwork inside. Right now it's decked out for the holidays. I don't know if you can see it, but one of the pics shows the staircase draped in greens. There are tours conducted there when people request them.
I hope you are still enjoying your tour of Pittsburgh. I'm having fun bringing to you all the great areas of the city. Hope also that you are having a great day! Hugs, Peppino

.i sure hope santabird is paying much attention to me i am also biting more. when mom plays with me for my exercise sometimes if she gets me so worked up i can't tell the difference between her hand and the toy she is using to play with me so mom always tries to keep the toy in front of her hands. tonight mom was watching tv and i came over and bite her on the nose. luckily for mom is was just a play bite mom tries very hard to keep me away from her head and when mom kisses me she holds my beak so i can't bite but when i see an opportunity i take it. anyway i am back to making a cave out of the pillows and dragging my egg carton in there to shred it so maybe it is a little hormonal

  Hi Sam
Thanks for the votes every day! I really love hearing from you, too.
Before we leave the Strip, we have to visit St. Stanislaus Church, it's right in the center of things, there on Smallman Street! The first 2 pics in my gallery show one of the oldest churches in Pittsburgh, St. Stanislaus in the Strip. I thought while we were seeing churches, we could go back to Oakland and see St. Paul's Cathedral, the next 2 pics in my gallery. This is the biggest Catholic church in the area. The last 2 new pics are of East Liberty Presbyterian Church, built by the Mellons in the 1800s. The people in Pittsburgh at the time called it Mellon's Fire Escape! Maybe it was, who knows? Today at that church, there are organ recitals every week, and Taize music some evenings. If you don't know the Taize stuff, you should google it and listen to a piece or 2, it's beautiful singing.
So, tomorrow we will go back to Oakland to see other things, including Heinz Chapel.
You may have noted Heinz field, Heinz History museum, and now Heinz chapel; what's that all about? We'll talk more tomorrow! Hope you have a spectacular day. Hugs, Peppino

Thanks for your ongoing support!
Today I posted one more pic of PennMac, the cheese counter! It is as popular as the meat counter, and always crowded.
Next, while we are in the Strip District, we have to visit the Heinz History Center. It's in the heart of the Strip District, and houses Pittsburgh history, including a trolley. They have traveling exhibits there, too. They are doing a Heinz exhibit right now though, featuring Heinz ketchup and pickles, haha. The first pic is one of an evaluation of antiques they do at the history center each August. From what the people bring in to be assessed, they film 10 to 12 episodes of Hidden Treasures, a TV show kind of like Antiques Roadshow, but with all Pittsburghers and their stuff. Some of it is quite valuable.
We probably should leave the Strip soon, so mom doesn't end up buying a lot of stuff. Some of the stores, like Wholey's fish market, are unique and wonderful to visit!
See you tomorrow with another installment of Pittsburgh stuff. Hope you are having a great day! Hugs, Peppino

  Hi Sam
Thank you for your daily visits and votes!
Today we are visiting another area of Pittsburgh which used to be little known, but now is pretty much known to any tourist who comes here. It's the Strip District. No, people don't strip to go there, it's a strip along the Allegheny River very close to town. It used to be a large warehouse district where greengrocers, butchers, and other merchants went early in the day (think 3AM) to get fresh supplies for their stores. The public could also go there and shop. In mom's family, they went in the fall to get whole pigs for sausages and crates of grapes for wine. Over time, as more of the public went there to shop for goods, it became specialized into ethnic shopping areas. There were stores like the Pennsylvania Macaroni company, catering to Italians, Stamboolis, catering to near eastern groups, Greek and Asian markets, etc. Today, the strip has become more genteel, so to speak. There are no longer hucksters in the streets, and lots of the big warehouses are now art galleries, bars, dance clubs, or broken into groups of smaller shops, like the Pittsburgh Public Market.
The oldest stores, like PennMac (Mom's favorite), Wholey's Fish market, and a few others are still up and thriving, but smaller markets, like the biscotti company are doing well too. They have even started sidewalk cafes in the strip for the summer trade. It retains some of its old flavor, though, which makes it still a great place to walk and shop.
Have a wonderful day, don't forget to give out kissies for those scritches. Hugs, Peppino

