Awhile after losing my beloved Bailey, my husband found a bird on the internet. He asked if I liked it. I said yes, but I'm not ready. He said you will never be ready so let's go get the bird. We drove 945 round trip miles in the middle of October in the rain to Ohio. We found "him" (they thought it was a boy) in a small cage. The wings were severely cut, nails in bad shape, and tail shredded and broken. They got the bird at 10 weeks and had "him" a year. "He" never had a name, and they didn't handle the bird much. But they did teach him to step up and say "What are you doing"! They said, we are asking a good price because we don't want the bird. Well, the bird came home with us, an eight hour drive. After our vet saw the bird, it's a girl and she has a respiratory infection. She wasn't properly cared for so, she will always be small for a YCM. Named after a song we heard on the way home - David Bowie's China Girl, please welcome ...our little CHYNA girl.

  Hi Chyna
Ha, hope you had a good walk! Mom just bought one of those treat pouches that attaches to a belt loop. I'd love for you to find me a hat for the derby, blue or aqua would be nice, thanks.
Yesterday the guy came to measure the kitchen for new cabinets. Mom chose a honey color, because it's a small room and the wood in there is too dark. I kept yelling while he was here, telling mom that a stranger was in the house, and she should watch out. Daisy helped, too, by barking a lot. He made some suggestions about a lazy susan in one corner cabinet, putting one over the fridge, and installing a microwave over the stove, freeing up that space for a closed cabinet instead of a shelf. The guys who are going to do the work will get back to mom after Easter, so she'll be able to see what the cost is. She still wants a new stove, as the one we have is 40 years old and the oven doesn't heat evenly any more. We'll see, though, what the cost is before mom does any shopping.
Our cleaning lady told mom there is a Sears outlet store close by where she can look at floor models and but them at a discount, so it's one more thing to consider.
Today I think mom will finish shopping for the groceries needed to make the wedding soup, the ham, and the Easter Bread. She will wait until Debbie, the cleaning lady, is finished, though.
Guess what mom saw when she went out to feed the new squirrels today? There were catkins on the willow, tiny buds on the forsythia, and 2 brave little crocuses in bloom! It looks like spring is finally getting here!
I hope you are having a great day and getting tons of cuddles and scritches. Hugs, Falco

  Hi Chyna.
It's Alex.
Yesterday was free movie day so mom and dad saw "Paddington". It was a good movie. The animation was great. From there they stopped at Walmart for tomatoes and then went to visit their friend in the rehab place. His new place is a private home and is really nice and the staff is friendly. He'll be there for about three more weeks and then he goes home.
Today will be partly cloudy, with a high of 77 and a low of 52.
Hope your day is fun.
Hugs,
Alex.

...Ziggy & LaLo have derby hats but Jenny only has racing helmets, our picture maker is prepping for Springtime at the McFarm, but we are working on her! We don't need world class pics, we never win anything anyway, we just want to be a part of the derby parade, we love participating! THE SNOW WILL GO, be patient! Happy April Fool's Day, we do not know much about it or how it started but is is always a fun day! Our weather is like a quiet parrot, it makes ya wonder what is coming next! We sent our money to aunt Sunny for admission to the new web sight, but we are not so certain about Felix LaFollett's possible sight, we do not need advice, we want friendship, and we do a lot for our parrot friends in need of rescue, as much as anybody we know, but the money can only go so far and our dad will never short change any of us!   Hi Chyna
Hello everybirdie, Mikey D here to introduce myself to you and our upcoming BOTM campaign. Most of our BC family will remember my beautiful wife-bird Chuey and her BOTM Cattle Drive. After giving my campaign greyt thought I have decided to step back into the history of the United States. It was made easier for me when I recently received a message that the Beakerton Security Company asking for help with a special, secret mission.
It appears that that rascal Black Bart has popped his head back up this time robbing stagecoaches and wagon trains owned by the Beakerton Security Company. Our mission is to take a special load of Parrot Treats from Texas to the sunny state of California by Mule Train. The convoy of wagons will leave Texas and travel through some mighty dangerous, formidable territory. That is where you come in. i need your help in driving these ornery sometimes stubborn long-eared mules, in driving our herd of cattle and replacement horses and mules, and most of all guarding our precious cargo of Nutri-berries and other treats safely to those hungry beaks in California.
Most of you have your saddle horse already, so you'll "ole need be catchin' it up, and pack your saddle bags fer our "Wild West Adventure." Might I add you'd best be polishin' yer guns too, with Black Bart and his band of dirty low-down scoundrels on the lamb you just might be needing it pretty soon.
Now for a wee bit of history on the Wagon Trains of the USA.
By 1836 when Texas gained its independence San Antonio's population had fallen from a peak of around six thousand in 1800 to under one thousand. When Texas became a state in 1845, two very important factors revitalized the city and the surrounding area. The US Army arrived and soon established a series of ten forts to the west of the city, and the second influence was the US Postal Service who began the slow process of building roads across the state into adjoining states.
Mules had advantages over both oxen and horses. Bred from a female horse and a male donkey, the animals were about half way in size between the two. They were strong and sure footed. They lacked the free spirited nature of horses and were, indeed, creatures of habit. A good CAPORAL, the name given to the person in any wagon train in charge of the animals, had only to crack his whip in the morning for the mules to line up not only in front of its assigned wagon but even its assigned place within the team, which could consist of between six and eight animals. Unlike oxen, they did not rely entirely on foraging for the food but had to be fed from foldaway troughs at regular intervals. Their skin could withstand a lot of chafing from pulling heavy loads but was not water proof. They did have one huge disadvantage over oxen. The Oxen interested thieves not at all while mules were highly prized plunder.
See ya tomorrow
Mikey D

