Rico and Paulie were hand fed babies who went to live with a young girl who wanted a companion bird. However, they bonded with each other instead of her. Disappointed, she decided to get a cockatiel, and her mother said the budgies had to go. A mutual friend thought we would give them a good home, so we took them in..

Hi! My name is Rico & Paulie - the Ninja Budgies

I am a Budgerigar from Brook Park, OH.

The Ninja Budgies, because we are always finding their feathers in the oddest places. We suspect they sneak out of their cage at night and do ninja things, leaving only a stray feather as evidence. And Rico is sometimes called Stalker Budgie because he will follow Annie the 'tiel EVERYWHERE.

4 years old   M

Budgerigar

Millet

The top of the bookcase, the 'tiels playgym (it's much more fun than their own) and in their swing.

Being held, spray baths, and having their picture taken.

They don't love anything about us except the food and the fact we pretty much let them do their own thing!

Nonstop chirping. We pretend that they love Queen music and are actually singing Queen songs in budgie language. Their daily squabbles are over who gets to be Freddie..

"I'm Freddie!" "No, I'M Freddie!" "No, I am!" ad infinitum.

  Lifespan of a Diamond Dove
The lifespan of the diamond dove is different in captivity than if living in the wild.

In captivity, the diamond dove usually lives about 12-15 years. With proper care, they can even live into their 20's.

In the wild, however, diamond doves only live 3-5 years.

  Hi Rico and Paulie
Please know that we will always be happy to help out in NTT for you!We are so honored that you would ask us to be there for you! How awful that the poor Cuddler has to have the PRK but as long as she will get the same result that will be soo awesome,no glasses and no contacts!Mom will keep putting both the Cuddler's name and the Edible One's name in the special intentions book at church each week for a full week with lots more prayers for them both! Please let us know how she is doing as we are all worried about both her and the Edible One!Who will be there to help take care of them both now?We are all so happy that she is finally going to get this done! It's almost like a dream come true for the Cuddler!
Mom so agrees with that window of starting handfeeding! It makes a difference even though the babies may only be several hours apart, its just so weird how that works out!Floyd seems like he got all the nourishment in the egg and was a nice big baby! That is so funny for a baby tiel not to want to handfeed! They are always such pigs and squeal loudly and do their rocking thing to get the food!Colleen and Wallace sound so sweet and they all must be so precious!Mom just loves going to see the baby tiels at the pet shop, they keep the parronts in a separate glass tank as the babies are all handfed there!
We had a nice day here yesterday,in the 60's with some warm sunshine,Mom even had us all out on the deck giving us our birdicures,Kallie got his beak done today with skin sis's help,he kept sticking his tongue out and Mom was a wreck trying not to dremmel his tongue!Celine got her beak dremmeled also and she was surprisingly good today!Mom had wanted to get us all out on the deck today but it was really cold, the sun was out and the temperatures were in the 60's but the breeze kept it from getting warm!So disappointing,we can't wait to get outside!Yesterday Mom had Mario and Peepers out on the deck preening them, those two tiels sure can create their own snowstorm inside! You should've seen their tiel dust outside on the deck and taking off in the breeze!
How can one have temperatures in the 70's one day and snow and 37 a few days later? Its April already and Easter is just a week away!
We are more than happy to do NTT for as long as you need us too or want us to!We are always so honored to be able to be there for you anytime anywhere!
Wishing you a greyt day and we're sending you all our love along with warm birdie hugs and soft beakie kisses and give everyone there all our love from everyone here!Loving you always and forever,Dixie&Kallie
Ps we have the list of songs in NTT already for the week!Got it done as soon as we got the message! I do hope we did all right!LOL!

  Vocalization
Doves are relatively quiet birds. They make a variety of soft, low-pinched cooing sounds. Their cooing, however, may be persistent and repetitive. Many people find the cooing very pleasant.

  Supplements
Your dove should be given a vitamin/mineral supplement to assure you are providing all the nutrients it needs, especially if it is a finicky eater.

Note: Although the directions may tell you to put the vitamins in water, this is not good to do. Vitamins can settle to the bottom or lose its potency. It is best to put the supplement on soft foods or moist fruits or vegetables.

In addition to a vitamin/mineral supplement, doves need a small amount of grit. Unlike most birds, doves swallow their seeds whole and grit helps to digest them.

