  Hi Chaka sweetie
I want to thank everybirdy for their prayers! Mila's family is truly grateful! We all know the power of prayer is a powerful thing...but we are all in shock over little Mila's progress. She had brain surgery 7:30am on Friday. When the surgeons went in, they discovered that some of what was tumor, was actually scar tissue from her surgery lastyyear, & sort of made a pocket that the larger tumor was sitting in. They were able to ENTIRELY remove BOTH tumors! On Saturday, she was moved to a regular room & they had her up walking! On Sunday, less than 48hrs upon completion of her surgery, MILA WAS SENT HOME...TRULY A MIRACLE!!!
Mila's family would still appreciate ur prayers. Since this cancer came back so quickly & aggressively, doctors are going to treat it very aggressively with chemo & radiation. Mila is doing wonderfullly! She has to take it easy, but she's up & playing with all of her princess toys! She'll walk up to u, give u a hug & tell u that she has a boo-boo & that herhhead hurts. It's truly amazing & miraculous! All things are possible with God!

  Hi Chaka sweetie
Hi everybirdy!
Tia here, sorry I haven't been around in quite awhile, sooooo much has been going on, I'll let u know all about it. Mom FINALLY unpacked the box that contained her notebook that has everybirdy's page #s! Today, mom & I ask for ur prayers.

A good friend of mom's has an adorable 4 yr old daughter, Mila. The past 14 months have been a horrific nightmare for Dawn, Mila's mother. Mila was born with Li Fraumeni Syndrome, which is an EXTREMELY RARE genetic condition. Certain receptors shut off & leaves that person very prone to cancer. Last summer, Mila began acting strangely...bobbing her head around, running into things, suddenly falling down & grabbing her head & screaming. Her pediatrician immediately ordered a brain MRI. Dawnh& Neil were devastated to learn that their precious 3 yr old daughter had Choroid Plexus Carcinoma, an EXTREMELY RARE & very aggressive brain cancer. Mila had brain surgery 3 days later. It was touch & go for the 1st week, they had to restart her heart 4 times. Miraculously, she made it thru, although she spent 3 months in intensive care. She was released fromthe hospital 2 days before Christmas...a true Christmas miracle...Mila had ABSOLUTELY NO mental deficit! Since then, she must have an MRI every 3 months. All of them had been perfectly spotless - until her MRI last week.

Mila now has 2 aggressive tumors - the larger one, the size of a small navel orange, & the other is a bit larger than a golfball. The larger one is in the same spot as the one removed last year, but it is tangled in her nerves & has been deemed inoperable. She will once again have to endure chemotherapy & this time start radiation. The smaller tumor will be removed. I just spoke to her mom Dawn, they will be leaving for Children's Hosp in Pittsburgh in a couple hrs. Mila will be having brain surgery tomorrow morning at 7:30am. to remove the smaller tumor & hopefully be able to remove part at least part of the larger one. We are all heartbroken that this precious little girl hasto go thru tthis again. I hope all our dear friends will say a special prayer for Mila, that God in Heaven will once again restore her health! Thank you my dear friends & God Bless u all.
Love
TiaMaria & mom Sandy

  Hi Chaka
Hello everyone, Chuey here with my very first BOTM blog. I am looking forward to a fun, and interesting month sharing each day with all my friends. Let me first begin by congratulating our new Queen Zeena on her awesome July campaign, and hope she enjoys her reign in the BC Castle,
The party is going strong over there and the food is greyt.
I plan this month on taking us all on an adventure and sharing some interesting information about birds along the way. I've asked my cousin SKY to provide us with his miniature ponies and horses so we can take a trail ride together. You'll need to bring along your sun screen and some extra clothes, just in case.
Today I want to take a moment to formally introduce myself as some of you might not know me yet. I am a very spoiled female Cockatiel who shares my cage and life with Mikey D. Mikey and I have one son, Kasper. Kasper is a very talented whistler and already can whistle the song " shortening bread". Kasper's photos are in my gallery.
I'm off to check on the ponies, but get ready to hit the trail tomorrow on day one of our adventure. "See ya later partners! "