Thanks for your ongoing support, I appreciate each vote.
Today we are going back downtown to the Cultural District. It's a few blocks of theaters and art galleries in the heart of the city. The 4th and 5th pics in my gallery are mom's favorite site; that's Benedum Center, where mom goes to the opera! The Benedum also houses the Civic Light Opera and the musicals which come here from Broadway. The other shots are other theaters in the area. The first pic is Heinz Hall, where the Pittsburgh Symphony and the Pittsburgh Ballet Theater perform. Guess what they're doing right now? That's right, The Nutcracker! They also do 2 Messiah performances during December: One is a singalong where they seat you according to voice and only have soloists on stage; the other is the Mendelssohn choir with soloists performing. Mom likes them both, of course. Right up the block from the theaters is the High School for the Performing Arts, too, so the students are right in the thick of things.
Thanks for visiting the Cultural District with me today. See you tomorrow, here's a vote for you. Hugs, Peppino

  Hi Sam
We're staying at the aquarium today, because mom found pics of the penguins, a good one of the polar bear, and a SEA DRAGON, Yay! The aquarium takes up a couple of levels, the shark tank takes up all the levels, though. It goes from top to bottom of the aquarium, with sharks and other fish swimming in the whole thing. The penguins are out walking in our pic, the zoo people take them for a walk through the zoo at least every week. They live at the aquarium, though. They have one big corner enclosure where they can be on ice or in the water.
Do you love the sea dragon? Mom thinks they are really beautiful fish, and like sea horses, the male keeps the eggs safe in a pouch on his belly. They blend right in with the leaves on the plants and when you go to the aquarium, sometimes it takes awhile to spot them because they are so well camouflaged.
I hope you are having a good day today and I thank you for your ongoing support! Hugs, Peppino

  Hi Sam
Thanks for your daily votes, I love hearing from you each day and returning the favor.
Today we will look at the *PPG Aquarium. It's part of the zoo at Highland Park, but is newer. Mom was looking for pics of the neat sea dragons, but couldn't find any from PPG. Sea dragons are in the sea horse family, but are much more colorful, and they have a neat tank of them at the aquarium. There are mostly what you would expect there, fish, like sharks and things. They have piranhas, too. There is an outdoor part with PA freshwater fish in it, and the polar bears are there as well. They also have a breeding facility. So the aquarium is home to lots of marine and freshwater fish, jellyfish, a huge coral reef, and lots of other things that live underwater. One of mom's favorite parts is that you can walk underneath the polar bears' pool and if they are swimming, it looks really cool. They have a fisherman's village set up beneath the polar bear exhibit, with lots of artifacts, as well as lists of sustainable fish to eat, and those that are not sustainable. When you leave the aquarium, you can either head home or go to the children's zoo. Mom likes going through the whole place, though, so even though she's far too old to be a child, she heads for the children's zoo at the end of the aquarium.
Hope you are having a good day and that I'll see you again tomorrow. Hugs, Peppino

  Hi Sam
Today we will visit the zoo, a small part of Highland Park, but a well known zoo in the US. There is also the PPG aquarium there, but we will look at it later. The zoo is one of the 6 largest in the country and has changed a lot over the years. Mom used to hate to go there when she was small because all the animals were in cages. Now they all have large open areas to live in, and they look much happier. There is an Asian forest section, with neat tigers and other animals, including a komodo dragon; a primate house with large enclosures for gibbons, lemurs, great apes, and many kinds of monkeys; an African savannah with elephants, zebras, giraffes, etc. There are lots of birds there too, waterfowl, flamingos, owls, etc. There is a children's zoo, an education building, a bat house, a reptile house, a large pool with seals. It's a great place to walk around and spend a day. The zoo even invites senior citizens every Wednesday morning before opening to walk around there instead of walking the mall! I bet you'd love to see the zoo!
Hope you are having a good day. Thanks again for supporting me this month, and here's a vote for you too. Hugs, Peppino