There are two kinds of grit:

Indigestible grit, which is sand or bits of ground rock. However, if your bird overeats this, it can become sick.

Digestible grit such as oyster shell, ground cuttlebone, or crushed eggshells pass safely through their system and is also a good source of calcium.

  A Healthy Diet (Continued)
PROTEIN

In addition to fruits and vegetables, you need to include protein in your dove's diet.

Insects are a good source of protein, although they are not necessary for your dove. You can either give them live insects or dried ones.

Another good source of protein are chopped hard-boiled eggs. This is important for breeding doves that are raising chicks. Crushed egg shells mixed in with the egg will provide calcium with the protein. Note: Eggs must be cooked thoroughly. Your bird can become sick from partially or uncooked eggs.

You can also give your dove tiny bits of thoroughly cooked meat or bits of cheese. However, this should be given only rarely and as a special treat.

  A Healthy Diet
FRUITS AND VEGETABLES

Although all common pet doves are in the seed-eaters group, there are additional foods that can be a part their diet.

Seed-eating doves cannot tolerate large amounts of high-water-content foods. However, a daily treat of fresh food is fine for most doves.

Fruits and vegetables are a good source of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. When choosing produce, (one's that are safe for birds) bright colors are the healthiest choice. Example: sweet potatoes are more nutritious than white potatoes, red peppers have more vitamins than green peppers, and red grapes are higher in antioxidants than green grapes. Dark leafy green vegetables are also nutritious.

Some of the most favorite foods of the dove include:
shredded greens, grated carrots, finely chopped broccoli florets, diced apple, berries, fresh corn and peas. Your dove may not like all these foods, but as you experiment with differents ones, you will find that they may be some of their favorites.

SETTING UP YOUR DOVE'S CAGE

Doves, like other pet birds, need a variety of perches to keep their feet exercised and comfortable. However, they do spend much of their time on the bottom of the cage, as I had mentioned in yesterday's blog. You can remove the wire tray at the bottom of the cage so your dove can walk comfortably. Besides your dove walking on the bottom and pecking for food, they spend a lot of time sitting at the bottom as well.

Doves also enjoy sitting in a nest. You will need to purchase a canary nest or you can make one of your own.

You will not need to purchase anything for your dove to play with. Doves do not play with toys or on a playgym.

PURCHASING A CAGE

When purchasing a cage for a single or pair of ringneck or diamond doves, the measurements of the cage should be at least 24 inches in length, 16 inches wide and 18-24 inches in height.

Unlike parrots, doves do not climb, so the length of the cage is more important than the height.

However, doves do need to room to flap their wings and fly. They also spend a lot of time walking around on the bottom of the cage, so the bigger the cage, the better.

  Hi Rico and Paulie
We look forward to NTT every week!Without NTT the week starts off so drab, dull and empty feeling, you always make it bright and fun!
How sad that the Cuddler's Mom 's surgery got postponed but at least she gets a break for a little bit and like you said hopefully she won't be leaving right after work, that would be way too much to have to endure!
Mom and all of us here are praying for the Lasik surgeries to go smoothly for the Cuddler and Mom has been putting her name in the special intentions book at church every week along with the Edible one and the Cuddler's Mom.We all can't wait to have the Cuddler enjoy looking at the world again without glasses or contacts,it sounds just so eggciting and we are all so happy for her! That's a long time to have to wear glasses and contacts!
I will have Mom send you some of the photos that she can do for NTT!We just want to find a way to get every one to come to NTT every week!We love you so much and would do anything to be there for you!You mean the world to us and we are the ones who are so blessed to have you in our lives!
Mom just has to remember to make sure that Kallie isn't out when Candida is out so when Candi shares dinner with dad our door gets shut so Candida won't be in fear of getting attacked!Mom is losing it when she flies out the door and forgets to put our dishes back in our cages after she cleans our cages!Mario and Peepers were screaming so loud when she came home that day!Its a good thing she gave us all our bean mix before she left us for the day!
Those baby tiels sure must be so sweet along with being mouthy!Oh how much fun that Floyd,Colleen and Wallace are going to have at the Breeder's with the other 10 babies, and Floyd will have a big learning experience as he gets tamed down some!At least they'll have a group of their own to hang out with and be tiels!
We are starting to get some warmer days here, today it was 52 degrees with weak sun and mostly clouds,we're getting lots of rain later on tonight!
Wishing you a greyt day and we're sending you all our love along with warm birdie hugs and soft beakie kisses!Loving you always and forever,Dixie&Kallie

DETERMINING THE GENDER OF THE IMMATURE DOVE

If you decide to purchase a pair of young doves, you may want to buy a male and female.
The only way to determine the gender of the immature dove would be to submit a blood sample for DNA analysis or have your vet examine them endoscopically.

