I've had a love of birds since infant-hood and my dad's extensive knowledge and love for all birds helped to tailor my own feelings. I had many pet birds as a child, from parakeets to canada geese, but as an adult I haven't had birds in over ten years. I told my friend I was thinking of getting one and re-sparking my interest and the next day she told me of a person who had cockatiels that they couldn't care for anymore. The next day, I went and got them. The pair lived in deplorable conditions, with a filthy cage and not even one perch. Remi and her brother were so used to crawling on the cage wire that even when I added perches and all of the amenities they wouldn't touch them for days. There are still perches and toys they haven't touched. They grew up with nothing and do not know what to do with all of the toys, swings, latters, and what not. My little rescued bub-bubs are doing a lot better now though. It will take months before I can start to fully interact with them, handle them, and etc. But I love them nonetheless. They stole my heart <3 <3. Awards

Hi! My name is Remi

I am a Pied Mutation Cockatiel from Bradford, ME.

‘Rem-Rem’ and ‘pretty girl’ are Remi’s usual nicknames. As a whole I call all of my birds ‘bub bubs’ and ‘sweetsies’. As was her brother, Papi, Remi was named after past Red Sox player Jerry Remy. Who now does the game commentary with Orsillo on the NESN channel. Papi’s name comes from my favorite player David Ortiz who’s own nickname is Big Papi. When I rescued these birds the only thing I really knew about them was that they had an affinity for baseball games. Every night the baseball game came on Papi and Remi would rush to the front of their cage and hang on the bars completely mesmerized by the game on TV. They did this every time. I’m an avid Red Sox and baseball fan so of course I thought this was great. I watch the game every night its on and now I have my birds to watch with me. So in the end, I thought baseball-relate- d names for my birds was very fitting.

Remi LOVES her millet just as much as her brother does, and if allowed, would probably never eat anything else but millet. So I have to be careful how much I give them. She is not very interested in the other treats I offer, so diet is a main focal point in my training of her.

The most favorite spots Remi has is the log-like perch in front of the food/water dishes and her sleeping quarters on the manzanita branch. She basically never strays from those two spots, and when she does, it is mainly just to hang from the wires and chill out.

Remi is a very shy and nervous bird who was never handled. Little by little though, she is making progress as each week goes by. So Remi’s pet peeves mostly involve humans. She doesn’t like it when you get too close to her or when the cage needs cleaning and food/water, etc. Loud noises scare her and so does seeing some of the wild birds outside through the window in their room. Her brother Papi also likes to get a little rough with her. He does this thing where he squawks and attacks her beak with his. He usually dominates the food when he’s hungry and won’t let Remi near it. Although they really do love each other, Papi is just a little too rambunctious with her in my opinion.

“Now that I finally have someone who pays attention to me life is so much better. I get treats and yummy food and fresh water daily. My cage is always clean. And now I even have places to sleep and I don’t have to sleep in my food dish anymore. I love my owner for all of this greatly. She doesn’t push me to do things I cant do yet and that makes me really happy as well.” Said Remi.

Since I’ve only had my Cockatiels for less than a month, there is still so much to learn about them. This rings true especially for Remi. She is so quiet and nervous/flighty that I haven’t gotten to know her as much as her brother. She usually never makes a peep, unless something scares her, and then when she does make noise it is the loudest screeching I’ve ever heard. She really lets me know when something is not right or something is scaring her. Remi’s crest is ALWAYS straight up in the air, she never puts it down or moves it back and forth like her brother does when he’s interacting. So it looks like a permanent mohawk which I think is adorable. She loves this toy that slips over one of their perches making it able to spin around and around. Little balls and bells are attached to it and she will sit there and spin it every day. The funniest quirky habit Remi has is her stretching routine where she spreads her wings and leans forward on the perch. I say its funny because a lot of the time she misjudges how far forward she can go and ends up losing her balance and taking a dive..

“Patience, patience, patience!”.

Hi! Thanks for the welcome it is much appreciated. That is a sad story about your first cockatiels but I'm glad their suffering ended the day you rescued them. They sound a lot like mine, who were pretty neglected as well. I just couldn't imagine ever treating birds, or any animals, that way. Leaving them alone to suffer in their own filth and never giving them the attention they deserve. Its awful! But I really hope they will learn sooner than later that I'm not going to ever treat them that way. Right now I'm just really taking it one day at a time with them. I know they will heal eventually, in their own time. Thank you for sharing that story with me :)

Come visit me, Benji, Papi & Remi.

Welcome! My first cockatiels were bought at a junk auction. I didn't go there expecting to take home birds. But when the male was scream in fear as the man hit the make shift dirty cage yelling at him, my arm flew up an I yelled $10. Sold! My husband wasn't surprised. The female was next. I didn't bid on her so the owner took her back. I turned to my husband with a tear running down my cheek. He said go try to get her. $20 later she was in my hands. They were dirty thin scared. They were the sweetest birds ever. It took them some time but it was like they couldn't thank me enough. :-) Enjoy.

Come visit me, Hank.
