  Flitzer Monday Musings
Hello from King Flitzer. I was so surprised with the giant Carrot Cake greeting me yesterday.
I hope you all got to have a beakful.
--
Sadly, another cold, snowy slippery Monday morning commute. Daddy says the whole town is miserable as Monday commutes are the most difficult on the spirit as well.

March can be as brutal as February here in Buffalo-land. We are pleading for mercy.

Everyone have a great day. ~Wings Up~

  Flitzer Final February Post
THE LOST ART OF THE INTERMISSION:
.
For many years, longer films were planned with Intermisisons. the story would take a dramatic pause, the music would swell, and the audience got to take a break to use the bathrooms, visit the Refreshment Stand etc.
--
I always loved the Intermission music. Often in the older theaters, curtains would dramatically close on the Intermission, and slowly open when Part 2 began.
--
Nowadays we're forced to sit for 2 1/2, 3 hrs or more without a break.
[The Lord of the Rings films are good examples - they are long, involved, and you're lost if you had to take a break away from the screen].

Even revivals of older films will skip right over the Intermission - forcing you to shift in your seat - and hold it in for another extended period of time - ~ugh~
--
Unfortunately, after paying the high ticket-prices we need to *er* …"step away" from the film for a few minutes, missing possibly something interesting.
--
Theater owners are always conscious of how many showings they can fit in per day, but I say BRING BACK THE INTERMISSION. People *will* spend more for refreshments, and not have to miss any of the movie.

I hope you are having a lovely day! I had a lovely cranberry scone for breakfast so it's been a great day so far! The gardeners are here but since it's raining they are not going to get much done! I suppose that it will be all bush trimming and sweeping today so it won't be too interesting, Suppose I'll have to find someone else to yell at today!
Mom is cleaning today so I will just supervise and wait for the cooking to start and see what is on the menu for the day!
I do hope you enjoy your day! Leaving a vote and a big hug!

  Flitzer Friday on Film
Before the month winds down, we want to Thank our loyal friends for all their support, kind words and encouragement throughout this past month.
Love from Mark and Flitzer

= = = =
Dad's Special Movie Memory:
As kids we would get to a movie theater once in a while. Mostly for a Kids Matinee.
We almost never visited the Refreshment Stand. There was one special time which was an exception.
Dad was treated to a special movie with his Mom. They went without the rest of the family -and It was an evening showing, She even bought him popcorn. Can't recall if it was a Birthday or whatever - just that it was a special night.

The film was "MARY POPPINS", which, ever since has been a special movie for Dad.

We spoke earlier this month about how a few notes of music can make a movie-memory come sweeping back. Any music from ‘Mary Poppins’ makes Dad think of that special Movie Night with his Mom.

  Flitzer on Winners and Classics
Kiddo raised an interesting topic: Films that did Not win The Academy Award for 'Best Picture', but they are now classics, many times surpassing the Oscar-winning film.
--
in the Awards Game there has to be a winner, and losers. There will be endless discussion as to outcomes, but only time makes a film a true Classic.
A couple of examples:
--
The Year: 1941. The Oscar-Winning film, "How Green was My Valley" [a personal favorite and a wonderful film], but the nominee that did not get the award was "Citizen Kane" which many feel is one of the Greatest Films Ever Made.
--
The Year: 1952. The Oscar-Winning Film, "The GreatestShow on Earth"
...same year as "High noon" and "The Quiet Man"
--
The Year: 2005. The Oscar-Winning Film, "Crash"
...same year as "Brokeback Mountain", a film which many consider a Classic.
= = =
Will this year's winner, "Birdman", remain considered the Best of the year?
or will “American Sniper”, "Boyhood" or even "The Grand Budapest Hotel" be remembered...only time will tell.

  Flitzer Wednesday Thoughts . . .
Still in "Recovery-Mode" from Hollywood's Big Night.

--
Some of you BirdChannel friends have expressed that they don't watch The Oscars.
Dad doesn't really like the Hollywood Glamor-thing and some of the industry politics,
but we do love movies.
--
Often we are disappointed with what films and actors win the awards. That is all a part of the game. We often look back on past years with a knowing smirk, realizing that the movies we liked best that year are the ones that are still being watched and appreciated.
--
All that being said, we do like tuning in that one night a year, when Hollywood goes all-out and celebrates the talent, work and yes, the tackiness of The Hollywood Movie Machine.