The DNA sexing is simple and noninvasive. It is performed from a drop of blood from a clipped toenail or emerging blood feather.

Some pet stores can have this done for you or your vet can perform the test. You may want to have this done if you are interested in breeding your doves in the future.

  Doves As Pets
INTRODUCTION

Doves are gentle birds that are hardy. They are quiet birds, have a peaceful nature, and don't require as much complicated care as other species of birds. This makes them a good pet for the beginner.
Diamond doves are even good pets for young children as long as an adult supervises the care.
Since doves are quiet birds, they are good to keep in apartments where you may not be able to keep a noisy parrot.

Doves can be kept as single pets or in pairs but they do better in pairs. If you keep a single dove be prepared to give it lots of attention and interaction.

  Introduction to Doves (Conclusion)
Doves are divided into two groups: seed-eaters and fruit-eaters. Fruit-eaters are difficult birds to maintain in captivity and are not suitable as pets. All common pet doves are in the seed-eating group. (However, doves need food, in addition to their seeds, that I will mention at a later time in a blog on diets.) The most common pet doves are the diamond dove and the ringneck dove.

This week I have introduced doves and gave you information, which included their family, their origin,
and even how diamond doves acquired their name. I hope you found this information interesting as well as educational.

Next week, I will provide information on the care of doves as pets.

  The Diamond Dove's Origin,
The diamond dove is native to Australia. They exist near water but where it is lightly or semi-dry, which is in Central, West, and Northern Australia. They are occasionally seen in Southern Australia in parks and gardens in the Centre(the sparsely inhabited central region of Australia) where it is very dry.

As part of my BOTM campaign, I will be taking a trip to my native country to see some of the tourist attractions. If any of my BC friends would like to join me for this adventure, please let me know in your blog. Our prayers will never stop coming for the sweet Cuddler and the Edible one ever,Mom will always be putting their names in the special intentions book at church for a full week of healing prayers and lots of them! And she'll be adding the Cuddler's Mom also for prayers of healing and comfort from pain.We feel so bad for the Cuddler, working long hours and then having to drive 3 1/2 hours to the city to be with her Mom.She will always be in our thoughts and prayers as will the Edible One for some improvement in healing also. And we will be thinking of the BW and the Feeder as they are there with him caring for him!Such awesome kids they are to do that too!
I'll bet you miss each other though being separated like that but each of you being with your girls may help ease the stress of not being around each other.I'll bet Betty and Calypso are happy to be spending all their time with each of you now!
Candida is doing fine now and she is being very fresh and won't let Mom take her back to her cage now,Mom can't even catch her in the net so Mom has to keep her flying until she poops out and falls to the floor! Its very frustrating when Mom has to get out of the house on time in the mornings! She even did it tonight,Mom lets her spend time with dad,she loves to eat with him and will eat whatever he has on his plate but when Mom tries to give her something she refuses to even look at it!Mom has got to be careful now that Kallie isn't out when Candida is out and now he gets really upset and starts ripping his cage tray paper when Candida makes him wait!Mom sure can't understand or figure it out just why we like or don't like a certain frother or fister! It just doesn't make sense to her!But then Kallie is so spoiled,he has free flight of the house when Mom is home all day!
Oh I can just see how precious they are those baby tiels! They must be so sweet with that hissing sound they make and I'll bet they'll be sooo loud once the handfeeding begins!Mom cleaned our cages the other morning and gave us all bean mix and forgot to put their pellets back in their cage, did Mom get an earful when she came home that night!Dad gave us all a peanut and they even ate theirs!Mom has never seen a tiel eat a peanut before!
We love NTT and we are trying to get lots more to see how wonderful and fun it is!Skin sis will make neat photos for those who play it but maybe you and us can figure out how to make it work!Mom is no good at organizing things!

