 a lady was having to give up her finches and Lisa asked mom if she could take 2 society finches. Well, you know mom. My sweetie got egg bound and didn't make it...at the same time Punkin was passing a broken egg, she made it, but Handsome and Aya got out. That left the two of us alone so when Punkin was strong enough we moved in together and were real happy. Then other finches were rescued and well, I still like to be around Punkin. The best fister a bird can have.. |

Thanks for all your support to get me to 10K votes! I'm so happy to be in the Hall of Fame. Thanks to Maxie for a great party, too.
Happy St. Patrick's Day! Mom loved the opera last night. It was Madama Butterfly, which she's seen numerous times, but it's some of the most sublime music she's ever heard, so she doesn't mind going again. She's working at the museum today, so our blog will be brief.
The first day at the beach was spent on a resort island called Vinpearl. They took cable cars(?) for an aerial ride to the island. Mom isn't sure that's what you call the cars, but they were overhead on wires, with ocean below. Mom had a very relaxing time on the beach, while her friends walked the park, riding the amusement park rides, eating and drinking, and watching some shows. Mom joined them for a trip to the aquarium on the island, then they walked through the mall to the cable place, and back to the mainland. They ate at a barbecue place where they put the grill on the table and you cook your own food. Later on, mom rode one of those tricycles with a seat on the front, and she and Nghi had their hair done and got massages, all for under $30.
That evening they got dressed up and went to a beach party at a really fancy restaurant on the beach. Hope you have a wonderful day today, more to come tomorrow! 29 more votes to go! I'm so excited! Mom and her 2 friends went to My Tho province the next day by taxi! They hired a car to take them to Nghi's husband's home town, where they did a tour of the Mekong River in that area. Mom got to see where Duc, Nghi's husband, lives. They met all the dogs, pigs, guinea fowl, doves, hamsters, and aquarium fish there, too. The tour on the Mekong included 3 islands with mom's own tour guide who spoke English. On the first island, they saw traditional crafts, heard music from the Mekong, sampled fruit, did a tour of an orchard, and finally a ride in a sampan back to the tour boat. On the second island, they saw how coconut candy and wine were made, and sampled each of them, then to a bee farm, where mom held a drawer of honeybees out of the hive and a live python, They tasted the honey, then crossed a monkey bridge to the horse drawn carts. They rode them back to the tour boat. The next stop was the coconut monk temple. There was a crazy monk who thought it would be wise to eat only coconuts, and that he should be king of the world. When he died (probably sooner than he expected), he weighed around 75 lbs. He actually had followers, the guide told mom there's one left, an older woman, who lives on the island. Dinner that night was a lot of new things in the hot pot, which mom did her best to try. Hope you are having a great day. Thanks for the goodies! I love cinnamon rolls. What a busy day came next! The focus on this day was Eastern medicine and food. The first stop was called a butterfly garden, but it was really a spot where there were artificial caverns and dioramas explaining how bird's nest soup nests were harvested. Then swallows whose nests are used prefer to be in caverns, often in inaccessible places, so gathering the nests after the young have fledged is a difficult and dangerous process. Of course, the humans all sampled the soup, which was sweet and kind of viscous. This place also featured lots of bee products, honey, pollen, etc. But the group was led into a room where there was a lecture about the medicinal benefits of the bee products as well as some other things like tiger bone, which kind of turned mom's stomach. The Vietnamese guide whispered to her that she couldn't take this stuff into America, and she whispered back that she wouldn't want to! She was trying hard not to be judgmental, but really!
The next stop was a large market that sold lots of snack foods, but not like you're thinking--the snacks were things like candy and cashews, but also included dried, salted shrimp, cuttlefish, sea stars, small whole fish, fish crackers, fish strips that looked like long shoestring potatoes, etc. Mom mostly walked around and looked, while her friends bought a ton of stuff. After the market, the group went to a cobra show, then heard about the benefits of snake medicines. Talk about snake oil salesmen! Then it was off to a leather factory which made crocodile, elephant, and sting ray leathers. By this time it was nearing 1PM, so lunch was in Bangkok's largest hotel, on the 76th floor. Once everyone finished lunch, it was off to a large Buddhist temple, where they climbed to the top floor to see the Buddha, ring a bell (for luck), and then it was off to the hotel to check in. This hotel had a pool, so mom and her friends made use of it before dinner. After dinner the group went to what was called a 'gay' show, but was really a large group of transsexuals who performed. Most of these guys were undergoing transformation to women, and had implants and some surgical procedures, not like American drag queens. The show was actually beautiful, classy, and the girls came outside afterwards to get pictures taken. After such a long day, it felt good to go to sleep! That was a slick move! HAHAHA!
The next day in Thailand was a beach adventure. The group went to an island in the Gulf of Siam and hung out for the morning. When they got there, it cracked mom up, because the beach was covered wall to wall with umbrellas which overlapped each other so that no sun would come through! Mom has a different attitude, wanted to get a bit of color, but Asians value light skin tones, so even on the beach they cover up and stay protected. Mom tried durian on the beach. It's a very different fruit. It looks ugly on the outside, and has an awful smell, but on the inside, it tastes like custard!
After the beach, the group went for a tour of the World Gems market. After the gems, the people went to the floating market, which was huge! Mom wanted much more time there than they got. She barely saw 1/4 of the shops and boats. After dinner, everyone went to a show which mom will not talk about on a family channel! Hope you are having a great day. Mom's second day in SE Asia was spent traveling to Thailand by air, then getting on a bus with a large group of Vietnamese tourists. They went into Bangkok, got on a boat and went upriver a little way to feed some special fish. Then they went to a Buddhist shrine with the 4 faced Buddha, some temple dancers, lots of elephant statues, and people putting flowers and incense in front of the statue. It was a beautiful shrine, right on a street corner! After that visit, the group had dinner in a local restaurant. This was a harbinger of dinners on the whole tour. They served everything family style, on a large lazy susan in the middle of the table. You could get a dish of rice or noodles, then put a taste of everything on it! Soup was served every meal, too, including breakfast. After dinner, we went to the hotel and checked in. Some of the group was going out, but mom thought it was time for Nghi to spend time with her husband and a few friends who came on the tour, so she stayed in the room and let the young people go out on the town.
Some folks are asking about pics. If mom's camera turns up, she will post pics to go with the stories. If it doesn't, maybe she can get Nghi to share her pics when she comes back from Vietnam. She stayed there an extra couple of weeks, so will be back late in March.