No new pics today because we're revisiting the parks momentarily. I did post the Pirate parrot and the Penguin penguin, though. As I said yesterday Pittsburgh has some rabid sports fans, and there is sports memorabilia for sale in a lot of places in the city. But Pittsburghers also love to participate in sporting events. There are baseball and softball areas in all the parks, as well as tennis courts, some soccer fields, basketball courts, even places to play tetherball. Frick even has a bowling green and leagues that play there all summer long. As well as the ball parklets in the parks, there is an ice skating rink at Schenley Park, and swimming pools at both Schenley and Highland Parks. If a person isn't so sports minded, there are family picnic pavilios, many of the parks offer community gardens, Frick has a nature center with programs, and of course there is the zoo and aquarium at Highland Park. We'll talk more of that tomorrow.
I hope you are having a good day, and maybe even thinking of visiting our city at some point. Mom loves to take folks around. Hugs, Peppino

Thanks for your vote, I appreciate each one.
Today we can visit the sports arenas of the city. Pittsburgh has 3 teams, the Pirates (whose mascot is a parrot), the Penguins (whose mascot is a penguin, of course), and the Steelers (whose mascot is creepy!). So, I'm showing 2 pics of the North Shore, where the Pirates play baseball in PNC Park and the Steelers play at Heinz Field. Pitt also plays football at Heinz Field. The hockey arena is my third pic, that's the new Consol Energy Center. Other events are held there as well, the circus, ice shows, the occasional basketball game, concerts, etc. Pittsburgh boasts some rabid sports fans, and there are lots of places in town where a person can buy Pirate, Penguin, or Steeler gear and other memorabilia.
I hope you are having a happy day and whatever team you root for in football wins today. Hugs, Peppino

  Hi Sam
Thanks so much for your support and votes.
Today we are going downtown to see another green space in the city. It's Point State Park, and it's located at the confluence of the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers, right at the mouth of the Ohio River. It's a small park, but it contains Fort Pitt, after which Pittsburgh is named. There is a neat fountain right at the point which can shoot high into the air, or be a nice calm little fountain, depending on the weather and time of day. In my 5th pic, the fountain looks pink, doesn't it? That's because it is! They make it pink for October, breast cancer awareness month. The first pic is the giant rubber ducky who visited here last summer. Since we are all birds, I thought you'd enjoy seeing it, even though it isn't part of the park. It stayed on the river until late in the summer, then left for parts unknown, or at least unknown to mom, heehee. At Point State Park, they do summer concerts and lots of other fun activities throughout the year. It's also the headquarters for the Pittsburgh Arts Festival in June, and the 3 Rivers Regatta around the 4th of July.
I hope you are enjoying the green parts of our city as much as we do. Have a wonderful day! Hugs, Peppino

  Hi Sam
Thanks for your vote, and thanks to Aunt Rose, Dixie's mom, for our beautiful and seasonally appropriate pics.
I decided I'd feature Pittsburgh for at least a few days, without getting tedious.
Lots of people have the wrong idea of Pittsburgh, they still think of it like it was in the '50s, Hell with the Lid Off, because of all the mills and pollution. The mills are long gone, the riverfronts have been developed, and it's a great place to visit or to live.
We actually have a beautiful clear skyline today, with lots of tall buildings. But today I want to stress the academic climate here. Pittsburgh and the surrounding areas are home to many colleges and universities. Let's start from where I live and go towards town. There's Chatham College, Carnegie Mellon University, University of Pittsburgh, Carlow University, Duquesne University, Point Park College, Robert Morris, and LaRoche. Isn't that a lot of higher education? Mom has a particular fondness for Carlow, where she attended undergrad school on a working scholarship, and the University of Pittsburgh, where she got her Masters degree. Okay, so now you know where the eggheads in Pittsburgh are!
Thanks for your vote, see you again tomorrow, I hope! Hope also that you are having a great day. Hugs, Peppino