Introduction to Doves (Continued)
BEAKS

Doves have a narrow beak that is slightly curved at the tip. Unlike most birds, doves drink by sucking up water through their beak like a straw, without tilting their head back to swallow. The base of their beak is relatively soft and hardens toward the tip.

LEGS

Their legs are relatively short and clearly scaled. They have strong feet and nails. Their toes are anisodactyl, which means that three toes are pointed forward and one backward.

HOW THE DIAMOND DOVES ACQUIRED THEIR NAME

The diamond dove has approximately 17 color mutations.
Their normal coloration is brownish gray to gray with an abdomen that is a creamy white color.
Adults have coral-colored eye rings, an olive brown beak, and flesh colored feet and legs.
They have specks on their feathers that looks like they were sprinkled with diamond dust. This is how diamond doves got their name.

  What Are Doves?
Doves are small pigeons, although there are differences between them. Pigeons are larger and stockier whereas doves are smaller and sleeker. However, there are exceptions to this rule.
Both doves and pigeons are muscular with short necks and heads on stout bodies. Their long wings are powered by flight muscles, which can make up to approximately 40% of their body weight.
The diamond dove, which only grows about 6 to 8 inches and weighs approximately an ounce, is the smallest dove.

Dad is having a good week off so far and the weather has been cooperating with him!Nana is just so upset that she can't do things on her own and that she tires so easily!
Mom is getting used to being on the treadmill again after not being on it for three years!Mom tried the ellipticals and they wore her out after the first 15 minutes and she spent the rest of the time on the treadmill! Its so hard to fit everything in when you've got so many things to do all the time! The job market is sooo sad these days and you are so right about how you should get what you can until something better comes along! How awful that the Cuddler had to take that large cut in pay like that! And to not even get any raises to compensate for it is really sad!It seems like this whole world is coming to a crashing end!Between the Obama Care and the Affordable Care Act all of us are getting a bum deal on everything where health care is concerned. It seems like its getting harder and harder to get work these days to support yourself much less the health care that one can't really afford to have. And there are just so many that are losing everything just trying to make ends meet!We so agree with you,if the big hospitals are having a hard time how are the smaller ones going to be able to flourish in today's economy?
How is the Edible One doing? Our prayers go out to him and Mom is going to put his name and the Cuddler's name in the book of special intentions at church tomorrow when she goes! How is the BW doing? This sure has been a long cold snowy winter and we are all so looking forward to a warm Spring!
Its sooo good to hear from you and you have made our day so much brighter! We are wishing you a greyt day and I'm sending you all our love along with warm birdie hugs and soft beakie kisses! Loving you always and forever,Dixie and Kallie

Come visit me, Gabbie, Kallie, Peepers & Dixie.

  Hi Rico and Paulie
We are so sorry it has been a month since our last blogging but the parront has been busy working 5am to 1:30pm for the last 8 weeks. She needs to save some money and also to pay home and car insurance. The A/C broke and she does not know yet how much will be the cost to repair it. The weather is getting hot here already. She also needs a new car, so many expenses.

On Monday 24February she got her first injection on the lower back, there was no much improvement after it, last Monday she got 2 more injections on her lower back, so far her lower back is not bothering her. On Monday 31 she will have another injection on the cervical area.

Also the computer is getting slow, and she does not understand windows 8 yet so she could start using her new laptop.

This is our current situation. Since she is very busy we don't know yet when we will be able to blog again.

This is all for know

See you soon
have a greyt one
be a good birdie
Beaky kisses and V4U
Truly Yours, Baby