  Flitzer Parties with the Stars
Inside Oscar’s Glamorous After-Parties
--
The night doesn’t end when the final Oscar is handed out. In fact, the party is just getting started as stars and execs exit the Dolby Theater, heading to a flurry of post-awards celebrations, including the Governors Ball, the Vanity Fair Party, Elton John’s AIDS Foundation party and more.

--
The Governors Ball
By the time celebs arrived at the Governors Ball, they were ravenous. As usual, the event was catered by Wolfgang Puck -- a fact he made sure everyone was aware of.
Before the Oscars began, he walked the entire red carpet in his chef's whites with a tray displaying some of the treats partygoers would be offered at the after-party. Among them: caviar-topped baked potatoes, chicken pot pie and mac and cheese with aged cheddar. There was also a dessert bar, though most guests skipped the cookies and cupcakes in favor of Puck's trademark mini gold-covered chocolate Oscars. The candy men were kept just feet from a station where winners headed with their real gold statues and queued up to wait for engraving.

Vanity Fair Oscar Party
Location: Wallis Annenberg Center, Santa Monica Blvd, Beverly Hills, CA
Details: Graydon Carter hosts the Vanity Fair Oscar party at a custom-designed space which connects the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts with City Hall. Above photo, Lady Gaga attends while right, Oscar-winning best supporting actor Jared Leto photobombs Anne Hathaway.
--
InStyle Oscar Party
Location: Fig & Olive, 8940 Melrose Place, West Hollywood, CA

Guy Oseary and Madonna’s Late Night Party
Details: Undisclosed. It’s happening, but a source close to the event says Madonna will be unable to attend since she’ll be in rehearsals for The Brit Awards on Feb. 25.
--
Elton John Oscars Party
The Elton John AIDS Foundation hosted its 2015 Academy Awards viewing party in West Hollywood on Sunday. The annual event, now in its 23rd year, serves as a star-studded fundraiser for the organization, which John founded in 1992 to support HIV/AIDS care, prevention, and awareness.

John and his husband David Furnish serve as co-hosts. Gordon Ramsay is once again providing a five-course gourmet dinner, and there will be a special musical performance. John, who joined Instagram in December to document his wedding to Furnish, is now using his account to share intimate pictures from the exclusive celebration. Before the Oscars ceremony began, the music legend revealed $4.85 million had already been raised, and later shared an adorable picture of his sons watching “Uncle Neil” Patrick Harris host the show.

Miley Cyrus, Heidi Klum, Nina Dobrev, the Osbournes, Aaron Paul, Alec Baldwin, Rob Lowe are among the celebrities in attendance. Plenty more are expected to join the festivities once the Academy Awards show ends.

"The costumes, the scenery, the makeup, the props

The closing when the customers won't come

There's no business like show business

The other highlight of the show was Lady Gaga's tribute to the 50th anniversary of "The Sound of Music" -like her or not, her performance was phenomenal.

Although Dad thinks there were better films last year, anything called "Birdman" gets my vote too. It took hom 4 Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director.
-
Dad's favorite film this year was "Whiplash" which won three awards, including JK Simmons winning for Best Supporting Actor - Dad says he had the best performance of the year and his gold statue was the most deserved.

  Flitzer ready to co-Host The Oscars
Oscar Sunday

Singing: "It’s a wonderful night for Oscar…Oscar, Oscar!" --Billy Crystal

Billy Crystal is my favorite Oscar Host. He has hosted NINE Times between 1990 and 2012.
As far as I'm concerned he could keep on hosting.
--
The origin of the name Oscar is disputed. One biography of Bette Davis claims that she named the Oscar after her first husband, band leader Harmon Oscar Nelson; Walt Disney is also quoted as thanking the Academy for his Oscar as early as 1932.
Another claimed origin is that the Academy's Executive Secretary, Margaret Herrick, first saw the award in 1931 and made reference to the statuette's reminding her of her "Uncle Oscar" (a nickname for her cousin Oscar Pierce). Columnist Sidney Skolsky was present during Herrick's naming and seized the name in his byline, "Employees have affectionately dubbed their famous statuette 'Oscar'". The trophy was officially dubbed the "Oscar" in 1939 by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