  Hi Chaka
hello everybirdie. Zeena here on my final day of July. Today I want to take the time to thank you all for all the wonderful comments, and helpful topic input. When any bird runs for BOTM, it is a family affair. No one can make it to the BC Castle with out the help and votes of their many friends. I have met many awesome birds this month, and have learned a great deal about the various species we visited.
With a flock legacy of BOTMs to follow after, it was a challenge to equal their efforts and enthusiasm. Sky, Little Angel (Adler) and my frother Casey set the measure by which I hoped to inform and share with you. I had the most wonderful month. Thank you one and all.
This being my final BOTM Post I decided to stop by and visit with a beautiful and unusual species that is a delight to watch.

The Black Palm Cockatoo is considered to be the most beautiful of the Cockatoos.

However, the Palm Cockatoo is endangered in the wild and is mostly kept for breeding purposes. While the Palm Cockatoo is known for being loving and affectionate, just like any Cockatoo, they are also very needy. If you own a Cockatoo, then you know why they are called the "love sponges" of the parrots. And you also know that they are the most needy of all the pet birds and often love their owners too much.

Cockatoos require a lot of time and attention--much more than any other pet bird. If you are able to spend at least two full hours a day with your bird (out of his cage), not leave the house for 6 or more hours everyday, cook for your bird and provide him with a variety of healthy foods, handle the loud screaming, afford the large cage and huge amount of toys, and deal with the adjustment stage that can include aggression, then rescuing a Cockatoo might be a great idea. Make sure you research as much as possible because you don't want to add to the already out-of-hand rescue problem.

Because so many Cockatoos are left to rescues, I highly encourage you to visit your local parrot rescue, see what I'm talking about, and consider rescuing one of these poor majestic creatures instead of buying one in a store. If you can handle all this, then this really might be the right bird for you.

But keep in mind that Black Palm Cockatoos in particular are very hard to find. They can cost upwards of $16,000 because of their rarity and endangered status. So, don't get your hopes up if you have your mind set on this species.

  Hey Chaka
Hi everyone, Zeena, here with your Sunday BOTM POST. I want to take a moment to thank you all for all your support and votes during this month's BOTM campaign. Today, we will visit with some unique and usual Budgie mutations. Known by many names, Parakeet, Budgie, and officially Budgerigars. these fun-loving, friendly members of the avian family are loved the world over.

Feather Dusters
Feather Dusters are a rare mutation produced solely at random, mostly among English Budgies. These birds are huge compared to other budgies and have abnormally growing, very long feathers. As the name implies they do look rather like the feather dusters used for dusting furniture. They must eat constantly to try and supply their bodies with the nutrients they need because of the heavy demand put on them by the constant feather growth. They generally don't live more than a few months, cannot fly, and are usually blind. They are also thought to be deaf and may even be afflicted with what is known in humans as Down's Syndrome.

Half Siders

Half-Siders a randomly occurring rare mutation in which the bird is split right down the middle with each half representing a different color or variety. One side may be blue and one half green, one half normal and the other half pied, etc. When one of these is at a show, you can tell exactly where it is in the room because of all of the people standing in front of the cage doing double takes. As they say, you have to see it to believe it. Quarter-Siders, in which only one quarter of the body is affected, also occur.

CRESTED

In this variety, the feathers on top of the budgie's head point awry, forming a crest.
There are three types of crested budgies: full-circular crest, half-circular crest and the tufted crest.
Crested Budgies are both a random occurring mutation, and one for which breeders can breed to produce them. They are relatively rare and sell for upwards of $100US each and more depending on crest.
Helicopter Budgies

These unusual Budgies are bred to produce long, silkie feathers at the shoulder and upper wing margins. The more complete the covering the higher the quality and price. They are especially popular in Japan and Asia where pairs can sell for up to $55,000US