  Hi Rico and Paulie
Oh such greyt news to hear that Betty's top beak is growing back! Mom knew about things like that as long as the cartilage and the nerves were still there the beak would always grow back in again! We are sooo sooo happy for Betty! She will need lots of dremmiling done to keep her beak from growing scissor like until it all comes in and can rest on the bottom beak naturally! How awesome that Tangette is getting a new forever home with someone who loves her!I'll bet that Rico will miss Paulie when he's gone from them after being together all this time!
We are so happy that the Cuddler and the Edible One didn't have to go out in that horrible ice storm, its not worth going out and getting hurt or worse when those storms are in the forecast! We always worry about you there and are so happy you were safe and sound at home!
Those new tiel babies must be sooo adorable and sweet and how beautiful they must be with Butterball and Apollo's markings, but how could they abandon them right before they had a week to go like that? They are so lucky to have sweet Annie and Valentine to look out and take over for them and keep their babies safe!Annie was always such a sweet Mom and loved her job!But Valentine wants to de crest them, now that's not very nice of him to do that to them!Maybe he wants baby Keets instead?
My dad finally got rid of that lingering cold he's had for so long and he's taking this week off from work as a vacation week so he can rest up for the street sweeping which begins next month, those will be long days getting all the sand up from the roads that was put down because they ran out of Ice Ban and salt!Nana is still having trouble with double vision and the new glasses she got with the prisms in them are helping a little when she wears them when Mom drives her in the car and helps her while she is in the stores! She wants so bad to drive herself around at least to the places that are near her but Mom is a little leary about her doing that just yet!Plus she has all the aches and pains of arthritis that are always bothering her on certain days! She keeps telling Mom that she's lived too long!Especially when the Drs don't do anything for her or listen to what she is trying to tell them!Skin sis joined a gym and is having Mom as her guest so now Mom goes to the gym with skin sis every Sunday and Wednesday as those are her days off right now!Skin bro is still looking for work and is having a hard time paying his bills,he's being so picky about what he will take,Mom and Nana try to tell him something part time is better than nothing at all!
Mom put the Cuddler's name and the Edible Ones name in the special intentions book in church for another full week of healing prayers for peace and comfort and she will keep putting their names in each and every week!We all love you sooo much and are so blessed to have your friendship and love that we so cherish! You all mean the world to us and there's not a day goes by that we don't think of you all!Our praye

  Hi Rico and Paulie
We both can't thank you enough for our new juke box!We were never so surprised and so thrilled to get it!NTT is just so much fun and we wouldn't miss it for the world! Its the bright spot in our week!
I think that the organic coconut oil might just be as good as the mineral oil anything to help keep her comfortable and her beak from falling off!Its so good to hear that she's eating her egg food and is getting along well, these broken beaks are soo scary and you never know how it will end up and they take alot of caring over too!Oh poor Rico,I think that you're right about him just trying to protect his girl, budgies are quite monogamous contrary to what people think, they usually mate for life!I've had some keets who when they lost their mate died of a broken heart and wouldn't mate with anyone else,it was so sad!I'll bet Rico is really happy about that cage mate deal! He's got his pick of the crop there with three girls! If the cere is bluish it sounds like Calypso is a boy!
Such great news that the breeder is feeling better again and can take care of her babies again! What an incredible thing she did by getting that baby sunnie to wean, they are very hard to wean,Kallie did the same thing only he took all his formula to all the other babies in the aviary and fed it to them! That B&G baby must be so awesome! Its a good thing you're not in the aviary now,no telling what that big beak can do to a little keet like you! Please give the sweet BW a hug from us all here to help her feel better! How awesome that she's been accepted into the private girls school next year! That is just sooo fantastic! She must be sooo thrilled! Please give her all our congratulations! We always knew she was special and so incredible! And to have a friend help with the tuition is so nice! You just don't find chances like that everyday with people willing to help also! Now the moving part may not be so much fun!But having a big flight cage will really help you feel like you're in an aviary so you won't be missing it anymore!
Our prayers have been going out for the Edible one and the Cuddler each and everyday and Mom has been putting their names in the special intentions book at church each and every week for healing prayers of comfort! Its so good to hear that he's doing better and our prayers will never stop for either of them!Oh can my Mom understand about all those copays and constant drs appointments! They really keep you going and your pockets get emptied out fast also! Please let us know how both the Edible One and the Cuddler are doing with their drs appointments,we never stop thinking of them and they are constantly in our thoughts and prayers each and every day!
My dad was so happy today that he didn't have to leave the whole weekend! Now Wednesday/Thursday will be another matter as we are supposed to get more snow then!We too haven't seen any crocuses and keep looking all the time, its about time spring gets here and soon!
Loving you always and forever,Dixie and Kallie

  Oh my goodness Ninjas !
Sounds like you're living in a crazy house ! (I know - NOT pc) I'm sure your happy chatter makes mom feel happier about all that's on her plate ! At least she is taking time off to take care of all of you . . . especially the edible one - he's had a tough go of it, huh ? We'll say prayers :

I run for the bus dear
while riding I think of us dear . . .