  Hello King Amando~
I hope you are having a great day! Dad is back on the road and it's not New Mexico he was going to, it Colorado! Different story all together. Mom could have sworn he said New Mexico but he tells her he told her it was Pueblo which is in Colorado! Well he got to the yard and they don't think he can make it all the way to Colorado on time so now he is going to Salt Lake City! Good news is that most of the mountain passes between here and there are bare and dry. There is a storm blowing in today but it's mostly wind and it's just not cold enough to snow. We did put the fireplace on for a bit this morning just to warm the room up for me.
Mom is finishing up the laundry and then she'll head off to bed. We had a great weekend but now it's time for the workweek to start! I wish I could be at the Milonga tonight but mom will be sleeping so I won't have a typist! I think I have only made it to one but I always go back on Sunday morning and read all about it!
I hope your day is just perfect! Leaving a vote and a big hug!

  Flitzer's Saturday Squawks
Instead of saying who I think will win Oscars, or who should win, I will simply concentrate on what I consider the Best Films for the year.
********************************************
Top Films of 2014: My Top Films this year:
********************************************
#1: “Whiplash”: (Dir: Damien Chazelle).
"Whiplash" is such an amazing film in every way. The Directing, the Writing, the Editing, the Cinematography. The performances are outstanding.

A film about Talent, Ambition, Obsession. Pushing oneself beyond known abilities. - -Soaring above the rest.
"Whiplash" won both The Audience Award and The Grand Jury Prize at Sundance - an amazing feat.

Filmed more like a thriller than a film about music, it becomes a battle of wills between our protagonist [Miles Teller] and his mentor-[a truly amazing J.J. Simmons]. It is an exhilarating work from the start to it's adrenaline-rushing finish.
.......
#2: “Boyhood”: (Dir: Richard Linklater).
A celebration of Life and being human. A simple story of growing up becomes profound and moving. Filmed over 12 years, the story and characters grow as the real-life filmmakers do, and the end-result is wonderful.

Richard Linklater is a talented, insightful director. I think the time has come to acknowledge his achievements.
.......
3. “Calvary”: (Dir: John Michael McDonagh)
Beautiful, sad and scathing portrait of a simple priest struggling with his own humanity and trying to do good in a small sinful town.
A truly great performance by Brendan Gleeson and a portrait of the True Power of Forgiveness. It is a film of Faith, of Doubt and Transcendence.
.......
4. “Birdman” (Dir: Alejandro González Iñárritu)
Michael Keaton shines in this fascinating exploration of Creativity, Talent and the cost of Fame. The tale winds seamlessly and breathlessly to the last shot.
.......
5. “The Babadook” (Dir: Jennifer Kent).
A superior horror tales that is brilliant in every way. What an amazing first film: Writing, Direction, Cinematography --- pitch-perfect performances.
An amazing film that works on a few different levels.
.......
6. "Edge of Tomorrow"
7. "Enemy"
8. "Ida"
9. "Into the Woods"
10. "Jodorowsky's Dune"
11. "Locke"
12. "The Immigrant"

  Hi Amando
Pimer sits by his big friend and offers a peanut butter cookie. It's ok, the rest of the flock is getting their cookies too. Oatie tried some of that peanut butter that has lots of goodies in it this time. Turned out pretty good too.
We're hoping all are doing well and you're staying warm. These storms are so frightening to hear about! We haven't had a storm since Dec but then the power kicked off a while....NOT days!...Mom didn't have problems keeping us warm because the weather wasn't super cold. But in the north you have been losing power for days! Sure hope all our friends are safe. *Pimer gives a shake*
On to other things...Looks like Jules is here to stay a while. haha Skin sis is backing out on taking him. She gets migraines & hers is pretty quiet I guess, but every time she calls mom Jules is really enjoying himself. She's not sure she could take such a happy bird. Now if Ipo wanted to move.....nope she's not about to leave mom.
All our flock is doing good even though Sophie is snottier than usual, but mom says we need to help her get through this hormonal season best we can. UGH!! She's baaaad this year. Well, better fly before she catches up with me. haha Good seeing you and your flock doing so well. See ya later.

A Sneak Peek Inside the Glamorous Oscars Governors Ball

When all 1,500 guests make their way into the 2015 Oscars Governors Ball — the Academy Awards’ annual after-party — they’ll be entering an old-school Hollywood speakeasy.

The room will be adorned in plush velvets and tapestries, and will feature hundreds of black-and-white photographs from the Academy’s collections.