Hi Chaka--glad to see you back
Hi everyone, Happy TGIF. Today we will make a stop in India to visit a strange looking member of the avian world. The Wreathed Hornbill. These majestic birds are seen in Zoos and private collector's aviaries. The Wreathed Hornbill , also known as the Bar-pouched Wreathed Hornbill, is a species of Hornbill found in forests from far north-eastern India and Bhutan, east and south through mainland south-east Asia and the Greater Sundas, except Sulawesi. The Wreathed Hornbill is a large (4-8 pounds) black bird with a yellowish tail, red eyes, and a long, thick beak topped with a small 'wreathed' casque with up to 9 ridges. The male has a bright yellow inflatable throat pouch, while the female's is blue. It is suggested that the casque, which has a spongy hollow core, may serve as a resonating chamber for its harsh barking call, as a form of species recognition, and/or to convey health status. The first two cervical vertebrae are fused to help their neck support the extra weight of the large bill. Their 2nd and 3rd toes are partially fused to help them better grasp tree branches. Using droppings, mud, and fruit pulp, the female hornbill is renowned for walling itself into tree hollows for up to 41/2 months while nesting. The female leaves only a small slit through which its mate must pass all needed foodstuffs until their babies fledge.
The wreathed hornbill is an omnivorous feeder, eating mostly fruit. The male, however, will feed small animals such as bats, reptiles, frogs, crabs, and insects to the females and developing chicks. It can find food from the treetops to the forest floor as well as in water.
Captive breeding the Wreathed Hornbill is difficult but successful once specific requirements are provided. This species is intelligent and sensitive to change and it takse longer to form pairs; young males are vulnerable to bullying by older females; heated accommodation are absolutely necessary and a higher protein diet is needed for them to rear their chicks successfully. These and several other factors make them more difficult to maintain and breed compared to their African counterparts.
Chicks, when available sell to private breeders, and collectors for thousands of dollars each. This fact and their need for massive flights makes them unsuitable except for serious experienced collectors/breeders.
Tomorrow, we once more take a peak inside a nest box to discover what new is hatching inside.

  Hi Chaka
Happy Sunday to all my BC friends. Zeena here with a look at a species of bird, well reputed as THE best talker and mimicker. Once abundantly available at low prices, today an often difficult to find and much costly addition to ones Flockily. Momma Deb says as a child she recalls seeing a number of these interesting, entertaining birds kept in Pet Stores, and businesses. She has been searching for one for over ten years and only encounter one at a very costly price.
The Mynah, the loved and disliked Clown of the avian world.
The Common Myna (Acridotheres tristis), sometimes spelled Mynah, also sometimes known as "Indian Myna", is a member of the family Sturnidae (starlings and mynas) native to Asia. An omnivorous open woodland bird with a strong territorial instinct, the Myna has adapted extremely well to urban environments. The Common Myna is an important motif in Indian culture and appears both in Sanskrit and Prakrit literature. "Myna" is derived from the Hindi language maina which itself is derived from Sanskrit madana.

The range of the Common Myna is increasing at such a rapid rate that in 2000 the IUCN Species Survival Commission declared it one of the world's most invasive species and one of only three birds in the top 100 species that pose an impact to biodiversity, agriculture and human interests. In particular, the species poses a serious threat to the ecosystems of Australia where it was named "The Most Important Pest/Problem".

Mynahs are a lively, confident, aggressive, and noisy bird. It is friendly and perky, and the large flocks that gather at roosting time are usually raucous and grouchy. As pets they have many redeeming qualities including an inmate ability to mimic sounds, whistles and human speech. Once quite common in the pet trade, they now are difficult to locate. The Greater and Lesser Hill Mynahs are most thought of when imaging a Mynah Bird. Their clownish, outgoing personalities winning many a fan in years past.

Mynah's eat a mixture of specially formulated insect mash and fresh foods. Like the Lories, they have watery, odorous droppings, making them difficult to maintain in a home environment. those who endure the mess speak lovingly of their companions who seem to adore children, and adults alike. Daily cage washing, bathing and out of cage time are mandatory for good health. Momma Deb recalls that in her childhood most Mynah's were caged in small cramped cages, eating a diet of sunflower seeds and fruit. Thus living a miserable, short life. As advances came, it was found that Mynah's must have a balanced, more natural diet, and lots of room to move around in their cages. Bonded pairs breed readily in captivity. Babies that are hand-reared average $1200 to 1500 each when available. Bali Mynah's are rare and costly when available.