HAPPY HUMPDAY

we got a sprinkling of snow not at all like what you are getting.

mom always does our blogging for us after we go to bed at night.last night while mom was playing with me before bedtime she noticed this sour smell coming from my mouth and nares. naturally mom panicked and first thought that came to her mind was sour crop which can be very dangerous. i of course was acting fine, maybe not playing as much as usual but sure wanting lots of head scritches. no loss of appetite cause mom gave me a cashew and i gobbled it right down. i did seem to be very thirsty so mom added a tiny amount of apple cider viinegar to my water and i drank quite a lot of it. mom was going to take me to the vet first thing in the morning but instead of doing our blogging she was doing research on sour crop. this morning when mom got up the sour smell had dissipated quite a bit but is still there. i am still eating and drinking and acting fine so mom will continue with the vinegar and see if the smell goes away completely.

  Hi Sam
yesterday was quite a day for us. it was mom and dads 37anniversary and they were actually going to leave the house and go out for dinner. dad asked mom to trim Boo Boo's beak because he said the top was way to long and she couldn't eat properly with it. so long. when mom took a look she saw that Boo Boo had somehow broken the bottom half of my beak off and my top beak was about 3/4 of an inch longer. she wrapped Boo Boo in a tea towel and got a good grip of my head and held her beak together and started filing away with the emery board. she moved fast because she doesn't want to hold her in that position for very long. at one point she noticed blood on her hand and thought maybe i had bitten her so she stopped to checked and make sure Boo Boo was ok . here Boo Boos top beak had started to bleed where she filed it down. you have to realize mom always is working on our beak and nails and so was very surprised to see what had happened in the first place and in order for Boo Boos beak to fit properly she had to file it down to the right length which made it bleed. when mom saw the blood she became ill and thought she was going to vomit. she grabbed some flour and dipped her beak in it. then she uses a cloth and wiped the blood off, then she dipped her beak in flour again. at this point we suspected mom was putting batter on Boo Boo to eat her for dinner. mom was so upset she told dad no way was she going out for dinner when Boo Boosbeak had been bleeding. what if it started bleeding again while they were gone. dad said ok and went out and brought dinner hone from a nice local italian restaurant. that night mom let Boo Boo chase a live cricket around and she did catch it and ate it all up. i was fairly upset that Boo Boo got so much attention. mom gave me a cashew to cheer me up. Boo Boo is still mad at mom but acting a little better and eating with her beak. mom says withBoo Boos beak so short she really look like a baby bird now.
mom also says i am looking better and better and my beak is looking better and better also. i am keeping my weight at 474 grams which is good for me. mom says my eyes also have a sparkle to them which she hasn't seen for a few years.

  Hi Sam
mom figured the deer are drinking from the bird baths in the summer because she had to fill them up everyday. she just never saw them do it.

mom gave me a bath today. she doesn't like to when the weather is cold because she is afraid i will get sick from a draft but she decided i was so grungy it would do me a lot of good. after a nice shower of warm water i got blow dried which is my favorite part. then i took a nap. mom said my feathers felt super soft tonight.

HAPPY HUMPDAY

  Hi Sam
from all the weather reports we woke up expecting everything to be covered in snow but it wasn't. just foggy, super windy and very cold. it did warm up to 18. there was a lot of bird activity at the heated birdbath . we can't see the birdbath but we could hear the birds.

  Hi Sam
well its snowing and icy outside. mom bagged 6 bags of leaves yesterday and the temperature was around 38 so it wasn't too bad. its nasty out now. somehow mom pulled a muscle packing the leaves tightly into the bags. so far tylenol is making the pain bearable.mom isn't nearly done with the leaves. she has to dig out all the leaves stuck in the shrubs on the hillside and do the back of the house. mom will leave the hillside for spring leaf cleanup. mom won't be doing any leaves for a while. right now its 13 degrees outside and the wind is really blowing so it feels like 20 below. hopefully most of the leaves will blow off the trees now. mom has one birdbath right beside the house with an electric heater in it so hopefully the birds will be able to find it. she also has an electric water bowl for everything see but hasn't plugged that in yet.