When all 1,500 guests make their way into the 2015 Oscars Governors Ball — the Academy Awards’ annual after-party — they’ll be entering an old-school Hollywood speakeasy.
--
The room will be adorned in plush velvets and tapestries, and will feature hundreds of black-and-white photographs from the Academy’s collections.
--
“The colors are very rich jewel tones – burgundies, purples, deep greens and golds,” says celebrity florist Mark Held. “We’re trying to create a different look for each table. Some tables have vintage-looking lamps, some tables are tone-on-tone purple, and for some tables, we’ve created man-made flowers out of succulents. It’s very eclectic.”
--
Aside from the stunning décor, Hollywood’s A-listers will have plenty to munch on, as chef Wolfgang Puck has created 32(!) unique dishes to serve over the course of the meal.
--
“When we do a menu for 1,500 people, we have to have enough dishes so that there’s something for everybody,” explains Puck. “Some people are vegan and vegetarian, some people don’t eat fish or don’t eat meat. Because of that, we made 32 different dishes, from a little parsnip chip with eggplant puree, which are a little Middle Eastern, to lobster rolls with bacon, which is traditional American.”
--
Other dishes include baked potatoes topped with caviar, black truffle chicken pot pies, Wagyu shortrib with squash puree, chilled sweet pea soup, and Puck’s signature Oscar-shaped smoked salmon matzo. (350 lbs. of smoked salmon will be served in total!)
--
Of course, no party is complete without some festive drinks. Piper-Heidsieck will be serving up 1,500 bottles of champagne — including about 750 of their exclusive Rare bottles — while Sterling Vineyards will be providing 2,400 bottles of wine.

  Flitzer Wednesday Squawks
'BEST DIRECTOR'
The Director of a film helms the project - it is his vision which ends up on the screen -the scope, the mood, the pacing. He normally chooses the actors and crew that can best fulfill the work he/she envisions. Although a collaborative effort, the Director makes the big decisions and it responsible for the final product.

--
Due to strange rules of The Academy, there are 8 'Best Picture' nominees this year, yet only 5 Directors can be nominated for recognition.

In my eyes, Director RICHARD LINKLATER has been the most creative, experimental, thoughtful and accomplished director of the bunch. Although 'Boyhood' may not be his best film, I am rooting for him to win 'Best Director' this year.

Favorite Film Scores:
..................................
I love "Movie Music".
.
Music is so important in setting the mood of the film. It heightens the tension, the suspense, the romance....
Often we don't even notice the music as it is such an intricate part of the fabric of the film.

Sometimes it takes seeing a movie a few times to appreciate the score.

The greatest film composers know how to play on our emotions while we do not even realize it.
It only takes a few notes of the score to have movie memories come flooding back. We recognize the music for the shark in "Jaws" instantly, and can picture Scarlett O'Hara with just a couple notes of 'Tara's Theme'.
--
My Top Favorite Musical Scores for Movies:
1. "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir - Bernard Herrmann
2. "Dead Ringers" - Howard Shore
4. "Ben-Hur" - Miklós Rózsa
4. "Out of Africa" - John Barry
5. "Cinema Paradiso" - Ennio Morricone
6 "All About My Mother" - Alberto Iglesias
7. "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly" - Ennio Morricone

The Theatrical Experience.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
My Dad prefers to watch films in the movie theater. He goes sometimes once a week.
Often older Classic Films, or Foreign Films or Independent Films. He does see more current releases, but is very selective with those.
--
Dad believes in the Theatrical Experience. He does not pay for cable TV or dish, and takes that entertainment money and spends it at the movies.
--
There is something special in the communal experience of an audience in the dark - laughing at something funny, or holding its collective breath in suspense. It is a very special shared experience you can't get at home watching a DVD.
Being enveloped in the huge picture, the expanse of sound.
--
The smell of freshly popped popcorn is a special treat. Dad says a movie isn't the same without a nice bag of popcorn in his lap.
--
I like to share special movies at home with Dad and sometimes his friends as well. Often what we see at home are films Dad fell in love with At The Movies.