I wish to thank all my friends here on C for their daily support, and words of encouragement.

  hi chaka
Good afternoon my dear BC friends, Zeena here with today's BOTM blog. We will once more make a stop in South American to visit one of natures very interesting and unique inhabitants. Our host is one of aviculture's beautiful, and unusual songbirds. The Green Oropendola. The Green Oropendola is of exclusively Amazonian distribution. The Green Oropendola (Psarocolius viridis) is generally common in its wooded habitats that are found in the Amazon and Guianas of South America; specifically Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Peru, Suriname, and Venezuela. Largely pale green above, the posterior underparts and rump are chestnut, and the tail is largely yellow except for the central rectrices. The bill is green basally, becoming red towards the tip, and the skin around the eyes and lores is pink. Males and females are similar in plumage, but the latter sex is substantially smaller. Like most oropendolas, this species breeds in colonies, usually of five to ten pairs, and constructing a hanging ‘basket’ nest of woven plant fibers. The species’ displays are similar to those of the Crested Oropendola (Psarocolius decumanus).
Related common species include such song-birds as the Meadow Lark, Bobo-Link and Bullock's Oriole to name but a few.
The Green Oropendola eats a diet of fresh fruits, insects, mynah bird food and nectar in captivity. An active, high energy species these birds require a large, long flight to maintain them in good condition. Somewhat difficult to breed, these beautiful birds require an aviary suitable to house a number of mature pairs to have any success in nesting and rearing offspring. Hand reared babies of the Green Oropendola are occasionally available but do not tend to retain tameness once weaned. In the wild they typically nest in colonies similarly to Quaker Parrots, building their hanging basket-like nests in a common tree. Captive breeding is seeing an increase in successful clutches being raised to fledging and adulthood.
These are definitely not a species for the beginner avicultarist, and their pricy purchase costs in excess of $850.00US each leaves them to the more well off and experienced collectors. Their song is soft and melodious, a pleasure to listen to. Their call is often described as flute-like and low.
Tomorrow we will visit with a wonderful, entertaining species of bird, that once filled many living rooms, but today is rare both in captivity and their wild habitat.
I wish to thank all my many friends for their loving support on my quest to be August's BOTM. I couldn't make it without all of you.

  Hi Chaka
Hello everybird, Zeena here with today's BOTM blog. First I wish all my US friends a happy and safe 4th of July Holiday. It is also the day that my little fister Little Angel will marry her beloved Dixie. Their wedding will take place on the BC Castle page number 239094. All are invited to join these two "love-birds" this evening at 6PM Eastern Time as they share their vows of love. The reception will follow on the same page. Today we will take a peek into a few nesting boxes around the world and see what we find. Come on, let's be very quiet, as we explore the many new Blue and Gold Macaw mutations .Color Mutations are considered "pure" birds. They occur in nature, although rarely and if they do, they often don't survive long, if the "new color" is too vibrant and they are easily visible by predators.

Color mutations in captivity are perpetuated by breeding like colored birds to like colored birds (of two birds that carry the color gene). The resultant offspring will often be the color that is desired. Hybrids are the crossing of two species, whereas mutations occur spontaneously.

Most of us know the Blue and Yellow Macaw. Many of us own one or more, however there are some really eggciting new mutations I'd like us to take a look at. We are most familiar with the typical blue and Gold. However there is a larger variant from Bolivia called the Bolivian Blue and Gold Macaw. The Bolivian variety is distinguished by its larger size and its coloring. On all these Macaws the colors are vibrant, but the Bolivian has more of a true blue rather than the teal blue seen in the average Blue and Gold. They all share the same wonderful personality and characteristics.

The Bolivian Blue and Gold Macaw is a variant originating only in Bolivia. It looks just like the typical Blue and Gold, however, it is much larger. A mutation of the Blue and Gold Macaw has also been reported where the yellow coloring is absent creating a blue and white bird. Although seldom seen or available there are many new mutations being bred. Many sell for over $50,0US each.
Momma Deb told me she would love to have one of each, they are so beautiful, I am certain you will have to agree.