And the skins ? How's school going for them ? Mom has almost NO spring break - have to make up all the snow days :( UGH !

Be good ! Don't make any more work or trouble for your dear caretaker ! love Cookie

  Hi Rico and Paulie
I would never hurt a sweet little parakeet and I'm all for anybirdie sharing my toys! I love anybirdie who will preen me and who I can sit and preen too! Mom won't let me stay with Dixie for too long and only unless she's in the room with us because she's so afraid that Dixie will fall and get hurt,he can no longer sit on a perch without falling because of his gout! I would definitely love to share my things with you two and little Betty too!
I'm so spoiled and refused to be caged and I can see just how you're feeling!Whenever Mom's home I'm out of my cage from the time she wakes us all up to the time after dinner when we all go to the TV room to go in my sleeping box for the night until Mom and Dad go to bed then I go back to my cage, but if dad is working all night and not coming home I get to sleep there all night!
Loving you always and forever,Kallie

on his way to getting better! We sure have had enough of this long cold, snowy winter and could use some warm sunshine on our feathers and faces and see all the flowers start blooming and the birdies singing outside again! This is one of the worst winters ever, everyone needs a little sunshine now to make things brighter!
Wishing you a greyt day and I'm sending you all my love along with warm birdie hugs and soft beakie kisses to everyone there from everyone here,Loving you always and forever,Dixie and Kallie, and flock,Mom,Dad,Nana and Trixie II We all love you sooo very much! Please give the Edible One all our love and a warm hug to make him feel better and the Cuddler a warm hug also from my Mom and Nana too!

  Hi Rico and Paulie
Oh you never have to apologize to us for not getting back to us!We know just how much your poor typist has on her plate right now!Oh how awful about the Edible One,we have been praying non stop for him and Mom's been putting his name in the special intentions book at church every week for lots more prayers for healing and comfort and peace! Its sooo good to hear that he is doing so much better now,we were all so worried about him and The Cuddler with all that she's going through herself!Mom and I sooo understand just how stressful these things can be!Its so frightening at times also!
Poor Betty, that really doesn't too good her beak getting black like that. She is in our thoughts and prayers constantly and not a moment goes by that we don't think of her,the Edible One and the Cuddler!Have you tried rubbing her beak with mineral oil to keep her beak from drying out and breaking off?The same thing is happening to me(Dixie)Mom has to dremmel my top beak as my bottom one overgrows scissors like so every two weeks Mom has to dremmel both my upper and lower beaks so that I can eat and open my mouth! We sure don't blame you for not like living in a cage after being free flighted for so long!(Kallie agrees to that one)every time Mom puts him in the cage he yells his head off and is standing at the door waiting for it to open!He learned how to let himself out of his cage and get everyone else out of theirs also! And Mom had to get special locks so he couldn't get them out or himself out either! And Mom has to keep Kallie separated from our baby fister Candida, because he'll kill her,he's gotten her down and was rolling all over the floor with her trying to hurt her,I just don't know what goes on inside these sunnies heads of theirs!Candida did nothing to provoke his wrath on her and yet he hates her!
This has been the worst winter ever and the longest! We had more snow last night again and woke up to a white world again,it's so cold and no sun here today and all we can do is pray for spring to come really fast!I do hope we all see more robins coming our way too!And as for the crocuses they're probably buried under all this snow and frozen to their roots!
Poor Annie must've been so disappointed in not having her babies survive! How sweet of Butterball to let her sit on two of her eggs!I can't wait for you to tell me what they look like when they hatch out!It sounds like Valentine is such a very protective daddy for his babies! And that's just what happened all that lunging kind of ruined the eggs!Mom's had that happen when she used to raise budgies, she made sure she stayed away from the box until the babies were hatched! Our wings will be crossed and our prayers will be going out to Butterball that her babies all will hatch with no more incidents!
My dad is so tired of working non stop with all these storms and it always seems like they come on the weekend so he never gets to have one!He never got a long holiday weekend either and I think that he's finally o