Come visit me, MIKEY D, Steppin' back in history for BOTM April, birdie haven park, CHUEY, sweetpea, thanks for botd, zoey & cricket & nakita.

  Hi, Chyna
Thanks for the congrats. Such fun to be royalty and spend the day in the Castle. We enjoyed watching the old BOTM depart and welcome the new one being crowned.

Oh, forgot that webcams could be viewed from other locations. Generally we watch ones in our area (ones close enough to visit if wanted to). That is good the eagles are returning to PA and hopefully will thrive.

Temps here dropped back to the low 70s and is windier but still sunny and nice. Rather have some rain. We'll see if we get some next week as forecast. Hopefully you'll warm up and have all that snow melt away.

Have a great day, wing hugs and a vote, Pearl and Silver.

Ummm, yes I remember very well that the folks abandoned me during the one tornado scare ... mom and dad swear that will never happen again ... birdsonally I think we should test the action plan to be SURE LOL.

  Happy humpday Chyna !
a poem by Dorothy D. Warner :

I saw a cowslip through the fence
A horsefly in the store,
I saw a boardwalk up the street
A stone step by the door
I saw a mill race up the road
A daybreak through the gloom
I saw a nightfall on my lawn
A clock run in the room
I saw a peanut stand up high
A sardine box in town
A bedspring at the garden gate
An inkstand on the ground
You don't believe all this, do you ?
For not a single thing is true
It's just a silly way to say
"Happy April Fool's Day !"

  Heya, Miss Chyna!
Yeah, my head looks okay, minus all those feathers. But the skin is good color and nothing got broken or anything. So now I get to enjoy head scritches even more from Mom.

No snow here. Whew. Sunshine. Mom woke up this morning and when she went to get her coffee, the two mourning doves were on the banister on the balcony--sleeping! She loves to see them hang out in front of the window like that. She doubts that they are the same ones who were babies back in 2003--but there are always two of them who come on the banister. Very cool.

Sunny day, around 50 today. Mom says it was great to walk outside, and to the park overlooking the lake front. Water was super blue, too! I hope she takes me down there one day when it gets warm out so I can see the water. She says she wants to do that. And you know I will love going anyplace with her.

Not much else going on here. So...Happy Toosday!

Mom cracked the nut for me today and lets me have one a day but makes me work for it though she does crack it a bit for me.
Dad went out for the paper this morning and to mail some things in the mailbox. He saw a bunny had gotten hit on the road a little down from our drive way. He scooped it off the road with a shovel and then buried it. For two years there has been this one here along with two others about a year now for them. Mom and dad think this is the one that was here the longest and stayed under our shed and dad always feeds them. Mom and dad both felt bad . “No matter what the weather may be, I can always count on chatting with my friends on BC” Leaving a vote for you my friend~~Hugs, Gus (RIP Chi chi)

Tell me that stupid snow that fell the other day is all melted and the grass now needs to be mowed. Come on, lie t'me if ya have to. I don't wanna hear that you're still buried in the nasty white stuff; it makes me sad t'think this little bikini bird is stuck in a snowdrift yet. It was stinkin' glorious here t'day. I didn't get t'go out because there was a bit of a breeze which spoiled it for the parrots, that and there's really only shade in the parrot pen but I'd need to be sitting in the sun to be really happy. Mom mentions the retractable roof idea every spring but I don't see anything being done with that suggestion. Apparently she's not battin' her lashes enough for this one. At least the windows are opened in my room and the fresh air's blowin' in and the sounds of the thawed-out wild birds floods in with it. Kelly's been chirpin' like a robin all afternoon. I bet there's some robins outside that think one of their kind got captured and taken prisoner in our house.