Hi Ike
Mom had a brand new trainee at the center this morning. She was a good worker, so we hope she works out for the center, which always needs good volunteers.
Well, this is it for a couple of weeks! Mom is not yet packed (why am I not surprised?), but plans to be ready at 4AM to go to the airport tomorrow. Her sister is taking her to dinner tonight, so she won't have to cook, at least. Anna will be here this evening when she's done with class, so someone will be with us in the morning when we wake up. I think we will all miss mom, but we love Anna, and she loves us too. I'll be back online on March 6th, I think, so until then I hope you get lots of scritches and love and have beautiful days and evenings. Yesterday the squawkatiels were all over BC, but today it seems safe to send our messages. Thanks for your support, only 62 more votes and I'll be a Hall of Famer, I can't wait! It's gonna be great to join everyone who has already made that milestone number of votes. Today it's raining, but going to turn to snow soon. Mom got her car filled up this morning, then hit the bank and pool while it was still raining. She came home to do our blogs and to stay with us the rest of the day. She has meetings all day tomorrow, starting at 10, so we may be really late getting online, depending on the weather, of course. Flyin' by to say hi. Not too much excitement around here except that one of the female zebra finches had a marble sized piece of poop stuck on its behind so I caught her and took her to the bathroom sink and ran some lukewarm water over her backside. That loosened it up enough for me to gently peel it off with a Q-tip. She's just fine this morning. We still have 4" of snow on the ground in spite of the warmer than normal temps this past week. The snow is really packed down in the yard and it freezes over at night which makes walking the dogs in the morning tough. Bantam Lake is frozen over and the ice boats were out last week-end but now with the warm temps, they are off the ice, though the people ice fishing are still out there,

I's comin' as the official greeter for the Pirate Pearl Adventure! The Good Capt'n Ceasaur is quite busy his-self so's he sent me. I'm your First Officer or First Mate.