  Hi Sam
what do the wild turkeys eat? do you put corn in the bird food or do they eat sunflower seeds also. what i don't understand about wild turkeys is that if they can fly why do they take a chance and try to cross the roads. mom always stops and lets them cross but some drivers get annoyed and try to speed right through. like waiting a few moments to let them cross is going to kill them.

  Hi Sam
we don't feed the wild birds anymore because we had a big infestation of rats and sure don't want them to come back. thats so cool that the wild turkeys are at your bird feeder. years ago when mom used to feed the wild birds pheasants would come to the feeder and start making lots of noise at the crack of dawn. they sure were pretty. mom hasn't seen any around for years.

  Hi Sam
yesterday we had temperatures in the low 70s. a perfect day for picking up leaves but did mom pick up any leaves? NO! today dad blew some of the leaves into the center of the yard by the front porch.temps we in the upper 30s. mom went out and packed 4 bags and her hands were freezing so she called it quits and went back inside.

HAPPY HUMPDAY

  Hi Sam
we had a beautiful day. it was in the low 70s. tomorrow the arctic blast is suppose to hit.

mom got an emil today from walmart confirming a trac phone online download ,which mom never bought, using a charge card mom doesn't even own. after fighting with the robot on walmarts phone customer service mom finally was able to speak to a person who mom couldn't understand, who didn't understand what mom was talking about. on top of that the billing address was for texas. to top it all off mom doesn't even have a cell phone. mom wasn't haPPY SO SHE called the credit card company who had no record of any transaction taken place since mom doesn't have a charge card with them. this whole thing makes absolutely no sense. she then called walmart customer service back and said maybe walmart accidentally put moms email on someone else account. walmart said they have corrected the problem and no one can use moms email including mom. mom said what if i want to buy something from walmart.com and the customer service rep said mom will have to get another email. in the meantime walmart told mom not to delete the emails from walmart which leads mom to believe nothing has been done except to ban mom from walmart.

  Hi Sam
dad waited all week to hear from the doc about his pathology test. finally by friday he still hadn't heard anything so he called his pcp, early in the morning, to find out the results. the pcp said he had the results but dad had to wait for the surgeon to get in touch with him. dad was going out of his mind. finally around 5:30 the surgeon called and said the test were all clear and dad was free of any cancer cells. dad and mom almost passed out they were so relieved.

  Hi Sam
my weight is now down to a 474 grams which makes mom very happy . when i did my fall molt mo was expecting all those dark feathers to leave and nice fresh green ones appear. sadly more dark feathers came instead. even when mom looked at pictures of me she took this summer she wasn't happy with the way i looked. it seems that no matter what mom tries she can't pull me out of this liver disease. on saturday since mom has been terribly upset with how my feathers look so she started adding a 1/8 teaspoon of flax to my veggie and fruit mix twice a day. she also ordered from drs foster and smith Harrisons power treat pellets which among other things are also formulated to help feather changes in birds due to illness or old age. it says birds love them. well i don't! anyway i do like the flax seed which has a nutty flavor and it seems to have given me an energy boost. i am non stop playing all evening running around, shredding, screaming biting, playing with my big black ball throwing it and having a good old time. mom says it is exhausting but she is very happy.

dad also started the doggie on a new diet that contains flaxseed apples and alfalfa that is eerily similar to to the parrot 22 herb salad and almost smells the same. the doggie is also tolerating the strong new antibiotic for her bladder infection. dads back was very bad all weekend, he couldn't lay down or get up, and so mom had to do everything for him but it is slowly starting to feel better.

on Sunday mom spent so much time doing our thanksgiving pictures she was too tired to blog for us. then on monday dad saw blood in his urine which is very scary since his bladder cancer. the doctor said they got all the cancer when the surgeon basically gutted dad during his surgery. now we are waiting for results from the lab before the doctor says anything. mom has been so upset about this that she just couldn't blog anyone on bird channel.