  Hello King Amando~
I hope you guys are having a great day! Lots of cleaning going on this morning. Mom wishes she did not have to work tonight so she could get more done. She'll be off tomorrow night so the chores will continue tomorrow. Mom will come home and take a nap in the morning and then get me my toast!! She thinks she will go to Ross tomorrow to buy some new clothes. Dad gave her a gift card for Christmas and told her that her clothes were mostly junk and she needed some new stuff! I guess you can tell mom doesn't like clothes shopping much!
Dad has been in a motel in Phoenix for 3 days. He is really bored and wants to get back out on the road. He has his laptop with him and can watch TV. There is a Jack in the Box and a Waffle House within walking distance but I think he is tired of them. The satellite system broke and it is taking them forever to get it fixed. His terminal up here is complaining to the shop in Phoenix because they are taking so long. They told dad it should be done today but if it's not done by 6pm he will be in the motel for another night.
Mom and Jennifer went over to the dollar store and bought some cards and candies for the kids at the daycare. They are having a Valentine's party tomorrow. The kids decorated paper lunch sacks and all the candy will go into their bags!
I think they are going to have lots of fun!
I hope you have lots of fun today!! Leaving a vote and a big hug too!

"We'll always have Paris.": "Casablanca", Dad's Favorite Film:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"CASABLANCA" (1942, Dir: Michael Curtiz)
--
Although Casablanca was an A-list film with established stars and first-rate writers, no one involved with its production expected it to be anything out of the ordinary.
It was just one of hundreds of pictures produced by Hollywood every year.
--
"Casablanca" had its world premiere on November 26, 1942, in New York City and was released on January 23, 1943, in the United States. The film was a solid if unspectacular success in its initial run, rushed into release to take advantage of the publicity from the Allied invasion of North Africa a few weeks earlier.
The film's reputation grew as audiences embraced it. Casablanca won three Academy Awards: for Best Picture, director, and writing (screenplay). Its lead characters, memorable lines, and pervasive theme song have all become iconic. The film has consistently ranked near the top of lists of the greatest films of all time.
  Hi King Amando from your pal, Jenny Lynn
Hi Amando and gang, at 10:00 AM, my dad finally got the BC up and running, don't laugh, at his age he said that was kind of a good thing, LOL! However with the BC being down for so long, it ate up a lot of our designated BC time! Tomorrow he has two appointments at our local VA Outpatient Clinic for a complete physical and an eye doctor visit to test for Diabetic Retinopathy, he needs that one! We love you guys, have a great day, and give our love to all in your magic home full of love, see ya tomorrow...
Forever love from Jenny & our Dallas flock
  Hello King Amando~
I hope you are having a great day! I heard that BC was all messed up this morning! They usually do that on Sunday mornings but maybe they were busy yesterday!
The school bus was late this morning!!! I know what you are thinking~~Sugar has no little kids in her house so why is she worried about the school bus being late??
Well, the little kids love to stand in the driveway while waiting for the school bus and pump their arms up and down! This causes the many big rigs going down our street to honk their loud honking horns!!!! A few times is cute but when the school bus is 8 minutes late, you get it 22 times! It quit being cute after the 3rd time! Lets hope Mr. Bus Driver will be much more punctual tomorrow! Sugar will be checking up on him!!!!!!
Ian worked his first ever overnight last night. He came right home and went to sleep!HAHAHAHAHAHA Mom has already cleaned the carpet in the living room, mopped the dining room and done 2 loads of laundry! She would love to come home and go to sleep but I am use to my schedule and need to have my toast and my apples and tell mom all about what went on while she was at work! Since we are all sleeping while she is at work, there usually isn't much to tell!
I hope your day is just wonderful!! Leaving a vote and a big hug!
Love you ~ Sugar ♥
  Hi King Amando
Well, our rain did not arrive until a few minutes ago, but definitely there was no chance of a sunbath today due to there being no sign of the sun....and it was sure too chilly at 60 degrees. I know, I know, that is balmy temps to my poor buddies back east, but we call that full winter weather. It is supposed to go back up to low 70s tomorrow, but I doubt I will get outside, since Mom has a busy day planned. I will be fighting for any Mom time at all.
Not only is my mean old mom planning on spending a couple of hours at the gym in the morning, but after she gets back home and showers I will only have her for a short visit before she leaves to go see Annie at the local Playhouse that Mom and her friend, Rhonda, have season's tickets to. And then to add insult to injury they are going to dinner! I am so abused!
Be sure to go by the Calendar Page or the Milonga Page #165848 and check out the details on this month's milonga. I think it will be a lot of fun, and there is a contest which is always a great time leading up to the party. King Amando is joining Taz and I this time to make things eggstra special!