I'm suppose t'tell you that the pre-Derby pictures will be ready to send out on Monday instead of tomorrow. I figured everybirdie would want to have their Easter pictures up over the weekend and then maybe ready for jockey photos next week.

I just looked at my weather widget for you place. Maybe you shouldn't look at the forecast. Save yourself the depression. Go put on your sunglasses, turn on the nearest light, take off the lampshade and pretend you're basking on a beach somewhere. ... ...

  Hi Chyna
Well, Mom got me outside for my sunbath today at 9:45, and even though the weather geeks are claiming it is a high of only 75 today we were quite comfy out there. Mom thinks it is a lot closer to 80 for a high.

Then Mom ran off to the gym for zumba. She always wears pink on Tuesday, because her trainer, Becky, hates pink and Mom doesn't work out with her on Tuesdays. However she then made a point of finding Becky and making her look at her pink shirt and socks. Mom is verrry mean! She stopped at the store on the way home to drop off a script and pick up some more frozen lunches. She got a Butternut Squash ravioli for our lunch today which they have been out of for a while, which made me mad because it is one of my favorites. All sorts of goodies for a birdie to love in there.

And now we are blogging. I was sitting quietly on Mom's knee, but now I am on the desk chewing on the ball of string sitting there. Since it is for making birdie toys, Mom decided that is acceptable behavior. Yippee!

Don't forget today is the last day to vote for our dear little BooBoo for BOTM, although between you and me I am sure she has won. What a wonderful and educational campaign she has run. Next up is Mikey D, and his campaign looks pretty eggciting. April will be another greyt month here on the BC.

  Hi Chyna
Birds can be helpful to each other in many ways. The most familiar form of cooperation is when an owl or hawk appears in the neighborhood, causing every songbird within a quarter of a mile to sound alarm calls and even dive at the predator. Perhaps the most interesting form of help is when young birds of the first brood of the year help their parents raise the second brood of the year. There have been many reports of juvenile eastern bluebirds carrying food to the nesting houses containing their parents’ second brood.American crows and Florida scrub-jays demonstrate some of the same cooperative behavior, when sexually immature one-year-olds help their parents gather nesting material, protect the territory, and carry food for the next generation.Cooperation occurs among acorn woodpeckers of the Far West, when groups of up to 10 birds live together, year-round, jointly defending the communal territory, gathering food, and together incubating eggs and feeding the nestlings of each pair in the group.

Sometimes birds of different species lay eggs in the same nest. This has happened among American robins and northern cardinals. The two species take turns incubating eggs, sometimes sitting side-by-side, and jointly feed the young when they hatch. There are also adoptions. For example, a male Carolina wren started feeding an incubating female house wren. When the eggs hatched, the male Carolina continued by feeding the babies, causing both of the true parents to desert, leaving the rearing of their young to the foster father.

This is my last day of my campaign and I want to thank all of you for your help in making my campaign a success. it has been so much fun visiting with each of you every day. i apologize for not being able to answer all your comments individually but i did read every one and enjoyed them very much. i love you all so much.

  Hi Chyna
Hope your mom feels better soon.
Just a brief mention of the cart contents: the animal pelts that mom displayed were hunted probably 100 years ago, when guys went and trophy hunted. A lot of the collection is from a guy named Childs Frick, a friend of Carnegie's and son of Henry Frick, whom you might remember from Peppino's blogs. If the pelts are newer, they were donated by the zoo after the animal passed away.
Mom added stuff to the squirrel mix she brought home yesterday, some kibble and more nuts, so she has a lot of food now for the released squirrels.
Today a guy is coming over to measure the cabinets and show mom what's available. She is anxious to see what he has to offer. Then later, she will go to PetSmart for a few doggie things, like new tie outs and maybe a new leash. She wants to look for a treat pouch that hooks onto her jeans if they have them, too.
After that, she's ours for the rest of the day. I hope you are having a great day and getting lots of cuddles and scritches. Hugs, Falco

  Hi Chyna
It's Alex.
Yesterday was "work in the yard day" for dad. He edged the front lawns to get them ready for mowing and then he cleaned up the south side of the house Guess he wasn't sore enough so he cleaned up the flower bed along the back fence and then mowed the weeds in the backyard. Now he's real sore. Then he took a shower and grilled steaks for dinner. This morning we can hear him creaking and moaning and groaning. "Hey dad! Look at the date on your driver's license. You're not as young as you used to be. Lighten up!"
today will be partly cloudy with a high of 79 and a low of 55.

  Hi Chyna,
The Irish picture and the Easter picture are both from last year's original picture. I look pretty good in it, don't I. LOL I am so good when I get my picture taken but sometimes I do move and it's hard to get a shot. For some reason, last time I got my picture taken, they came out absolutely horrible. And I am a cute bird so it must have been the camera. LOL

But we will try again! We'll keep you posted. Have a good day!! Leaving you a vote.

Your friend,
Chipper

  Hi, Chyna
Hopefully the eagles can modify their nest to ensure the eggs don't get water logged again. Know once that happened wasn't much chance of it drying out with the continued snow/rain/cold you've had there.

Amazing how the tiny bit of syrup scent was enough to get the ants chewing thru the house to reach it. Survival instincts.

Glad that you got some sun. Can always sit by the window to feel the warmth as probably a tad cold to go outside. Hopefully your mom feels better quickly.

We are honored to be today's BOTD. Thank you everybirdie.

Keep warm, wing hugs, beak kisses and a vote King Pearl and King Silver.

  Hi Chyna
Ugh, Sorry to hear mom isn't feeling so well. Dory hands Chyna a thermos of her homemade Chicken & Noodle soup ... this always makes my mom feel better.

We are expecting more bad weather this week ... mom really hopes and prays the tornados stay away but knows that we are in prime season for these nasty things. Mom says sometimes the best thing you can do is stay out of mother natures way we she is mad ... hmmm that I agree with lol. Have a great day. V4U. Hugs.

Today is mom's long day, but I think it'll be easy since vacation is looming on the horizon :) Tuesdays her class has no specials which means she has no prep periods, and then she has her drama club. They're doing a western this year and the kids are having a great time ! To be truthful, so is mom ! She really enjoys working with the middle school age . . .

I hope you have a lovely day ! Hurry spring ! love Cookie

  Hi Chyna,
It was me with the blood test. It's to rule out my kidneys, liver and to check for diabetes too.

Cause my mom gives me water when she comes home and she's worried cause I used to drink a couple of sips to now the most I drank was 15 sips as she has been counting. :(

Moms hoping that its something simple and cureable.

I should get my test results on Wednesday, I'll let you know what the vet says.

Here's a vote for you sweetie.

Sending you warm hugs!

Love,

Laka

  Hi Chyna, my sweet,
it did seem like a lot of birdies went home earlier than usual. Maybe BC was giving them to much trouble?

It doesn't take much for ants to come in for a visit and then never leave...carpenter ants are not good to have where there wood. I hope your dad got them this time. Sorry to hear that the deck is toast and has to be rebuilt. You will make a great supervisor for the project. You will keep your dad on track for sure.

The amount of snow you are getting is just ridiculous...

We had a nice day here, the parronts went to the store and got the supplies needed to do the floor in the trailer. Mom looked at the flowers but the selection still wasn't that great so she will wait a while longer. Dad did remove a couple of plants from the front garden. They had gotten overgrown and needed to go. Mom will get a couple more new once she finds what she wants...

All my love, your Scoober ♥ XOXOXOXO

  Heya, Miss Chyna!
Well, gotta say that I am doing just fine. Eating and being spoiled by Mom. I love all the attention, and my head looks good, too. No more antibiotic, cuz it doesn't look sore anymore. No headaches, either. I have done this before, but this time more feathers fell out. Go figure.

Well, gotta say it was a sort of nice day today. Rain came this afternoon. Great day to nap, only Mom was at work. So I had to nap in my house. Perfectly okay though. Mom says she would have loved to be able to take a nap--with work winding down, there is not a lot for her to do, and she is bored. Guess it could be worse, huh? Getting paid for being bored!? Ha.

Have a great rest of the day, and will cya tomorrow!

Your buddy,
Kaji

  Hi Chyna
So far today I haven't had any BC problems like I was having all weekend. No surprise your mom hasn't hears anything back from the emails she sent.Hopefully the problems your having will get better.
Hope you got some sun today. We started off with seeing the sun today but it soon went away and stayed gloomy. It was warmer though and hopefully now the warmer weather will last . Hope your week is off to a good start. Have a good night.
